Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau
Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau Book Summary
In it, Thoreau argues that individuals should not permit governments to overrule or atrophy their consciences, and that they have a duty to avoid allowing such acquiescence to enable the government to make them the agents of injustice. Thought provoking. Interesting thoughts on the purpose of government, the conduct thereof, and the behavior of peoples.
Great quick read. All Americans should read through this
Exposition on the relationship of Government and The Citizen. A quick read that elegantly shows American Government is supposed to SERVE The People, and a reminder that all political power flows FROM The People. A bit anarchistic at times, but the principals hold up in contemporary society.
A must-read during these times.. While dated in its language at times, this is an excellent view that could be easily misconstrued if one were to ignore its core message.
Awful. He made his point then talked about nothing the entire book, what a waste of time to read to read this.
Civil Disobedience. Always a promisingly good read. Definitely interesting to see where our country came from politically and how we progressed. Introduced interesting values and ideals. I agree mankind should be self governed and have hopes one day we can achieve this goal.
Civil obedience. Greatt
A must read!. In hard times, a reading like this one can influence an individual greatly and "civil disobedience"is one of many of Henry's profound essays. Also iBooks is amazing, thank you.
A compelling admonishment of moral weakness full of brilliant and bold observations. Thoreau speaks boldly and unabashedly as he presents his libertarian views on government as well as on the great extent to which an individual must go to ensure that he has no part in any evil carried out by a government. He has harsh words for the vast majority of citizens, whom he admonishes for following the law rather than following what is morally right, and for being weak and hypocritical even in their critique of the government. Along the way, Thoreau makes brilliant and hard-hitting observations about society that cannot be denied and forces the reader to rethink the relationship between themselves and the state. The read is thought-provoking in the extreme.
Civil disobedience. I like how this book gives a deeper perspective on the way the world is, posing questions as to why it’s that way.
Timeless. Still relevant... thought provoking. HDT asks several questions that demand attention.
Timeless. HDT speaks to us today as much as he did over 150 years ago. We probably should all reassess our allegiances, and reevaluate our priorities in this life.
Terrible. Worst book ever 10/10
😍. Gorgeous thoughts put into Action.

Henry David Thoreau (July 12, 1817 – May 6, 1862) was an American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher. A leading transcendentalist, he is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience" (originally published as "Resistance to Civil Government"), an argument in favor of citizen disobedience against an unjust state. Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry amount to more than 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions are his writings on natural history and philosophy, in which he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern-day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close observation of nature, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and attention to practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in....
