William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him—so when he meets the spirited and ambitious Julia Padavano in his freshman year of college, it’s as if the world has lit up around him. With Julia comes her family, as she and her three sisters are inseparable: Sylvie, the family’s dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book; Cecelia is a free-spirited artist; and Emeline patiently takes care of them all. With the Padavanos, William experiences a newfound contentment; every moment in their house is filled with loving chaos.

But then darkness from William’s past surfaces, jeopardizing not only Julia’s carefully orchestrated plans for their future, but the sisters’ unshakeable devotion to one another. The result is a catastrophic family rift that changes their lives for generations. Will the loyalty that once rooted them be strong enough to draw them back together when it matters most?

An exquisite homage to Louisa May Alcott’s timeless classic, Little Women, Hello Beautiful is a profoundly moving portrait of what is possible when we choose to love someone not in spite of who they are, but because of it.

Thumbs up. Amazing, heartbreaking

Hello Beautiful. Sorry, it’s not a story I couldn’t put down. The story repeated itself, not one I would probably recommend.

Deesley

Way, way, way too long. Way, way, way too long. Had to force read to finish.

WakeuplittleSuzue

An enjoyable read. While it took me time to feel the characters, I did end up a strong sense of each and very much enjoyed them and their lives. After just completing the book, I am still trying to decide if I am as happy as the Padavano family was with the neatly bow tied ending. Where did all that messiness go? All in all a very enjoyable read.

YayaNetski

Hello Beautiful. Interesting story of the bond of sisterhood and the strength of individuals to find themselves and find ‘true love’.

Love love love. Love love love

Family saga. I liked the family bond, disliked the length of time it took for them to reunite.

Keeps Getting Better. This book just gets better and better as you read. It’s like joining a party where everyone is having a great time but you are not quite there yet. But you feel good and you like being there. So you stay. And the reward is that everything becomes magical. Read this book and stay with it so you can experience its magic!

Didn’t love this. I found the characters flat, one dimensional, and the plot predictable. I thought this was kind of a corny book. I expected better of an Oprah’s Book Club selection for some reason and this was a disappointment. There was one passage I really liked, though — where Kent, I think, talked to Alice about people who die when they’re old being like old trees whose roots have loosened in the earth so the tree falls softly, but those who die too young have their roots ripped violently from the earth in a way that’s painful and disturbing to witness. I’ve lost loved ones old and young, and I found that analogy very apt and very moving.

Little Women Redux. Remarkable

Thebonnyharris

Heartbreaking and Beautiful. This book is gorgeous. The prose is astounding. Beautiful characters .

Robinfoxpoint

Lost and found. William is a lost boy and man until he meets the Padavano family. The four sisters and their parents are unstoppable forces of nature. Coming into their orbits us to change you forever. This was the most satisfying novel I’ve read in a long time. 500+ pages in 24 hours. Could not put it down. These characters will stay with me for a long time.

Gogetlo

Good Read. I always enjoy family dramas and this one is no exception. Wraps up pretty neatly.

GWYNEDD READER

Hello Beautiful. A bit sappy and too “neat” a story line.

AboutBigTime

Hello Beautiful…worth the read. Truly enjoyed this read. Found some of the storyline a suspension to reality, but found this tender and tragic tale worthy of consumption.

All about the book

Great book!. Easy read. Loved the characters and the way the story flowed.

MissRx929

Slow and tedious read. This was a hard read for me. It captured my attention at first but was repetitive and dragged on at the end. I recommend skipping this one, so many other great books to spend your time on.

Eruthb

Why?. I kept waiting for it to get better but it continued to disappoint. The characters were flat and uninteresting; the story predictable. The writer explained things that this reader found obvious.

$@nd@y

This story!. The book allowed the reader to live in each character’s emotions while dealing with life. In reading this story my emotions were raw and real for each character’s challenges. The character with mental health issues was written with clarity, sensitivity and compassion. Thank you.

A masterpiece. I blew off my entire day and read it in one sitting. Beautiful story, beautifully written.

Nutzaboutcooking

Such a wonderful book. Love, loss, family, friendship, forgiveness……it’s all there Wrapped up beautifully in this book.

Hannah_30000

Hello Beautiful. Loved this book! Modern take on Little Women is exactly what this book is and more. Sisterhood at its core.

Akbaird

A Great Book Club Pick!. This book will rip your heart out before slowly putting it back together and developing into a heartwarming story. A well told story that highlights many issues including childhood neglect/ abandonment, trauma, and depression and the dangers of not getting help for them. This book highlights the ups and downs of William’s life and how his childhood experiences shaped his adulthood. William felt he was never recognized as a child until boys on the basketball court invited him to play. His parents didn’t pay much attention to him, due to his parents grieving about his sister’s death. Therefore, William knew he had to create the life he wanted on his own. Thanks to advice he was given early on about basketball, he was able to be successful in high school, where he was awarded a scholarship to play for Northwestern University. William found support in his college girlfriend Julia, who supported him along with her family throughout college. William and Julia ended up getting married. William’s life is consumed with basketball, teaching, grad-school, his wife and a new baby, but will this be enough? Is this the life that makes him happy? This book will have you turning the pages to find out. I loved how even though the book was focused on William, the author chose to have each chapter from a different perspective, including William. Each chapter that was not from the perspective of William was from a person who was important to William, such as his wife, daughter, sister-in-law, on their perspectives and how he affected their lives. This author does a good job of capturing the struggles and grief of the characters! This book is not for the light-hearted as it dives into heavy-hitting topics. Even though this book will leave you feeling satisfied in the end, it’s one of those stories that leaves a lasting impression! Perfect for those who are fans of Elizabeth Strout and Elizabeth Berg as this book reminds me a lot of books written by them. A great book club pick as well as this will lead to many interesting discussions.

RS7Rue

Pass on this terrible story. This book is so boring and it feels like the characters ramble on and on. I would skip pages because every passage was repetitive and dull.

Pls913

Beautiful, complicated story. I really enjoyed this book. Family, life and love is so complicated!

Chuckleedee

Good read. EZ, with a few twists.

Lakergrl24

Epic story about family. Follows 4 sisters through the ups and downs life throws at us. It’s simplistic in nature but woven into the story is a sincerity and thoughtfulness that offers up empathy in the oddest circumstances, especially regarding the fragility of depression. Not all the characters are likable which proves they are flawed as all humans are. This book makes you think and gives you more to think about once you finish it.

Richard Bakare

Beautifully Heartbreaking. Ann Napolitano has crafted a timeless story centered around the perpetual human fault of talking but not listening. “Hello Beautiful” highlights how we rarely know everyone in their truest sense no matter how much we talk to them. This lack of understanding can set us up to idealize or make villainous people without really knowing them. So much of the dialogue is used to spotlight the way we often say, “why didn’t you tell me,” when the real question is, “why didn’t you ask?” Napolitano leans into this dynamic along with our innate need for privacy to walk us through the lives of unintentionally messy people. Principally we get a family that is broken, healed, and then reformed by the truth. Even in the healing moments Napolitano’s pacing and scene setting shows us how pride costs us so much in time and connections. Moreover, we glimpse for some characters the freedom, even if limited, that self realization brings. Contrastingly we see the false sense of surety other characters wrap themselves in through their need for control. In the end this novel shows us how in the end that trying to escape the past leaves one doomed to repeat it. In that way it is beautifully heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. Napolitano’s clever use of time jumps and perspective changes gives us the full 360 of life. “Hello Beautiful” will give you a little bit of everything love has to offer; the humor, love, and seething frustrations.

Short-

Great read. I didn’t want to put the book down, or even have an end. The characters were so thought out, so well described, so relatable. I loved this book.

Elisenana

Not so beautiful. This book was so boring. I kept waiting for something to really interest me but it never did. I did get through all of it and was extremely disappointed that really nothing of interest ever happened. The characters were cookie cutter and predictable. Waste of time.

DMHDEHJAH

All we need is love. In a word: the power of love and forgiveness, and the connectedness they provide to those brazen enough to embrace; to live with an open heart. This was one of the more powerful stories I’ve come across recently, and an absolute pleasure to read.

DeniseJY

DEEPLY MELANCHOLY NOVEL OF A FRACTURED FAMILY. If I had had a better idea of how this sad book would unfold I never would have started it. As a person who has struggled for decades with suicidal depression, I didn’t need to read about these women’s circumscribed lives, capacity for self-deception, and willingness to inflict harm on their daughters, not to mention husbands and lover. Suffocating.

GLC2551

Long and Repetive. Interesting in many ways with some great insight but I felt relief when it ended.

Jenny2365

Amazing novel. I loved this book. It is a beautiful story about family and unending love.

Ti$$@ny

I looked forward to this book…. Each day I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next with this family. Although the ending left me wanting and felt rushed I really liked it.

RetiredPostalWorker

Wonderful book. I can’t believe how much this book has affected me. This was a wonderful story. I will remember it for some time.

SandiSwimme

Hello Beautiful. One in a while a book comes along that leaves me longing for more. The characters and the setting just draw me in and I want more of them. Hello Beautiful is one of those books, and I’m okay with letting it go knowing these characters are going to be okay. Yes, they were that real to me.
