Geralt the Witcher—revered and hated—holds the line against the monsters plaguing humanity in this collection of adventures, the first chapter in Andrzej Sapkowski’s groundbreaking epic fantasy series that inspired the hit Netflix show and the blockbuster video games.

Geralt is a Witcher, a man whose magic powers, enhanced by long training and a mysterious elixir, have made him a brilliant fighter and a merciless hunter. Yet he is no ordinary killer. His sole purpose: to destroy the monsters that plague the world.

But not everything monstrous-looking is evil and not everything fair is good . . . and in every fairy tale there is a grain of truth.

Is Complimented by the Show Beautifully. This book is the original and the Netflix show is an adaptation. However, the show does a great job of complimenting this book beautifully! The book is a tour de force of Geralt’s adventures that you can totally imagine in high def thanks to the show. Some of the adventures in the book should have been more faithfully adapted in the show like the scene with the Djinn. But live-action is constrained by budgets and technical/effects/CGI challenges—I get that. That’s why I am very pleased to go deeper into the world of The Witcher with these books while I watch the show… Time for ‘Sword of Destiny’!

The ending!. I enjoyed this book until the ending. There was no closure or say what happen, but again first book I read of the series.

Diag0nal

The books only make me love the Witcher more. Started with the games and now I am reading the books. This is by far one of my favorite franchises of all time!

KG No Fear

The last wish. Good read

DamesandersT

Excellent reading. Take a large cup of J.R.R. Tolkien, add a bit of the Brothers Grimm, a dash of Chaucer, a pinch of Dante, some Shakespeare and a bit of Alexander Dumas then combine with a brilliant imagination and you’ve got a terrific experience waiting for you. I completely loved this book and am already on the second one. Brilliant storytelling! I am officially a fan now.

Phil101williams

New reader. I’m new to the series. I loved it! Sometimes it was hard to follow but it was a good read!

Symwen

Couldn’t Put it Down. As a big fan of both the video games and (sadly) short-lived TV series, I’m wishing I’d had the patience to read the books first! Anyone criticising this book’s “lack of continuity” is forgetting that it’s a collection of short stories. It does a fantastic job with character development and setting the tone for future events to take place. Exciting, compelling, unique… Don’t bother me, I’m about to read them all!

Lunchboxxx-21

Loved it. This book was great!

Dylan928371819

Great title. Prob a player of the games, and someone who never reads this was amazing. I played all 3 Witcher games before reading this, I have watched all of Game of Thrones but never read the books, decided to give it a go for the Witcher Series and I’m glad I did, might try the Song Of Ice And Fire next but man this book was great can’t wait to read Sword of Destiny

Dann_boy52295

Magical. I loved the adventure

J-Dog1997

Witcher: Book 1. Good read. Very entertaining

Lokeybrandon

Witcherrrrr. Typical Witcher story if you already know about Geralt. Just a great character with good sun characters. Well written and doesn’t drag on with two chapters describing the decor of a ballroom or some other non sense.

Amazing. Read this book, it is well written, and it is very interesting and fun to read!! JUST DO IT!

Puppy Peppy

Nice. I watched the movie and it was amazing 🤩

WeiboFan1

Excellent. I have played the games & watched the Netflix series season 1. The book was great entertainment.

Sidmongo

Thanks, Netflix. After finishing the third season of Witcher on Netflix I decided to read the stories that inspired the series. I’d seen how bad the story could be written, now I wanted to see how well it was originally written. Thank you Netflix for inspiring me to read a well crafted, entertains story so different from what I watched.

Bc5584

Love it!. I played the game first and from that it really intrigued me. The books are great and I really wish there more

Darkmuze

Classic Fantasy at its best!. I was worried about the translation but needn’t have been. It was well worth the time.

Better than the show. Pleasantly surprised by the book’s pace

It'sLiterature

Critically Acclaimed Books, Game of 2015, Netflix Original Series. The title speaks for itself. The world of the Witcher is as rich, vibrant, and seamless as any other in the fantasy genre. That being said, do not read these books thinking that they are an extension of the show or video game. The books stand alone and bring something completely different to the table. Rather than being the fulcrum upon which the world’s fate turns, Geralt of Rivia is a largely passive but powerful bystander through which the story is told. Rather than being the one to enact change, Geralt more often than not comes into contact with agents of change and engages in moral and philosophical discussions about the repercussions of their actions. These pseudo-symposiums are punctuated with detailed monster biology, political intrigue, and brutal sword fights. Be prepared to see classic fantasy tropes told through the lens of a truly neutral character.

Fabbas23

Kind of slow. The book has way to many segments of just uninteresting chatter that goes on for to many pages. Most of it is not important and just goes on. The characters the Geralt interacts with don’t show up again so what is the point of having this detail. Sure they show Geralt a personal ideals but it could have been done at a better pace. The parts were Geralt fights monsters and interacts with them is super exciting. It’s a good book just to not much talking.

WillYCohle

Cannot download it on iPhone X. I’ve read this wonderful book before on my iPhone 6. Recently I bought an X and the download cannot be started. I am wondering if it happens to other devices other than an X.

Hdjekemensb7

Witcher 1 review. This collection of short stories is very good and entertaining. Some are better than others, but I enjoyed it throughout. If you are a fan of the games or want to play them in the future this book is a great place to gain some knowledge on the world and characters.

Thechoedenkal

Disappointing.. The book was disappointing. Remarkably so.

Bashole

Excellent fantasy series. I decided to read the books before watching the series because, let’s be honest, the books are always better. I’m glad I did, this book is very well done and a true joy to read. The storyline is really well laid out and it’s centered on sarcastic characters. Having been in many life and death situations and knowing first hand the changes this makes to people it’s a pleasure to read something where the characters are tarnished with their lots in life.

Bryaeric

Great Book. Geralt recalls his adventures to a priestess. Not told necessarily linear, but gives you a good idea of Geralt’s character and personality. Recommend reading it.

Drew 25252252525262

Deep Intriguing Fiction. Well written fictional world, great characters and short engaging stories. I am looking forward to seeing where the books take Geralt of Rivia next.

Shin2face

I don't say this very often. With such a broad story that Geralt has it seems that it's been pin pointed down to this one storyline. Missing a lot of detail that makes the book pretty bland. I hate to say this and I don't think I ever have but even the Netflix show is better than this book. Just go watch the show. You'll be more satisfied.

Whim1954

witcher. What a great story. Fairy tales wound in like days of yore. i’m mostly a sci-fi fan but have been enchanted by Geralt of Rivia and the sorceress Yennifer.. Highly recommend the series.

JV@work

Boring.... Bunch of disconnected stories... pretty boring book.

Jiefu8725

Loved it. Coming from Witcher 3 and hearing the great reviews, this book did not disappoint. I’ve also heard reviews saying the writing/translations are not good, but unless you’re a hardcore critic, then they are honestly fine. I didn’t notice any jarring writing and thoroughly enjoyed the book!

6472749

Just watch it on Netflix.. I enjoyed the series, so I thought I’d read this while waiting for the next season. That was a mistake. The writing (or maybe just the translation?) is amateurish, and the dialogue is like something out a 1940s gangster movie.

Blackdragonashes

Dumb and short I want a refund!. I only read it because I was curious about the Netflix show. The book was SO much worse then I imagined. If I could give it a negative stars I would. I want a refund

Funny, charming, easy read. Very enjoyable.

Awesome read. One of my first books to finish.

JoshuaMD86

Awesome. Awesome

Mrszorak44

Awesome. I love the Witcher game so much that I wanted to know more about the characters of the game and their history so I could relate more in the game. Reading the book just made me appreciate the characters more and gave me a new understanding of the game. Amazing read!

VanillaTaco02

AMAZING. Just went through about 20 some playthroughs of The Witcher 3, (not joking) and just got the content jitters. Finally picked up the first book and by god, it’s fantastic! I can’t wait to read the rest!

Aminodna

The Witcher The Last Wish. Amazing, very in depth and grasping! Love the story arcs and how it is written! Onto the next book Swords of Destiny!!!

Caseyisobnoxious

Must read!. Geralt of Rivia is a character I absolutely adore. He’s witty, sarcastic, but also does whatever he thinks is right. I first discovered the Witcher when I played the Witcher 3 game on PS4. Then the Netflix adaptation came out. And now I’m reading the books. I can’t recommend this series enough. If you love fantasy and the like, especially crazy and imaginative beasts and creatures, these books are for you.

Laladien

Keeps you guessing. A collection of adventures that slowly provides insight into the character of the witcher. Just when you feel like you know him, he makes a decision that surprises you as the reader. You finish the book wanting to go on to the next one.

Holder30

Incredible. This book and series has given me a love for reading!

Zombie Bill 999

Great read.. Very good

Redvess

Loved it. Fast paced when it needed to be. Slowed down to take in the scenery and really make the reader feel like an eye witness to this fantastic story.

Hjgjgvjvjhgvmhgcjhgvukgg

Nice. .

Miiiiiracle

Really Good Intro into the World. Be warned there are some stories and characters in this book that you won’t see until Season 2 of the show but it’s still a really good read

Mollyfisch

Fun read. I like the short story format. A fun read that has me wanting more!

Axeren234

Superb. An amazing start to Geralt’s story.

WordsInAWhisper

Excellent. andrzej sapkowski has crafted an amazing collection of tales. this is a collection of short stories interwoven with a single story that connects them all. each story references a different fairy tale. the 1st about the princess Renfri is a thinly veiled reference to snow white and the 7 dwarves, following this if you look carefully you will find references to sleeping beauty, beauty and the beast, the bible in the book of revelation, Rumpelstiltskin, and others. and yet, the author takes these stories in completely new and unexpected directions. despite the obvious inspiration from fairy tales, it’s clear this is the beginning of an original tale that will be epic in scope.

Amazing. This book is an amazing read from start to finish.

A Conscientious Reader

Geralt is that guy. This tha bomb. Geralt is that guy! Oh man oh man. Here we go again!

Stwear

Not impressed. Reads like a series of short stories with one protagonist and no plot or character development except main character. Unsatisfying but decently written with some interesting adversaries and moral commentary.

Steven C Blomkamp

Thoroughly entertaining. Having been introduced to Andrezej Sapkowski's work through the excellent Witcher RPGs, I was still hesitant to read the original literature that inspired the games. To be honest, I don't read novels often. At all, in fact. But one day I decided to take the plunge and thank goodness I did - if you loved the games or even just the sound of dark fantasy grounded with moral ambiguity, refreshingly realistic characters and startlingly realized action, you will definitely enjoy this book. I'm getting started on his second Witcher book, Blood of Elves, immediately. And then I will probably play through the games again as I can't seem to get enough. enjoy!

Rubia conlentes

Amazing. Truly fantastic bloody dark fairy tale fantasy, witty and sad and deep and silly, surreal but down to earth.

A gripping setting, but thinly developed.. A great start to a world I've come to love, but very little actually happens in the first book.

Pie.iz.good.fur.u.

Almost Perfect!. This book is great and tells some great and well written stories about Geralt of Rivia, but a confusing overarching plot with an almost nonsensical cliffhanger holds it back from being perfect.

I'm not giving my name...

Excellent. Excellent

SanguiloPraetoris

If Conan the Barbarian (sort of) used Magic.... ...he'd be Geralt of Rivia.

5/5. I liked it

MitchMitchumMitchell

Fantastic fantasy. I'm a huge fan of the witches video games and that's what drew me to the books. I didn't know what to expect but I can say this book is fantastically written and a page turner. Gerald of Rivia has become my favorite fictional protagonist and his story is becoming one of my favorite fantasy stories ever. If you're a fantasy fan or a fan of the video games this is a MUST

Snuggalorian

Hidden gem, must read. This book is what I call a rarity. It is not often that I find a book that I read entirely in one single night, and it is a longer book. The book itself inspired an entire video-game series, so needless to say it is one of the best I've read in some time. If you're into ancient mythical times, then look no further. The plot is fairly complex with both books from this author should you be interested in a second helping, though the read itself is fairly ways to follow. I will be surprised if this book does not create a movie, though casting the right person to play Geralt of rivia should prove to be impossible. My best opinion for you if you are on the 'I don't know' phase is to grab the sample and just read. I was captivated for the majority of that alone. Happy Reading, -Snuggalorian

Robe & Wizard Hat

A world in gray. A unique and thoroughly enjoyable read from beginning to end. Presents many interesting and fresh takes on fantasy cliches and human nature. The short stories are well written (and translated )for the most part, but occasionally the dialogue and action are hard to follow. Modern words, swears, and phrases are often used which can be immersion breaking for some. All and all an excellent introduction to a very different series.

Shootsalot

The last wish. Simplistic, uses slightly altered fairy tales, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast and others. A disjointed series of short stories with no continuity.

Danzig424

The Witcher oh yeah !. After playing both Witcher games i became enthralled with the world and characters, amd political and dark themes this book portrayed. Its not your typical medieval tale or tales as this book is made out to be . Geralt is interesting and the way he interacts with people is amazing some very creative writing cant wait for the rest of the books to be translated .

Symwen

Couldn’t Put it Down. As a big fan of both the video games and (sadly) short-lived TV series, I’m wishing I’d had the patience to read the books first! Anyone criticising this book’s “lack of continuity” is forgetting that it’s a collection of short stories. Amazing. Excellent story

Victor H.

Definitively Worth It. A fun read about some of Geralt's most interesting adventures. The book is well written, and always gives the reader an interesting twist. Definitively worth the read if you are a fantasy fan, or want to know the backstory to the Witcher games.

Jack Sawyer1001

Excellent read.. Have the Xbox game Wicher 2 and was curious about how it all began. This book will be my first purchase, I'll be buying the next two. Well written, interesting and different. Very refreshing.

Beasty17379054110064

Flawless. A perfect mixture of darkness, humor, mystery, and violence. Throughout all the stories you can always pick out one detail; An ongoing feeling of dark loneliness.. Feeling like deep inside Geralt feels true sorrow for turning out how he is. The witcher is a must read, if you haven't got it, get it.
