The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett
The Color of Magic by Terry Pratchett Book Summary
“In the history of comic fantasy, Mr. Pratchett has no equals for invention or for range. . . . Those who don’t [know him] can do no better than to buy installment No. 1, The Color of Magic and read right the way through.”—Wall Street Journal
In this first novel in the internationally bestselling Discworld series from legendary New York Times bestselling author Sir Terry Pratchett (and the first in the Wizards collection), the fate of the Discworld depends on the survival of a naïve—and first-ever—sightseer.
A writer of brilliant imagination favorably compared to Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, and Douglas Adams, Sir Terry Pratchett created a complex, satirical universe with its own set of cultures and rules, populated with wizards, witches, academics, fairies, policemen, and other creatures both fantastical and remarkably ordinary (including Death himself). Welcome to the Discworld . . . a parallel time and place that sounds and smells very much like our own, but looks completely different—because it’s a flat world sitting on the backs of four elephants who hurtle through space balanced on a giant turtle.
In this, the maiden voyage through Terry Pratchett’s ingeniously twisted alternate dimension, the well-meaning but spectacularly inept wizard Rincewind encounters something previously unknown in the Discworld: a tourist!
Twoflower has arrived to take in the sights. Unfortunately, he’s cast his lot with a most inappropriate tour guide—a decision that could result in his becoming not only Discworld’s first visitor . . . but quite possibly, its last. And, of course, he’s brought Luggage along, a companion with feet—and a mind—of its own. And teeth. . . .
The Discworld novels can be read in any order, but the other books in the Wizards collection include:

Definitely worth a read. Excellently witty and absurd with moments that you will never forget, even if they are a little hard to follow at times.
If you like the humor in Good Omens, you need to read these books. If you like the humor in Good Omens, you need to read these books. It seems like Terry Pratchett must've written all of the parts that I enjoyed about that book. These Discworld books are great!
Begin Here. This is the first book in the series, and what a start it is. Fantastically hilarious, insanely ingenious, and wholly original, right from the get go. This is not Harry Potter, I would say it's much more like a fantasy Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy, which is just one more reason to love it!
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Picture yourself in a boat on a river with octarine trees and marmalade skies. It seems as if this author was using the same inspiration as the Beatles when they recorded Sgt. Pepper's. The sudden shifts of reality, outrageous scenery, hidden worlds, and unbelievable events that somehow seem to make sense. It's too familiar to be coincidence. The irrepressible lack of logic reminds me of Tom Robbins but without the depth of emotion. All in all this book is more like a Yellow Submarine. It's short, silly, and entertaining but it's not much without the soundtrack.
Interesting though fantastic.. Well written, yet a little too silly for me. But the characters are interesting and it leaves you wanting more.
Does what a good story is supposed to.. A reinvention of reality that shows me a reflection of the real world while telling me something interesting. I’m sorry to have come across this so late, and happy that there’s so much to look forward to.
I'm happy to see disc world in the iPad store. What else would I use as my first iPad reading experience? While this isn't the best book in the series it is still a classic. If you enjoy fantasy books like Harry potter, Abarat and Lord of the Rings, you will fall in love with the Discworld series and the authors writing style.
Perfect. …for getting away, cheering up, a good laugh, a good think, a great escape!
Love it. I absolutely love this series. And this book is the beginning.
