I was on the edge of my seat with every turn of a page. I couldn’t believe how close yet how far they were the whole time to catching the man responsible!!Each character had interesting background stories that was essential to how they were portrayed in the investigation! Good book, have to read what case DI Harte is going to solve next.

I would’ve like to read more about the reunion of Luke and is wife. I also didn’t understand the situation with Gina and her husband. He died years earlier and her daughter was an adult she should’ve told her the truth.

I really enjoyed the book with one exception, the relationship between DI Harte and her bratty daughter. It made no sense that Gina hadn’t told her the truth about her father. She’s a grown woman with a child, and the nonsense about her insisting her mother come to a memorial service 20 years after his death was hard to fathom. She was only two when he died, so why give her mother so much grief because she didn’t want to come? She deserved to know how badly he’d hurt and abused her mother. It could have spared them both a lot of hurt feelings and guilt. Other than that bit, it was a good book.

It felt unfinished. I wanted to know what happened to Deborah and her family!

1 star less for the gruesome details of flue, repeatedly.

So good!!! Story told in multiple different perspectives. Each book has its own story but the main characters develops throughout the books. So good I’ve committed to finishing the series.

Nice story intriguing each chapter of info!

I loved reading this book! I hated being interrupted while reading it. 😂 The story is captivating and pulls you right into the book. The way the author describes everything makes you feel as if it’s happening to you.

Great suspense mystery

Enjoyed the book and the characters in it. Glad it ended well she didn’t give up through all of that!

The good - the plot was interesting and certainly unique. The portions of the book directly relating to the case were most interesting and had me on the edge of my seat especially towards the end. The bad - this book needs a better editor. Badly. Additionally I understand this is the first book to introduce this detective and much of the book is an attempt to set up recurring plot points and themes that will likely be explored within the subsequent books. With that being said, during those more expositiony points within the book I found myself hoping the author would return to the case specifics as the personal life of the detective was not drawing me in as I’m sure the author intended. Overall, I didn’t hate this book but I often found it dragging as they steered away from the investigation and into the detectives personal life with family drama and dating mishaps. The book could have been half as long and still be a good detective book.

I like very much this book from beginning trough the end . Engaging story well don.

Not my favorite kind of story

It’s not a scam. You have to “GET” the book. Not choose “SAMPLE”. I just downloaded it for free

Couldn’t put this down read it in 24 hours!!

This book was so good I didn’t want it to end. Even though as the end drew near, I kept reading faster. A great read. I really felt I knew the characters. I could visualize everything and everyone in my minds eye. Anxious to read another book.

You can only read 55 pages before paying to read the rest, calling it “book 2” even though it says the book is 300+ pages!

I’m not usually a crime-reader but I was completely engrossed in every detail throughout this book. I finished it in a day, and legitimately could not put it down. The multi-character story telling was really well written and the character’s all having backstories made them seem real. Definitely recommend! **SPOILER ALERT** I wish there had been more follow up on the family once Debbie was found. After reading her and her husband’s POV, it was a bummer not to read their reunion through his or her POV. I was glad when they solved the case, but with the only follow up being the epilogue in Gina’s POV, it felt anticlimactic for all the emotional buildup stressed throughout the book.

I don’t know if this book has been proof read or edited, but the grammar is subpar. Many missed words and horrible grammar. After the first chapter, I had to stop reading because of the mistakes.

This was by far one of my favorite books to read…. I just really wish their was a book about Luke and Debbie’s life after the hospital. Like what it was like getting back to normal and haven the kids back…..

I want to hear more about Luke and Deb now!!!

Could not put it down.

Took a while to figure it out. Characters were well written. You could feel the urgency and I had trouble putting it down.

I’m not much of a reader, but since purchasing a new ipad I figured why not. This book was phenomenal. I couldn’t put it down.

Definitely keeps you guessing til the end! Couldn’t put it down!

The start of an amazing series with DI Harte and her little police family. Read them all!

I read this book in 2-3 days. It went so quickly because the suspense is a page turner. It does not disappoint. I bought the next book immediately after reading the epilogue :)

It was probably the quickest book I ever read. It sucked me in immediately. It had just the right amount of suspense without being too ridiculous. The author did a good job at making the villain very creepy. The author also did a great job on the visualization of the story. I would have liked to see how the side stories would have wrapped up, but I get it.

It jumped a little in the beginning setting up characters. The story line kept you guessing and not want to put it down. You’ll enjoy this book!

Read it in less than 24 hours! Amazing!

This was unimaginable. That someone could survive captivity for so long is heartbreaking. The characters are fantastic and the author keeps the reader guessing until the last few chapters.

Dirty book. Do not read.

Different points felt like it dragged. However, overall I couldn’t put it down.

Really enjoyed this book a bit slow in beginning, still good book. Thanks k

This book was very fast moving, and had me up reading all night. I loved the suspense and the swirl of the characters as the moved through the story. Good read!!

Well written & kept my interest. I recommend this if you are interested in lots of mystery & who done it. camie12Jan.2023

Book was gripping in the story telling, but felt too redundant. Too many expressions repeated over multiple characters over multiple occasions. Scene descriptions felt forced at time of urgency. At times, it felt being dragged to fill up the pages. A lot of time spent in imaginative inner voice narrations, what ifs and possibilities than actual events. 250 pages out of 570 were pretty binding and interesting. Mystery was well created, characters were well built, and some situation/scene descriptions were pretty amazingly worded. However, as a reader, you feel like the writer or editor overdid the details with overwhelming similar brushstroke patterns all over the canvas!

Incredibly written and suspenseful. Love the way it builds and each point of view

Finished book in 3 days. It was awesome! I couldn’t put it down!

Can't put it down even though it is hard to read so much pain. Sadly it has happened to many. Fran

And km

A little slow and some padding of the story in a couple of areas but I give the book a rating of 5 because it was a cracking good story. Well done.

Strong start but messy ending

Set in UK small town precinct, serial killer delusional kidnapper, rapist, matricide, general lowlife. High action and events make sense from a crazy persons point of view. Enjoyed this story.

Love it. But things are really going too fast…

how has no one made a review about the author doing zero proof reading? the amount of misspelling and incorrect grammar in this book is kind of horrifying, and i only made it to the 4th page.

I have been trying to start reading more and the description drew me in. Once I started reading it I couldn’t put it down!

A very gripping book. Well written.

This was a decent book and I found myself not wanting to put it down a couple of times, but the overall story was not overly gripping. I would still be open to reading some of the author’s other books.

Fast paced, lots of action good ending. Read it.

Well done 👏👏👏 riveting, thrilling, just what a thriller mystery should be! Thanks for the great read!

meh. i read to the end because i wanted to know if Gina would tell Hannah the truth. the writing was repetitive and the book could’ve been a short story without all the snotty noses, copious tears, and boring dialogue

I could not and did not want to put this book down! The story is gripping and keeps you on the edge of your seat from the beginning. Very well written. I highly suggest this book if you like crime thrillers!

Wow, the pages kept turning as I became totally engrossed in the double sided drama between the detective & the perpetrator & everything else in between. Now onto the next in a long line of this author’s writings.

Loved reading this book and couldn’t put it down. Very terrible ending. Just fizzled out with no real wrap up. Extremely disappointing.

A fairly standard police procedural about a kidnapped woman and the police’s attempts to locate her. The detective Gina Harte is likable enough and the story has a few interesting facets, as Gina battles her own past demons of domestic abuse. It was fairly predictable though and a bit melodramatic in places. I wouldn’t read any more in the series.

Well written. Keeps you in the moment. Hard to put down.

The book was interesting and kept me intrigued. There was good character development and the pacing worked well I did not think this novel had many thriller aspects and I felt that the ending\reveal was a let down. However, still a good read.

I couldn’t stop reading until I finished a headache and lack of sleep were worth it

The only thing not to like is you end up unable to put it down, so be prepared for a late night.

Truly awfully written. What twist? I kept reading hoping for a return on my time but got nothing.

Excellent!

Great mystery novel and really compelling but right at the end there’s no real reason for the kidnapping. The killer is apprehended but there was no reason for the initial kidnapping.

So much potential for a great story! The story line is so good but sadly disappointed with 90% of this book.Writing and dialog - boring, predictable with no depth. One star is being generous!

Poor Deborah. I could feel each emotion through every character’s part. This book had me crying at the end. Loved this book. Can’t wait to read the next one.

An abandoned baby requires police to revisit a 4yr old cold case about Deborah who vanished one night. DI Gina boldly leads the case with a particular personal interest in domestic violence against women. Story told through Deborah and Gina’s POV. Great suspense story.

"The Next Girl" is a great book, that draws you in from the first page. Learning Gina's history is good, and it's written in such a way as to not overshadow the main plot. My only gripe would be that the spelling and grammar could be better. When I'm lost in the story, and the words are incorrect, it can be off putting.

Very well written with a strong, realistice, relatable female lead. So many layers and intriguing twists and turns. A great read, looking forward to starting the next one.

A story that keeps you turning pages to the end, can't wait to read the next ones!

Within few pages, I knew who the culprit was.

Didn’t really enjoy this one unfortunately. Found it quite boring, lots of unnecessary detail, and very simplistic plot line.

It’s the first book in a while which gripped me in a “can’t put it down” way. Recommend the read!

I enjoyed this book. The suspense was well structured and rose dramatically as the end of the book loomed. Thought it was really good and can’t wait until the next book comes out.

I was hooked! The author really takes you to a different place without being over the top with descriptions. At times a pinch of humour added. The story was gripping and I couldn’t put the book down! Excellent.

Gripping! Couldn’t put it done! A must read

Excellent read - my wife and I both Loved it !!!

Gripped me from the start!!

Gripping, couldn’t put it down. Thanks so much to the author.

Loved the journey

100 pages in and no idea what is going on, maybe it all comes together but 7 chapters is a generous try! Each chapter changes stories and characters.

Absolutely loved this book ! Can’t wait to read about Gina again soon

Good story, just found a few things a little hard to believe..but finished the book.

Bit of a slow start but once I worked out who the characters were and their significance to the story, I really enjoyed it.

I have not read a book for years & I finished this over two days. Simple story, easy to read & keep up with the characters & story line. Wish more had been given to the ending. I enjoyed it but looking for a more challenging read.

The best crime novel I have read to date. The novel has you gripped right from the very beginning putting you almost in a trance as all’s you can think about is the book, so much so I’ve finished it in less than 24 hours! The way that the author makes it so there is so many different ways one thing can go and leaves you edging to know the outcome and the rollercoaster of emotions that they cleverly put you through, it is just absolutely phenomenal! It is a masterpiece!

It was nice for there to be a happy ending

A good read I couldn’t wait to find out what happened!!

5*

Well written, gripping storyline and relatable characters. Highly recommended

The book in itself was pretty good, enjoyed the plot and some of the characters but some sections felt rushed, with some bits not reading well and a slip up on a characters name once or twice which took me out of it a bit. Still think it’s worth the read but definitely not for the faint hearted.

I don’t usually read this type of book but found this spellbinding. Read it in 2 days as I couldn’t put it down.

Started reading 3 days ago and have just finished it today. Gripping and exciting. Cannot wait to read the rest of the detective series!

My New Year’s resolution was to start reading and my god this was a great way to start. This book had me gripped from page 1 and at times had my heart racing. I’ve already downloaded the next in the series.

Couldn’t put this down, really good read, somethings were predictable but still a good read. Wish it would’ve said more about the husband & wife’s reunion though at the end

Loved this book I couldn’t put it down

I could not stop reading at any point, leading to many hours of turning pages and anticipating the next surprise. A truly fantastic read, definitely wanting to read the rest of the series now! :)

This book takes some putting down. The storyline moves at a fast pace, along with the numerous twists and turns you are hooked

A gripping tale. Remember to breathe

Overall,I found the book amazing, except for at times when Debbie managed to get away but then Jeff found her,the author put too many chapters in between the next scene of Debbie to write about Gina interviewing people linked to Debbie’s disappearance even though they have very little information. The author also wrote a lot unnecessary information and made the story extremely slow in the middle. The end was satisfying to read after wasting time reading about Gina’s perspective.Still a good book,I recommend to people with incredible patience.

Loved this and loved the twist at the end

Couldn’t put the book down, really enjoyed it

Loved this book so much

Had me gripped from the beginning, you felt ‘right there’ with the characters. Starting the next one in the series and looking forward to the read.

One of the best books I’ve read in a while!!

This book grabbed me and pulled me in really quickly. Full of suspense but also human emotion and well developed characters. Thoroughly recommended.

I was hooked from the very start. Finished it in 2 sittings. DI Gina Harte is my new fav!

The first of many in the series, a very good read and so gripping. Having read a few in the series now I really enjoy her style and method of writing, not to mention the stories themselves. I have now finished the fifth and is just as good as the first. Brilliant author.

5 Stars ... Couldn’t put it down. Gripped me from the moment I picked it up. A very interesting concept that builds with intensity until the very last page. I’ve downloaded the rest of the series already!

I love a good detective book and honestly I’ve read all 4 books in this series in the past week and have loved each and every chapter of them! Highly recommend these books to anyone! Amazing.

I enjoyed the book but just could not stand how much reference there was to the detective & officer having colds & too much detail about nose blowing & spitting lol. I like to enjoy a cuppa & read but had to drink first or I’d be put off. I thought the amount of times it was referred to & detail was so weird. Just bizarre. Good read if you’re not put off by that kind of thing

I enjoyed this book a lot, it kept me gripped and wanting to know more throughout so made for a quick read. Not my favourite so far from this series (I have been reading them in the wrong order, and so far ‘her pretty bones’ is my favourite with the most twists and turns in my opinion). However, it makes for a good read and an exciting ending!

Brilliant!! Couldn’t put this down x

Best book I’ve read in ages!! Couldn’t put it down! Highly recommended. Look forward to reading the next book in this series 👍

The story had me hooked from the off, so much detail, however the ending was very quick, I was left disappointed and there was to many unanswered questions.

Hooked until the end, couldn’t put this down!

Well done Carla was a really hooking book and haven’t put it down read the whole story in 24 hours lol. Can’t wait to read the next one.

Read over a weekend. Gripping storyline. Downloading the next book in the series now!

Couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end. Easy reading, exciting, well thought out characters. Thank you!

One of the best books I have read in a very long time, totally gripping all the way through, very well written. A really good read.

Love this book well recommended

Well done!

I was gripped from start to finish. Would highly recommend. Will certainly be reading more from this author! Kerry

This is definitely a good read & holds your attention throughout. As many have pointed out though, the ending is weak and let’s it down. It could’ve done with tying up the family reunion somewhere but it was completely absent. There are the usual sub plots of a police officers personal life conflicting with their work life, together with gripes about funding, cutbacks, paperwork etc which clutter the story. Also there’s a really annoying reference to having a cold throughout which really isn’t necessary! The police procedural references are definitely not on par with Peter James but as a first novel it’s not a bad effort and is certainly entertaining.

What a fantastic book! Written beautifully and kept me on the edge of my seat until the end! Can’t wait for the next book in the DI Gina Harte series!!

Great book well worth a read can’t wait for the next one!!

Another holiday read! Couldn’t put it down once started!

Wow what a first book! Well done Carla. It is immediately engaging, I can see this being made into a movie. The end was a little bit lacking in detail somewhat, I would have expected more to have been made of the family being back together, the relationship with the children. But, none the less a brilliant book. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

Really enjoyed this book gripping

I agree with some of the fast ending but the book had me gripped from the start! Throughly a great read

Must Read of 2018 .Gripping, heart stopping.Didn’t want it to end .

Gripping from page 1 through to the end. Finished in a couple of days and was left feeling super excitement for the next instalment!

Read this quickly. Very good!

Enjoyed reading this edge of my seat read. The premise is superb, and the interaction with the characters and the emotion is brilliant.

Wasn’t expecting to enjoy this book, but was captivated by the story and how well Kovach was able to imagine the characters and scenes. A real page turner for sure!

Fast paced, hooks you immediately!

My Review: Loved, loved and more loved!!!!! What a great start to a wonderful series. This is not my first rodeo with this author and it certainly won’t be my last. I do have to admit though that I have been a bad girl and have been reading this series out of order. I know that’s not how it’s supposed to go. I started with the newer books first and now I’m going backwards getting to the older ones last. Each book can be read and very much enjoyed as a stand alone. I do want to say though that I am loving catching up with all the characters from the very beginning of their journey. It’s nice seeing the growth of every character as each book passes. Also, it’s nice to see how certain relationships first got started. I can’t wait to read more of this author and series. It’s one of my favorites. In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Why were all the characters so snotty and coughing through out the whole book?! Very distracting and had nothing to do with the narrative!

I think this was a really great story idea but the writing was subpar and disappointing! The author skimped on details......this is a thriller.....we need character development...we need to know why the villain killed......yes we know he was an only child of a doting mother but that explains none of his behavior.....did mum abuse or neglect him? Did he have any moments of epiphany in childhood or was he just a sociopath???? The writing left much to be desired

This book was gripping and exciting. I had a hard time putting it down.

I enjoyed reading this story. Held my interest and was hoping for a happy ending. Have to find out for yourself!

WOW‼️. If you love nail biting, page-turning thrillers full of twists & turns you’ll absolutely love Carla Kovach’s novel, The Next Girl‼️. Her characters are so believable - the good & the bad ones. DI Gina Harte & her team are a likable lot as are the missing woman’s family! Get your copy & Start reading today! Carol R. Florida USA

My heart pumped and hands trembled constantly. Couldn’t put it down. The ONLY reason I’m not immediately starting the next volume is because I need a little breather after this bad boy. (Trigger warning if you’re an abuse surviver. Parts were difficult to read.)

Great characters, well written, and full of suspense. Not an especially original plot, but fun to read. I’m ready to dive into her next one.

Great writing. Felt like I was a part of Harte’s team! Completely drowned in this book. Cannot wait to read book 2!!!

All the reviews were right on the same things that I would have said so there is nothing more To say except that I need more sleep so lighten up a bit hahaha 😇

I was hooked from start to finish! Good luck putting this book down! Happy to have found a new author to follow!

What’s the deal with every male character “sobbing” literally on every single page of this book? It gets pretty annoying and cringe worthy by a 1/3 of the way in. If you’re looking for a strong, kickass male character then this read is most definitely not your cup of tea...

This is a good read. Characters are interesting, the story moves along. I did find the mother-daughter conflict a little draggy, as I did with the guilt factor with the husband. I think both those areas could’ve been done a little better. All in all it was a good read. I’m not sure if I’m going to finish out this series, I just found it not as suspenseful as it was built up to be. I liked it, however it just didn’t grip me as much as I had hoped. I give it three stars.

Based on the cover, I was anticipating a big plot twist. Nothing really happens and then it ends really quickly. Let down.

I thought the book was overall a good ready. I liked the characters which is what kept me going through the story. I wanted to find out what would happen with them. I liked how the author linked Ginas story with the case she was working and showed how more often than not you’ll come across a case that directly effects you and brings out personal issues. I wasn’t bored and I hoped that the characters would make it through. It definitely isn’t the heart stopping thriller that I was expecting and that many reviews claimed it would be which is why I gave it 3 stars. The ending wasn’t overly dramatic. There was no crazy twist. Not to say it was expected but it wasn’t a mind blowing outcome. Also I’d hoped to see find out more about DI Harte. I’m not sure if the author left off the way they did because it’s to come in another book but I can’t see myself buying another book just to find out.

I loved this book!! Gulped it down in two days and looking forward to Carla’s next.

I will be prepaying for the next book. Just finished and can’t wait for the next!!! A new favorite author!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! I couldn’t put it down. Great story, great characters. Suspense on every page!

Great suspenseful book!

I completely enjoyed the book. Read it throughout one day. Well worth it.

This books kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I couldn’t put it down!

Loved the book looking forward for book 2

$2 is WAAAY too much to pay for this garbage. So poorly written, it was a chore to get through. I saw the review that said it wasn’t worth $2, but mystery set in Britain...I couldn’t help myself. Heed my warning. Just say no!

This was poorly written and sort of boring. I kept waiting for the twist described in some of the reviews but there wasn’t one. Not worth your time.

This story was captivating and I never lost interest the end had me stuck on my couch because I refused to get up before finishing... such a good read!

Could not put it down. Writing is so good, characters come alive, and plot is very satisfying. Can’t wIt for her next one.

Too much mucous and everyone with a tear running down their cheek. Coulda, shoulda been a good book, but wasn’t

DI Harte is amazing! Such a good book! I couldn’t stop reading it! Finished in three days! Can’t wait for the next one! Such an excellent and intriguing character and the author is so descriptive! Wonderful!

The story was interesting and well written. I liked the main character. She was a strong woman with faults that made her human. If I was in trouble I would want her to be helping me. From the beginning the story held my attention and I didn't want to put it down. I enjoyed the book and will read this next book.

Slow, crass, and boring.

Horrible. Not sure what twist the description is referring to. No surprising twist. Horrible writing. And agree with others. Odd and unnecessary preoccupation with lead character’s cold symptoms that had nothing to do with the story.

I’m not sure what al, the raving reviews are for; I was just bored and ended up skipping through it just to get to the end!

I honestly can’t recall the last time I read an entire book in one day! This book was that good! Whipping fast story with fully developed characters. I look forward to her next book in August 2018.

This book might have been a good read, but the writing is just so awkward. I love a good mystery, but I had to pull myself through this one. I have to agree with one other reviewer - why would anyone assume that anyone wants to read about someone’s cold symptoms and nose blowing?! Yuck.

Great read!

This was a great book! It was an easy road and was gripping causing it to be a page turner, finished in two days! Can’t wait till her new one comes out in August!

Excellent book! Could not put it down. A page turner to the very end! Can't wait to read more from this author!

Great read! I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading it in a day!! Can’t wait til the next book!

Interesting storyline. Unfortunately, the strange over-use of the word “mucus” has me still scratching my head.

Terrible writing... I wanted to give it a chance... but you can get better storytelling from reading a TMZ article.
