Amazing fairy-tale retelling!. The author does an amazing job at pulling you into her fairytale world. I tried to figure out how she spun the mood, but gave up to just enjoy reading the story. This is a great Victorian retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon. The trials and tribulations that Astrid has to go through to save her man are just incredible, in the best sense of the word. If you like fairytale retellings, with great, well-drawn main characters, you need to read this book! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Deeply intimate, sad, romantic, and well written.. This was deeply intimate, sad, romantic, and well written. I went on a journey with this title, one that had me hoping for their love. It reminded me of a very original take on Beauty and the Beast. Except better. I've read the original, in English and French. And this took it, and made it so much better. It added in other elements of fairytales from different areas of mythology which was woven in so well, it had me devouring each idea. There is so much originality packed in there as well, that it's just stunning. I will say, I have a hard time with a few aspects of the book. 1. Astrid's lack of belief magic isn't real doesn't *feel* real. She doesn't have a big enough reaction "magic". I feel like the story would be better served if she knew magic existed, but didn't think she had magical powers. Or if she had bigger reactions. 2. I also wanted there to be more steamy bits and more build up to the big reveal moment in part 1 (no spoilers). Because I feel like she needed to be more familiar with her surroundings, and more familiar with his body before it happened. That being said, those are small quibbles compared to the exceptional story, world building, and the romance between the two characters. Thank you for a lovely story. I hope we see more of them.
