- About Lindsay C. Gibson
If you grew up with an emotionally immature, unavailable, or selfish parent, you may have lingering feelings of anger, loneliness, betrayal, or abandonment. You may recall your childhood as a time when your emotional needs were not met, when your feelings were dismissed, or when you took on adult levels of responsibility in an effort to compensate for your parent’s behavior. These wounds can be healed, and you can move forward in your life.
In this breakthrough book, clinical psychologist Lindsay Gibson exposes the destructive nature of parents who are emotionally immature or unavailable. You will see how these parents create a sense of neglect, and discover ways to heal from the pain and confusion caused by your childhood. By freeing yourself from your parents’ emotional immaturity, you can recover your true nature, control how you react to them, and avoid disappointment. Finally, you’ll learn how to create positive, new relationships so you can build a better life.
Discover the four types of difficult parents:
• The emotional parent instills feelings of instability and anxiety
• The driven parent stays busy trying to perfect everything and everyone
• The passive parent avoids dealing with anything upsetting
• The rejecting parent is withdrawn, dismissive, and derogatory

Life changing. Giving this book time and attention put me on a healing path I had no idea I needed to endure. I even had the opportunity to share it with my mom, a big reason why I need to read the book, and she processed it about her family and grew from it as well. Wow. Angels sent you.
Amazing.. Honestly, i’ve only read a few pages and I started to tear up because of how accurate everything is. I love this book already and it’s really helping me with everything.
Good information, questionable structure. I loved the insights in this book and found the big-picture point-of-view to be a very helpful framing. The way she delineated personality characteristics often did not resonate for me and I found myself needing to take the ideas that worked for me and leave a lot of the structure behind. The latter part of the book gets into practical advise and “solutions” which I liked but also wanted to add a parenthetical frequently (this paragraph’s advice could take years to work through, don’t give up!). I still would recommend this book as a thought starter for self-reflection and reframing of our earliest and most influential relationships.
A Lifesaver. I feel like I’ve just woken up after an entire lifetime of feeling alone. It is so refreshing to have an author write a step by step guide on how to take back your life and not just reference vague ideas. Thank you!
Just buy it already!. This book managed to break my six year streak of being unable to finish a book, likely courtesy of the emotional unpacking it assists in.
Extremely helpful. Thank you! This book has been so helpful to me and my healing journey. I am so blessed to have found this book. Thank you for the time and effort you put into making this available!!!
Introspective Read. EVERYONE should read this book. Want to have your mind blown? This book is it right here.
What a find !. This book truly changed my adult life around. It really puts everything into perspective. A must read!
Enlightenment with every page.. It was a hard read only because of self identification.
Humbling. Eye opening. Comforting.. On a personal journey to heal - this book really helped me dive into how to start, validated a lot of feelings and thoughts within myself that are hard to even speak of in therapy. As I prepare for EMDR therapy I stumbled upon this title, and wil forever refer back to this as I complete trauma therapy to help imbed what to watch for in others, and myself.
Story of my life. This book is amazing! I’ve had so many issues that I’ve been fixing that don’t seem to come to an end. Once I found this book it all made sense. The author perfectly described many traits my parents have, how I’ve dealt with it and why it creates more issues for me down the line. She also provided easy and tangible ways to help you identify your parents patterns and heal from the trauma or caused. Finally I see a light at the end of the tunnel for improving my constant anxiety and worry that hinders me from living. I highly recommend this book for anyone. Even if someone doesn’t have the issues described in this book it’s also very eye opening about how other people react in different situations at work, school or anywhere else.
Life-Changing. I’ve never felt more validated from any other book! It was so refreshing to read a scientific take on emotional trauma while also figuring out how to navigate those relationships. Highly recommend!
Informative, but. I find it quite concerning that the first suggestion is to emotionally detach and set the expectation that your emotional needs will ever be fulfilled while “going through the motions” of a familial relationship.
Finished in a day. The most relevant book I’ve ever read. I feel seen and validated and ready to move on with my life.
great. Great book, made me cry a lot uncovering lots of emotional stuff from my childhood.
This book changed my life. It gave me a language for experiences that I didn’t have words for. Well written with useful examples for anyone who has a difficult relationship with one or both parents and can’t explain why.
This book changed my world view. Not only did this book show me how to deal with my own emotionally immature loved ones, it also showed me how I am emotionally immature. We pick up communication from our parents. It makes sense that you’d also pick up their emotional immaturity. I started reading this book to deal with my relationship with my parents but it ended up showing me I can be a better person myself.
Get your hands on this book now. Truly the most informative, eye opening, self-reflective book I’ve ever read. Thank you
Emotionally enlightening book. This is an emotionally enlightening book that opens an window to your unnoticed family patterns. It provides readers with a structured framework to understand their past and gives practical guidance on how to move on from it. Great book.
Beautiful.. Truly, beautiful. This has helped me in so many ways uncover the truth I’ve always known and experienced, and validate my existence and reality. Thank you.
Excellent Aid:). I’m always hesitant about self-help books. Easy solutions and blame are often key figures. This book was clear, concise and helpful. How to move on when things haven’t gone so well in the past. Excellent!
Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. This book and its instruction is changing my life. I wish I had read it years ago. Mrs. Gibson is a gifted writer, and prolific teacher who captured each quality of emotionally immature people and families without resorting to cliches or platitudes. Freeing my true self from the grip of my Mother and of all my own “ideals” was the best gift I’ve ever received. Thank you!
Sibling Stocking Stuffer. In a world where immaturity is normalized, I’m inspired by what we could be if only we woke up and broke our childhood emotional chains. Good book to read before the holidays with family.
A breath of fresh air. This book felt like it lifted a big weight off my back I didn’t know I was carrying. I like that the book uses the term ‘Emotionally Immature’ parents rather than other labels. I felt like I could relate to every sentence in this book. I kept wanting to read on as I continually felt relief as I went. Aaaaah!
This changed my life.. This book split my misbeliefs wide open until I could see my soul, again, for the first time in a decade. Thank you for this gift. I am grateful.
Redundant. Some useful info but was increasingly difficult to stay engaged as the pages flipped by. The desire to read on was held back by redundancy.
Brilliant!. This book is life changing! The information is eye-opening and it is so well written. I’ve recommended this book to several people.
Awesome Book!. There is so much good advice in the book! I enjoyed reading every chapter. My key takeaway is that, things have happened to all of us that we can’t control, but we now have the power to do things differently!
Life changing. I’ve never read a book so quickly in my life that resonated so deeply.

Althea Neale Gibson (August 25, 1927 – September 28, 2003) was an American tennis player and professional golfer, and one of the first Black athletes to cross the color line of international tennis. In 1956, she became the first African American to win a Grand Slam event (the French Championships). The following year she won both Wimbledon and the US Nationals (precursor of the US Open), then won both again in 1958 and was voted Female Athlete of the Year by the Associated Press in both years. In all, she won 11 Grand Slam tournaments: five singles titles, five doubles titles, and one mixed doubles title. "She is one of the greatest players who ever lived", said Bob Ryland, a tennis contemporary and former coach of Venus and Serena Williams. "Martina [Navratilova] couldn't touch her. I think she'd beat the Williams sisters." Gibson was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women's Sports Hall of Fame.
