From the author of Ready Player One, a rollicking alien invasion thriller that embraces and subverts science-fiction conventions as only Ernest Cline could.

Zack Lightman has never much cared for reality. He vastly prefers the countless science-fiction movies, books, and videogames he's spent his life consuming. And too often, he catches himself wishing that some fantastic, impossible, world-altering event could arrive to whisk him off on a grand spacefaring adventure.

So when he sees the flying saucer, he's sure his years of escapism have finally tipped over into madness.

Especially because the alien ship he's staring at is straight out of his favorite videogame, a flight simulator callled Armada--in which gamers just happen to be protecting Earth from alien invaders.

As impossible as it seems, what Zack's seeing is all too real. And it's just the first in a blur of revlations that will force him to question everything he thought he knew about Earth's history, its future, even his own life--and to play the hero for real, with humanity's life in the balance.

But even through the terror and exhilaration, he can't help thinking: Doesn't something about this scenario feel a little bit like...well...fiction?

At once reinventing and paying homage to science-fiction classics as only Ernest Cline can, Armada is a rollicking, surprising thriller, a coming-of-age adventure, and an alien invasion tale like nothing you've ever read before.

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. A great read! Fantastic for fans who love Ready Player One!! Wish they would make a movie!

Another Classic.. This book is as amazing as ready player one. I cannot get enough of this author!!

JacobTX

Same vein as Ready Player One. Very similar to RP1, but still entertaining nonetheless.

Bakes73

Almost Perfect..... A fantastic read that reminded me of myself, as I am sure it will others. It is a great feeling to have grow up loving "geek" culture, and been ostracized for it, to discover there are people just like me. This book is a testament to that. BUT THE ENDING... Ugh. What a let down. Predictable and too neat. But don't let that stop you from reading. It is still a truly fantastic book. Especially if you are over 40.

Titan1212

Great. Amazing read!

When’s the next one?. When’s the next book coming out?

Tigerdorsal

Not as good as ready player one. This book concluded a lot of pop culture Like the the last star fighter and Enders game in it. How ever, the books story line could be better. Ernest cline did a fine job on both of his novels. But this is certainly the second best one.

Brianq2195

Great needs a sequel. I loved it but it needs a sequel

F.x.l.

OK, but not Ready Player One. I enjoyed it for the most part, but it was not in the same category as Ready Player One. I would not bother reading it again, while I would read RPO again. The ending felt rushed, predictable, and unsatisfying.

Rscherbel

Who really wrote this?. The story was fine, but compared to Ready Player One, this was really poorly written. Everything felt rushed, almost like these were Cline’s notes instead of his finished book. Admittedly RPO was such a favorite of mine that the bar was set pretty high, but this book is not well written.

Nickplay

Too Short. This book needed another 100-150 pages to try and touch on how epic a story he was trying to tell. I liked the book but it felt so short compared to Ready Player One. I know it's unfair to compare two different books but unfortunately that's my honest opinion. It needed to be longer.

ThatStratGuy

The best was yet to come!. Ernest Cline does it again in such a fantastic follow up to Ready Player One, his first novel. Armada is gripping, a different type of story set in the great beyond of our imagination. It's a much quicker read than anticipated, and a simpler story. Mankind is threatened, and a 19year old boy and the legend of his Father are all that stands between humanity and total annihilation!

TristansHaze

Sounds like a teenager wrote it. All praise to Ernest Cline for getting published, making money, being successful, et cetera. However this book is a steaming pile of crap. It seems like a shameless love letter to everything teens liked about 20 years ago. It’s sophomoric and intellectually sterile, and I feel like I lost about 20 points of IQ by reading it. I’ve played video games with better dialogue writing. Do yourself a favor and read something else. Also, the plot is a total rip-off of Enders Game. This novel made me decide to finally write the sci-if novel I’ve been thinking of writing for the better part of 15 years - I thought “if this fool can get published, I certainly can”. It’s a pretty low bar. Oy gevalt.

Yass. A fun romp in space!

The22diver

Wow. The flashbacks of my childhood dreams never stopped. I could not stop reading this book. I read the whole thing in 36 hours.

BUY IT NOW BUY IT NOW. Ernest Cline is downright one of my favorite authors ever. I feel like I am the living embodiment of Zach (the main character), which makes this book a nerdy rollercoaster. I beg you to immediately buy and read this book with NO HESITATION. IT IS AWESOME. Thanks Mr. Cline for one of the best reading adventures I’ll have had till the end of time. -MTFBWY, Ernest Cline

The ghost of Redjive

Witty but way to shallow. I loved Ready Player One and I had high hopes for Armada. While it does start with a very promising beginning (including references to actual arcade urban legends) the story and characters of Armada feel rushed and stale. Zach, the protagonist, goes through hardly any transformation from beginning to end. The secondary characters also lack any sort of depth and their relationships with Zach feel very 1-demential (especially the love interest). The worst part is the climax and ending, both of which feel happen too fast and don't quite hit home. That being said, there are still plenty of witty references to geek-culture than any gamer/fanboy/fangirl will pick up on. I found myself chuckling out loud on numerous occasions. Final thoughts: The amusing references aren't enough to salvage this stale story.

Vpatel82

A Hybrid book. After reading this book, It kind of reminded me of Enders Game. I did enjoy this book and couldn’t put it down.

JMB09

Good ideas, not so good execution.. I recently read Ready Player One and pretty quickly fell in love with the world Ernest Cline had built. It was so much fun being able to see this advanced computer world he had constructed and I was hooked from the start. When I heard there was to be a new novel written by Mr. Cline, I was very excited about it. Having said that, I must say I did not love this novel like I did the first. There were some really good ideas executed, but in the end, they didn't mesh well or evolve in ways they should have. I also felt the characters were rather bland and they weren't explored enough. It seemed like they were there to serve a simple purpose and once the purpose was done, they were discarded. The ending also didn't really go well and it came out of left field, but not in a good way. All in all, it felt very rushed. It's an ok story that could have been more. Here's hoping the next novel is more in depth. I do look forward to more that comes from Mr. Cline.

Rufus P. McGrudie

Nostalgic Fun. An inventive story, not as original as “Ready Player One” but a good read with plenty of action.

Wildchild2644

Not bad, could have been better. I enjoyed the overall story line but the execution fell flat. I didn’t like any of the characters. They all seemed extremely immature. A lot of sentences and paragraphs seemed sloppy as if the author was in a hurry to get the book over with, much like how I felt about reading it quickly, to get it over with. Wouldn't have thought the same guy wrote RPO.

Techno Bo

Armada. I liked this book at the end of the day eh? One thing though is that it took too long to engage and hook me. too much back story upfront. I also want a huge fan of the open ended feel good storybook ending.

Wurtis1

NOT "ready player one". A big disappointment... Especially knowing how long he worked on this book, and how much fun RPO was. Armada is grade-school all the way, from its simplistic plot and premise to its ridiculously ready-for-casting characters. Come on Ernie: we know you can do better than this.

Cheese(seriously)

Great but not completely original. This story line reminds me of a combo of the last star fighter Enders game and a lot of other no name books I can't think of but I know I've read that involves video game players save the world. That besides it combines these very nicely and it's better written than many video game players save the world books. The song listed in the book are very good and are now on my top list. The last thing I want to say is this would make a good movie even better than ready player one if it follows the book better.

Abbrown

0 stars - it's just a big list. I struggled my way through this book hoping to discover the charm that infused Ready Player One and more than made up for the author's as-yet unpolished style. Sadly charm was nowhere to be found; this new book just appears to be a list of books, films and games the author enjoys, set against a teenage megalomania tale which takes irony and subtle nods so far there is nothing left of the characters or theme to enjoy. Better luck with your next novel.

Maverz

It’s ok, but nothing compared to RPO. I really enjoyed Ready Player One, but this does not compare at all. Way to many pop culture references, literally felt like he was trying to squeeze in as many as he could per sentence. Also the story just doesn’t make sense to me or seem realistic at all.

Cdog!!!!!!

soooo gooood!!!!. soooo gooood!!!!

AaplMax

Armada. A fun read...just started it today and almost done. And this evening is the BlueMoon. Seems appropriate.

ProfCartlidge

Entertaining, but weak climax. Author began with a strong development of protagonist who is relatable and you can’t help but like. The plot is somewhat believable and well-constructed. A five-star book would have offered a better climax, instead of every challenge quickly being overcome. I’d recommend it for a read, if you enjoyed Ready Player 1.

Jmack1987

Awesome!. Ernest is one of the best writers of this generation.

WardWesley

Fun Read for Kindred spirits. Ernest is good at a fanciful tale. Whereas Ready Player One reads like a screenplay, this reads a bit more like a novel. The plot hook is pretty obvious, and there is not a lot of surprises for the reader. Ernest still tends to tell, not show ... which can make the story feel a bit unpolished at times. Certainly, the book leaves itself wide open for a sequel, and I often wish the plot was not so transparent. Ernest is a storyteller with a great imagination, but he is not yet an author. I mean this respectfully. If you are enamored in 80s pop and geek culture, and enjoy a good yarn even if the telling is only passable, then I can happily recommend this book as 4 out of 5. Otherwise, from a character development and overall craft perspective, you will likely find yourself dissatisfied with a 2 out of 5. Nevertheless, I am myself a child of the 80s and a huge geek so I find in Earnest and his characters a kindred spirit.

PhilKomarny

Brill. High expectations based on RPO, slow start but got me end the end. Great premise.

DroseMVP Bulls1

Hope Cline isn't a one hit wonder.. Was this even written by the same person who wrote Ready Player One? Weak. I've read better high school fiction.

Ruppy1

Cute: but not in the same league as his first.. It isn't often these days that I read a science fiction book which is riveting, original, and intended to be complete in itself. That was "Ready Player One". When I saw that Mr. Cline had written a new novel, I was delighted. Unfortunately, while "Armada" is fun, it is not especially good or original. Full marks for lots of references to Sci Fi books and movies, but that's about all. The book is a poor shadow of Last Starfighter. It pains me to say this as I share the author's taste in books in movies.

DarkZero411

Another great story. Another great story born in the 80s smashing its way into the 20th century I love the worlds he puts me in I must have read ready player one 15 times. And I'll probably do the same for this one. I can't wait to see what he thinks Up Next. If it's a new venture going to outer-space or back to the oasis. (Maybe both) He's become one of my favorite writer. Keep up the Great work!

DigDug74

A real delight. Finaly someone who gets us old school gamers. This book really tugs at your inner child while making you feel sort of old at the same time. It was a real joy to read.

Abnersnoot

Armada fails to amass an original plot. After reading "Ready Player One" I hungrily sought out another Earnest Cline novel. A quarter of the way through the story I began to realize, "Armada" was just the second novel from a best selling author and nothing more. The plot seemed uninspired, and draw out. The '80's references were overused leftovers from his first novel, and the ending is something we have all seen before, and could probably have guessed after reading half of the book. "Armada" is not a terrible story, but it is not up to the caliber of "Ready Player One".

GB346

Brilliant!. A youthfully intellectual adventure of 80's pop culture packed into one of the coolest sci-fi stories I have ever read.

James-1776

Not as good as Ready Player One. I went into this book expecting the same great experience I got when reading Ready Player One; an immersive, compelling book that needs to be read in one sitting. Instead, I got a slow, boring book filled with forced references that just felt like trying to make lightning strike twice instead of letting it come naturally. I just hope that Ready Player Two will be better.

Woodmanwilly

Yo what if?. C-L-I-C-H-E The language and story’s plot depend on weakly written nerd references. Don’t mistake me, I loved the idea of this book, aliens vs drones, blam blam POW! But then I read it. Let’s be honest, we’ve all gone over this ‘yo what if’ scenario when call of duty was slated for the whole evening and friend #2 was refitting mom’s vase into a bong. It’s a high school kids dream scenario, dude. And yo, if this book had any tension at all maybe it could’ve held my interest, but from page one all we get is a weak character whose never really in trouble nor is truly challenged throughout. Summary: High school kid whose given everything. Aliens! Entire world at risk. blam blam pow! The end. Not riveting.

FeydRautha98

Nothing new. Basically a combination of every sci-fi idea ever conceived… trying too hard to be nostalgic. Too many convenient solutions and lack of character growth or depth. All told… disappointing.

Ripwin

Not great, just okay. Combined stories of Enders Game, Contact and The Last Starfighter. Was looking for something more with this book. I'm sure it was great if you never heard of the above titles. Seems like lazy writing to me.

JaYmZ1983

Good book for a weekend read.. I found this, as many others, by Ready Player One and its sequel. I will say that it’s a very easy read, but also lacks any real character building minus the main character. RPO is definitely a better read, but this one is better than Ready Player Two. Have fun, this book does give you that at least.

Engineer Dog

Hokey hack fest of commodified nostalgia. While "Ready Player One" stands charmingly alone as the nostalgia-drunk fluke of a clumsy but clearly focused writer, its functional sequel "Armada" proves how mind-numbingly bad things can get when we encourage pop-fi on the basis of its author's geek bona fides. By the time this novel invokes Godwin's Law on itself, you'll probably be compelled to finish despite your better judgment. You'll find a predictably heroic tale, cringe-inducing dialogue, disposable secondary characters, and a the kind of tied-with-a-bow conclusion only Hollywood could love. I gave it one extra star because of how much fun I had writing highlight notes like "OMG NO ONE CARES" and "UGGGGHHHHHH."

Sniperkleener

Armada ehh. I thought the ending could have been more thought out, it felt rushed to me.

I eat books

Another one hit wonder. Ready Player One.

Ro0steR2000

Not a bad book, just seemed to drag on. This book was okay. I only read it because the author wrote ready player one which I absolutely love and I hoped this would capture my interest as much as the ready player one but unfortunately it did not. This book seemed a little repetitive and drawn out unnecessarily.

Sasha O-K

Great read for gamers. I read this for my book club and, honestly, I had to force myself to finish it. I have never been good at video or computer games, so a lot of the book was just out of context for me. I liked the conspiracy stuff and the idea of a kid saving humanity and all that, but I have never been a "gamer", so the parts of the book that had all of the gamer lingo, I skimmed through. If I were a current gamer or had been in my life, I think I would have absolutely loved this book. It is well written and flowed well despite all of the stuff I skimmed.

Boomsticknecktie

Raid the Arcade. The book took a few chapters to finally get the story building intro out of the way. But once that was out of the way, it got a lot better. This one will make a better move than RPO will purely based on being easier to do. Great book and I look forward to any future books by Mr. Cline

Armada. Can't wait for the movie!

Lucario25

Armada is awesome.. I enjoyed reading the hardcover book. I also liked the cover of the book, and the inside of the cover is the blueprint of one of the ships in the book. I love this book, I cannot wait for the movie.

Poop'sy123

This is amazing. I have startet to read and now finish this book and just a little bit of bit picking her but the first half of the book is just his story. All thing aside I ABSOLUTELY loved this book, I love this type of genre. Its the long, fiction, good story books. I get my kicks from them. 5/5 stars would read again

Huge disappointment. Personally I think Ready Player One is one of the greatest sci fi novels in recent history. This book feels like it was written by a sophomore in a creative writing class. Self-grandizing, shallow, and full of paragraph after paragraph of analogies to better works. It took a few days to read cause I had to stop to roll my eyes every couple of pages.

TheVTech2007

Fantastic story. This is a great novel. If you are wondering if it will be as good to read as Ready Player One was, it is. He has a great writing style that I enjoy that keeps me coming back for more. Not sure how anyone could give this 3 stars or less. Maybe sci fi isn't for you?

Do_that

It's OK, not great. Armada could almost be classified as a young adult novel. The plot is fairly predictable and the characters are a little shallow. Not in the same league as Ready Player One. I finished the book in one day, as it is very fast read due to the lack of details or depth.

Melisssaolson34

Another winner!. Another fantastic novel from Ernest Cline. I'm not even a reader, but after finishing Ready Player One I simply couldn't wait for another amazing story. Once again, he has delivered. Great read!!

The Last Starfighter Was Here. You have been recruited to defend The Frontier from Xur and the Ko-Dan Armada... Forget Xur, Centauri is going to hire a copyright attorney. Luckily, after beating the Armada, Alex went to law school and became an attorney for the Frontier. Sometimes a riff goes too far...

Fireman-in-oregon

Giggitty. Giggitty goo!!

Budlights

Great but it has been done before.. So I loved the book however I felt unsatisfied. It seemed Ernest just just adapted different novels like Enders Game and Contact sprinkled on a bunch of nostalgia to write this book. It lacked originality like RPO. In his defense he does mention all the plot similarities he is adapting during the book. It was still a fun read and I will read anything the Ernest writes because it's always a feel good read and plenty of fun nerd references.

Atmobil

Decent, short read. Armada is an enjoyable read with loads of nostalgia thrown in, but not quite up to par with Ready Player One. Still, it's definitely worth the few hours you'll spend reading it.

Dr_Ellis

Amazingly entertaining. Ready Player One was recommended to me by a woman with breast cancer. That book got her through chemo. I don't have breast Cancer, but my thanks to her is this book. It is a wonderful treat, very playful. Thanks, Mr Cline, for writing it. Can't wait for your next one.

JackCab

Sounds interesting but.... It also sounds like the plot from an old sci-fi book/movie "The Last Starfighter"
