In Scarpetta, Patricia Cornwell has a character as strong as any in popular fiction" —Wall Street Journal

New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell delivers the newest engrossing thriller in her high-stakes series starring medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta.

Depraved Heart: “Void of social duty and fatally bent on mischief.”

—Mayes v. People, 806 III. 306 (1883)

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is working a suspicious death scene in Cambridge, Massachusetts when an emergency alert sounds on her phone. A video link lands in her text messages and seems to be from her computer genius niece Lucy. But how can it be? It’s clearly a surveillance film of Lucy taken almost twenty years ago.

As Scarpetta watches she begins to learn frightening secrets about her niece, whom she has loved and raised like a daughter. That film clip and then others sent soon after raise dangerous legal implications that increasingly isolate Scarpetta and leave her confused, worried, and not knowing where to turn. She doesn’t know whom she can tell—not her FBI husband Benton Wesley or her investigative partner Pete Marino. Not even Lucy.

In this new novel, Cornwell launches these unforgettable characters on an intensely psychological odyssey that includes the mysterious death of a Hollywood mogul’s daughter, aircraft wreckage on the bottom of the sea in the Bermuda Triangle, a grisly gift left in the back of a crime scene truck, and videos from the past that threaten to destroy Scarpetta’s entire world and everyone she loves. The diabolical presence behind what unfolds seems obvious—but strangely, not to the FBI. Certainly that’s the message they send when they raid Lucy’s estate and begin building a case that could send her to prison for the rest of her life.

In the latest novel in her bestselling series featuring chief medical examiner Dr. Kay Scarpetta, Cornwell will captivate readers with the shocking twists, high-wire tension, and cutting-edge forensic detail that she is famous for, proving yet again why she’s the world’s #1 bestselling crime writer.

Excellent. Her writing just gets better & better & her books get harder & harder to put down!

Enormcash

Too short.. Man, excellent intelligent book that just ends, bam. Not a good ending at all.

Peg1gy

Depraved Heart. Somebody, please stop me from ever trying to read a book by this author. Sooooo much talking and the same thing over and over. And after you wade thru that it has no firm ending. Stop me.

Save your money. Ms Cornwell is an excellent writer and in the past was a good story teller but not with this book. I slogged through the book just to see how it would end and it did not disappoint in being a terrible Scarpetta story. Dr. Scarpetta has been reduced to a frightened specimen. If she were a man, we would call her emasculated. No longer, the heroine who is strong. No longer a good mystery. Only pain and in the end lots of tears. I will read the reviews for the next ebook before purchasing. If I had purchased a hard copy, I could at least have sold it. Bad me for being so trusting of Patricia Cornwell.

Depraved Heart. Really a lousy read. Couldn't get into it.

Buffy71

Depraved Heart. Excellent book. One of her best works !!!

Depraved Heart. Excellent, sit on the edge of your seat page turner! Patricia Cornwell is in rare fashion.... I cannot wait for the next sequel. Please, don't make me wIt too long.

Dingaling365

Awfully Close to Non-Fiction. It was rather disturbing how close the author got to real life events these days. Reading it caused knots in my stomach. Government conspiracy, collusion, covert operations. You got some closure in the end, but not enough. Guess there is another novel after this one to read.

Fond memories of many years past.... I yearn for the Scarpetta from the days of Post Mortem and with every book I've bought in the last 12-13 years, I've kept the hope alive you will become the author I fell in love with. When the author that you loved so very much no longer has her heroine do a single autopsy, and the entire book occurs in one day, is when I sadly say goodbye. ☹️

I hated this book

Depraved Heart. I will give this book one star because I didn’t give up on it when it entered the “stupidest” territory. It didn’t resolve anything. I would not recommend this book.

Andysgrl

Another bad one. The last book in the Scarpetta series I read was The Last precinct. I've tried reading every book in the series since and could not bring myself to finish any of them (borrowed from the library or friends, I would not pay for them!) Lucy became an insufferable multimillionaire superhero and the rest of the characters and plot lines too ridiculous and/or boring. I mourn for the loss of the great books that introduced me to the thriller genre. I thank Cornwell for her earlier works but clearly her heart isn't in this anymore. Pity.

Mistyc40

Killer read!. I absolutely could NOT put it down! I've always been a Scarpetta fan, but this one held me right up to the finish. I can't wait until the next one!

Shirl the squirrel

Depraved Heart. One of the best Kay Scarpetta books!

Pointaken

Another great Scarpetta story. Will not disappoint!

Gratefulsteed

Depraved Heart. The Scarpetta series are always good to read. I enjoy that the stories are built around real science. This one was a bit predictable in the end but still glad I read it.

StuddyMuffen

Depraved Heart. Too analytical, slow, and dud of an ending. Not the usual Kay Scarpetta thriller.

Sherrie Apple

Underwhelmed. I think this is the first book where the ME (Scarpitta) doesn’t actually do a single autopsy. Used to love the Scarpetta novels. Now I’m jaded. Probably won’t buy the next.

Kenmarelisa

Worst Scarpetta book written!. I have read everything that has been written by this author and patiently wait for her new books, but am now doubting her skills. This book is a horrible never ending "ground hog day"! Boring, boring, boring! Has the author gotten so cocky that she believes she can write garbage and fans will stand for it? Don't waste your money on this book, so disappointing!

Grannycha

Depraved Heart. I guess this is my least favorite of all Patricia’s books. So much repetition that I wondered if I had put my bookmark in the wrong place. Sorry Dr. Kay, Benton, Pete and Lucy.

703 Sue

Very disappointing. After reading all of the Scarpetta series, this was very short, inconclusive, and unoriginal. Think I'm done as a fan, with the short length the plot was also underdeveloped for one of the series. Don' pay money for this one, wait for the library!

3805JB

TERRIBLE. I really, really tried to read it but couldn't. The first 30 pages and have no idea what it is about.

Mej208

Depraved Heart. Very hard to "attached" ugh, I usually love this author

1Stupid Person

Depraved Heart. I have always enjoyed Ms. Cornwell's novels - especially the Scarpetta ones. This one seems hastily written without much thought given to the plot or story line. One of the most boring books I've read! The ending was terrible - like the author just decided to quit writing! What a waste of money!

WLC/WLC

Not up to Scarpeta par. Not as good as her other novels. Seem like she is writing just to be writing. Not really a good read at all.

Shugckb9

Page turner. I really enjoyed this one ! Fast moving, suspenseful, kept me turning pages ! A must for Cornwell fans !

E-wrecks

Russell. This is the worst offering in the series. The early works like Body Farm were engrossing and had a beginning, middle and an end. This one seems to have been an unedited manuscript that ran too long and just got chopped off to meet the deadline for holiday release. Maybe the author should follow Patterson and others who an outline to supply an outline and let someone flesh out the work. If this was a Resturant offering, I would send it back.

Mjp1952

Interesting!. Some new twists and turns. Hope this is a series as this left me feeling there is more.

M. Kleshick

Depraved Heart. Sometimes I read reviews. But even after reading them I will still buy the book because we all have an opinion, right? For the first time I am actually taking advice from a viewer. I will get this book from the library. To the dedicated as I am followers of the Scarpetta novels, thank you for your advice. 🙃

Imustbcrazytoplaythisgame

Boring. Too much fluff being repeated over and over. I skipped over many page. Not the usual excitement. Just a tad bit sorry I spent money on this book.

Aghsj

Depraved Heart. Could not wait to read this latest book in this series. It was wonderful. I highly recommend it.

KimWB

Depraved heart. It's like she started writing (expensive) novellas. There is no ending, no closure....just buy the next book! Lucy has become a harsh one dimensional robot, and the dialog from everyone is stilted. Cornwall tries to justify by making her characters scared and doubting each other. Chapter upon chapter of frigid, unattached characters...that have a picnic dinner at the end. There is no effort to engage...I felt the main characters have become so tiresome, redundant and predictable that I no longer cRe WHAT happens to them. At least if Carrie killed one of them there might be some well written interaction between the other characters.

JustdandyNJ

Depraved Heart. If you are a Kay Scarpetta fan, this book does not disappoint. Although there is a better sense of continuity if the books in the Scarpetta series are read in order, fans of forensic novels and medical mysteries will enjoy reading any book in the series, in any order. Read in order, each novel builds on the next, as each character develops. Readers are introduced to each character, and then throughout the series readers experience family bonds, friendships, growing-up, challenges, mystery, and sometimes surprise. The villains are usually different in each book, although many have ties to previous psychopaths, and a few appear multiple times. There are a variety of elements to every book, and most all include forensics, criminal profiling, technology, FBI, law enforcement, and the workings of a medical examiner, (just to name a few.) The medical and forensic terminologies used are accurate, but not distracting from the storyline because they are clearly explained and not difficult to understand. After I read the first book in the series in less than a day, I found I wanted to read the next. By about the tenth book, I had read all that had been written to date, and anxiously anticipated the next book being published. I would read the book cover to cover in less than a day, and then the waiting started again. No matter how hard I tried, it is nearly impossible to not want to read “just one more chapter.”

Knightsbane

Depraved Heart. Well written with a "need" to keep reading. Would like to have those characters around Kay have their back stories written more fully. The reader is only able to see/ follow Kay. There's interaction but not really depth of other characters.

Isu2015

Depraved heart. Not up to par with other books. Boring not worth the price

Underdog is here

Very disappointing. Like others have said, I've read the entire series. And, until this book, I've thoroughly enjoyed them. This book was hard to stay interested in. Seemed like it was written in the same time frame it took place in- 1 day.

Xyzygy

Depraved Heart. I'v read all the Scarpetta books. This is the worst. Simply awful!!

Mike78685

I did not like it. Patricia Cornwell is an excellent writer. However, I did not like this story which is too bad since I love her earlier works.

Xraygrrrl

This series has gone stale. I am a fan of Scarpetta from day one. However, this series has become tedious and the characters aren't like able. Sadly disappointed in one of my favorite authors. I am done with this series. It's no longer interesting, exciting, suspenseful or engaging.

Shihtzu5

Depraved Heart. Manic, repetitive read. Far from her best.
