“Lauren Groff is a writer of rare gifts, and Fates and Furies is an unabashedly ambitious novel that delivers – with comedy, tragedy, well-deployed erudition and unmistakable glimmers of brilliance throughout.” —The New York Times Book Review (cover review)
From the award-winning, New York Times-bestselling author of Florida, Matrix, and the highly-anticipated The Vaster Wilds: an exhilarating novel about marriage, creativity, art, and perception.
Fates and Furies is a literary masterpiece that defies expectation. A dazzling examination of a marriage, it is also a portrait of creative partnership written by one of the best writers of her generation.
Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its secrets. At the core of this rich, expansive, layered novel, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years.
At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. With stunning revelations and multiple threads, and in prose that is vibrantly alive and original, Groff delivers a deeply satisfying novel about love, art, creativity, and power that is unlike anything that has come before it. Profound, surprising, propulsive, and emotionally riveting, it stirs both the mind and the heart.

Gorgeous. This was one of the better reading experiences I’ve had. Nothing trite, formulaic or boring about it. The story told from perspectives of different people and times lent depth and beauty I didn’t expect. So sad when it ended.
I miss it already.... Original. Vibrant. Captivating. I want more!!
Wow. Beautiful, painful, wonderful, intricate...There are many of us who feel like we are Mathilde... Our husbands, friends and family think they know us, but do they really? Some things are better left a secret.
Brilliant. Just brilliant.. This book was one chosen by our book club host. I recall wondering if it was going to be just another random novel about love and lust, while also wondering how I tell our group that I just could not get into it. Lesson learned, don't judge a book after reading the first paragraph. After I began reading, I then wondered why it felt like the author was speeding through the story. Alas, it was I. So thoroughly engrossed in the book that I was found myself reading so very quickly. Alas, brilliant read from beginning to end.
Over-hyped. The book reads like the thesis of a double major in lit and creative writing. Groff relies heavily on other works for both content and style. Classical works and Shakespeare show up a lot as well as direct and indirect references to authors like Melville and Nabokov. The beginning of Mathilde’s life is basically an alternative version of ‘A Separate Peace.” Groff's words are pretty but empty… she is clearly far better at recognizing beautiful language than wielding it. Ultimately, the ideas in this book are not nearly as profound as her language would suggest.
Amazing. Wow
Fates and Furies. Strange story told in a nonlinear fashion. None of the characters are particularly nice people which, I suppose makes the plot interesting in a disappointing way. Not a book to read if one is depressed. It will only reinforce that feeling.
Confusing. I really enjoyed the story line but felt like it never dug deep enough into any of the many sub story lines to get hooked. The prose is confusing. I wanted to like this book but struggled to connect with it and what really took place between Matilde, Lotto, Chollie and their past lives.
Sumptuous perfection. An enjoyment that left me breathless and inspired, haunted and fuller for having read it.
So Enjoyed!. I had downloaded this book long enough ago that I hadn't remembered what it was about when I began reading. The first two pages threw me when I felt like I had stumbled into some steamy romance novel. Then I thought some of the vocabulary seemed precious. Then I thought I could see where the the plot lines were heading. Wrong, wrong, and wrong again. I thoroughly enjoyed this surprising, beautifully written, and entertaining book. I couldn't put it down and finished it in two days; both eager to see where it was going and so sad to see it end.
Different. A strange book with unusual literary devices. Fun to read, compelling, exciting, fast moving. I will not long forget it.
Too much sex. It was almost the focal point of the book, rather than the relationships between characters.
Fates and Furies. What a terrific story!
Magnificent. I'll wait (im)patiently for Lauren Groff's next page-turner, where I learn a new word on almost every page!! Brilliant. (Duh)
Gorgeous. Love the subtleness of the twists and turns. The writing is superb and left me feeling like I was reading a haunting dream. Couldn't put it down.
Fates and Furies. Absolutely wonderful! Only regret is that I could not dog ear pages that needed repeated reading of language so precise, beautiful and sometimes harrowing. Oh what I miss out on when reading on an IPad.
Didn't love it didn't hate it.... I feel like the reviews are either loved it or hated it. I wanted to love it and I'll probably try to read Arcadia to see if it suits me better. She is obviously a great writer but I couldn't connect 100% with this book. I felt like there were loose ends that didn't get tied together and found it easy to get lost and need to reread parts. It's worth a try to see if it works for you.
Fates and Furies. Nearly impossible to put down. Complex, often surprising, redeeming. Loved it.
Awesome and brilliant. Just when you think you know this couple and the people who surround them, the second half of the book starts. I loved it! Thank you Barack Obama for recommending it!
Fates and Furies. Excellent read.......along the lines of Wally Lamb. This is the first of his I have read, but once in, I could hardly climb out.
Not perfect, but overall magnificent. I almost quit after a few pages: the precious style, the romance-novel sex, the unconnected nature of the writing. But after a while I was hooked, and from then on I couldn't put it down. What fascinating characters and situations! While I was shocked at the revelations in Part II, I'm still thinking about what made Mathilde the way she was. What made her do the evil deed to her baby brother? Something innate, or learned? Was wondering how the book would end, and think Groff found a good way by way of an action of grace towards Chollie. Finally, Mathilde was "redeemed" and broke out of the awful two-dimensional mold. Also loved the opera angle in the middle, as well as the turning point set as a play. Wonderful read!
Painful. Had to force myself to keep reading ..
Fate and Furies. This is an excellent read. This is not an easy read but a deep thoughtful reflection on a relationship from two different perspectives. The characters are complex. You feel their sadness and their happiness due to the great character development. It is not a romance novel
Gobsmacked. I found the whole concept of this book alluring and addictive. I think the book owned me for the two days I took to read it. I could not put this book down. Tragic, funny, captivating and so much more. I guarantee you will want to read this impressive novel. Bravo to Lauren Groff.
Brilliant. Nuff said.
Enthralling, Tragic, and Beautifully Written. Seldom do I take the time to write these, even for books I enjoy, but this one definitely deserved it. Groff manages to turn the often overlooked ideal of marriage and transform it into something that borders epic, drawing parallels to some of the greatest Greek tragedies (of which Groff is a contemporary if there ever was one). Lotto and Mathilde's marriage is so ordinary, and this very idea is what makes it and them so inherently exceptional and fascinating. If this wasn't enough already, Groff interweaves two very different perspectives that share both tragic paradoxes and nuanced similarities that paint a hauntingly realistic image of the institution that is typically romanticized or condemned. All this combined with a unique prose that rivals that of Fitzgerald or Hemingway, Fates and Furies is a novel that will have you flip back the the first page after finishing the last.
Deep, Thought-provoking, and Fresh. I started with the sample and immediately purchased this book with no hesitation. I finished it this morning and was sad to put it down. The story told here is an intelligent one one dipped in beautiful sorrow that speaks to the parts of us we don't often think about. Be prepared to not want to put this down until you've lapped up every word. The timeline the story follows is delightful and provoking and will take some turns you do not expect. I'm looking forward to the next Laura Groff novel. To all the negative reviews: Humph! Maybe try a Nicholas Sparks novel if you're looking for "fluff".
Fates and Furies. Outstanding. Wow.
Blah. Characters either weren't developed well or it's just such a boring book. I get very excited to come home after a long day and read. This poor book made me want to download some games on my phone. Couldn't even finish it.
Yes!. So lush, so filled with life are her characters! I desperately wanted to see them in this tale of love and despair...so real, so tragic...I did not want this to end! Movie please!!
Lush, Brilliant and Full of Distortion. Reading this book is like dipping your face through the smooth calm surface of a mirror, and having the reflection on the other side reveal an undercurrent of distortion—slithering beneath a one-sided perspective—basically the bones that have been keeping the initial façade afloat. The descriptions are eloquent and original, adding to the voyeristic feeling the reader gets as if peeling back the layer of skin and seeing more that we were supposed to. An interesting take on marriage, fedelity, narcissim, deceit and grief. There are always two sides to every story.
Lush and surprising.. Elegant character development in first half is turned upside down in the secondary made all the more engaging.
Hard read. If it takes 250 pages for a story to get a bit interesting, then there is something wrong there. I only had to force myself to go on because this was a book club choice. The first 200 pages was like a torture or a bad homework. The second half was only a LITTLE interesting. I didn't see any worthy issue or new point raised in this whole story for our minds to ponder on. No content worthy of discussion. ☹️
Fates and Furies. Perhaps I am not sophisticated or smart enough to appreciate this book because I found it to be incredibly confusing. Yet I knew I had to finish it, and I still do not know why! I have studied English and earned two and one half degrees.....but this work eluded me.
Like reading 2 separate novels.. Devastating and brilliant
