First book in the USA Today bestselling Victorian San Francisco Mystery series.

It's the summer of 1879, and Annie Fuller, a young San Francisco widow, is in trouble. Annie's husband squandered her fortune before committing suicide five years earlier, and one of his creditors is now threatening to take the boardinghouse she owns to pay off a debt.

Annie Fuller also possesses a secret. She supplements her income by giving domestic and business advice as Madam Sibyl, one of San Francisco's most exclusive clairvoyants, and one of Madam Sibyl's clients, Matthew Voss, has died. The police believe his death was suicide brought upon by bankruptcy, but Annie believes Voss has been murdered and that his assets have been stolen.

Nate Dawson wrestles with a difficult decision. As the Voss family lawyer, he would love to prove that Matthew Voss didn't leave his grieving family destitute. But that would mean working with Annie Fuller, a woman who alternatively attracts and infuriates him as she shatters every notion he ever had of proper ladylike behavior.

Sparks fly as Anne and Nate pursue the truth about the murder of Matthew Voss in this light-hearted, cozy historical mystery set in the foggy, gas-lit world of Victorian San Francisco.

Great Story and Characters. First time reading this author. Kudos to Mrs. Locke. I think the characters are well developed and the story lines are great. I felt I was right there with Annie in this time period. I love historical-type mysteries This is a great piece of literature. I do plan to read the next book Uneasy Spirits to continue on my adventure with Annie and Mr. Dawson. :)..

Victorian Mystery

Step Back in Time. Caught up in the characters as they solve the mystery, the era and setting of the story unfold for the reader with just the right amount of detail to bring realism to it without slowing the pace. The author does an excellent job of giving the reader a feel for San Francisco in the late 1800's, especially for a young, single woman with good business sense at a time her opportunities were limited but her spirit was undaunted.

Excellent!!!. A fantastic mystery. As much as I tried, I never totally figured out the ending. The book comes alive and is a true page turner. The San Francisco Victorian history is a bonus. It is truly interesting. This is a series to read!

Loved it!. Maids of Misfortune by M. Louisa Locke was the first book I read in this series. I can honestly say that I fell in love with Annie's character right away and then with all the rest! Nate, Annie's borders and her staff were all lovely characters! Ms. Locke's description of San Francisco in the late 1800 was such a treat. I recommended the books to my sister and she enjoyed reading them as much as I did!!! I highly recommend this series!!

CaKris

Well planned and executed. This novel is packed full of many delightful characters, a strong storyline and is evenly paced. There is appropriate humor, heart warming respect and prolonged mild suspense. A feel good novel. A cosy to wile away a weekend. Bought the series based on this first book.

Blackkataz

Great Book!!!. I love reading books where the lead character is female & think book is one of the best!! A strong woman, standing on her own, in the Victorian Age. Great idea!!

Maids of Misfortune. A great story of a young single woman in nineteenth century San Francisco, and murder. Couldn't wait to read the next one!

Hitechkat

Interesting book. Historical novel that sheds light on how much things have changed in society. Good read.

Unfortunately Maids. Shows that no maid, however fortunate, ever made a living wage. These women are tough cookies. Smart, inventive, and most of the upper crust women try the best they know how too take care of those around them — insert vast amounts of wit. Only 4/5 because of the gentlemen. They do need some help from their “hunks”, but when the hunk tries the same help over and over, who can blame a gal (Lady) when she blows up?

Steve Rogers 1978ii

Engaging and Descriptive. I normally read SciFi and Fantasy, but this Historical Fiction novel kept me reading chapter after chapter. The characters and situations are engaging, and the descriptions of what life was like in the late 1800s San Francisco is interesting. Already on the third book in the series.

Turn the tables. A new perspective on history. A great read

Maids of Misfortune. Just finished reading Maids of Misfortune and looking forward to starting Uneasy Spirits. I have always enjoyed historical books, especially those that include actual facts that represent the era they were written about. I also enjoy books with strong female characters who are intelligent and headstrong.

Ann not Annie

Everything was good, except.... I enjoyed reading this mystery. I found the story moved along and the setting and characters were interesting. The reason I gave it only 4 star was that the circumstances surrounding the murderer's actions were kind of flimsy. The coincidence with the bag, really? Would I read another one by this author, probably.

Chickens, Mules

Maids of Misfortune. I really enjoyed this book. There aren't a lot of stories involving independently acting, smart, outspoken and strong willed women of the late 1800's. The heroine of this story is all of these and is very likable. The book is entertaining and provides insight into the period, how women were perceived and choices made about how to be in that world. Well done.

Aids of missfortune. I truly enjoyed this book! I thought it was a little longer than it needed to be. I also loved that it was a stand a lone. History, mystery, and romance! My favorite ingredients for a good read. Loved it!

Maids of misfortune. Interesting plot with realistic characters. Thanks, g

Piece of fun

Great start to a series. The characters were well established leaving me with a desire to continue following their life journey through the rest of the series. Enjoyed the book!

Avid Reader QC

A fine, clever book. This is a very fine, clever book. Except for ignoring the fact that no one on a warm San Francisco August morning would expect anything except a cool windy afternoon, the author did an excellent job with the facts of Victorian San Francisco.

Rapid ronny

Maids of Misfortune. Mildly interesting

Mcv50

San Francisco delight. A wonderful story of San Francisco in the early years. Great characters and intriguing plot including twists and turn throughout. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Bubbling Barb

Maids of Misfortune. I was truly impressed with this Victorian Mystery. It opened my eyes to life in San Francisco in the 1800s. Belonging to one class was quite an educational experience. Women were only supposed to perform certain tasks. But the main character uses this opportunity to find the culprit and bring him to justice.

RRengaV

Maids of misfortune. Excellent and gripping book. Brought San Francisco of late 1800s in front of you. I could imagine horse carriages moving about San Francisco hills instead of cable cars. Great writing and I loved it.

Bevpixelviehe

Very well written!. I truly enjoyed Maids of Misfortune. Both the storyline and the characters were well-developed. I look forward to reading Ms. Locke's other writings.

Ralphnun1

Maids of Misfortune. Such a great story!!! Great mystery.

Jmhtdc22

Maids of Misfortune. I found the book to quite suspenseful and engaging as the writer draws you into the mystery as to who the murderer(s) might be. I also enjoyed the way the characters were developed and each held his or her own secrets. The elaborate use of languages was exciting and helped to keep the book true to the historical time period.

Leanne Angela

Maids of misfortune. Such a delightful and suspenseful book at the same time!!! Cannot wait to read more!!!!

Rush61

Actually.... I started to stop reading when I found the main character playing dress-up as a clairvoyant- I don't believe in such hooey- I gave the obligatory eye roll and then realized this was the only book left in my library that I hadn't read. I was stuck with it so I kept reading I'm certainly glad I did. I found it quite entertaining and well written. (And, hallelujah- it was not plagued with poor grammar and a million spelling errors) I liked the main character a lot - she's brave and smart and kind. The other characters were well rounded out and interesting. Best part of all is that I didn't have the mystery figured out by page five! Ms. Locke knows how to twist and turn a story well. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and look forward to more of her work.

Shufie

Maid of Misfortune. Enjoyed the book. Easy reading.

VikingReader

Good Fun. Enjoyed this book. Kept me interested throughout. Good story and lots of interesting 'scenery' and period specific detail.

Mary Ward Taylor

Interesting. In an era of underestimating the intelligence and business acumen of women, the protagonist finds a clever way to dispense her wise advice, but gets caught up in a murder mystery.

Padmajoy

Maids of Misfortune. Engrossing and fast paced story. Rapid pace held my interest. I found the aliases confusing at times. I liked the female main character and her willful personality. I enjoyed her feminist perspective. And the depiction of women at the turn of the 20th century. I’d like to read more my this author.

Scarysarah65

A great holiday read. I really enjoyed reading about this feisty independent woman doing things her way in the repressed late 19th Century. There was suspense, humour and good old fashioned values! Can't wait to get the next one Sarah - South Australia
