- The Nightingale5 star

A heart-wrenching story portrayed beautifully by the author. It takes a most depraved era in history and shows it’s ugliness and beauty co-existing. Well worth investing the time to read; Kristin Hannah champions the human spirit in the face of great adversity. The Nightingale is a must read!

- The Nightingale5 star

This book was a bit of a slow burn at first, and the characters seemed a little artificial. But the author clearly had a method to her madness, as by the time I got just a bit further in—not the book—the STORY—everyone and everything began to come to life and with such force I was rivetted. I could not put the story down or ever forget these luminous, very real people or their horrendous experience of WW2 France. Most of all, they proved what we want and need in our lives. That love must triumph over hate for our civilization to not only survive, but thrive. This is a compellingly inspired story, and I believe one of the most important ones to read for everyone.

It’s a heartbreaking story that opened my eyes to so many of the hardships endured during that dark time. Even through the sadness I couldn’t stop reading, I needed to know what happened. The writing is excellent. This book will make you feel deeply. If you can handle a heavy read, I highly recommend this one.

When I first picked this book up, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The first few pages didn’t quite grab my attention, so my hopes for it weren’t high. But was I wrong!! This book has every emotion and demonstrates the resilience women have. I can’t recommend this book enough. Please give it a shot, and you will not be disappointed. I cried for the last hour or more while I finished the book. Inspirational to say the least.

- Magnificent5 star

I read a lot of historical fiction from this era, and consider myself to have discerning taste for the genre. This was simply magnificent. I cried a few times, and books don’t usually make me cry. There are some moments in this book that are so completely and uniquely human and that both break your heart and pull it back together. The characters are among some of the most complex I’ve read. I just can’t say enough good things about this beautiful book.

I keep looking for another book as good as this one. An exciting, amazing story. I think it changed me. I am a very critical reader too. I doubt the author will ever be able to top this one. I have bought this book for others too who have told me they loved it.

Mafawe - The Nightingale5 star

A real page turner. Although historically accurate, it is a very emotional and heart wrenching read. It makes you think of what is important in life; not material things, but love in its many forms and how valuable it is to tell those you cherish just how much you do love them. It's a story of survival and how the human psyche can keep us going despite unbearable cruelty and immense tragedy. Well written and certainly worth the read.

A question. Isabel was selfish and defiant as are many teenagers, but what was so powerful a catalyst that she would become involved in the dangerous underground? To impress a lover does not seem enough.

I lay here having finished the book and I am in tears. I have always read these kinds of books but this book has opened my eyes so much more to what all the people of the war suffered. Those who left to fight, those left behind to raise families alone and lives lost at the camps. This story made it feel so real. Their pain, their love, their need to fight for survival at all costs. What a beautiful story.

Jayline87 - Amazing Book!5 star

I would recommend this book to anyone, I loved it. It’s a powerful book that is wonderfully written. Beautiful characters, I loved the relationships between them, some that were established and some that changed and grew over the story. And I loved the glimpse into the present day, which was sadly not the outcome I expected. I’ve read a lot of WWII fiction, this is one of my favorites. It’s hard to imagine what people went through and what you would have done had you been in their situation. I would like to this I would follow the example set by Isabelle or Vianne.

Cahello - Historical soap opera?3 star

I’m not a book snob by any means, but this was more similar to a soap opera than a good historical fiction, which I thought I was getting into. It’s entertaining to some degree, but some of the details don’t line up with the era the book took place in and it has a lot of cliches.

Ok, first off ‘woah’. 🤭🤭 This book is absolutely riveting. The author illustrates the series of events into a web of cunning, passion, fear, and the sheer perseverance of the characters in the book. Just a quick note, it takes about 100 or so pages to really get you hooked. So give it some time, and pretty soon you will be unable to put it down! 😅 I loved this book and highly recommend it to EVERYONE. Even if historical books aren’t your forte, this is still an amazing, amazing story! And one more thing to note; get your tissues out, because you are going to cry!!

MJW6506 - A page turner!4 star

Despite having been pummeled by bombs and seeing limbs blown off her fellow French neighbors, Isabelle is nevertheless defiant in the face of the Nazis. It doesn’t seem plausible that someone would so openly defy the Nazi’s authority, who at that point in the book had made clear their violent tendencies. I found her character highly irritating, in that she would put so many lives at risk, including her own, just to scowl at a Nazi. It frayed my nerves and annoyed me no end and just did not seem very plausible for a story. I was relieved when she finally left her family alone, and certainly much less annoyed with her antics, heroic though they may be. HOWEVER, it was a page-turner of a book and I found myself longing to get back to it every time I had to put it down to pay attention to real life. So while it may have started off as a bit of a hokey story, the weight of it slowly took on more and more gravity and I was absolutely hooked! Go Nightingale! I was in tears by the end. This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I am definitely picking up her next one. Well done!

The Nightingale is a great representation of women in the war and the sacrifices and hardship that they endured. It tells the unspoken and imaginable bravery of women in WW2, through the two sisters. One of my favorite things is reading a line in a book that makes me pause. I read it again...let the words fill my mind silently. Then I read it aloud, and allow the words to roll off my tongue. Then again; faster, slower, in a new rhythm. That’s when I know I have found literature gold. The Nightingale, by Kristin Hannah, is one such book of gold. ✨ Initially, I read this novel because I heard it was comparable to All the Light we Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. (Which I LOVE) While it did have similarities with the theme of German Occupied France during WWll it had its own very unique story line to tell... This book was a masterpiece. Kristin Hannah delivered a novel with rich language, imagery, and complex multidimensional characters. I couldn’t get enough of this story and it stuck with me long after I had finished reading. I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys the beauty of literature. It’s a story of love, hope, and history. It reminds you of the tragedy that so many people endured during WWll, as well as the endurance of the human spirit and what can develop when people refuse to give in to circumstances deemed bigger than themselves. I wish I could grant it more than five stars. This book is historical fiction at its best. Check out my Instagram book review page for awesome book reflections: @me.myshelf.and.i

“In love, we find out who we want to be; in war we found out who we are.” This is a story of Occupied France in the time of WW2. It is focused on the Rossingol sisters: Vianne and Isabelle, abandoned before the war by their father they grew up in orphanges and schools until one marries and the other is dismissed from every school she is in. Seemingly total opposites, they end up crossing paths and affecting each other’s lives in the way only war can. One becomes a leader in the resistance movement. The other loses her husband to a POW camp and quietly changes lives in her own small town. Vianne explains that for her, it was a “shadow war” and those left behind did what they could to survive while women like Isabelle/Juliette were more active and paid the ultimate price. “Men tell stories. Women get on with it” she explains to her youngest, himself older and a doctor, asking about the aunt he barely knew existed. They had no idea what they accomplished. As a reviewer, I was literally glued to this depressingly hopeful story of survival at any cost during the horrors of terrible atrocities. As Americans, we heard in school of the holocaust that Germany waged on the world. However, we didn’t hear of those left behind-much. I've stood in Sachsenhausen Camp in Germany. I’ve seen pictures and heard stories here in Upstate NY where the only refugee Jews were taken in not 60 miles from here. I am old enough to have college roommates request another room because of my German heritage. Occupied France wasn’t part of what I knew about. Thanks to Kristin Hannah, I now have a better view. This book will make you cry, will give you strange unsettled dreams, and affect you in unusual ways. I highly recommend it and I will eagerly wait for the movie reportedly in the works. 5/5 [disclaimer: I received this book in a GoodReads giveaway and voluntarily chose to review it]
