eat1465 - Amazing
Beautifully written. The best book I have read in years.
Nic Ellen - Best book I’ve ever read
This is the best book I have ever read and I’m so excited to see it being turned into a movie! I love reading stories that relate to history. I cried at least a couple times.
Why did I buy without trying? - The Nightengale
It is rare that I become emotional when reading a novel. At the end of this one, I wept. A story that moves its reader to tears is a good one, indeed.
Kim Guined - Amazing!!
Simply amazing read... I love this story so so much.
Mo6798 - Could not put this down.
One of the best novels I’ve ever read. Simply amazing.
- aw - - A Bittersweet Masterpiece
I just finished reading this story and I cannot stop thinking about it. From the beginning, I was completely drawn in by this story. The characters were so motivated as they showed what true courage, determination, and sacrifice looks like in the face of such destruction. From now on I will see war, love, and peace in a way I never have before. I will never forget this story.
LJB_11 - I was left speechless...
Hands down one of the best books I’ve ever read. It was beautifully written and captivating until the last sentence.
bookreviewer105 - Incredible
This was by far the best book I have ever read. From the story lines, the characters, the history, the sadness, the love, the heroism and bravery, everything. I will truly be touched by this book for a long time, if not, forever. I look forward to reading more of Hannah’s books. 10000/10
nebucadnazzar - The Nightingale
A heart-wrenching story portrayed beautifully by the author. It takes a most depraved era in history and shows it’s ugliness and beauty co-existing. Well worth investing the time to read; Kristin Hannah champions the human spirit in the face of great adversity. The Nightingale is a must read!
as6036292623 - The Nightingale
This book was a bit of a slow burn at first, and the characters seemed a little artificial.
But the author clearly had a method to her madness, as by the time I got just a bit further in—not the book—the STORY—everyone and everything began to come to life and with such force I was rivetted. I could not put the story down or ever forget these luminous, very real people or their horrendous experience of WW2 France. Most of all, they proved what we want and need in our lives. That love must triumph over hate for our civilization to not only survive, but thrive.
This is a compellingly inspired story, and I believe one of the most important ones to read for everyone.
Iriselora - The Nightingale
I am 66 years old and have been an avid reader since I was a girl. I’m pretty sure this is the best book I’ve ever read!

lorig727 - A Historical Fiction Lover’s Dream Come True

mariesh2014 - One of the best stories I’ve ever read
I finished this book over a month ago and the characters are still living in my head. I think about it often. It’s a heartbreaking story that opened my eyes to so many of the hardships endured during that dark time. Even through the sadness I couldn’t stop reading, I needed to know what happened. The writing is excellent. This book will make you feel deeply. If you can handle a heavy read, I highly recommend this one.
Partyzonee - Couldn’t stop reading
Loved this book. I could not stop reading it, such a fantastic story of two sisters and the different experiences of how they endured during the war. Truly amazing to read the suffering people lived through during that time period.
SmileyK4 - Griping and Moving
Beautiful story of heroism. Highly recommend!!!
Patricia BK - Good read.
This was such a good book. It is appalling to read of the atrocities that was endured, but so important to learn.
Basch. - Not an immersive reading experience
Not a fan of the prose or storytelling technique(s). The premise is interesting enough, but I found myself reluctantly trudging through each page to reach the ending.
ShradTi - What a book!!! Wow!
This book is an amazing read and what a page turner.!!! I finished reading it in less than a week. I cried couple times while reading it as well.. I would highly recommend it for someone looking to read a heartfelt transforming book.

This book really is a good one. I recommend it to anyone who likes historical fiction with some sappiness mixed in.
Beryl67 - Poignant
Could not put down.
Turtleneck girl - Such a raw, emotional story
When I first picked this book up, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The first few pages didn’t quite grab my attention, so my hopes for it weren’t high. But was I wrong!! This book has every emotion and demonstrates the resilience women have. I can’t recommend this book enough. Please give it a shot, and you will not be disappointed. I cried for the last hour or more while I finished the book. Inspirational to say the least.
Lieutenant Cat M. - Magnificent
I read a lot of historical fiction from this era, and consider myself to have discerning taste for the genre. This was simply magnificent. I cried a few times, and books don’t usually make me cry. There are some moments in this book that are so completely and uniquely human and that both break your heart and pull it back together. The characters are among some of the most complex I’ve read. I just can’t say enough good things about this beautiful book.
aai12 - My favorite book
This was the most incredible, well-written story. I recommend it to anyone and everyone. Those that have taken my recommendation always end up gushing over the book as well.
Kbeyer7211 - OMG!!!
Just when I thought I wasn’t going to tear up again, I did! Amazing story about amazing women! Thank you for writing this.
Msweiss5 - Wonderful!
Amazing! A must read!
Alessia1129 - Moving and inspirational!
Amazing story of two powerful women in terrible times. The character development, writing and everything about this book is everythinggggg. Highly recommend! As a person who hated history in school, I learned so much about history as I read this book.
gostd002 - Phenomenal. Moving.
What a breathtaking representation of the French occupation and two wonderfully complex sisters doing their best to get through one of the darkest parts of the worlds history. What a remarkable story, I can’t recommend it enough.
kkahern - Outstanding!
Hannah really delivers with The Nightingale - thoughtful, provocative, suspenseful, heart-warming, courageous. I couldn’t put it down. Thank you, Kristin for doing your research and making this such an enveloping and educational read. I have a whole new respect for women during WWII thanks to your book.
Kiki088 - My favorite book of all times
Jayline87 - Amazing Book!
I would recommend this book to anyone, I loved it. It’s a powerful book that is wonderfully written. Beautiful characters, I loved the relationships between them, some that were established and some that changed and grew over the story. And I loved the glimpse into the present day, which was sadly not the outcome I expected.
I’ve read a lot of WWII fiction, this is one of my favorites. It’s hard to imagine what people went through and what you would have done had you been in their situation. I would like to this I would follow the example set by Isabelle or Vianne.
grl hayyy - Wow
I don’t know what it was about it, but i could not put this book down. It was a roller coaster, filled with moments of happiness, mystery, panic, and immense pain. It left me in shock. Everyone should read this
Sherri Rose - The Nightingale
Truly remarkable and heart wrenching story. The tears flowed and my heart was so broken for these brave women. You will feel as if you know them and you want so badly to help them as they fight for love, freedom and survival. An amazing accomplishment.
Teebeesee90 - Amazing!
lauries85 - Outstanding book!!!
Cahello - Historical soap opera?
I’m not a book snob by any means, but this was more similar to a soap opera than a good historical fiction, which I thought I was getting into. It’s entertaining to some degree, but some of the details don’t line up with the era the book took place in and it has a lot of cliches.
Fix The Update Button - Amzazing
This story took its time to unravel and by the middle I couldn’t put it down. As a Jewish woman and a human being, I look at the world wondering what is to become of us all. Most of us have not lived through wartime and after reading this vivid story, I hope we never do. This story reinvigorated my faith in my own courage and everyone else’s.
Sandman505 - Anazing!!!!
One of the best books I have ever read. Towards the end I could not put the book down. This book will stay with you, move you, and possibly make you cry.
Whenever I think I have it rough all I have to do is think of the The Nightingale and life is not that bad.
TiffaniHull - The Nightingale
Slow start but a few chapters in and I could not put it down!
8fleurs - Nail biter!
Hannah keeps you riveted on what may happen next and delivers a truly genuine accounting of the way life was for those unfortunate French citizens caught in the occupation. One of my favorite books of the year. Well done!

I read this incredibly special book 3 years ago and I still think of it often. Wonderful story telling, so satisfying to discuss with other readers. If you liked “All The Light We Cannot See” you will thoroughly enjoy this book.

jennyschumi - Not worth it
A potentially good story ruined by soap-opera-style writing, bad editing and poor research. Do not recommend.
MelissaUpNorth - The tears! The TEARS!
I quickly became spellbound by this book, and when my husband walked in on me with an ocean gushing from my eyes, I told him it was the best book I had ever read. And I stand by it.

Susa Marie - The best book I've read in years
I keep looking for another book as good as this one. An exciting, amazing story. I think it changed me. I am a very critical reader too. I love books that bring significant historical periods to life with depth to their characters and respect for the time and culture in which the stories unfold. I doubt the author will ever be able to top this one. I have bought this book for others too who have told me they loved it.
Mafawe - The Nightingale
A real page turner. Although historically accurate, it is a very emotional and heart wrenching read. It makes you think of what is important in life; not material things, but love in its many forms and how valuable it is to tell those you cherish just how much you do love them. It's a story of survival and how the human psyche can keep us going despite unbearable cruelty and immense tragedy. Well written and certainly worth the read.
Raelyn2007 - Amazing story
The story kept me at the edge of my seat. The characters came to life and you can feel their emotions as you read. Very well written.
Max6789 - The Nightengale
A question. Isabel was selfish and defiant as are many teenagers, but what was so powerful a catalyst that she would become involved in the dangerous underground? To impress a lover does not seem enough.
Daisydee19 - The Nightingale
I lay here having finished the book and I am in tears. I have always read these kinds of books but this book has opened my eyes so much more to what all the people of the war suffered. Those who left to fight, those left behind to raise families alone and lives lost at the camps. This story made it feel so real. Their pain, their love, their need to fight for survival at all costs. What a beautiful story.
Paocorreal - Great story
I must say this book is excellent the story is thrilling and full

The description of the atrocities and hardships faced by the French as represented by sisters Vianne and Isabelle often brought tears to my eyes.
A magnificent example of writing.

I was looking for a new book to read and this was suggested to me. I read the last 15 chapters in one day. It was so hard to put down. It is such an amazing, well written book. I would recommend this to anyone!
ahagey - Nightingale
Ok, first off ‘woah’. 🤭🤭 This book is absolutely riveting. The author illustrates the series of events into a web of cunning, passion, fear, and the sheer perseverance of the characters in the book.
Just a quick note, it takes about 100 or so pages to really get you hooked. So give it some time, and pretty soon you will be unable to put it down! 😅
I loved this book and highly recommend it to EVERYONE. Even if historical books aren’t your forte, this is still an amazing, amazing story!
And one more thing to note; get your tissues out, because you are going to cry!!
Mrs. MS 2018 - The best book that I have ever read!
I really don’t know what to say. It is absolutely amazing. I cried during the last few chapters- a cry like no other.... I feel so bad for the families who went through that HELL.... This is a MUST read ...Ok, I’ll go now- I’m about to read it again! ❤️
MJW6506 - A page turner!
Despite having been pummeled by bombs and seeing limbs blown off her fellow French neighbors, Isabelle is nevertheless defiant in the face of the Nazis. It doesn’t seem plausible that someone would so openly defy the Nazi’s authority, who at that point in the book had made clear their violent tendencies. I found her character highly irritating, in that she would put so many lives at risk, including her own, just to scowl at a Nazi. It frayed my nerves and annoyed me no end and just did not seem very plausible for a story. I was relieved when she finally left her family alone, and certainly much less annoyed with her antics, heroic though they may be.
HOWEVER, it was a page-turner of a book and I found myself longing to get back to it every time I had to put it down to pay attention to real life. So while it may have started off as a bit of a hokey story, the weight of it slowly took on more and more gravity and I was absolutely hooked! Go Nightingale! I was in tears by the end.
This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I am definitely picking up her next one. Well done!

My heart couldn’t take it but I couldn’t put it down. Long after I was finished I couldn’t stop thinking about this story. This book made it difficult to move on to my next read.
Hooked to this book! - Amazing Book!!!!
I absolutely love this book! I was doing a book report and was dreading the idea of having to read a book, but then I found this one and I couldn’t put it down! All my teachers laughed at how much I rave over this book. So do all my friends. Most of them have started to read the book and already love it. Even the ones who are to read. If that sends any message. It’s amazing. I just hate the fact that there’s no more left. It’s such a good book! It’s my new favorite!!
ChristieVI - The Nightengale
Wonderful book! Historically authentic and addictive so I just kept reading and am sad that it ended...Now I’m looking forward to reading another book by Kristen Hannah. I love them all.

meldosreis7 - My New Favorite Book
This is hands down one of my favorite books of all time. There are so many twists and turns, and I can honestly say that I know so much more and have so much more respect for those involved in WWII than I did before. This is a great read for anyone looking to learn, through a capturing and tumultuous story, about courage, friendship, and dignity.
Creele - A MUST!
This book is by far one of the best books I have ever read! I could not put the book down! I stayed up until three in the morning reading at times. I have yet to find a book that reels me in and keeps me captivated the way The Nightingale did. I cannot wait to read it again!
MygiftsA&L - FANTASTIC!!!!!
This book is terrific! Even if you don’t typically like books about the war or set during war time, this book is still a definite read! I will miss these characters for sure! Thank you again Kristin Hannah, for a great read!
CWILSON28 - My Favorite!

Kristin - Speechless
This is hands down my favorite book I’ve ever read. I was 100% invested in the charters’ lives from page one. To say that I couldn’t put it down is an understatement. Long after I finished the book I still find myself wondering what these people I’ve grown to love are doing, as though they actually exist out in the world somewhere.
The Seven - Just Wow
The Nightingale is a great representation of women in the war and the sacrifices and hardship that they endured. It tells the unspoken and imaginable bravery of women in WW2, through the two sisters. Read with the warning of how hooked you will be of this book and the effect it will leave with u; in tears and appreciation for the women during the war.
Unhappy queen - Loved it!

Ugdrcvjiyfxcnkllllknfddcv - A literary masterpiece
One of my favorite things is reading a line in a book that makes me pause. I read it again...let the words fill my mind silently. Then I read it aloud, and allow the words to roll off my tongue. Then again; faster, slower, in a new rhythm. That’s when I know I have found literature gold. The Nightingale, by Kristin Hannah, is one such book of gold. ✨
Initially, I read this novel because I heard it was comparable to All the Light we Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. (Which I LOVE)
While it did have similarities with the theme of German Occupied France during WWll it had its own very unique story line to tell...
This book was a masterpiece. Kristin Hannah delivered a novel with rich language, imagery, and complex multidimensional characters. I couldn’t get enough of this story and it stuck with me long after I had finished reading.
I highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys the beauty of literature. It’s a story of love, hope, and history. It reminds you of the tragedy that so many people endured during WWll, as well as the endurance of the human spirit and what can develop when people refuse to give in to circumstances deemed bigger than themselves.
I wish I could grant it more than five stars. This book is historical fiction at its best.

rokinrev - Amazingly Powerful
“In love, we find out who we want to be; in war we found out who we are.”
This is a story of Occupied France in the time of WW2. It is focused on the Rossingol sisters: Vianne and Isabelle, abandoned before the war by their father they grew up in orphanges and schools until one marries and the other is dismissed from every school she is in. Seemingly total opposites, they end up crossing paths and affecting each other’s lives in the way only war can. One becomes a leader in the resistance movement. The other loses her husband to a POW camp and quietly changes lives in her own small town. Vianne explains that for her, it was a “shadow war” and those left behind did what they could to survive while women like Isabelle/Juliette were more active and paid the ultimate price. “Men tell stories. Women get on with it” she explains to her youngest, himself older and a doctor, asking about the aunt he barely knew existed.
They had no idea what they accomplished. As a reviewer, I was literally glued to this depressingly hopeful story of survival at any cost during the horrors of terrible atrocities. As Americans, we heard in school of the holocaust that Germany waged on the world. However, we didn’t hear of those left behind-much. I've stood in Sachsenhausen Camp in Germany. I’ve seen pictures and heard stories here in Upstate NY where the only refugee Jews were taken in not 60 miles from here. I am old enough to have college roommates request another room because of my German heritage. Occupied France wasn’t part of what I knew about. Thanks to Kristin Hannah, I now have a better view.
This book will make you cry, will give you strange unsettled dreams, and affect you in unusual ways. I highly recommend it and I will eagerly wait for the movie reportedly in the works. 5/5

Duck_duck123 - Riveting
I’ve never felt so submerged in a novel and I have certainly never cried while reading and I did in this one. This book should be a part of schools curriculum.
Squirewillard - Please read this book!
I have never written a book review but want to encourage everyone to take a chance on reading this one. It is one of the most powerful and memerizing books that I have ever read. It is difficult subject matter i know but the artistry and beauty of this story will linger and uplift you long after you have finished reading it. Please do take a chance and read this book! You will thank me later!
ANikkidd - I didn't want it to end
This book was amazing, one that has resonated with me. She dives deep into the characters and their lives in WWII. Such wonderful perspective. It was heart wrenching. Worth the read!
coyotespirit2 - The Nightingale
One of. The best books I have read. I didn’t want it to end. I am ordering a new book today.
BeetHoneyB - The Nightingale
I am not easily impressed, however this book moved me. Excellently written. When I had first read the description months ago I wasnt that intrigued, so I waited until a family member wanted to read it with me.. and just wow. Not a book to pass up.
Marysl88 - Enjoyable despite cliches galore
The story was engrossing, but I have to admit to rolling my eyes at some of the narrative cliches and overwrought descriptions of everything French. With that said, I enjoyed the read and cried buckets.
mrgoin - The Nightingale
My favorite book since I turned the first page. I learn so much about the War,families, people who fight even in fear and starvation. The human spirit will always survive when good over evil is the battle song. Sally Goin
Bland Pam - Best book ever
By far the best book I’ve read in a while. I don’t like any of her other books though. Don’t over look this one. You can’t put it down.
Kleighg - Touching Story
Such an incredible story of survival and loss and heroism. I loved everything about this novel.
Cat Palmer - Empowering
Not just for women. This is a story of human resilience. Beautifully curated, immaculate design. I will remember it forever, the realism, the characters, and the humanity it exemplifies. Highly recommend for women of all ages, men should read this too.
LostGirlNeverland - Great story!!!!
I COULD NOT put it down. This is a must read for anyone who loves WWII fiction. The only thing I didn’t like was that it was a little too descriptive with a rape scene, but it’s worth reading definitely!!!!
molly molls - Simply amazing
I could not put this book down. I love reading about WWII and this being my first Kristin Hannah book, I was blown away. A great read for anyone who wants to read about the women in WWII. Great historical fiction that clearly had a lot of research put into it. I’m sure college students can relate, but during college, I “lost” my love for reading because of all of the required reading. The Nightingale has reignited my love for books and since then, I have read another K. Hannah book (Winter Garden) and it only took me 2 days. I recommend that one as well! Enjoy!
Really scary - A book has never touched me as much as this book.
This book is impossible to put down and is so beautifully written. I have never read a book so fast in my life. Such a great read. My favorite book forever.
Dr. P. Hall - The Nightingale

Aabix - One of Her Best
I haven't read a book this real, this raw, this riveting in a long time. I agree with the other reviews - you can in vision that time in history, feel the characters' heart aches - be along for the ride - making it impossible to put this book down. It is a must read. Don't forget the box of tissues.
Xelpelpx - Amazing!
Beautifully written! I can't say enough about this book. The imagery and emotion seen and felt while reading was like nothing I've read ever read before. Loved it!

NCW22 - Emotional Page-Turner
There are not many books in which I am so vested in the characters that I truly feel an emotional attachment to them. The Nightingale was different. This book absorbed me so fully to the point that I found myself crying several times, which is extremely unusual for me, and I couldn't put the book down. Although this book is fiction, the story is totally believable, as if it could have been taken straight from the pages of the two main characters' diaries during WWII. Such a tragic but great story!
