The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins Book Summary

The #1 New York Times bestseller, USA Today Book of the Year and now a major motion picture starring Emily Blunt.
Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple having breakfast on their deck. She's even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life—as she sees it—is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

And then she sees something shocking. It's only a minute until the train moves on, but it's enough. Now everything's changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel goes to the police. But is she really as unreliable as they say? Soon she is deeply entangled not only in the investigation but in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

The only reason why I’m giving this four stars is because I briefly-although I still wasn’t sure until the end of the book-knew who was involved in the mystery. Just by the way everyone acted I knew it wasn’t that character or that character and the ending was pretty predictable by the prologue. But it still shocked me on how everyone’s lives truly were and the way peoples behaviors shifted and the clues shifted and that’s when I really couldn’t stop turning the pages. I still recommend this book.

Reads so much like a melodramatic soap opera. Lots of marital spats, infidelity, the shrink, drunken spouses…oh yes, and somewhere in here is a murder mystery

The plot was interesting, but the characters were all so morally and emotionally bankrupt that I stopped caring what happened to any of them. The last few chapters played out like a bad episode of Jerry Springer. It would have been nice if at least one character had a redeeming quality.

Absolutely brilliant. Started 10/22, finished 10/30. Even years later, it still sends chills down your spine. Brilliant

Captivating. Ended up reading it in 4 days, as time permitted.

Couldn’t wait to get to the end so I could move on to a good book. This is a familiar story about abusive men and the women who finally have the courage to take action. Movie versions are 2hrs but to spend hours reading this common story. Pass. The timeline mixup is the only creativity this book has. Again pass.

Absolutely amazing!

Amazing book

Loved the story

Loved the book. Could not put it down. The characters came to life for me. Kept me guessing the whole book.

A chilling perspective into the lives of others and what secrets are better left behind closed doors. I enjoyed this novel, but guessed at the story turning points after the first chapter. An interesting concept with unremarkable execution.

Once you catch this train, there is no getting off. This is a great book.

It was an easy read. I enjoyed the mystery of it all.

I read it in Spanish and English and both ways I got stuck trying to figure out how everything was going to end

this book captivated me from the start and i was so attached to the story all the way through. being able to see the story through the eyes of each of the three women made the plot so complex and that much more satisfying when it was resolved. 10/10 writing! i loved it!!

I read this book over the course of 10 days. At first, I read it in small sections, almost daily, skipping 1 or two days only. When I got to the halfway point, I read it at an exponentially quick pace - and I read the last 100 pages in the same night. This book offers three different perspectives, warping the timelines perfectly to leave the reader always wondering what’s gonna happen next. The three main characters, all women, are sometimes relatable, as none of them live perfect lives - they deal with internal and external battles of their own, their stories unfolding before our eyes... slowly colliding, accelerating the story so much more. This murder mystery book had an ending I was not prepared for, and I don’t think anyone else was, which is why the ratings and reviews are only good for this nice.

This book was hard to put down from the moment I started reading. The twists and turns don’t end, with the end being the biggest twist. It’s very well written with lots of imagery. Highly recommend for those that love a thriller, mystery, mixed with obsession and forbidden romances.

So good

Had me guessing until the very end. Couldn’t put the book down. Love the way it’s written

Paula Hawkins style of writing is concise yet but still holds my attention. And that’s great considering I have some attention deficit. I would gladly read any of her books.

Advice: jot down who is who and perhaps the dates at first. I got kind of confused (which might be due to my aging brain). But great final portion of the book!

This has got to be as good as Gone Girl. Looking forward to the movie!

From the beginning, this book captures you and will not let you go until the very end. And when it ends, you will have wished it hadn’t! Fabulous writing! Brilliantly thought out characters and full of so much suspense. Love it!

It was amazing. Best book I’ve read

I haven’t had time to read in ages, accidentally bought this book while trying to buy a book for a college course. Decided over a weekend of travels that I’d read it. Took me less than 48 hours, I could barely put it down. Never once did I get bored. Fell asleep at night reading it. I couldn’t put it down. A must read! Only reason I take a star off is because there’s always that “I want to know what happens to these characters at the end” questions that you can only ponder and make up to conclude what happens to them in the end. I do recommend.

I couldn’t put this book down. The suspense and mystery were perfectly blended. I have yet to see the movie and I’m afraid to because this quickly became one of my favorite books.

Found on Siri

This was one hell of a story. I’m an avid reader and truly could not put this book down (well, my iPad at least). Well done Ms.Hawkins, well done.

Books mad crazy mad lit too

Great read, wonderfully twisted. Now I’m excited to see the movie and compare.

It takes a lot now days for a book to fully pull me in because of my busy schedule but I found myself staying up late in order to read just a little more. I feel like you could’ve figured out the ending easily but I was so invested I decided not to think about it. Rach is a very relatable character and I think if you’re looking for a fast paced book to read, this is it.

I really enjoyed this book! It was very well written I couldn’t stop reading

I was looking for a page-turner for vacation and decided to read this based off of the majority of positive reviews. This book was a huge disappointment. Definitely not a page-turner and took me weeks to force myself through it. It is pretty obvious who the murderer is, but I kept reading, hoping for some interesting or surprise explanation for why, but again was disappointed.

Really enjoyed this novel. Very unexpecting twist. Also, a tear jerker. Highly recommended if you are into suspense.

Excellent Turn pager! Better than the movie.

I couldn’t put this book down.. loved it

While it does contain many genre tropes and some predictable plot turns. The novel succeeds because of great descriptions, interesting themes and a surprising ending.

Go in to the mind of a sniveling amoral crybaby.

This Book Was ALL OVER the place!!! Kept having to go back to Chapters, & figure out what Day I was On!!?? Didn't mind, the different characters perspective!! However, would've been a MUCH SMOTHER & BETTER READ, if the storyline was told, chronologically by each individual!!

I could not put this book down! By far the most exciting book i have ever read!

Interesting, but not interesting enough to not be able to put it down.

The main character is the worst. It was hard to get through because she was so annoying. I think you're supposed to sympathize with her but it's impossible to do so. The idea of the storyline is interesting I guess but the characters are so terrible it is hard to get through. I'm not sure how this has such glowing reviews. It really is a terrible book.

I lovedi

I'm glad I read book before I watched the movie. A great read!!! Wow until the end!

My first thriller! What to read next? Fav book so far!

Had some surprises, but you don't find yourself rooting for any of the characters. Ending seemed way too simplistic and cliche. Felt like it was a waste of time.

Couldn't put it down. Rachel is needy and seems to be at a loss. She's lost the man she loves, her marriage, her house, her job. What's left? In spite of her I like Rachel. She keeps trying and losing but t I eep rooting for her. I want her to make it. I know she'll solve this mystery of the woman she fantasizes about from the train. Great thriller, but with strong character and a moving plot.

Slow start... amazing ending. Quite a page turner... can't go to bed until you finish the book. I can't remember the last time I gasped reading a book. I can see why they made it into a movie... can't wait to see the film ❤️️

Decent read, with a lot of unnecessary build up. I could not follow the authors style and it took me a while to figure out the multiple characters and what exactly the name of each chapter was supposed to meant. The back and forth on dates was very confusing to me and the 'suspense' was wasted on me. I hear the book is better than the movie. Guess I just saved 2 hours.

Worst.Book.I've.Ever.Read. Ever.

Here's all you need to know about the main character. She drinks, gets drunk, vomits, vows to stop drinking, doesn't. Repeat, ad nauseum. No wonder she doesn't know what's going on. Like a bad Lifetime movie the murderer spends his unveiling talking & talking. Dumbest murderer ever saving the only incriminating evidence linking him to the victim. Plot annoying with its shifting point of view. Cheap trick to hold readers interest when there is none. Not one sympathetic character. The train should pass this town by.

I almost put this book down several times before finally reading thru the end. This book was a bit confusing to me and a bit out there for my liking. I wanted to read the book before the movie was released and I did. Game changer... I never went to go see the movie. They say "The books are better than the movie."

Just so slow I finished it but it was a bit painful. I did watch the movie and it was much better.

Inside the mind of an introvert

Couldn't put it down

It catch you in some point, but it is not new. It is nice the way she use different characters to tell the story. The elements of mistery could be better.

I have insufficient funds apparently? Not true. I have 12.01 in my account. How can I not purchase a $10 book?

This book kept me on the tip of my seat the whole time I was reading it. Her way of writing is so refreshing and enjoyable that I plan to read more of her books.

Very good excellent thriller rocks you to bone

I have never written a review for a book before. I felt compelled because after getting halfway through I just could not finish this book and Googled the ending. Rachel's character is insufferable. I couldn't read another self-pitting page.

The most engrossing thing about this is the utterly unreliable narrators. Definitely keeps you involved. Then you wonder who is gaslighting whom. The who-dunnit is much less artful. It's fairly apparent who the bad-person is pretty early on.

Amazing, couldn't stop reading.

If you want to work hard at getting through the beginning of a book, go for it. Kind of like catching the right wave. Took me 3 tries. It's the way the author titles each chapter, the time sequences and dysfunctional characters themselves that got me so confused. Thought at first it was a woman with a split personality. I've read way better written books. Can't recommend.

This book was undoubtably a page turner. But there were definitely slow, repetitive sections. Whole chapters could have been taken Out or combined. And the character development... They were all pretty shallow characters. Yes, Rachel was an alcoholic, but oh my goodness, we could barely get through a sentence without mention of that fact. The other issue I had was that certain portions were very far fetched. Like the fact that literally every single time she went to a certain town, she ran into one of the main characters. Mediocre writing, but it kept my attention long enough to read it. I give it a C.

Amazing! Loved it. I see why some say certain things were predictable but it doesn't take away from the story. The ending was NOT predictable and I loved the book and loved getting in the mind of the main character. Though, it's not heavy in sophisticated literacy but it's a good read. I read it 17 books ago and I still remember the story vividly. I can't wait for her next book.

Wow was captured from start to finish. Fantastic listen. Will written!

This book was incredibly well written--characters' thoughts are depicted through first person and lead you through the engaging story with first person perspectives. Each character has their own viewpoint and interprets these viewpoints differently; this proves to be a very engaging part of the book. The book relies heavily on perspective and viewpoint from the main character, Rachel: quite a unique perspective. This is the make-it-or-break-it point of this book for readers: for me, her perspective on the world around her was thoroughly engaging and relatable--very fascinating at times. Engaging in the most peculiar yet fascinating way. For others, it may not be. That is where some people may find the beginning to be quite slow, insignificant. However, if readers look at the word choice, the perspectives, interpretation, and storytelling of each of these characters, many new features appear beneath the surface of these words. The book is incredibly well written.

I could not stop reading, lost a lot of sleep but it was worth it. Hawkins brings to life the catch phrase "the mind is a powerful thing" this book is exactly that. I loved it and recommend it.

Overall, I was very unimpressed with this tale. It took around 150 pages to become interested and even then I would describe it as mild interest. It was a boring book and I don't know why so many people hype it to be something it just isn't.

The first few chapters of the book are difficult especially if you don't pay attention to the titles and dates. It was definitely worth the effort to get past those preliminary chapters that set the scene for the rest of the book. I truly enjoy this with it twists and turns.

I think I went into this book with extremely high expectations! With all the comparisons to gone girl, I thought this book would be an interesting read. With similarities in the way the two books are written, gone girl is by far more thrilling. You realize how this book will end half way through. The main character became exhaustingly annoying to me. Possibly because of the redundancy of her very day life. All in all it was not great but not terrible. Just not as good as I expected it to be!

I had a hard time putting the book down. I would recommend.

Read this book in 5 hours. It was dramatically hyped up and was compared to gone girl. There is no comparison. This book is dry and boring and there are no surprising twists and turns. It didn't leave me with any unanswered questions and it did not move me. I wouldn't waste my time reading this.

This book was a page turner. I read it in 2 days and it affected me powerfully. I should give it 5 stars because I think it's true talent to be able to have that kind of influence on someone through the written word, but the feeling I have is just this sick, haunting feeling that I kind of want to shake. I felt the pain of all 3 women but I probably trust men less after finishing this book. I would recommend it with trepidation. But a powerful book nonetheless.

This book was horrible. I don't understand the people giving it rave reviews. It's slow, the characters are more irritating and unintelligible than Jar Jar Binks, the plot is predictable and boring, and overall the writing is sloppy and just unredeemable. I would not recommend this book to anyone. Don't waste the money.

The book was so slow and hard to follow. Couldn't make it past the third chapter. 0/10 would not recommend.

The main character(s) were not very likeable. Kept turning pages because I wanted to see how it ended. Overall I really enjoyed the book and twists but it is not as similar to Gone Girl as I had expected. Good but not amazing.

The book was absolutely amazing but it was kinda confusing cause with Anna, Rachel, and Megan all having some sort of relationship affair with Tom

Very thrilling, I couldn't put it down. I literally read it in a long rainy day.

Not a great book... I was very excited to read it given its 4.5 star rating and only kept reading it because of the same reason, waiting for something amazing to happen to turn the book around and it never happened. Very slow and repetitive. Doesn't start getting interesting until the last few chapters and even then it's such a short section and ends so abruptly as a reader I was still left unhappy. I did like the last line in the book, kinda made me smile and wonder, but overall not a book I would recommend to a friend or ever read again myself.

I picked this book up based on the plot twists comparisons to Gone Girl. I was, however, sadly disappointed at how the plot moved at a glacial pace bringing you to assume the ending half way through the story but forcing you through another 100+ pages just to confirm you were correct. I kept hoping for a big twist at the end but it didn't happen. It's an "ok" read but I wouldn't put it near the top of my list.

I loved this book

Excellent, plot twists & turns with well developed characters interest readers seeming as if they live normal though mildly dysfunctional lives...similar in many ways to most people in Great Britain- though could be USA or Western Europe.

It was a good read

I’m not sure how this book is receiving so much acclaim. The plot is too predictable and the characters that are developed have zero redeeming qualities.

One of my new favorite books. A good murder mystery book! Definitely rings true that from the outside looking in, isn't always what it seems! :)

It amazes me that this book has received such great reviews and that anyone would choose to make a movie of it. It is slow and drawn out and is basically the rantings of a mad woman. Finally, why do authors use the present tense to describe something that happened in the past? Save your money.

My husband had downloaded the audiobook and encouraged me to listen to it. I'd rather read than listen. I was hooked from the first page. A dramatic thriller and love story all in one. Pick this book up when you can devote two days to read it because you will become addicted to every plot turn in the story line.

Loved the book. Couldn't put it down.

I'm not disappointed, read it in 2 days. If you liked Gone Girl, you'll probably like this!

This was a very interesting book to read i loved all the characters and their storylines

This book was not my cup of tea. It was boring and I couldn't wait to finish it so I could move on to another maybe the movie will be more exciting.

Not very exciting

Well I literally fell asleep every time I picked this book up. Half way through it I went to see the reviews and seem as a lot of people found it just as boring. Gave up. Wasted time and money

Great book loved it kept me thrilled and curious the whole way well almost I figured it out about a little over halfway through but maybe that is just cause I read a lot but all in all I enjoyed it thought Anna was a little disturbed but whatever I loved the book I was kinda hoping for a better ending like more in detail of what Rachel went on to do was hoping for a bonding with Scott maybe. But I love it. Now to see the movie.

Don't get me wrong, the writing is stylish and interesting. I just couldn't relate to any of the characters.
