A broken engagement sends Graciela Harper crawling back to Heron Creek with her tail between her legs, but finds the sleepy little town too changed to set her life right. Not even her budding drinking problem can obscure her Gramps’s failing health, or erase the mental picture of her first love happily married to her childhood best friend. To top it all off, she’s having a heck of time convincing the town’s dashing young mayor of her unfit-for-dating status.

When the ghost of 18th century lady pirate Anne Bonny starts insisting on a near daily audience, Graciela has to confront something else she never expected—being certifiably nuts at twenty-five years old.

Her brand new "I don't give a crap" attitude makes it easy to dismiss the mysterious threats that seem to be tied to her search for more information on the long dead pirate, but when her family becomes a target, Gracie knows she needs to find out why the ghost insists on being a constant, reeking companion.

If Graciela can put aside her prejudice against people without a pulse, she may discover that Anne Bonny’s problems are intricately linked with her own. The past harbors answers could help the cantankerous spirit find closure, but she is, after all, already dead. If Graciela doesn’t move fast, she might find herself doing the haunting, instead of the other way around.

Not Quite Dead. Suspenseful and interesting. Unexpected turns keep it alive throughout, and keep me reading. Ms Payne can even successfully keep her sexual interest dangling in the air; she’s an incorrigible tease. The journals from the 1700s sound like she had written them herself. Thanks for bringing the language to the 21st century that modern readers can easily grasp. Voodoo is alive and thriving in many forms in the Americas. Ritualistic Cuban Santeria in Miami, Florida can still volley assaults when summoned by circumstances and persuasions. “Know what you are treading on” may not be a tired cliche.

I’m Thinking Cliffhanger. I read this because it was set in South Carolina. That being said, it could have been set in any southern state or town. The characters were all interesting. Whether you hate them or love them, there is definitely feelings for each one. Part of the mystery was predictable however other parts were not. As far as I’m concerned, there seems to be a cliffhanger with the Mayor…on to book 2!

Not quite dead. Awesome! I feel this book was well written and I love the storyline. I would've liked to see a couple of changes though but who knows? Maybe it will be in the next two books...

Not Quite Dead. Mostly an engrossing read, though it was a bit difficult to sort out who was who. It was also a bit long and tedious in some parts. Graciela's relationship with her Grandfather was very touching. It's too bad the ending was a cliffhanger. I'm not sure I want to read another book to find out what happens to these characters.

Not Quite Dead. When Graciela moves in with her ailing grandfather, she hopes to find time to recover from recent relationship trauma. Despite goals that include deciding whether or not to get dressed or become an alcoholic, her life suddenly fills with activity. She gets a job at the local library. The mayor takes an interest in her arrival. And a local pirate ghost lures her into a mystery that started hundred of years before. Will one of these lead her into danger? The story seemed to drag a bit, possibly because the main character doesn’t seem to grasp concepts that are all but spelled out by the author. I also found the love angle of this novel to move disturbingly quickly especially considering even Graciela recognizes that due to circumstances in her life, her appearance and aroma would be off-putting. At the very least, smooching would hurt with some of the injuries sustained by characters involved in the random mini smooch fests. However, the awkwardness and ridiculousness of some of this kept my interest.

Not Quite Dead. Not Quite Dead is an amazing ghost mystery. Extremely hard to put down and always driving your mind crazy with the question, What happens next?

Enjoyable read. Enjoyed the story line. Loved the main characters humor. Having a ghost as a character in the book added interest to the story. Will definitely read book 2 in the series.

So good!. This was awesome! This book has you go through all the emotions wrapped together perfectly from beginning to end. I couldn’t wait to find out the over 200 year mystery. On to the next book in the series.

Nemouse

Good and bad. Well crafted story but too much foul language and sexual references for me.

Lynzier

Fun to read!. This was a great read! Not at all what I thought it would be. Nice to find books that step out side of the formulaic box of most romance or adventure books! Good job!

Oh. He11. No.. Why ya gotta leave me hanging like that?!?! I stumbled upon this series, about like Gracie stumbles over everything! The dialogue between the characters is oddly believable, and had this reader running the gamut of emotions. I’m excited about the next book in the series!

Questions. This book was AMAZING but I got so mad when I made it to the end and still had several unanswered questions. The description of this book compared to the next make it seem like all your questions will be answered by the last page but that’s not the case

Hachiyobo

Not quite finished!. The review for this book is nearly impossible to write in a condensed version and still do it justice. Gracie Harper returns home depressed, falling apart, and borderline alcoholic to care for Gramps. His health, already failing rapidly declines as Gracie desperately tries to gain her footing in the town that owns her childhood. Beau, the handsome Mayor, is a better welcome wagon than the ghost of the insistent Anne Bonny. As childhood friendships are mended, Gracie learns she does not have to seal her heart away to survive. Forces beyond her imagination prove to have a vendetta against her that leave her risking everything if she can't solve the mystery. This amazing story sucked me in and spit me out with a myriad of emotions. My favorite character, Gramps, was written with such love and admiration that I dare say he transpired from someone very special. How lucky and loved we would all be to have a Gramps on our side. As for Beau … I look forward to reading more about this man who chisels patiently at the walls around Gracie's heart. So many characters in this book are worth loving, so start reading and join the adventure!

KRAYKATLADY

Interesting but a lot of filler.. Very well written & it kept me intrigued. However, when I got to the last page I was very displeased. I understand this is a series but not a single answer was necessarily given. I want to know what happens next. I thought about purchasing the second book, however, the first chapter made it seem as if I’m my questions would remain unanswered.

Aunt Baboo

Aunt Baboo. I couldn't put it down, I finally finished at 6 AM.

Loving the Lowcountry. I really, really enjoyed this book. It's obviously not like her Whitman University books, but that's okay! We meet 25 year-old Graciela Harper, Gracie, and know that things aren't going so well for her. She's decided to become an alcoholic, and is off to a really good start. I know alcoholism is no laughing matter, but you are looking at it from her point of view. She's a mess. Life has handed her more than a few lemons....it dropped her off in a grove, stole her sugar, and laughed in her face. She had a very messy breakup with her fiance, her grandfather's health is failing, and she moves back to where she grew up as child to take care of him. It's easy to see that she needs just as much taking care of as he does. After she makes quite the impression on her first morning back in Heron Creek, she seems quite content to bury her head under the covers in her old bedroom while drinking her sorrows away. The town she grew up in has changed and it hasn't changed. Still haunting her memories and the town are her former best friend Mel, and her first love, and now Mel's husband, Will. She's also lost the cousin who was like a sister to her, Millie, due to a event several years earlier.. As children, the four were inseparable, but now nothing is as it was. To top off the awkwardness of seeing Mel and Will, Gracie is now seeing a ghost. Anne Bonny, 18th century pirate, is now showing up and having Gracie rethink her drinking plans. She doesn't know if the ghost is real, but Anne definitely wants something from Gracie. Thrown into the mix are a handsome mayor who won't take no for an answer, a grumpy new boss who may just be out to get Gracie, and an ailing grandfather she's not ready to lose. I like ghost stories, and I like romances. This story reminded me a lot of Heather Graham books I've read, but it's still fresh and entertaining. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding Anne Bonny, and why it was Gracie that was able to see her. I enjoyed the budding romance between Mayor Beau and Gracie. I enjoyed the fact that sometimes, you really can go home. Have I said enjoyed enough yet? I laughed, I cried, and I might have a crushes on Will and Beau, and maybe even Gramps. Not Quite Dead was a quick read, and I'm so happy I picked it up. I hope you make a trip to Heron Creek soon. Author Lyla Payne says she writing book 2 as we speak. Can't wait!

Intriguing Read. This was my first book by Lyla Payne and I LOVED it. The characters are well developed and the story is well written. I was drawn into the story from the get go. I enjoyed the concept of the book. That is that Gracie, the main heroine, begins seeing a ghost. Gracie starts out the book broken and depressed and just wants to wallow. But it seems that fate has other plans for her. The problems that she is going through are real life problems and were easy for me to relate to. The secondary characters are wonderful, especially Gramps. I also loved how Beau was patient but supportive of her all the same. I felt many different emotions as I read this book. I also enjoyed the history aspect of the story that comes with Gracie learning about the ghost past. Highly recommend this book and series.

Not Quite Dead. I have read hundreds of these ebooks and by far, this is the most well written book of them all. I did find that the quality of writing was impressively strong at the beginning but then became less impressive from about the middle until the end and was perhaps rushed as it was excitedly written through the action-filled passages. The story itself, brings you in to their world and keeps you interested all the way through however. Overall, a good read and an entertaining one at that!

Pinky jay

Not Quite Dead. A good read. Would enjoy reading more about Gracie, Beau, and the ghosts. Fun!

LeighFrenz

Not quite Deadly. I remember reading this book awhile ago, I don’t remember crying so much when Gracie wanted nothing but to be with her gramps. He was a good old soul. I guess it depends on the time or month you are reading this book. I was so close to my mom, & my Grandma. They went the same way as for Gracie. I guess I must have read it far later in the year then January to April. Those are really hard months for me. When I get a chance to get iTunes cards or iBooks cards I will definitely get more of this author’s books. I will get the second and third, then go from there. A book is great for a bookcase, as the story will be different every time you read it. B.B.

Wine please

Read it!. I'm not much of a "paranormal" reader but the events of this book are presented in a very feasible way. I have always felt that some people have a connection with life, feelings and situations beyond the here and now. This story really plays with all you emotions in an honest way. The main character is a flawed but has hope, kindness and loyalty. Read it!

Banbamlaf

Not Quite Dead. Loved your story. It was well written and easy to read. I love that you didn't over focus on small details and back track a lot like many writers do. Great read.

Sanitaa

Not quite dead. Likeable characters, but juvenile writing. All girl power and life affirmations overlaid on the thinnest of plots.

DaniTatie

Simple, but entertaining. Get a new proofreader and editor. The story is cute and a good way to pass the time, but there were a fee inconsistencies and lots of spelling issues.

Kapish09

Fantastic !. With a great plot, real characters and an easy and beautiful writing style , this book certainly kept me captivated till the very last page .

Mrs MMD

Great Mystery. Very well written - you get a good sense of the setting and characters. Mystery kept me going to the end, and curious as to what happens next.

Harle-q

Fun and fast. Great pacing, humorous, especially in regards to her little drinking problem, sexy and quick witted, but with also a well written emotional hook. lots of little nooks and crannies for the plot to be developed from and twists to jump out. All round great sunday read :)
