Private investigator Cormoran Strike must track down a missing writer -- and a sinister killer bent on destruction -- in this "wonderfully entertaining" mystery (Harlan Coben, New York Times Book Review) that inspired the acclaimed HBO Max series C.B. Strike.
When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days -- as he has done before -- and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, he discovers that Quine's disappearance is no coincidence. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were published, it would ruin lives -- meaning that almost everyone in his life would have motives to silence him. When Quine is found brutally murdered under bizarre circumstances, Strike must race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any he has encountered before . . . A compulsively readable crime novel with twists at every turn, The Silkworm is the second in J. K. Rowling's highly acclaimed series featuring Cormoran Strike and his determined young assistant, Robin Ellacott.

The Silkworm. I liked the first book more. This was interesting but longer than needed. Strike is a heroic character with a persona of negativity...still an entertaining read!

BigLar81

Great read. Took longer than expected to hook me, but once it did I could not stop reading. The slow start caused me to reduce the rating, but I am glad I kept reading. I recommend this book to all who love mysteries.

Marzipan24

Loved it. I loved The first of this series, the Cuckoo's Calling, and loved this second book with private detective Strike and Robin his assistant. The mystery is difficult enough to figure out and the characters are well developed with all their quirks, strengths, and individual faults. I look forward to many more adventures of Strike and Robin.

**1932

Story is decent, but lacking punch. Of the three books I read during my summer vacation, this was middle of road. I was not disappointed for the time spent, but the fact that I think of the time spent tells me the story was lacking. Characters interesting, but lacking depth. Plot draws you in, but the story is not that enthralling. The main character has real potential, but he needs more depth and his assistant is a bland as white bread toast. Lastly, there is far too many vulgarities expressed.

Bkmms101

Wonderful. A great read- so glad I I chose it. Great character description and plot- I could barely put it down!

Yelps10056

Good read, but the first book was better. I just felt like the ending was too cluttered; not believable. To read the entire book and to have an uneventful ending like that kinda ruined it for me. Instantly dropped one star (4 star book).

KnowsHerMusic

Great read!. JK Rowling does not disappoint in this second book. The characters, mystery and British vocabulary are all up to par for an adult version of HP awesomeness. Can't wait for book 3!

Sbcg79

A bit of a letdown. Was expecting another great hit, but it didn’t bring it as the first one did.

Atmo999

Just OK. The two main characters are the best aspects of this second in a series, but I found the many other characters boring and not worthy of a first rate mystery. I do hope to see a better written third in the series but with a more engaging plot and better development of the suspects.

Rocketgirl56

The Silkworm. Rowling's Potter books were brilliant, and The Cuckcoo's Calling was good, but this book was a huge disappointment. Too long, too slow moving, too little action, and too many under developed characters about whom I could have cared less! Except for my compulsion to finish what I start, I would have stopped reading many, many times. I do NOT recommend except to those who like gratuitous sexual references and gore.

Terielise

Hard to put down. Thoroughly enjoyed this odd mystery. Lively characters, strange personalities and circumstances to create a fascinating read.

Jt098

Great except …. For me, I found the descriptions from the novel written by the murdered author, as well as the murder itself, too intense and grotesque. And as they were repeated throughout the book, I was unable to erase it from my head. It took a lot for me to continue to read, but I enjoyed very much the main characters - Strike & Robin - so I did finish it. Also, LOVE a mystery that doesn’t get solved until the end. Lots of suspects and twists. Better would have been a lot less grotesque and more mystery twists/turns leading to finding the truth of what happened.

Shyloh

Way too many adverbs!. Way too many unnecessary and irritating adverbs. I expected better writing.

Seymourdequeen

Tedious.... Like most everyone, was really looking forward to this one, after Cuckoo. But it's boring and depressing. I gave up about halfway through.

AmandaPena2013

Great mystery novels!. My only regret is I read through both books so quickly and there aren't any more to read! Love the characters and how well Rowling's writing style flows. I feel like I can read twice as fast because she does such a good job of making it seem like you're really there; like you're witnessing the events for yourself. Can't wait for the next installment!

Brenda Brophy

The Silkworm. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Plots within plots and a very surprising ending. With 100 pages left I could not put it down. One of THE best Books of this genre I’ve read in years. I could Not put it down as the plot unfolded

J drop

The silkworm. Really terrific. Loved it.

Yensid98

Keeps You Guessing. Characters are vivid and relatable. Mystery is engaging, grotesque and labyrinthine though it all adds up. Great read but it does drag a bit in the middle.

NYC.stace

Good read !. Enjoyed this :)

Raebiebaby

Absolutely Horrible. I loved Cuckoo’s Calling. Loved it. This book was shockingly bad. Disjointed, rambling, tedious, and weird. It made me uncomfortable, and I’m pretty openminded. Don’t waste your time. It’s impossible to finish. I’m so surprised that there are any good reviews on here. It makes me think they were paid reviews.

Cindijm

The Silkworm. I got this book thinking it would be great because JK Rowling had written it. Boy was I wrong! This was, by far, THE WORST book I have ever wasted my time on! If I could have given it a negative rating, I would have. Very disjointed with a lot of meaningless verbiage which felt like it was added just to increase the length of the book. Very disappointed.

Ravensmoon

Phenomenal. I enjoyed the first one, but this novel was a page turner. Exceptional read.

Mikbon

Sequel not as good. I truly enjoyed The Cuckoo's Calling but the sequel was not up to the quality of the first. There are way too many characters and the only ones that were well developed were the ones appearing in the ongoing series. The novel itself was much too long with the protagonist mulling the same thoughts over and over and over. The murder victim never becomes truly known as a person and ultimately I honestly didn't care who killed him. I had to make myself finish the book only because I had too much time and money invested to simply quit.

The Silkworm. Absolutely great !!

Nancy layne

The Silkworm.. Loved The Cuckoo's Calling but thus was a huge disappointment. The characters were ill defined, the plot messy. Dragged on and on.

Kmillerca

Cringe. The actual mystery is decent but the character filler for strike and robin has my eye rolling very far back into my head.

3gsx

Wonderful!. I really enjoyed The Cuckoo's Calling, so I was pleased to see this follow up. Better than the first!

Ambertje83

Loved it. I love all the Cormoran Strike books. Can’t wait for the next one already

Granny5050

Genius! Can't wait for next Galbraith, uh, Rowling. Reading this book was a pleasurable experience. A master writer, "Galbraith" develops characters and drops hints throughout the book that still led to a surprise ending. If you deign to read this book at intervals, you better wait until you have uninterrupted time because this THE SILKWORM is a page-turner.

Halsterx

The Silkworm. Excellent read. It was hard to follow all of the characters with all of the references to the imaginary book, BUT I couldn’t put it down. Interesting plot twists. Highly recommend “The Silkworm”!

Wlkromer

Silkworm. I love the way the characters evolve in these books. The plot twist and turns and when you have it all figured out. You are dead wrong. Keep the stories coming. W Kromer

Big Richard head

The silkworm. I love Robert galbreath/j k rowlings writing style, very lifelike and natural. She alway writes interesting stories ,that I can really get into.

Bookie65

Snooze Fest!. I liked the Cuckoo!s Calling, but this was a chore! Life's too short, don't bother!

Msu79

The Silkworm. Cormoran Strike and Robin, his assistant are a wonderful sleuthing pair. I look forward to more books in this series and can't wait to see what's next! Hard to put this one down and tend to life!

Ms. Larson

Yawn. Dull and contrived.

Sookiep

The silkworm. Comoran is a great character, but please let up on the weather descriptions and his painful leg. I get it. The weather is terrible. And his leg hurts!

SilverFame

Engaging plot, mature narrative. This book has it all- the sweet heat of unrealized romance intertwined in a whodunnit mystery and a narration that shows the authors deep understanding of human nature. It keeps you guessing but doesn't build up the suspense to an intolerable level such that the reader is tempted to skip to the end of the book.

Sth yoga girl

The Silkworm. I enjoyed reading the first book in this series, but was very disappointed in this book.

Giv10

Hooked by this author. After reading the first Galbraith novel I couldn’t wait to start the second and am now reading the third of the series. The books are so subtle and well written. The author, once again, leads the reader down an organized path of interesting and well defined characters. The endings are conclusive and satisfying. A great read, can’t say enough about how interestingly well they are written. I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys absorbing stories with intelligent characters who are described with just enough detail for the reader to use their own imagination.

GaryBev

Great Book!. A wonderful sequel to the Cuckoo's Calling. Very entertaining with many twists and turns in the plot. You will not be disappointed!

Baukunst

Irritating. and annoying.

NateBinSf

Great read. Couldn’t put it down.

Melis196

Tough to Follow at Times but Packed with Suspense!. A little tough to follow (don't try to read this unless you are completely concentrating) and almost too graphic (some of the descriptions made me a little nauseous) but amazingly suspenseful book, with a fantastic plot!!

Kevinsac

Disappointing. There's a first time for everything. I adore JKRowling....but I couldn't wait for this book to come to an end.

My fav video app

Strike Series- the Silkworm. I read this book immediately after having read The Cuckoo's Calling. I am loving this series, but did not think the content of this "murder mystery" was very believable or like able, actually. I still like the writing and am loving the character development that is slowly trickling out with each book, but I hope mr Galbraith, aka Ms Rowling can step it up again like Cuckoo's Calling. I love the British mystery aspect.

Monstergirl

The silkworm. I love this book, very intriguing and had me guessing till the end. Strike is written with depth of character and heart under the gruff and large exterior, although he seems much older than his 36 years. I can't wait till the next book!

Martha Belle

The Silkworm. I am a fan of Cormoran Strike and can't wait for the next adventure. Ms. Rowling has a literary style that grabs you immediately and doesn't let you go until the last page.

Scottolini

The silkworm. Love the developing characters in this series. Great suspense and mystery causing an all-nighter Great story development.

Trxstewart

Loved it but.... When are they ever going to kiss?!!! A love story is all that is missing from this thriller!

SPBerko

The Silkworm. Great read, keeps you in suspense and on the edge of your chair through every page.

Kyzar67

Silkworm. Slow doesn't hold my interest. Tooooo much time spent on trivial, uninteresting details.

Manawakian

The Silkworm. Take out the detailed descriptions of Strike's travels on foot, by bus, subway, train and car, the problems with his leg, his living conditions and the gloomy London weather and this 450 page book would shrink to half. Having enjoyed Cuckoo Calling was looking forward to this but found it tiresome reading.

Loved "The Cuckoo's Calling". Whoever this author really is...lady can tell a story :-)

Lopipari

The Silkworm. I absolutely loved this book. Looking forward to more Cormoran Strike stories!

Janescastner

The Silkworm. I just loved the new Galbraith/Rowling novel The Silkworm. The only problem was that I read it too fast. now I'll have to read it again. This a great choice for our first book club book!

Brownies mom

Interesting BUT too long and tedious. I love Strike and Robin and hope the author continues to write about them, but please make the stories easier to follow.

Leg41828

Awesome 2nd book. Loved it

Jacksonms22

The silkworm.. Just got read the Silkworm and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well written, full of surprises!!

Roma27

Boring. I know the book is in a different genre than the Harry Potter series, but you would expect better from an author who wrote one of the best series of our time. It actually makes me wonder if Rowling actually wrote Harry Potter or who is actually writing this series. It is mostly boring monologue that drags on forever. I kept hoping it would get better, maybe a little suspense, but it is nothing more than explanations and constant reference to Strike's prosthesis. I was disappointed with "A Casual Vacancy", merely pleased with "The Cuckoo's Calling", and very disappointed with this one. Last time I buy one of Rowling's/Galbraith's books. Nothing original here except maybe for the way the murder was committed. Save your money!

Seawich

The Silkworm. Decidedly disappointing-irritating, disjointed plot.

Wislanscraft

The silkworm. As expected... Wonderful!

SAppelquist

The Silk Worm.. Adored it. An awesome conceit--Strike investigates the death of an author who has written a novel "The Silkworm." An insiders's look at the grimy world of publishing. Have already quoted Chard, "The world needs more readers, not more writers..." One question--why are the villains insane? Is this a holdover from Voldemort?

Aylettmeadow

Great book!. Loved this book! I hope there are more in this series!!!!

Lisagal14

Excellent, smart novel. Loved this book! Great sequel to the first Cormoran Strike novel. Couldn't put it down! I sure hope there's another in the works. Enjoy!!

TCMG

Welcome back. Becoming a fan of Strike and Robin's adventures! Can't wait for the next one.

Economan1

A fabulous read. Fantastic character development, great and entertaining writing. The author is simply one of the very best. Not to mention the story which is suitably complex. I couldn't put this book down and very much look forward to her next!

Crittersmith

I could not wait to read this book!. I love this book, the story, the characters. I want more.....

Fs from TX

Silkworm. Too perverse and grotesque! Too wordy.

Cgnuimhf

Can't Wait. After reading "Cuckoo's Calling", I was hoping J.K. Rowling would continue writing more in this series. I'm so happy she decided to do so, even after it was revealed that she was indeed the author.....have read the 2 novels she's written for the adult market after Harry Potter. Have not been disappointed one bit.

LCPIO

I Want More!!!. Can only hope for more books to come out soon! I love Cormoran, Robin, their London and all the characters. Very clever plots that keep you thinking until the end. Give us more!!

Chicken sister

The Silkworm. Stunning.

A person that enjoys reading

Silkworm. I was disappointed with the story and the way it was written.

Camerashyinma

Excellent entertainment. I couldn't put this one down-- it kept me hooked to the very last word. This gal can write!!

Sketchesofmadness

Another Fabulous Cormoran Strike Novel. It's safe to assume that if you enjoyed the first Cormoran Strike outing in Cuckoo's Calling you will find much to love about Silkworm. The mystery at hand is certainly dark, lurid and entertaining, however the heart and soul remains Cormoran and Robin. I eagerly anticipate the next entry in this series and wholeheartedly recommend the books to mystery fans.

Ladyloveandlaughter

Fantastic!. This novel is a superb mystery novel with plenty of suspense. The writing is fast paced and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Galbraith (Rowling) twists and turns the story to keep you guessing till the very end. However sometimes the wit of the novel is a little too biting and almost comes off as condescending. However this is a great follow up to The Cuckoo's Calling and I can't wait to read the next one.
