The Hanover square affair. Good murder mystery, had my attention the whole way through!

It was hard to like the main character. But the novel was compelling. The author sets the story in London in 1816, right after Wellington beat Napoleon at Waterloo. These were terrible times to live in dirty, polluted cities and London was the worst. Rigid class distinctions exacerbated the misery of all but the very wealthy. All this can make a fascinating thriller, and Ashley Gardner does just that. Lots of twists and turns later this story ends satisfactorily with most of its questions answered. This reader can’t wait to read more of the adventures of Captain Lacey.

the Hanover Square Affair. This was one of the best mysteries I've read. The authors ability, through her descriptions, puts you right in the scene, experiencing all the sensations of being there. You are kept in suspense thru-out the entire book. Can't wait to read more of the series!

Hanover Square Affair. Excellent story with a lot of truth in it. History tells us of caste system between those who have wealth and those that don’t. It’s still happening in many third world countries. Thank you for writing this grisly murder mystery. G

Blah. I wasn't able to finish the book. It was just too slow for me and it wasn't able to keep my interest.

Historical romances. I really liked the after work that seemed like a new series, A SOUPSCON OF POISON. I will watch for mor of those characters.

Very Different. This book is riveting! I’ve never read another like it. It was not something I would have chosen to read, but found I was sucked in to Captain Lacey’s world. Five stars for sure!

Sleuthing. I very much liked reading about the intemperate Captain sleuthing. It kept me guessing as to what would happen right up to the end.

Mystery. The first chapter or two was hard to get into but after that it was alright. Overall not bad.

Absolutely FABULOUS!. Truly a wonderful book! Engaging, thorough, and suspenseful, The Hanover Square Affair took me only about four hours to read - it was that much of a page-turner! I think I just might be half in love with Captain Lacey, truth be told. I want to wrap him up tight in an embrace and protect (likely from himself!) & take care of him forever. I want him to reconcile with Colonel Brandon, to find true love & have a whole host of kids, and to no longer have to live the way he does in this story, having to scrimp just to buy coal. I believe I am going to go in search of the rest of the Captain Lacey Regency Mysteries!

The Hanover Square Affair. This was a very enjoyable read. While at times a little difficult to follow since I had not read previous stories of Captain Lacey, usually the plot quickly returned to understanding.

A fantastic tale. I loved this book. The plot is fantastic and will keep you guessing till the very end. Captain Lacey is a complex man with more than a few secrets. You just can't help but be drawn into his story. I plan on reading the whole series. I'm so glad I found this!

Hannover Square Affair. Modern theme in a historical context. In some senses Capt. Lacey has a timeless chivalry about him as he solves a brutal abduction of a young woman. A sordid affair that Gardner weaves through the Victorian London streets! A great start to a good series!

Really Excellent Book!. Wow, I definitely enjoyed this book! I got the book from BookBub, which means I paid practically nothing for it. Halfway through, I decided there might be earlier books in the series and went to iBooks to find them. There aren't - but this is the first in a series. I bought the entire series. The characters are well described and believable and the mystery plot is really interesting. The plot twists will have you turning pages as fast as you can. I highly recommend these books to anyone who likes historical mystery or historical fiction.

Couldn't put it down. Excellently written. Engaging characters. Went through the whole series in a couple weeks and am looking forward to the next book. Highly recommend

The Hanover Square Affair. A good easy read!

More than you think. This was a surprise novel for me. It was intense and dark. The story had depth. The characters were flawed and real. They storyline was hard to follow at times. It could have used some editing but over all a good read.

Great story. Great story, I found myself reminded of Dickens. A fabulous tale full of twists and turns to find what happened to two young girls who disappeared on a night out. The writer takes us into the dark depths of London's underworld during the late 1800's. Well written.

Good characters. Captain Lacey is an interesting character. This book and others in the series are well presented with a storyline that will keep you page turning. I am onto my third Captain Lacey.

Clever and intriguing. Terrifically thought-out characters, excellent plots with an interesting historical backdrop. Don't let the cover art put you off. It's an intelligent murder/mystery not a period romance novel.

Jan Vermeer 'The milkmaid' 1661. How nice for Grenville to have the Dutch artiste Vermeer in his house, shame it was touted a century later than actually painted.

Wonderful book. A great book with complex characters, compelling lead characters who have distinctive personalities in a realistic setting. I especially liked the main character, who somehow remained likeable through fits of temper and snap judgments - probably by having the sense to realise when he’s made a mistake. The plot was one of the best of mysteries I have read, each crime given the right consideration for how serious they are - I have read others that simply reference murder and rape for the shock value rather than contextualising them as the horrific crimes they are, this one was great for this. If you are expecting a light hearted fluff piece where a Miss Marple type character bustles through a trivial mystery without gravitas or danger, you probably won’t appreciate this book.

Not recommended. Horrible story no hero, no love story. Just a abduction, rape murders and getting story after. The end .. Thanks for that wasted hours - you can read a book and it can make you feel happy, sad this just leaves you feeling upset with whole story and author ....
