Moby-Dick; or, The Whale is a novel by Herman Melville, first published in 1851. It is considered to be one of the Great American Novels. The story tells the adventures of wandering sailor Ishmael, and his voyage on the whaleship Pequod, commanded by Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon learns that Ahab has one purpose on this voyage: to seek out Moby Dick, a ferocious, enigmatic white sperm whale. In a previous encounter, the whale destroyed Ahab's boat and bit off his leg, which now drives Ahab to take revenge.
In Moby-Dick, Melville employs stylized language, symbolism, and metaphor to explore numerous complex themes. Through the journey of the main characters, the concepts of class and social status, good and evil, and the existence of God are all examined, as the main characters speculate upon their personal beliefs and their places in the universe. The narrator's reflections, along with his descriptions of a sailor's life aboard a whaling ship, are woven into the narrative along with Shakespearean literary devices, such as stage directions, extended soliloquies, and asides. The book portrays destructive obsession and monomania, as well as the assumption of anthropomorphism.

Worst edited book I ever read. The only thing almost as terrible as killing whales is reading this book. Terribly edited book. No idea how this book is considered a classic and no wonder it was deemed a failure when first published.

Because I saw the movies…. If you enjoyed the many versions of this story redone in cinema, then of coarse I’d recommend it. It tells much more of the individual crewman’s stories and mannerisms and of Ahab the captain. The story goes off on many different tangents along the way of seamanship and whale anatomy, but is informative. A long read for me but all and all I’m glad I read it.

Ruin comes in many ways. A great story of destruction on a great animal, ruins the lives of the men that chase glory but find emptiness in there quest.

Not the best book. What I liked about this book was the story of how Ishmael met this former cannibal, and together they sailed on a incredible voyage, all throughout the Pacific, the Indian, and the Atlantic oceans, from north to south. What I didn’t like about this book is their encounters with other ships. Adding all the descriptions of cultures, and whaling ships, definitely not needed. To me, I felt like the book was drawn out to that epic conclusion of Moby Dick sinking their ship. Another thing that I didn’t like was how they didn’t explain how the captain died, the only explain it by saying that he was thrown overboard, off the boat he was on. It’s good to read it once, but never again.

About Author "Herman Melville"

Herman Melville (born Melvill; August 1, 1819 – September 28, 1891) was an American novelist, short story writer, and poet of the American Renaissance period. Among his best-known works are Moby-Dick (1851); Typee (1846), a romanticized account of his experiences in Polynesia; and Billy Budd, Sailor, a posthumously published novella. At the time of his death, Melville was no longer well known to the public, but the 1919 centennial of his birth was the starting point of a Melville revival. Moby-Dick eventually would be considered one of the great American novels. Melville was born in New York City, the third child of a prosperous merchant whose death in 1832 left the family in dire financial straits. He took to sea in 1839 as a common sailor on a merchant ship and then on the whaler Acushnet, but he jumped ship in the Marquesas Islands. Typee, his first book, and its sequel, Omoo (1847), were travel-adventures based on his encounters with the peoples of the islands. Their success....
