A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman Book Summary
Now a major motion picture A Man Called Otto starring Tom Hanks!
#1 New York Times bestseller—more than 3 million copies sold!
Meet Ove. He’s a curmudgeon—the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him “the bitter neighbor from hell.” But must Ove be bitter just because he doesn’t walk around with a smile plastered to his face all the time?
Behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. So when one November morning a chatty young couple with two chatty young daughters move in next door and accidentally flatten Ove’s mailbox, it is the lead-in to a comical and heartwarming tale of unkempt cats, unexpected friendship, and the ancient art of backing up a U-Haul. All of which will change one cranky old man and a local residents’ association to their very foundations.
Fredrik Backman’s beloved first novel about the angry old man next door is a thoughtful exploration of the profound impact one life has on countless others. “If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down” (Booklist, starred review).

Amazing characters. I love this book. A bit rambling at times, but it comes together beautifully.
Underwhelmed. Meh
Heart warming. I loved this book so much!
Want more. A book about life. Beautiful.
A man called Ove. Currently reading this and loving every page!
An absolutely wonderful book.. … as I said, an absolutely wonderful book.
Must read. One of the best books I’ve ever read. And I’m a very serious an avid reader.
A man called ove. Fabulous
Laughter and Tenderness. Ove is a lovable curmudgeon. The story weaves the tale from the past to the present time. You will laugh and cry as Ove discovers the meaning of living.
Tears and laughs. This book left me quickly crying on a plane. I was drawn in by the grumpy observations of a simple old man and had my heart wretched by beautiful human connection
John. I loved this book. The author is a wise and gifted at creating complex & deeply flawed characters whom you will grow to love.
Loved Ove!. Wonderful book!
Love this book!. Best book I’ve read in a while…the characters are amazing as the author brings them to life. Loved this book!
Emotional roller coaster. Let’s just say I cried through the last 5 or 6 chapters. No wonder Fredrik Backman became so well known for this book!
A man called Ove. Brilliant. Heartfelt story. Most men will be able to relate to Ove somewhat or someone like him. He is your worst nightmare as an HOA president though!
Fabulous. A must read. Couldn’t put it down.
Good book 💕. A story of love and unlikely friendships, where houses and cars symbolize the character of the people who own them. Characters I will remember fondly.
Gets interesting towards the end. A bit too slow and way too detailed for my taste, especially in the beginning. I had to skip through a few chapters. But even as I did, the humor jumped out.
Great. This was a heart warming book. Loved every second of it.
Simple and so profound. Beautiful and meaningful
Heartwarming and Uplifting. What a touching story about humanity and love. It will warm your heart as you speed through this book. You can’t put it down. Not surprised it’s set to be a movie!
Incredibly moving read….. One of the best works of fiction I have read. A truly touching and heart rending story, with a breadth of knowledge and insight into humanity, grief, love, and hope.
Didn’t care for it. I was really hoping to like this book. Most reviews are great. I couldn’t get into it. The writing was good but the story line didn’t grab or keep me. I got through 2/3 of the book and gave up. I really wanted to like this one!
Loved it!. All the feelings! This is an absolutely fabulous story.
Delightful and moving. A wonderful tale of a man….
EXCELLENT READ. This was by far the best novel that I have read to date. I literally felt like I was one of the neighbors that lived in that row of houses. I actually laughed and I cried. I enjoyed every bit of this book!
Loved every second. Beautiful and touching! Worth the read!!
Ove. A well written character study with a cast of fascinating characters.
All the Feels. This book had me laughing, crying, caring and understanding! It’s very rare that a book keeps you so entertained and emotionally invested. So worth reading!
A Man Called Ove. Great story, woven together with clues about what happens. Laugh, cringe, cry! Respected Ove, his deeds spoke much louder then his words.
Marvelous and original. Can a grief filled, socially inept man who only wants to end his life find any salvation in human relationships almost at his doorstep? Can any of this be the basis of an incredibly heartwarming and continuously humorous story? You will enjoy the wit, the characters and the slow build towards the inevitable. A truly original piece of work.
A Man Called Ove. After reading this book I need to read everything from this author. He is just too good!
Incredible book. This is by far the only book that cracked me up and burst me in tears.Great story that makes you think about your relationship. I totally recommend this book ,don’t miss this masterpiece
Great story!. Oh my gosh, I laughed, I cried. A must read. Hope I remember to read it again some years down the road.
A great book. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Hard to believe a book about suicide can be both hilarious and heartwarming.
Mr Cranky Pants. I laughed. I cried. I had an urge to buy a Saab.
Moving. Touching, funny, tragic, heartwarming.
Touching.. I had a really hard time getting into this book at first. Took about 10 chapters. It’s VERY descriptive. If you can understand that Ove is very much autistic, then it helps it get better. The love story of him & Sonja reminded me of the Disney movie UP. The end had me crying. All in all very good read.
As unconventional as it is endearing. An unconventional read. Laborious at times, but held together by endearing characters. Ove is a reminder that there is more to people than meets the eye. And one that navigates a triumphant arc of love as it overcomes loss.
A classic.. I never would have thought that I’d read a book from start to end with a box of tissue by my side. This book is definitely a favorite from here on after. Double thumbs up dont give it justice at all. It is a must read!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. My dad would have liked this book..When the writer can make you laugh and cry in the same manuscript I think he has done his job admirably. And I’m more of a dog person really but I like this cat.
An unexpected delight. A true feel good story that burrows into you before you know it and takes you along for a marvelous ride
Yes.. Just yes 🙌
Slow plot. Not my favorite read, while the book was beautifully written, I found the plot line slow and uninteresting.
Perfect. What can I say? It’s wonderful! Read for yourself.
My new favorite book!. It made me laugh (harder than I can ever remember), it made me cry (harder than I have in a long time). It’s truly touching and delightful.
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. This book will touch your heart in ways you did not know you needed.
My heart is full.. I had the biggest dumbest smile slapped across my face reading the last few chapters of this book. Even found myself kicking with glee at some parts. This book is excellent—heartwarming, funny, equal parts light and heavy. You will feel so many things. But most importantly, it will make your heart feel full.
Outstanding!. This book was written with so much meaning! I loved every minute of it! I laughed out loud and cried a lot too. It is such a meaningful story and I really thought all the characters were amazing. This author is awesome! I felt like I knew all the characters personally. Loved this book!!!!!!!
An Amazing Journey. A Man Called Ove captures the essence of the grief Ove goes through after losing the love of his life. The story takes us through his ups and downs as he realizes that maybe, it’s not the end of the world yet. A tremendous read that I’d recommend to anyone.

A Man Called Ove. What a delightful book this was! I found all of the characters so "real" that I was sad to have it come to an end. Will be one I will reread in the future.
I’ve. Wonderful book, laughed throughout, have known more than one man who sounds like Ove.
Warms your heart. It took me a bit to get into this book as Ove's character was unfolding, but the way little pieces were given about his life and his past, it had me in tears multiple times. A charming story that reminds you of people In your own life, what's important, and what is beautiful about relationships when you let yourself open up.
Great read. This book was one of our better book club picks! It was sad, funny and food for thought. Loved Ove and all his quirky ways! I would recommend this book.
A man called Ove. I can't say enough about this book!!! I absolutely loved it!! Do yourself a favor a read it! I didn't want it to end.
Not my favorite. Slow and predictable. 2 chapters in and I knew how it would develop and end.
One of the best books I've ever read!!. It's an absolutely amazing book! I couldn't put it down
Grumpier old man. Different style of writing. Found I could read in brief spurts a still enjoy the book.
Ove. Possibly the best book I’ve ever read. Well actually I borrowed the audiobook I love to hear Mr. Backman’s words.
Great Read. Just read it. You will not be sorry. Fantastic read.
A great read. My father was Swedish - and Ove has may of his traits: impatient, opinionated, quick to anger, and intolerant of fools and drivers who followed too closely. He would also be the first person to help fix anything broken. As I read this marvelous book I recognized my father — and myself! I share those same traits. Fortunately I also recognized my eagerness to reach out to people in need, to work hard, and to be honest. This was one of those books that I wanted to go on and on …. I'd laugh while reading one page - and then hold back some tears a few pages later. This is a book that will touch your heart — and if it does not - I will worry about you.
A Man Called Ove. An incredibly endearing book- couldn't help myself and read it 3 times.
Wonderful Story. This book is by far my favorite. Worth a read for sure!
Not my usual genre. I connected immediately to Ove and enjoyed every page. I laughed....often. And I cried. Great book. Definitely read!
A Man Called Ove. Just wonderful. I laughed out loud and cried more than once. If you are not a complete idiot, read this book. Please.
A Man Named Ove. This book was easy to read, I loved Ove’s personality.
It’s in awful shape, due to lack of editing.. This book was pretty funny and probably just about anyone can relate to dealing with someone like Ove. The problem is in the lack of editing- what a mess. I cannot believe Simon & Schuster allowed this to go to press in such condition. The tense constantly flip flops between past and present, even sometimes, in the same sentence so it's very distracting, hindering the reading process. Another example of the poor editing is as Ove converses with another person, this person is a 'he' one minute and a 'she' the next. No continuity and causes more confusion. I couldn't bring myself to finish it, despite enjoying the content. If they couldn't be bothered with producing a professional book, it doesn't deserve my attention.
A man called ove. I loved everything about this book, writing style and characters. The unraveling of the story kept me intrigued. I couldn't put it down and was terribly sad when reading it came to an end.
Best. I don't often give books a good review. So much junk out there. This book, wow, put down whatever your reading and read this book. It's human !
Great Story!. This story surprised me with its depth of characters, hysterical moments, and how well the story of this grouchy old man unfolds. Such a wonderful, fulfilling read. Such an endearing character. We all need a neighbor like Ove in our lives.
Satisfying yet sweet. This book is like smooshing the movies Up and Gran Torino and throwing into suburban Sweden. Loved it!
Get ready to laugh and cry. I read this book over a year ago, and yet when someone mentions "good books", I always come up with this one. I know that I've literally read hundreds of books, yet this has a special place for me. It may be that we all know an 'Ove'.
A Man Called Ove. Read in 3 sittings, 1 of which was in the bar while my husband was away and I grinned and tittered at bits. The next day I cried. Beautiful read. We can all relate in some way I think to the characters and you do feel yourself cringing at the complete 'un-PC' vocabulary which makes it all the more real.
Ova. Reading this book was a dichotomy of emotions, sadness, joy, fear, laughter. We all know someone like Ova, and we may even become Ova. One of those books which makes you sad when you are nearing the end, because it will run out of pages...
So much fun!. I am not an avid reader. I stumbled upon this book and just could not put it down. I really enjoyed the way the story was told. The writer takes the reader through fun-to-follow paths in any given chapter. This book was worth the investment of my time.
Simply..... Simply delightful, simply enchanting, simply wonderful.
Excellent. This book really drew me in. I've been doing a book club for over a year and this is the first one that I finished. The story is so pure and real. Everyone either knows a character like Ove or can relate to him.
Amazing!!!. This is one of the most amazing books. I laughed. I cried. Ove is the most lovable unlovable character I have ever read. It is a great read!
Excellent Book. I throughly enjoyed sharing int the ups and downs of Ove's life. He reminded me of bits and pieces of various people that I've known while serving in the military. He is a character that you can't help but fall in love with as he shares his view of the world that constantly changes around him. Ove is a great example of how love can rejuvenate a dead spirit. I absolutely loved this book!
Better. Not at all what I expected. Much better!
Great book. What a wonderful book. Hard to put down.
A man called Ove. Lovely story of compassion, forgiveness, and patience. A lesson for every person to look beyond judgement and display empathy.
Best!. Wonderful book!
A Man Called Ove. Charming and funny. I smiled through the entire read. It will be some time before I read another book so quickly. A 5 star for sure.
Must Read. I fell in love with the characters. This book was beyond amazing. I will be reading it again before the year is done.
A Man Callled Ove. A charming book. What a character Ove was.
A Man Called Ove. Shows how simple caring and not just assuming that a person is what they seem outwardly can bring a joy and new life for all being touched- there is always a back story behind how a person is.
I laughed, I cried.... I started off slowly with this book but I'm so glad I stuck with it. The pace and the tone seemed to escalate their way to the perfect ending. A funny and heartwarming send up to curmudgeonly virile men of an older generation. I am buying this for my father and step father tomorrow.
A man called ove. Loved this
A Man Called Ove. I loved this book and the wonderful characters in it! Wow! I was skeptical at first, but am glad I continued to read. What an outstanding treat I will never forget! Ove's wife -- the love of his life -- knew she had a jewel in the rough. Maybe because of her father, she could see beneath the silent and seemingly grumpy exterior. Wish everyone had the patience to see beyond the artificial images people judge others by. Great book!!
Unforgettable & Quirky!. It's a delightful tale that is both sad and happy.
A Book Worth Life. One of the best books I have yet to read. Worth 5 stars, the sky, and the life beyond!
Great biok. It’s just a really good book, it tugs at your heart strings in a way you wouldn’t expect and Ove is really funny.
A must read!!. Best book I have read since All the light.. And Anne Tyler. Just amazing!! I think I will read it again, I miss the story already.
Ove Grew On Me. At first I had a hard time getting into the book. But after about four chapters in I started feeling sympathetic for him and just kept reading until I found that I had a very hard time even putting the book down! I don't cry often in books but this one had me in tears at the end!!
Enjoyed immensely. What a great read. This Ove character really grows on you..grumpiness and all. Loved the characters, the interactions and the way it wrapped up at the end. An influential book that's liable to live on long after reading it.
Amazing. I didn't want to keep reading, because I didn't want the story to end. So many characteristics of Ove made me laugh and cry as they were comparable to my dad, and other men of his generation. One of the best books I have ever read!
Very Touching. What can I say other than a very touching story. It is very well written, descriptive so one can easily visualize everything, and easy read. But most of all it is just touching.
A Man Called Ove. This book kept me guessing. In part because of events I didn’t see coming. In part , due to difficulty adjusting to the writing style. There were some parts I wish I could delete all together; but mostly, it was a slow build leading to a satisfying gift at the end. Well worth the journey!
Delightful and poignant. One of the most delightful reads in a long time. Made me want to go out and buy a Saab!
