Ken Follett's extraordinary historical epic, the Century Trilogy, reaches its sweeping, passionate conclusion.

In Fall of Giants and Winter of the World, Ken Follett followed the fortunes of five international families—American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh—as they made their way through the twentieth century. Now they come to one of the most tumultuous eras of all: the 1960s through the 1980s, from civil rights, assassinations, mass political movements, and Vietnam to the Berlin Wall, the Cuban Missile Crisis, presidential impeachment, revolution—and rock and roll.

East German teacher Rebecca Hoffmann discovers she’s been spied on by the Stasi for years and commits an impulsive act that will affect her family for the rest of their lives. . . . George Jakes, the child of a mixed-race couple, bypasses a corporate law career to join Robert F. Kennedy's Justice Department and finds himself in the middle of not only the seminal events of the civil rights battle but a much more personal battle of his own. . . . Cameron Dewar, the grandson of a senator, jumps at the chance to do some official and unofficial espionage for a cause he believes in, only to discover that the world is a much more dangerous place than he'd imagined. . . . Dimka Dvorkin, a young aide to Nikita Khrushchev, becomes an agent both for good and for ill as the United States and the Soviet Union race to the brink of nuclear war, while his twin sister, Tanya, carves out a role that will take her from Moscow to Cuba to Prague to Warsaw—and into history.

Ken Follett Trilogy. Just this moment finished the third. Truly a great read. Not sure there is anything that can equal this piece of work.

Johnny 5 par

Fun, completely wrongheaded, fictional account of the fall of militant communism. Follet will be a great spokesman for the non militant form of communism currently gaining steam in the US. The new propagandistic form of media will applaud this revisionist history.

Tsmdav

Edge of Eternity. I've read all three books in the series, and found them all very readable. An author has a right to inject their political views into anything they write and in Follet's case his liberal perspective is obvious, especially in this final volume. If your politics are liberal you'll find every thing you need to support the liberal narrative, if your conservative, beware: you might find yourself throwing your phone at the wall out of frustration.(Little things like calling Ronald Reagan a mass murderer, etc.)

Emotionally Disturbed

The Edge of Eternity. Once again Follet has delivered an astounding account of the era of segregation in the USA. As a Republican I did not care for his comments from that period. Yes. Nixon was an evil man but don’t color us all as evil. I did my student teaching in a predominantly black school, and loved the children as my own. During my teen years, I brought a group of my swimming pals home. One was black! My mother was shocked but I didn’t see the difference.

Tokee555

Edge of Eternity. I finished this book purely out of a sense of duty, but I couldn't wait to turn the last page and put it down. Way too preachy, historically inaccurate and wildly time after time, and the characters were flat, poorly developed, and tiresome.

Muscleguydc

Another great book!. I enjoyed this book as much as the previous two books. I also learned more world history. The book brought back memories of where I was when history was in the making.

IbisF8

A great conclusion. I enjoyed all three books of the trilogy immensely. Having the viewpoint of the different families and having them intertwined now and then was a wonderful device onto which to weave the world's history. I found I could not put any of them down. Wishing there was a fourth book to read.....

FG900

Wonderfully written. As someone who enjoys historical fiction, this is one of the all time greats!! Bravo!

Cvmike

Slanted history. Boring stories, complicated families and way too many pages of useless verbiage. This is not up to his usual high standard. Complete waste of time.

Annaleu

Revisionist in part. Powerful writing but definitely slanted to favor a political viewpoint instead of historical perspective. I Wonder if this author also had a thrill up his leg and if he now feels duped as so many of us do.

PROSPERITYDEE

Love. One of my favorite!

NJSGuitar

Loved it!. Not only is this a terrific story line, I enjoyed the historical detail. Book was total entertainment and enlightenment! Eager to read the next one!

Trilogy of ken follett. The books were interesting however too many characters too many switching of characters. Too much background not essential

Art Hudson

Edge Of Eternity. Overall a good read. I was very disappointed as the story progressed into the Reagan Era. That is when the author showed his true liberal/progressive colors. To make the point at the end that Ronald Reagan had no influence on ending the Cold War is laughable. Dwelling on Iran-contra at the expense of Reagan's "tear down this wall" speech is lamentable. Good story teller overall but a lousy historian.

Audrey Hassell

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. The best series I have read in a long time!!! I could not put the books down!!

Edge of Eternity. This is book three of the trilogy. Very powerful story. I couldn’t put it down.

A7-X

Edge of eternity. Great read

The STAZ

Snore. I can't believe I wasted my time reading this. Not only was it boring, it was so politically biased that no one would ever see it as historical. Jimmy Carter is seen as a savior and Ronald Reagan is referred to as a mass murderer. I lived through all of this and I can't see how anyone could find this book interesting or believable.

B Stelter CNN

Irrelevant. Follett should have stopped at WWII. No attempt at objectivity here. And that diminishes his earlier works in my mind. Too bad

Solmosalar

VERY DISAPPOINTING!. After thoroughly enjoying the first two books in this excellent historical novel trilogy (I would highly recommend them), I naturally purchased the third, EDGE OF ETERNITY. It was a mistake. I’m ~130 pages into it, and so far it is mostly about adolescent sexual adventures, sex with JFK, and detailed multi-page accounts of sex & more sex. Frankly, I’m really not so sure that this last book in the series was written by the same author of the first two books. Very disappointing, as I have enjoyed so many of the works of Ken Follett over decades. Don’t waste your money.

Off the deep end. Clap trap

Outstanding and moving historical fiction. I'm so happy an Italian friend mentioned finishing this trilogy and how moved he was by it which sparked my interest. The thread between the families and the continents was amazing and many thanks to Ken Follett for filling in the gaps that were missing in my US history books. Every American should read this engaging story of the 20th Century.

Lopsidednugget1234

Amazing, captivating, incredible. Follett's finest work yet in the century trilogy.

Alan513894520

Edge of Eternity. Liked his other books but his hate for any Republican leadership in the US and his strong bias made this difficult to read and take seriously.

Former fan 7757

Hit job on Reagan and Bush. Stop reading after the second book unless you enjoy liberal fantasy pretending to be historical fiction. RIP Ronald Reagan. Shame on you kenny f. Very small of you and sad for your former fans.

Excellent!. Follett is remarkable. Learning about 20th Century history through the eyes of multigenerational families from all over the world is a profound experience. If you've loved his previous works, you will love this even more because you lived through some of this history. The negative reviews that I read prior to this purchase were alarming and in the end unfounded. Excellent. Brilliant.

I remember.... I am a baby boomer, born in the great State of Maine. My memories of presidents and elections and conflicts, truly began with the election of John Fitzgerald Kennedy in 1960. This was a real big deal for me; he was young, handsome, articulate and made me feel confident and secure in my world. JFK's murder devastated me. My belief in Kennedy, the U.S.A. and the future was affected even unto this day as I write. Nikita Khrushchev was a scary person. Pounding on a table with his shoe, was darkly comedic. Martin Luther King and the entire civil rights problems were unknown in Maine. I think there was one black family in our town. Vietnam, Germany, and the USSR, were strange far away places that were meaningless to me. Ken Follett has taught me much about the world I was living in and about the people that shared that world. The historical events, the people who were news makers, the people who died, have become real to me. I am very thankful to Follett for helping me understand my life. The 20th Century Trilogy is remarkable and teaches in an entertains way. I particularly loved this final installment because it was my time. What a wonderful experience for future generations to have this series to understand why they are living the way they are living.

Edge of Eternity. Amazing! The Century Triliogy was a profound reading experience.

How did an editor signed off on this?. Follet fails both as a historian and as a novelist with this piece. Blunt characters, sanctimonious if leftist, right out creeps or criminals if right-leaning, the subplots are predictable, unexciting and inconclusive. Worst, he engages in historical revisionism strictly following ideology lines. This was actually announced in Winter of the World, where we saw a total minimization of Churchill's role in WWII. But he takes this to the edge of reason in this volume. Reagan is portrayed exclusively as a mass murderer, and surprisingly is even made fun of for the suggestion that he took undue credit for his role on the fall of the Berlin Wall. Fall of communism had nothing to do with the West's pressure, it was entirely an internal process (and we are fools to believe otherwise). Mr Follet, who had done a much nicer job when setting his stories in the distant past, was not able to take a step back when writing contemporary history. He did it at his own peril: he lost our respect as a novelist and as a historian. A sad result for a writer who specializes in historical fiction.

SophieBergdolt2

Century Trilogy. An extraordinary series with exquisite detail to history and to characters. Sad to see it come to an end.

Ojeda1234567

Edge of Eternity. This was by far the sappiest piece of trash that I've ever read. That this usually entertaining author would stoop to use his reputation to foist upon the paying public his own political views dressed up as a novel reveals him to be a craven and greedy fraud. An honest writer would have presented his politics in his own voice as commentary in the many available venues. Not by tricking readers as has been done here. As a result every character suffers from a total lack of any aura of authenticity. Shame on the publishers as well for breaking the bond of trust with the reading public. Don't waste your money or time on this rubbish of writing.

JoanLS

Drivel. I enjoyed the first two books in the trilogy but got half way in this book and could not finish it. Racist, anti-American, anti-conservative, very liberal and just very uninteresting. Switching back and forth among so many different characters made for much confusion. I finally decided life is too short to waste time on this book. Sorry I spent the money.

The Trilogy is Over!. There were times where is was a little slow but others where I could not wait to get to the next chapter! I will miss these characters!

Effgumm

Edge of Eternity. Thoroughly researched and beautifully crafted story. Covering majorhistorical events seen through the eyes of believable protagonists kept me up many nights. One quibble: the Iran hostage crisis of 1979 to me represents a major turning point in Middle East-US relations. The scene with the botched assassination attempt had more shock value to the reader, but while horrible, is not on the same level in terms of global impact as the other events in the trilogy.

Mare Schwartz

Trilogy. One word...Excellent!

Skorned

Masterful. The best tellers of history are the perspectives of people who lived it. Today, more than ever, separating fact from fiction has become more about persuasion than argument. The interwoven stories of families builds understanding and empathy. A masterful series

Ghon_fishin

Epic In Every Aspect. One of the best reads I have ever encountered. A master stroke of fiction interspersed with history. Or quite possibly, the other way around. The flow from start to finish throughout the entire trilogy is done near flawlessly. Every character is connected in a very easy to follow, yet wonderfully complex storyline. You will not find a dull moment in this entire three book collection. A must read for fiction lovers and history buffs alike. Just simply great writing.

Gint

Disappointing. I loved the first two installments of this trilogy but this one reads like little more than a love letter to liberal philosophies, a caricaturization of any politician to the right of far-left, and an absolutely ludicrous depiction of Ronald Reagan as little more than a war criminal without any acknowledgement of his role in the fall of the USSR. Follett' was a little too obvious in this one.

Steely1954

Straw men abound. Unlike the Pillars of the Earth trilogy, The Century trilogy was written to a very narrow audience with a complete socialist bias, especially the American narrative. The British storyline was only marginally better. The first book was decently written, but it became an international soap opera thereafter. The only cogent explanation in books 2-3 was the downfall from within of Communism, and even that was selectively written. All American Democrats are good or at least well meaning, and all Republicans were racists and mass murderers. I know there is an ignorant minority on both sides that espouse such black and white views, but I expected better from Follett and was sorely disappointed.

Dsmith950

Very good book. Kind of like Forrest Gump, but with an ensemble cast. Traces European and American history through the 20th century, enlivening it with characters whose lives intersect in interesting ways. Very well written, I enjoyed all three books and looked forward to being able to read them.

Night Ranger rocks

Liberal take on history. Obviously a very liberal take on history which is very disappointing given how much I have enjoyed his other books. Don’t think I’ll be giving him any more of my money if this liberal drivel is what I am going to be reading.

Slsbl77

Excellent finish. Another Follett triumph. Pullers of the Earth started and this finished. Amazing writer exploring history, facts and fiction intertwined to keep the reader wanting to read just one more page. Great read.

Aichessgee

Proud to be an American. As I sit here with tears streaming down my face from finishing this book, I am overwhelmed with the fact that I am grateful to not only be an American but to have been born in 1974 so that I have witnessed so many of the great things that have occurred within the scope of this book. It is particularly poignant to me, as I live in the area where Jacky Jakes lives. All of the details of the DC area are something I experience on a daily basis. This has been a great series of books. I am sad to see them end.

MarthaJane

Edge of Eternity. Started great but lapsed into a slanted rant against all things conservative or Republican. I cannot believe the cheap shot he took at Condoleeza Rice or his total denial of Ronald Reagan's contribution to the end of the Cold War. Mr. Follet is a very talented writer, but his ideology clouds his writings.

NoBrainerToMe

Edge of Eternity. Follet is a great story teller mixing in history with fictional characters. He took the baby killing too far in Vietnam as heroes fought in and sacrificed there lives, limbs and minds. He did not try to conceal his hatred of Reagan. Reagan is a hero to many Americans. He bucked his constituents in taking on Gorbachev while setting the table for the eventual take down of the Berlin Wall. His economic policy in cutting taxes also set the table for recovering the economy after Carter allowed ungodly interest rates and inflation with his policies. Follet’s hero, Obama, took our nation backwards with racism back to the 1950’s. If you’re into romance novels you will love this book as he could make some romance novelists blush. As usual, he championed strong women, which is great but he also championed gay rights which was unnecessary. I give his writing ability a 5, and his content a 2, thus an overall 3.5.

Fignewtonian

Edge of Eternity. This is a leftist's fever dream, and it was actually embarrassing to read. Stilted dialogue from cartoonish characters, revisionist history, and Follett's agenda hitting you in the face every single page combine to make one the worst reading experiences I've ever had. I wish I could get my money back, because it is infuriating that my purchase is tacitly endorsing such a twisted interpretation of conservatism. Plus this was just a truly terrible, poorly written book.

MWhisenand

Well, I Read All Three. It was a bit tedious but I got through it.

Careon

This Era. I enjoyed the first two books much more. I think that has to with the fact that I lived the third book and there was nothing I didn't know. If you don't know much about the civil rights movement and the Berlin Wall this would be a very worthwhile read.

Not quite as good as first two. Good, but not as good as the first two books of the series. To much one aided political commentary in this book.

Edge of Eternity. Perceptive and historically accurate. A very strong final volume to this trilogy.

A great conclsuion!. Once again I had a diffuclt time putting down the book. While I didn’t find it as much of a page turner as the first two books in the trilogy I found myself unable to leave the book alone for any length of time. - The family histories introduced in “Fall of Giants” and “Winter of the World” provide continuity in context with world affairs during the Cold War. An excellent book for someone who came of age during that period of time. Thank you, Ken Follett for capturing my imagination and interest in world politics! Well written and so insightful.

Rose.iPad

Definitely did not disappoint!. I'm a huge fan of Ken Follett and have absolutely loved everything I've read that he's written. The conclusion to this trilogy certainly didn't fall short of my expectations. Definitely worth reading!

Owl 42

The Edge Of Eternity. This is the third book in author Ken Follet's Century Trilogy. Follet chronicles the events of the 20th century through the lives of several families in Europe, England and the United States in a way that offers both wonderful reading and a living sense of the events of our recent past. The Wing of Eternity brings his trilogy to a satisfying end while inviting the reader into our 21 st century story with a greater understanding. All three volumes make fine reading combined with growing insight into events that have shaped our lives.

Winter of the Worlds. I have patiently waited for each series of this trilogy to be published and was never disappointed. the history is riveting, the progression of each family's struggles, beliefs, and conviction kept me reading. I just finished reading the last book, Edge of Eternity with tears rolling down my face. Once I started reading the Fall of Giants - I could not put these books down!! Excellent read!

Not up to Follett standards. I am a big Ken Follett and eagerly anticipate each new book. While I would certainly recommend Edge of Eternity, it did not immediately capture and keep my attention like his previous novels. Maybe it was his rough handling of people I consider heroes, or perhaps because I was constantly trying to keep the large cast of characters straight. Regardless of the reason, I was glad to finally reach the end and hope his next novel will concentrate on a different era.

M McCarty

Edge of Eternity. This book is below the standards of the two previous books of the trilogy. While reading the first two books, I did not want the stories to end; sadly Edge of Eternity falls flat. The dialogue is boring: He said this, She said that, He said .....etc. The characters are nondescript: He did this...She did that...He did......etc. As I read the book, I get the impression that the writing is by two different authors because the writing doesn't flow and the story and characters are not developed. However, like the first two trilogy books, Edge of Eternity is a synopsis of historical events. All in all, just OK.

Jotufl

Edge of eternity. Follet really went off the rails with this one. He ruined the ending to a good series.

MaDelBecc

Disappointing. Like most others, I've been waiting for the last installment. The beginning of the book was well written. However, as it went on it felt rushed. There are some characters that are developed and then just abandoned. Very disappointed. I don't mind the leftist leaning, but it did feel like Follett wrote it with Zinn.

Bd789

What a disappointment. I usually enjoy Follett's but his "hate America" bias was a huge disappointment. It's a shame he painted the country that has enriched him so in such a negative way. This will be the last book of his I ever buy.

MrHMuse

Backdrop. I truly enjoyed this book because it was set during the backdrop of my personal life. I was born in 1950 and grew up as much of this story unfolded, this non-fiction part of the story. It was like someone was writing a parallel story to my own life. I've also enjoyed the entire trilogy for similar reasons in that it takes place in the recent historical background of my life. Engaging characters that tell us about our contemporary history by living their lives. Great stuff!

PointSilly

Awesome. Mesmerising till the end...I couldn't keep it down...well done Mr Follett

Yulia Pravnik

Amazing. Read all three in the trilogy in a short time frame, couldn't put it down. Bittersweet when it ended. Highly recommend to lovers of historical fiction.

TechEdit1

Edge of Eternity. I almost did not buy this book because of all the negative reviews. I enjoyed this every bit as much as the other two in this series. A great refresher course of history. After following the families in the last two books, it would be a shame not to read this one.

JoshWms

Edge of Eternity. I loved the first two of the trilogy but the Edge of Eternity takes a very hard turn to the left while diminishing the USA's role in destroying communism by leaving out important facts. Follett is better than that.

Wisknitcat

Preachy. Not as good as the first two books. The characters were too predictable and had no real development. Follett has a strange way of treating sex. I didn't think there was too much sex as some reviewers stated but his descriptions are just not sexy and he seems a bit preoccupied with women's hair(down there).

Randy Dean

What a disappointment. This book was painful to finish, having read the first two installments of the trilogy I've truly enjoyed this tale until I got to this book. The first two took an interesting twist of following the development of the 20th century, interweaving various families throughout history to tell the story. This third installment however diverged greatly, having descended into a blithely cynical and highly partisan fairy tale of the late 20th century. Jimmy Carter was a cold warrior and Ronald Reagan a mass murderer, in Follett's blathering hallucinations. This story was toxically filled with the author's blatant partisanship in a horrid attempt to portray conservatives as nothing but dumb hate mongers and criminals. I've read Follett's books for years - this will be my last.

Follett Fan

Good, not great. Far too much left leaning portrayal of the 60s - 90's and way too much sex. If you are a conservative politico, you will hate it. Overall a good read.

BigFanOfIt

Follett has done it again!. Edge of Eternity is a wonderful wrap up the the Century Trilogy. This is a story that needed to be told in the format for which it was written. The entire trilogy is a must read!

FreeAgency

Forrest Gump was a flaming liberal?. Talk about a letdown. After slogging through the Century Trilogy, profound disappointment is the only way to describe my feelings after clicking through the last page. I guess Ken Follett has reached a level of success that permits him to dispense with any notion of even-handedness in his"interpretation" of history. What a crock. Let's start with Forrest Gumpiness of this entire plot line where all the characters just happened to be in the center of each significant historical event portrayed and yet knew each other. What is the probability of such a set of circumstances? Probably as low as a conservative getting fair treatment in Follett's tortured screed. The implausibility of it all hovers over the entire book and suggests the author simply ran out of gas in this final installment and lazily played connect the dots with 20th century historical events that enabled him to weave his tale of socialist utopia. Oy vey. As an avid fan of his earlier efforts - Pillars of the Earth and World Without End - I cannot comprehend how the man who penned these epic tales created this stinky pile of trite cliches. Throughout the Trilogy, all the heroes are liberal democrats or their equivalents in other countries. Republicans are evil by definition, on par with the totalitarian communist states. All whites are racists and the only truly good journalists are those that expose the evils of Republican administrations. Good grief - where is the subtlety of the earlier efforts? I guess all the success has caused a serious case of liberal white guilt and this is the author's mea culpa and play for salvation. Hey, here's a novel idea. 😊 Why don't you focus on writing books entertaining enough to justify the $60 I shelled out for this junk. You are in the entertainment business after all. So entertain us and save your political crap for the campaign trail or the opinion columns. Good riddance.

Sailor_boy

Another excellent read.... ...you know what the story is going to give you and you're still excited, page after page. This was a great read and I recommend it to everyone. GREAT BOOK!!!!

Say-Say Jane

Edge of Eternity. A really bad book, poorly written and researched. If I could get my money back I would. Historically inaccurate, perhaps written by a ghost writer. I sure hope so, or it's the last book I read by this author.

Pawahl

Disappointed with this one. I have read most of Follett's novels, but this one was a disappointment. Makes all liberals look like heroes and conservatives as the enemy. If you are writing historical fiction, it would help to be politically independent.

Guy from Garbow

Terrific. A great trilogy! You must read the first two books. Ken Follet has done it again. A masterpiece of literature.

Cmhelbig

Dissappointed. I have been huge fan of all Mr. Follett's novels, and I eagerly anticipated the release of the last in the trilogy. However, I was dissappointed and saddened to learn of his anti-conservative, liberal revisionist garbage. Ronald Reagan had nothing to do with ending the Cold War??? Really??? All Republicans are made to look like greedy, self-serving, lying war mongers. And shredding the constitution???? No one can hold a candle to the current administration. Too bad Mr. Follet ended the book in 2008 and ignored the last six years. I don't care what race the president is; his policies are destroying this country to the extent I hardly recognize it. Thanks to him our health care system is in ruins, there are close to 100 million people out of work, 4 Americans died during the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi (oh, sorry, it was a video????--at least no one died because of Watergate), he is about to grant amensty to to millions of illegals, etc. etc. etc. etc. I truly hope that in the future Mr. Follett sticks to what he does best--write historically accurate and interesting novels that you can't wait to turn the page to see what happens next. It was hard to get through this one. And he can leave all the sex out too...

Acholok

Crap from start to finish. Enough said.

Landan o

Great fiction bad history. I love follett and ha be read most of his books. This final installment in the trilogy was entertaining and at times enlightening. Two glaring issues which I believe both liberals and conservatives would agree on: 1) follett's conservative characters are not just misguided, they are all evil, sexually perverted creeps who frequently comment on how evil they know they are acting. That's 45% of the country represented there. 2) follett skips over the carter administration, not the democratic party's finest hour, as well as covers the reagan administration in record time. He then gives the credit for the end of communism to Gorbachev. This is a pretty radical take on history, and should be backed up with more than the last chapter of the book. I felt cheated by this third book. Great author but not a good finish.

Sebastian García

The best history class!. Anyone who wants to understand what happened in the world during the past century has to read Follett's trilogy and this last chapter is simply amazing!

Super Clock

Edge of Eternity. Too long, boring and very opinionated.

BigB 74

A bit of a let down after the first two books. This is my first time reading any Follett book or series. My father passed along Fall of Giants to me and I thought that book was very entertaining and also a bit informative concerning different points of view competing with one another around the globe during world war one. The second book in the trilogy was just as entertaining. This is the third and final book so I was really looking forward to seeing how the author would wrap things up. Perhaps I built it up too much...but I have to say I was slightly disappointed with this last installment. The only exception to the disappointment is the storyline which tracks the civil rights movement in the 60's and its main protagonist. That storyline did not disappoint. I have noticed that many people are put off by the sex in this novel (as well as the previous two books). I have to say I did not find that aspect overwhelming or vulgar. It added to the story and was done tastefully in my opinion. If you don't like reading books with storylines which include sex, however, you should avoid this series of books. One last thing...others have noted the author is terribly biased in his point of view. That is true in a subtle way in the first two books...and a very obvious way in the final installment. I am a libertarian, however, and I am used to pretty much every author having a bias that rubs me the wrong way in some manner. So I enjoyed trilogy of stories for what it was: An interesting story of the last century as seen through the eyes of someone who thinks socialism and left wing politics is good...and who thinks anything to the right of socialism (especially Republicans from the USA) is "stupid, ignorant, and evil." He also portrays American soldiers in Vietnam as butchers who basically just ran roughshod through that country murdering, raping and killing men, women and children. I found that portrayal a bit offensive...and I will say that it is inaccurate based on my conversations with my father and his friends with which he served in the Vietnam war. I have also spoken to many Vietnamese immigrants whom I represent in my capacity as an attorney...every single one of them made me promise that I would say "thank you" to my father for trying to help their country during that war. So there is another side to what the author presents. But if my Dad could get past his bias to hear his tale, I figured I could do the same. Overall, however, I did not let the author's political bias get in the way of my enjoyment of the rest of the stories. I would recommend reading this series overall...especially when the price to do so comes down to around $5 per book. The stories concerning WW I and WW II are worth it alone. THe third installment is sort of like Godfather III. You can skip it, but if you're really bored or looking for a book to read on vacation, you might as well see how it ends. I plan on reading some of his other novels now that I have gotten through these as several people have rated them very highly.

Cimmerian2

Howard Zinn plus bad sex scenes. Wow. Worse writing than prior two, which were no "Pillars" either. Wooden characters and dialogue. And the slanderous bias against the right was just over the top. Bad writing I could maybe take. Gross bias I could maybe take. Together, unbearable. An embarrassment.

A World History. This epic trilogy was tremendous. A 6000 page compilation of history from WWI to the reunification of Germany told through the trials and travails of several families. An impressive undertaking that was masterfully written. I enjoyed all 6000+ pages.

Phoned it in.... So disappointed after reading previous books in this series; almost as if he was tired and just phoned it in. Wasted time waiting for it to get better.

Edge of eternity. This book is a sham, a vitriolic rant against any and all things conservative. I love historical fiction, but this isn't it. I really looked forward to this book and was saddened at what I read. He missed a chance to end a trilogy with a world class thought provoking book and instead gave us his own right wing manifesto. I consider myself a moderate, but this was to much for me.

Paraguay1775

Edge of eternity. The author's dislike of Reagan and all things republican is a little distracting to say the least. He gives no credit to pope JP2,or Reagan for the downfall of communism and doesn't even deal with Britain(so as not to mention Thatcher). Gorbachev is his real hero and his view of Cuba and the missile crisis is typically sympathetic to a totalitarian dictatorship.Really disappointing rewriting of history, ending to an interesting trilogy.

Eternal Boredom. The first book was entertaining. The 2nd was a snooze. The third was a chore. I skimmed the last few hundred pages just to see what happened. Complete waste of time. I think Ken Follett hated writing this slop as much as I hated reading it.

Brings history to life. By relating the history of various families and characters over time, we get multiple personal aspects of events not easily found in similar non-fiction accounts. Some of the characters are loosely based on real people who were at the epicenter of the action. This elevates the stories to provide a "look" at the who, what, when, where and why things happened as they did. Also, we get to see how those events affected the lives of ordinary people, too. All three a very good read.

Waste of paper

Not so hot. Love Follet and loved the first book of this series. The second was ok but this one really stunk. Melodramatic, politically slanted, historically inaccurate and an overall snoozer. It is evident that he grew bored with this effort and phoned this last one in to fulfill his contractual obligations. Do not waste your time or money on this

Edge of Eternity. Best book of the trilogy!

Pretty Liberal for Me. Really enjoyed the trilogy, but "The Edge of Eternity" was too biased towards the liberal side for me. Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush were all liars, cheats, murderers, etc., it seems!!! I hope that is not true and I do not believe it. Did they make mistakes? Of course, but I believe they were acting in what they believed were the best interests of the USA.

Edge of Eternity. Ken Follett is my favorite author. I have read almost all of his books and loved them. I couldn't wait for the third book of his latest trilogy to come out. What happened???? I thought he asked a first year English student to write the book for him. It was such a disappointment in every way! It was as though he asked a Freshman English. student to write the book for him and he never looked at the results. What a disaster and how sad for all his fans.

One Word. LIBERAL 👎

MaryBG55

Biased. So liberal, it is causing me to question the first two... Disappointing.

Edge of Eternity. I truly enjoyed the first two novels in this trilogy. The last, Edge o Eternity, was not the page turner I found in the first two. Since I have lived through the time period used in the book, I am able to identify with the major events depicted in the book. My major problem is Follett's obvious liberal bent when discussing a Republican administration as opposed to a Democratic administration. Consistently running down one party takes away from the story and shows a sophomoric level of bias. Shame!

Rottiedesign

A page turner with an excellent grip on recent world history. Good reading for Follett fans.

Momabadger

Edge of Eternity. The best of the Follet trilogy. I cried at the end. If you read the trilogy you felt like you knew the families and it makes the history personal. But, if you decide to only read one, this is the best. Thank you Ken Follet.

Fanoffrank

Could not put it down. This is the best historical fiction series anyone could want.

Almuatalib

Remarkable!!!!. This is truly one of the best books I've ever read!

Ray Swearingen

Crap. Revisionist history; the first two books were well written, but his heart was not in this final tome. Way too much sex, incredibly distorted history, poorly researched and hard to believe the same author wrote all three. Publisher must have pressed him to complete the series, now dissapointing. The last Follett book I will read.

FLbluey

The Egde of Eternity by Ken Follett. Hard to capture the wonder in all three novels. Book three was enjoyable but not the best.

BarefootSandman

Disappointing last book of the promising trilogy. The first two books of Follett's far reaching trilogy were captivating and I found the characters to be vibrant and interesting. The settings appeared to be historically accurate and while some bias in the relation of historical events may have occurred I was unaware of it. In this last book, which covers a period of history I lived through, I was disappointed that a political bias colored the relation of actual events. It is said that history is written by the victors. Whether you are talking civil rights or the Cold War, clearly there are two sides to the story. Fortunately, I live in a society that allows me to speak out without reprisals, but that ability is in jeopardy. We have been gagged by "political correctness" orchestrated by the liberal left. I don't agree with Follett's liberal bias that comes through in his relation of this time in history.

Leltat

Waste of time. So liberal it was ridiculous

MTMatelski

Appalled. I'll preface this by saying that Ken Follett WAS one of my favorite writers; I have read every one of his books. If one is seeking a well researched and written historic thriller, like his other work, Edge of Eternity will surely disappoint. It is the worst book I have read in years. Follett has, like most "progressive" Boomers, only one perspective on historic events that happen during his life: his own. He obviously felt that having lived through the time period covered in Edge of Eternity, he knew it all, and no research whatsoever was necessary. He hides behind the fig leaf that this is a fictional work to create his own facts, and libel any historic figure whom he disagrees with or dislikes. The characters are very poorly developed, particularly when compared with their ancestors in Fall of Giants and Winter of the World. His protagonists, especially George and Maria, are nauseatingly sanctimonious and unsympathetic. Also lacking are the unexpected plot twists and entangling storylines that Follett is famous for and makes his other books so addictive. Edge of Eternity is so tediously predictable it was harder to get through than Atlas Shrugged. As for the sex, anyone who has ever read Follett knows to expect bits of pornography every other chapter or so. It's one of his trademarks and shortcomings with his other books. Edge of Eternity has plenty, though not as much as one might expect, given the subject period. It is also more gruesome than erotic. I don't know if this disaster was written out of Follett's desire to write a political manifesto, or a publisher that wanted to rush the final installment of the trilogy. Perhaps it was both. Either way, Ken Follett has grown complacent and lazy with success.

A book with great insight and historical reflection!. I enjoyed every moment of this novel. So much of history is brought to life with new perspective.

Goofball24

So - so. Another writer with an agenda. No better than today's press that only reports what they want you to hear. This historical novel is slanted to one side instead staying true to facts. The plot often drags. There are better books out there to spend time with
