Never go back—but Jack Reacher does, and the past finally catches up with him. . . . Never Go Back is Lee Child’s new novel of action-charged suspense starring “one of the best thriller characters at work today” (Newsweek).

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road.

Praise for Never Go Back

“A breathless cross-country spree . . . some of the best, wiliest writing [Lee] Child has ever done . . . Child’s bodacious action hero, Jack Reacher, has already tramped through 17 novels and three e-book singles. But his latest, Never Go Back, may be the best desert island reading in the series. It’s exceptionally well plotted. And full of wild surprises. And wise about Reacher’s peculiar nature. And positively Bunyanesque in its admiring contributions to Reacher lore.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Welcome to the relentless world of Jack Reacher and his impressive tendency to be in the wrong place at the right time. . . . Child has created an iconic character that other thriller writers try to emulate but don’t come close to matching. He has a talent for taking material that in the hands of other authors would be stale and making it seem fresh. . . . Tight and compelling . . . Never Go Back is one of Child’s best novels.”—Associated Press

“An adrenaline-charged, action-packed thriller . . . impossible to put down.”—Lansing State Journal

“The dialogue has never been sharper. . . . The pages turn themselves.”—San Antonio Express-News

“For the pure pleasure of uncomplicated, nonstop action, no one touches Reacher.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Brilliant . . . Child never, ever slips. He keeps the action cranking better than anyone, but, best of all, he keeps us guessing about Reacher.”Booklist (starred review)

“One of the best in the series.”Publishers Weekly (starred review)

SherryD.

Never Go Back. The best Reacher book yet. They just keep getting better. I can't wait for the next one. Then again I'll settle for anything Lee Child creates.

Anabeth.x

Jack Reacher. I stumbled upon this series some time ago. Since then, I chose Jack when I was looking for something to read. I have loved every book so far. I never have to worry about the order either. But now I am re-thinking that. I read this before 61 hours and had no idea who Susan was. It was not a big deal. Knowing who she is isn't necessary. Know who Jack Reacher is is what's important. Every book is great. These books speak to me for some reason. Maybe it's the military angle or the fact that he is just being himself. Either way, I want more.

CSMSR

Never Go Back. I was hesitant to buy the book due several of the reviews, but decided to just do it. I don't know if the less than stellar reviews were the result of someone having a bad day or what. I thought the book was very creative and entertaining and recommend it.

Konokopia

Much Ado About Nothing. It’s fifty-fifty — either you’ll like this book or not. I’m set dead in the middle. It’s fluff, but entertaining fluff until you get to the climactic revelation that feels blasé. But the potential Reacher Jr. in this book does reveal the bizarre way that progressives (Lee Child) think about sex. Reacher can’t believe he could ever be a father, ever produce a child. But isn’t that the natural outcome of sex? And Reacher has enough sex in these books with so many different women that he could be the next Shawn Kemp. For a man who seeks justice, and loves to punish criminals, how does he feel about abortion? And what kind of women would have sex with drifters? The kind that have profiles on hook-up sites. So where are the STDs? I guess in the liberal world, STDs no longer exist. Like all the unwanted unborn babies. They’re in the way of the fun.

ForrestWalker

Too pedantic. I enjoy the ore rough reacher. His intellect is good, but this book is all ind and little muscle.

B1NAZ

Worst Book. I've have read all the Reacher books and this was the worst. Started great, then died. I bought the book and the audible version because of a 12 hour road trip and my thought when the book ended was, "Are you kidding?" Disappointing, but that's ok, all the rest were excellent.

Nike Athlete

It’s alright. Again too much descriptions. At least the story is good. It’s told in the Third Person of course. The ending is not good. It just wraps itself up. On to the next one.

MarkClose

A Return to Form. I have been growing tired of the Reacher series but this new entry is at or near the very top...simply one of the best. Reacher displays some humanity and the pace is perfect with the action clever (the plane especially) while staying true to the past.

BigUglyManiac

The over dog barks. This book is classic Reacher, with gratuitous head butts and mathematical intrigue all set in a militaristic miasma that we all love. Blood, sweat, and fears, all dealt with by our battle weary Neanderthal with the beautiful mind and his pair that clank. This is not the authors most far fetched scenario nor are the baddies going to be played by "the Rock" in the movies, but it is fun to read and over the top in the familiar way all the Reachers are. I loved it.

Elsuperjefe

A numbers enthusiast should be better at probability. I devoured this book, but often felt annoyed by Mr. Reacher's fifty-fifty nonsense. If for example I have a six sided die and roll it I will either roll a six or I won't. However the probability that I do is 1 in six NOT fifty-fifty. A guy that immediately knows an insane fact about the number 3435 should probably also know beginner level probability. This may be just a quibble but the analysis is misused over and over and over again in the novel. It drove me nuts.

Riverboss

Best Reacher Story so far. Best of all his books! A+

Peggyanns1955

Never Go Back. Lee Child is back. The last few of his books felt like super action hero cartoons. Not so with this. It was smart and suspenseful throughout. There's always a little bit of implausibility with fiction like this, but it remained in the margin and didn't interfere with an entertaining story in my opinion.

Rivenman

May Never Go Back. Slow, boring, no character chemistry, like running through molasses...take your pick. I was so ready to finish this and not in a good way. Just ready to get to a good book and put this one down. This was so not a Jack Reacher story. It was like I was reading about a different character, one I was totally unfamiliar with.

SPBerko

Never Go Back. Excellent book, a good read.

MikeinNebraska

Never Go Back. This is a mediocre work compared to other Reachers. There was nothing special about the plot resolution. Hard to believe they chose this one to make the second movie about. I'm glad this wasn't the first Reacher I read or I would have stopped.

Ratter dog

My last Reacher novel?. Child's mailed this one in. Weak plot. Weak characters. Didn't care what happened to them. And no one knew what was likely going on in Afghanistan? Really? Airplane scene was over the top even for Reacher. Debating if I will take another chance with a Reacher novel. Where is this series going?

Megwal

Pretty Good. The author almost nailed it. Readers want more of the Reacher violence. It appears that Child is writing now to reach a mass-audience and no longer the faithful Reacher fans.

Hugedog

Never go back. Vintage Reacher. I've read them all and this is an excellent representation of what we've all grown to enjoy about the character. Turner is the perfect female equivalent to Reacher.

Kareasak

Disappointing. I normally love Reacher books, but this was a boring storyline and not something you would expect him to be involved with. Couldn't wait to finish it and move on!

Expernow

Jack's back. By far the the best reacher book in years. I think this series is running low and I feel that the author has stretched his character about as far as he can. Let jack rest and recharge his batteries.

Seegerone

Never Go Back. Never going to read any more Reacher novels if they continue to be as boring as this one was. What an expensive disappointment!

M&M32

Good read!. One of the best books in this series.

Tripolian

Great Read. This was my first ebook but I am an avid fan of the author. He did not disappoint. Excellent read, it was an electronic page-turner. My life was on hold While reading. Now it can get back to normal. Crap I'm late for work!

Ambiz5

Done In 24hours. Excellent! Could not put down! Bravo 👏🏽

Pappy Jim

Poof. I was enjoying this story and then suddenly it ended in a very unsatisfactory way. It just folded in on itself and was over because of a couple of convenient plot twists as if the author got tired of it and just wanted it to end. Not his best effort. That said he kept Reacher true to form and revealed a little more of his personality and history which is a big part of following this series. I won't hesitate to read the next rendition but hope Child puts more into the plot development.

Amirabear

Suspenseful the entire way. Couldn't put this one down, even though it was a big one, I still managed to finish it in 3 days. Reacher was on the run the entire time.

Tim/Boston

Not Worth the Time. Plot is contrived and regularly implausible. Writing is dull, repetitive. No character development. Total waste of time.

Rocketgirl56

Never Go Back. I enjoy the character of Jack Reacher very much, however, please Mr. Child, be done with his 50-50 habit! That got old real fast. I prefer the more simply-plotted novels because I cannot read a lot at one time, and I can therefore forget who's who as well as what's going on with multiple, convoluted story lines. Still, I would recommend it.

Hazybeer

Possibly the worst book I have read to date. The characters and situations are contrived to a moronic point that will only appeal to frustrated middle aged men in dead end jobs/marriages. The plot tends to meander with no focus. I got half way through the book and would have put it in the rubbish had it not Ben on my ipad.

CBL18

Never Go Back. Lee Child has done it again. This book was a "I can't put it down" kind of book. This book captures more of the "Reacher" phenomenon than most of his others in the series. It makes you salivate for more.

HAH02

Another great story. Jack Reacher keeps on delivering as usual. Another quality story line! Please keep them coming!

Abcreader

Never go back is right. I've read every one of these books, this was dreadful, just going through the motions.

Dbear601

Great story. Ten times better than the movie.

JayB101abn

Never go back is right!. Poor plot and character development. Majority of text was detailed traffic situations remotely related to the story line. The secondary plot was ended poorly and the end of the book was simply dropped by the author as if he were a teenager haven reached 501 words of a 500 word essay. Very disappointing.

Pcgamble

Lee Child's "Never Look Back". Just OK. Though this is my least favorite LC book, it was good enough and I finished it. Still looking forward to Reacher's next adventure!

Itouchcrashesfb

Never Go Back. This has to be one of the worst book I've ever tried to read. I finally gave up because it was a waste of time.

Igiveupallnicnamestaken

Guy. Tedious. As a series, these are not the deepest stories, but I would rate many of the earlier books at four or five stars because they are a fun read with almost nonstop action. But this one seemed to drag and bog down. I found myself skimming over paragraphs looking for the action to pick up. And I agree with an earlier review that the "50/50, flip a coin" thing got old and annoying. AND often times the situation was NOT 50/50! It didnt seem to fit someone as smart as Reacher is supposed to be. It sounded like something a clueless person would say... The equivolent to saying "I have no idea!"

Wa2116473

An improbable Account. If you can write it, you can believe it for some people, but not me. The book seamed to be such a fabrication that it took the joy out of the story and you are left just reading words. Far from Child's Par Excellance!

Marshy3030

Never Go Back. Lee Child's characters and stories have become richer over the years. I am 71y/o and am passing a legacy to my 13 y/o Grandson, Ernie. He has backtracked since he was 9y/o, and is up to date after I share this book with him. He prefers the hard copies, but since he doesn't have a job...like Jack Reacher...he compromises with Grammy's iPad. Mr. Child has affected more than one generation with the joy of reading and the excitement of "the chase"....this spills over into science, math, and many other skills young people need for academic survival in the 21st century. Thank you, Mr. Child's Grammy

Ctobriens

Great read. I loved High Heat, the extra book, short of the error. On July 13th, the Yankees were at Milwaukee not in Boston.

Big Max 1

Not good .... I found myself, for the first time, skipping over parts here and there, just wanting to get to the end, because the story is wordy, disorganized, and boring. It lacks the usual Reacher smarts. Too bad ...

Best!!. So good.

Boring again

Horrible. Terribly slow. Way too much description. Can't even understand what parts might make a good movie

Lizardo1963

Never Go Back. Loved it ,have read all his books now. Hope there is another one! Would have liked to see Reacher stay with Susan though!

Toniajane

Never Go Back. I have read 17 Lee Child books... I came across the first book and fell in love with the main character of Jack Reacher. I love the premise, the chivalry and the story line of his exploits. I waited impatiently for this book and I have never been so disappointed in my life. The story line is incredibly weak, the constant repetition is annoying and page filling and the character of Jack Reacher has fallen to a nondescript role. I wish I had not bought the book.

BardHad

Never Go Back. Have read all books. This one started off ok but ran out of steam about half way through. Too much of nothing. Weak story line re bad guys. They were not really that bad. They do themselves in.. Why? Still enjoyed the book but not as much as others.

Aaaaate

Never Go Back. As usual a great story. Will continue to buy his books. Have all of them to date and re-read at times.

Martine_y

Not his best work, sorry :(. Story is very lacking, no real action, seems to go on and on and on!!!!

Never Go Back. Love jack Reacher. Love Lee Child. Read them all!!

Mstrpara

Never go back. Very disappointing. Have read all Jack Reacher books and thoroughly enjoyed them. This one is not worth buying/reading. Plot is not believable--only conspiracy zealots that are ignorant of army and government will like it-- this book and Tom Cruise playing Reacher make it time for TAPS for Reacher.

Xyzygy

Never Go Back. Not one of Child's best. Lot's of questions left unanswered.

Tjader26

Not the best, not the worst. Really gets into the workings of the military and Reachers own unit, giving us more history behind the man. It was an engrossing read and well worth the price of admission. It's really unfair to analyze a story that could possibly disclose spoilers, so I won't do that. But this gem takes us from Washington to L.A. And back. It contains puzzles that Reacher himself causes questions in the readers mind, " How the hell is he going to get out of this". Couldn't put the book down and you owe it to yourselves to read it. You will enjoy it.

Plays 4 fun

Never Go Back. Reacher at his best and I've read them all. Especially enjoyed some of the tongue in cheek.

Longhorn5555

Poor effort. Incredibly difficult to maintain interest. Boring, silly plot. Unrealistic actions and scenarios. Drags on and on... If this had been Lee Childs first Reacher novel I suspect it would have been the only Reacher novel.

Kerham

Awesome!. My husband I love the jack reacher series and this is one of the best. Starts with action and a great storyline and never stops. Couldn't put it down and me and my husband were fighting over reading time.

Jobar_12

Okay. If you've been reading the Reacher series, you'll probably enjoy this one. The chapters fly, especially if you skim the frequent, lengthy descriptions of the settings. I liked the paternity issue and I know it's tough to have different voices for your characters, but fronting a teenager who thinks and talks just like Reacher was amusing at first and then just distracting. Does the author listen to teenagers? Even the smart ones think and express thoughts differently from middle-aged adults.

Boulder Music Lover

Never Go Back. Intricate, intriguing, involving, Jack Reacher dials through patterns, probabilities--'flip the coin; it's always 50/50'--like a master safe cracker. Discerning, crafting, fighting, as each key, each new datum is vetted and absorbed, he seeks to solve the military enigma that has jailed him, that has been thrust down his throat by powerful but unknown forces that seek to frame him and his new found friend. Reacher's unrelenting, almost feral pursuit of what is right and righteous, again produces another masterful Lee Child story that had this reader smirk with joy as Reacher deftly dials the combination that springs the lock to bring his opponents to heel. Just so very sad this story had to end.

Polo's Master

Always Go Back...if it's a Jack Reacher story. After feeling that the Reacher books were getting a little predictable...Lee Child has written a truly unique and original thriller, putting Jack Reacher back as the #1 hero in literature today...a man of principle and honor...not a Neanderthal, as some might say, but more the last of the white knights, gallantly going forward, against insurmountable odds...not being distracted by the small obstacles put in front of him, as he goes on his mission to clear his name ...and the honor of his beautiful maiden...staying focused on the mission at hand, until all the dragons are slain and the evil sorcerers are put to rest... Couldn't stop reading " just one more chapter", until all hours of the night...reading and seeing Reacher interacting with " the voice he heard while in South Dakota"...as they go cross country to discover the truth regarding two lawsuits that Reacher has to deal with...only to discover that they are not traveling alone..and that the secrets of this tale go all the way to Afghanistan and back again to Washington D.C....I am sure that this will be one of your favorite Reacher novels of all time...enjoy !!!

Aliyah A

Best Reacher Novel Yet. When I picked up my first Lee Child book, eight years ago, it was like finding a wonderful new friend. After finishing it, I Immediately went and bought every other novel and read them, in chronological order, within two weeks. Since then, I am one of hundreds of thousands, or more, who wait impatiently for Mr. Child to finish his next book, and then pre-order it on my IPad. (Just like waiting for Christmas morning!!!). I have to say...his last two books were good, but not great. This book, however, was AMAZING. I couldn't put it down. I got up at 5:30 in the morning to read before work....then snuck in time at work at my desk, and now three days later, having finished it I want to cry. You know how they always end, because Reacher is a traveler....but oh, how I wanted him to stay for awhile. Anyway, thank you Mr.Child for yet another amazing journey, fantastic cadence and verbiage, excellent action and narrative. I am busy waiting...again. :).

GCLaw

Reacher at his best. It sounds strange to say but this was an excellent book with a foolish plot. After 1000 pages I still don't know why Reacher was involved to begin with. He and another are framed with trumped up charges, which of course are all brought to light and dropped in the end. But even after finishing he book, I still don't know why. Yet I liked the book very much. Reacher is a great character. His logical reasoning and his strictly physical solutions are what all Reacher novels are about. This episode is no deviation. If you like Reacher, you will like this book. If it had a coherent plot it would get 5 stars.

Edissy

Never Go Back. Another great novel! I waited four months for it's release and it was well worth the wait. This is a simple, but interesting story extraordinarily written by a grandmaster story teller! I look forward to Lee's next one!

JG Reining

Great book!. Reacher's are my favorites and this last one was even better than I expected. I wish it never ended

Tomejr64

Another Reacher Classic. Great story as usual. Can"t wait for the next one.

DrLDawg

Never come back. Arguably best Reacher book ever. After writing a couple of "phone it in" novels, Childs' is back with a terrific read. One favor: no Tom Cruise for the movie

Prof vg

Stellar!!. I couldn't put it down. Read it in two days (had to eat and sleep a little.) It was classic Reacher. Full of energy and driving hard. I still have a problem reconciling my image of Reacher with Tom Cruise, but I'll get over it. I hope the "old man" isn't done! Thanks Lee Childs!

Otandy

Back in form!. A spectacular return to the form which made Jack Reacher such a compelling character. To say the last two novels were a departure would be cliche. Let's just say they weren't representative of the rest of the series. I think what makes this story so much more irresistible is that it takes our protagonist back to his roots and forces him to consider roads not travelled...yet. Although this would be a fine way to end the series, I truly hope that Mr. Child chooses not to.

Bboo26

Never Go Back. The best Reacher so far. Enjoyed the new characters and twists to the usual plot line.

How does a Pre-order have 38 reviews?. This book isn't out yet. There's no sample available yet. How does it have 38 reviews already, ranging from 1 to 5 stars? I'm giving it 5 stars, just because I don't like to see an author's work get bad reviews before he has even written it. ...and also because I thought his other books were 4 to 5 stars. :) I'll update my review when his book is finally published. ...and to the guy who gave it 1 star... 1 star? Really? The books not even out yet...

Johnjay45

Never go back. Not Lee's best effort. A random plot, BS ending. Not worth $11.99. If it wasn't electronic I would give it to Goodwill, instead of a friend. As of now I am stuck with it on my I Pad, until I delete it.

Src2201

A Great Read. Really enjoyed staying upmost of the night reading it. Still can't believe Cruise was chosen to play Jack.

Norminsky

Never Go Back. I was very anxious to read one of my favorite authors book. Couldn't wait to read it. Well, I couldn't wait to finish it. I kept thinking it would get better but it never did. Shallow, contrived. Really disappointing.

Qmph

Never Go Back. This story is awful. Boring. So much unnecessary descriptive dialog. And, really, how many times "flip a coin" or "it is or it isn't"? I really miss the original Jack Reacher, reluctant hero. He was so much more interesting.

S diggy

Never Go Back. Just okay. As much as I love Reacher, the plot was a stretch, and the ending was goofy!! I think Reacher would have refused to take part in this story and stayed in South Dakota.

Derek Cooks

Better and better!. Lee Child, the Reacher genius, is getting better and better with each "can't put it down" book in this series. Just makes me want more and more.

Son of Danger

Never go Back. All Jack Reacher fans will rush to read this - but like a restaurant whose specialty fails to impress the second or third time it's ordered, Never go Back will not deliver the same satisfaction as earlier books. Why? None of the plot lines are plausible enough or well developed. We wanted to see Reacher find a soulmate in Turner. At least she wasn't killed. The lame attempts at making Reacher a fall guy were preposterous when we finally learned who was doing it. I still don't understand what they were trying to a accomplish. If this is the first Reacher book someone reads, my guess is they will not scurry off to read others.

Fleysha

MOOOOOORE!!!. Absolutely captivating from the very first page. Lee Childs has a way of sucking you and not letting go. I've read just about everything this man has published and this is one of his best works. The long and the short of it is, if you've read any of Jack Reacher stories, it's really the same story. Reacher is a rugged ex military guy without a home (by choice) traveling all around the country finding trouble at every turn. The thing of it is, regardless of the fact that you know how the story turns out, the way Childs guides you through each and every turn is so exciting, that it really doesn't matter. It really is worth the read. Actually if it was possible to give it a 8 star rating I would give it, and I think it would get it from every one else who reads it. KEEP THEM COMING..... MOOOOOORE please.

Chefhg

Actual place!. I own The Berryville Grille that he writes about in this novel! How exciting that he described our place so well!! Hope readers come and visit us!

Vevov

Never go back. Not one of Childs best just not very satisfying couldn't wait to get to the end

Train0701

Never Come Back. Excellent read. However I felt the resolution of the mystery at the end was sum what disappointing. The Reacher books are one of my favorites. Thank you!

Sommersboy

Outstanding!. Child's best Reacher story in a long, long time. This is a "page-turner" of the highest order. Potential readers should not hesitate one second to buy this book.

Ultimate Ronin

Reacher is back, page turner!. Thankfully this book is way better than the one before. I've read them all. Highly recommend this one. Took me ONE day to read. Reacher fans, enjoy!

Xmarine15

Never go back. Again another great Jack Reacher masterpiece by mister Child! It kept me spellbound and guessing the whole book. The attention to detail is phenomenal. I have read everyone of the Jack Reacher books and have not been disappointed by any of them. I will anxiously be awaiting the next book

Joe in Muskego

Not great but good. I read all the Reacher books as well. Almost through with this one. Very slow start and hard to believe plot, I now near the end am enjoying it.

Dglyn

Jack's back. Once again Jack has to work his way out of an unexpected snafu. Less violence and more deduction gets the job done. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

Ciscobear

Losing his touch. This book was just plain boring.

DMSJr.

Great read.. Now I have read all of Lee Child's books. It makes me sad that I will have to wait for the next one to come out. It was a great read. I enjoyed the way Lee is able to keep my attention and interest. I find his books hard to put down and get some sleep.

Betterbari

Never Go Back. I did not understand the plot. Not my usual favorite by Mr Child!

Josephestey

Never Go Back. Another winner by Lee Child. Great storytelling, a compelling story line and great characters. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Read it almost non-stop, I could not put it down.
