Sycamore Row by John Grisham
Sycamore Row by John Grisham Book Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • John Grisham returns to the iconic setting of his first novel, A Time to Kill, as Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a controversial trial that exposes a tortured history of racial tension.
“Welcome back, Jake. . . . [Brigance] is one of the most fully developed and engaging characters in all of Grisham’s novels.”—USA Today
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy white man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his black maid, and defense attorney Jake Brigance into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County’s most notorious citizens, just three years earlier.
The second will raises many more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly? And what does it all have to do with a piece of land once known as Sycamore Row?

Sycamore Row. Just read for the second time, having read it when it was first published. Enjoyed just as much the second time. The character of Jake and the other characters from A Time To Kill come alive again and the book holds you in its palm throughout. Great read, easy flow, easy to picture the town and countryside and the southern culture then.
Interesting but not riveting. I enjoyed the southern setting and characters but the story was slow to evolve. When the book was finished I felt glad to be through the story instead of being disappointed that there were no more pages.
Great book. Wow, interesting read and a great follow-up to A Time to Kill. Hopefully it won't be another 20years before we hear from Jake again
Tear bursting twist at the end.... Very well written and touching!
Sycamore Row. All I can say is I couldn't put it down. Absolutely AWESOME BOOK!
Sycamore Row. Another page turner by Grisham. The overtones of the ending, however, leave you more depressed than his usual feel good endings.
Great ending. Some parts required intense reading, some parts easily absorbed. Loved how everything came together at the end.
Grisham’s Sycamore Row. Well done . Easy reading , told as only he can. Recommend to all .
Classic- No spoiler. Just another brilliant work by John Grisham! It was great to get back to Clanton and see how all the guys were doing. I love it mostly because I'm from Mississippi and loved "A Time To Kill".
Another hit by Grisham. Grisham has always been one of my favorite author, especially his legal thriller. I have stayed away from some of his other books, but was glad to see him do this follow up of "Time to Kill". But, I will always like his legal thrillers!
Sycamore Row. Finally read this and was not at all disappointed. The intricate circumstances, lives and goals were really presented in an interesting and understandable way. I was captivated by the deep emotions and the realistic friendships that existed between lawyers, police and the judge. The ending was so satisfactory, although I could not come up with a solution on my own. I have a lot of reading of John Grisham to do!
Good read. Reels you in from the outset. Great characters and a good read. A bit predictable but the story is a reminder of the South’s dark past.
Footsteps. This was a great follow up to A Time To Kill. Grisham, once again, masterfully weaves a story that leaves me tired and wanting more. I found myself engrossed in the plot to the point of not wanting to put it down!
Pretty good story. Takes awhile to get into the meat of the story but worth it in the end
Excellent follow up to A Time to Kill!. I love everything about this book and hope there will be another with Jake Brigance soon!
Sycamore row. This is a great read! I really hadn't read a Grisham book for some time...but this story kept me guessing and reading. Now I'm hooked again on this author and looking to purchase his next book. Thank you for a great story.
Sycamore Row. Another Grisham page turner with a satisfying ending. Hard to put down, as usual. Only two minor technical comments. "Present and accounted for" is redundant. It should be "present OR accounted for". If you are present, you don't need to be accounted for. Secondly, an acronym is initials which are pronounced as a word, such as OSHA. I don't know how you would pronounce PTC.
Classic Grisham. As soon as I started this book, I knew it would be one I would enjoy. Love the "old" Grisham!
Amazing. If you’re a fan of A Time To Kill you’ll love this one!
Sycamore Row. This is my second time reading Sycamore Row. The good thing about getting old is you forget how books ended so it’s fun to read the exceptional ones over again. Great writing, great storytelling.
Sycamore Row. Poorly told. Not the usual high standard of writing.
No words .... Best. John grasham at his best
Predictable. Ending was pretty obvious early in the book. Still a good story.
Sycamore Row. Excellent read!! I could not put this book down!! Totally worth it!!!
Sycamore Row. I’ve read many of Mr. Grisham’s novels. This one escaped me so many years ago. I’ve read several Ford County novels, and the legal thrillers, and also the unusual Painted House masterpiece. My favorite writer, just found this in 2018. You are an inspiration to all modern day authors, Mr. Grisham. Clean, riveting, and fun. Thank you.
Sycamore Row. This book is so well written that I proactively sought out a place to write a review. John Grisham is master at recreating realistic courtroom drama and complex southern characters. This is his best work and I believe is equal to A Time to Kill. A real tear streamed down my face when I read the last page
Grisham at his best!. Grisham writes with such depth. He tells the story from all sides and his characters are raw and real and flawed—even the good guys. I was immediately drawn in and couldn’t read the book fast enough to see what happened next. It’s a story about the best and worst of our laws, of our legal system and ultimately of us. We can’t find our way forward without looking at our history—all of it, not just the nice things. I had my doubts that this would be as good as “A Time to Kill.” I was mesmerized.

Sycamore Row. Superb writing, keeps your interest. Grisham is one today's best, most consistent writers.
Realistic and satisfying. Realistic characters and context. Well written as with all of his novels. I would like to see Jake again and maybe develop his personal relationships a little more in depth.
Awesome Read. I love this book! It is a great read. My daughter enjoyed listening to me tell her how much I loved it.
Sycamore row. Excellent book.
Excellent read!. Compelling from page one. This book exceeded my high expectations.
Sycamore Row. When attempting to try to explain the impact and depth of intrigue and interest this literary work had on me I find that words fail. It was and is nothing short of genius.
W. Even though it is not working I want a aWYSFESdy trWtwe has a
Sycamore Row. As always. Wonderful story line, great reveal of characters and great lessons in law!
Predictable. Long, boring and predictable. Not my favorite
You REALLY Can't Go Home Again. Perhaps the most interesting part of this story was the trial towards the end of the book. I've read "A Time to Kill" several times and have always considered it the best of all Grisham's books - my bookcase will attest that I've read them all. Just could not visualize the setting nor see great new depths of character. Even Jake was bland. I know writers have creative license as well, but for crying out loud, get on the grammar train!!! People are HANGED, pictures are hung. If the writer doesn't know this simple rule, smack the editor...
Good. I was hoping for some murder etc but this book was just plain good!! Kept my interest without all the blood, murder and twists & turns! It was a good legal read. I’ll definitely read the next book in the series!!!
Greatest John Grisham book ever.. I really enjoyed this book. Thank you for this. I can't wait to read more and more!
Slow start - fast finish.. Took way too long to set the characters and the situations, then put it all together in one finishing chapter.
Sycamore Row. This book is more timely now than when it was written.
Sycamore Row. Awesome to see Jake Brigrance come to life again! I want more!
Great read. This was a great book. I love the Jake Brigance series.
Sycamore Row. Returning to Jake, Ozzie, Lucian was Like going home again. Excellent story of redress of a horrible Wrong and yet in the end sharing.
Great story. Typical John Grissom, entertaining and educational.
I loved this book!. Mr. Grisham always keeps me looking forward to picking up his books again! Thank you!
Keeps you guessing. This book keeps you guessing, you think Jake is done and will lose the case. Lucien comes through in way you never thought would happen.
A Great Read!. Truly enjoyed reading this book! So very crafty of JG. So many times during the read I felt like I was right in the story and couldn’t wait to turn the next page!
Not one of his best works. Decent plot with somewhat predictable yet still enthralling ending. Dozens of characters to remember though few are developed to their potential. Nowhere near the original that was so deeply captivating.

Sycamore Row. Very good
Awsome. Great Read! John does it again couldn't put it down. Total page turner from beginning to end! :-)
Good book!. A lot of highs and lows for me. The end was sort of expected. I started to lose interest, a lot of irrelevant information.. Overall, it was okay!
Wow. Loved it! I'm a big fan of JG books. My favourite and the most disturbing was A Time To Kill. John's stories touch on a lot of controversy , truth and fairness. You can identify with his characters . Thanks for such a great read. This I'd my 1st iPad book purchase Anne
Exceptional!. Another hit!
Bland. Grisham's winning formula has two key elements that serve to make otherwise boring legal dramas entertaining: Compelling subject matter (A Time to Kill) and dry humour (The Rainmaker). This book has neither. If you're a devotee you might enjoy it just because it's Grisham but judged at face value this book is a complete bore.

Very well written. I'm not usually a huge fan of courtroom thrillers - but I could not put this book down. The characters came to life and I could picture something like this actually taking place. I would bet my last dollar this will be made into a movie. Overall, very well written and just the right amount of detail without becoming long winded. I'm sure Grisham could have gone on for another 600+ pages. Never a boring moment in this quality thriller. Highly recommended!
Sycamore rout. Grisham strikes again! Sycamore Row occupied most of a weekend on Hilton Head. The characters were well developed, the story involving and the plot absorbing. Jake Brigance, Lettie Lang, Seth Hubbard and the Judge were very believable and their story kept me up late and woke me up early. The conclusion, while not a total surprise, provided a twist that provoked some thoughtful introspection and gratitude for progress in racial justice......still not perfect, but improving. Well done, John!
Sycamore Row. John Grisham has done it again. Another great novel. Enjoyed reading this book and found the continuation of his story from A Time To Kill a great sequel. Nice to know what happened to those characters. Keep writing John.
Sycamore Row. Mr. Grisham is back on top of his game! The story is relatable to so many people, as almost everyone has been or will be involved in a will procedure (although probably not a $24 million one). This needs to go straight to the movies, but only if Matthew McConnahey will portray Jake again.
Friends of Ford Co. This book is a gentle and nostalgic tale of the lawyer you fell in love with in A Time to Kill, and a great introduction to Grishamantics for the first time reader. Loved it!
Sycamore Row. Loved this book Could not put it down I found myself late from lunch because I could not tear myself away!! Great read
Sycamore Row. Great read. I truly enjoy John Grisham
Sycamore Row. Loved this novel ,have read all of John Grisham's books and truly enjoyed a second go round with Jake Brigance and all the other characters from A Time To Kill, once I started I didn't want to put it down until I finished it! Keep writing books John Grisham and we will keep buying and reading them! A definite Five Star Rating
good summer read. Not a bad Grisham book. Easy read, somewhat predictable, but a story well woven.
Long and Drawn Out. I've been a fan of Grisham Novels for years, but this one was a struggle to finish. For the last 400 pages, I had to make myself fight the boredom and finish it.
Very very good.. I enjoyed all of Grisham’s books but A Time to Kill was always one of my favorites and Sycamore Row now joins it.
The Best he's written. Usually, I don't read John Grisham books unless I'm extremely bored just because he drags out his stories. This book was long but great from beginning to end. The boring parts were so few and far between and I read the whole book in 2 days, all 447 pages. Definitely buy it!
Sycamore Row. Beautiful, haunting, timely, timeless. Dealing with racial issues not from the violence of hatred but from the heart of compassion and love that wins in the end.
Slow. This is the slowest moving plot I've ever read in any of John Grisham's books. I usually finish a book in 1-2 days. This one took me weeks. The subject matter was good. It just took a long time to go anywhere.
Sycamore Row. Great read, always enjoy Grisham's great talent.
Jake and crew. Really enjoyed getting to see what Jake and the rest of the characters had been up to since the first book. Guess Grisham could make a series out of Jake like so many authors do, I would buy them.
Sycamore Row. Could not put it down! So glad to reconnect 20+ years later with the Clanton crew. The horrors of lynchings, although fictional here, Im sure are still fresh in many black families. Being white i can only imagine those horrors. But i digress, for me, this was just as raw, real, and horribly entertaining as A Time to Kill! Luv Mr. Grisham! Thank you!
Sycamore Row. This is one of the best books wrote yet! It took me two (2) days to read it, it took all my concentration, energy, and attention.
Sycamore Row. As usual, John Grisham has given the reader another amazing page turner! The further I got in the story the more I wasn't able to put the it down. Grisham had me angry at Lanier for being a dirty player and a cheat, just what most people think lawyers are like. He had me upset with Judge Atlee for some of his rulings. Most importantly though, he had me cheering for Jake!! Amazing book, can't wait for your next book John!! I never miss any!
Sycamore Row. One of his best! Love the time period and he way he has woven "old" characters into a new story. Can't wait to read the next Grisham!
Long but ok. I enjoyed the story but it was fairly obvious how it would end. Once the trial started I skipped to the end. Take out 100 pages and the it would be a good read.
Sycamore Row. A terrific book. I found it both stimulating and educational. I recommend it highly.
Sycamore Row. Great book, every detailed to the point that I lost some interest.
Great read. I found myself unable to put this book down. So good I read it too fast! Nice character development and smooth storyline.
Sycamore Row. One of the best of John Grishams
Masterful. John Grisham takes us back to the life and practice of Jake Brigance. The story pulls you in from the first pages, then develops with twists and turns that make it nearly impossible to put down. A masterful telling of a tale you'll never forget. Bravo, John. And thank you.
Sycamore row. Too many missing pages
Fantastic. I have not read Grishom for many years, but Sycamore Row was gripping from start to finish. I couldn't put it down! As always, makes you think, makes you stop... And consider... Brings empathy to the for-front.
Engaging. Typical John Grisham. Engaging with twists and turns. It is an easy read and very entertaining.
OK. Great book, except for the ending …… The ending was like I need to finish the book and move on to another book.
Definitely a page turner. Not as intense as some of Grisham's but a story that keeps you interested and reluctant to put it down. On and off over the year's I always come back to Grisham for a true novel with heart and guts. Thank you John
Boring. Characters not particularly interesting and story boring. Quit half way through. Even if story improved just not worth trudging through the first half.
Sycamore Row. Classic Grisham -- no concern about the way the legal system actually works. Other reviewers have said they wouldn't give away the ending, but it was obvious from very early on. Grisham is easy to read, but disappointing upon analysis.
Amazing. A lovely trip back to Clanton.Well written , and amazing story telling.
Sycamore Row. Attorney Grisham has done a truly marvelous job of returning to the most significant social issue in the history of the United States, Racial Prejudice and Equality. This story brings us back to the questions so wonderfully explored previously in A Time Kill. We once again are challenged intellectually and made to question our own sense of morality; of right vs wrong; of evil vs good; and while doing this are entertained once again by a Master Storyteller. This sequel is the unique rarity, it equals the or maybe surpasses the original. I especially enjoyed getting reacquainted with all my friends from A Time to Kill like Harry Rex and Lucien, glad to known they are doing fine. I hope that we do not have wait another 25 years to catchup with them again. Congratulations Attorney Grisham I thoroughly enjoyed Sycamore Row.
The best so far. I have read every one of Grisham's books. This is, by far, his best, in my opinion. It absolutely enthralled me from the first page to the last. It grabbed and held my interest throughout. The workings of the law and all things related are absolutely captivating! I loved every minute reading this account and wish it could have lasted longer.
Sycamore Row. Great book with great story. Could not stop reading. Was very nicely surprised to find Jack again being the main character. Only thing that was a little disappointing was that Jack did not seem to be as great of an attorney as the first book. His work to defend his new client was not as brilliant as when he defended Carl Lee. But overall loved the story.
how many stars?. Well, it was my second book by Grisham. Honestly I was expecting MUCH more. There are so many five stars and "couldn't put it down" reviews for "Sycamore Row", I thought it will be one of those books you read on one breath.. but no, I have to say I could not even finish it, after a few really serious attempts to read it.. Maybe it's just me - I read a lot of classics - but the language of this book seems to me rather poor, and the book is very slow.. i did not like it at all, and probably not coming back for more Grisham.
Sycamore Row. Superb! His best book since "A Time To Kill"!
Sycamore Row. A really great read! Took me a while to get into it, but once in I couldn't put it down.
Wow!. Grisham puts reading on a whole other leve
Awesome Read!!!!!. The book is Awesome from the beginning to the end. It kept me on the edge. I can't wait to see what the Book Club views are.
Sycamore Row Letdown. I love John Grisham's legal thrillers. I've read all of them. I've always been impressed that he could write such great novels without the use of unnecessary foul language and graphic sex and violence that many people, including myself, find offensive. But this novel's use of foul language did offend me. I felt he just cut loose with these words without regard to his readership. The storyline is awesome, but I was disappointed and distracted by the amount of foul language used.
Wonderful & Powerful Story. I've purchased this book (hard copy) which is my preference, but this is an excellent read!!! It's very captivating & intriguing, I couldn't put this book down. It's definitely a page turner....just like the other "readers" I'm not going to spoil any details but believe you me, you'll be amazed with this book!! Although it's only $6.99 via iBooks I've paid more since I like hardcover & it was worth every penny!!!
Sycamore Road. Once again Grisham nails it!
Sycamore Row. Amazing book! Truly a John Grisham novel! Thanks for another excellent story.
Sycamore Row. Simply awesome!
Sycamore Row. Excellent, excellent, excellent
True Grisham style. The story takes a while to grab a hold, but the character description keeps your attention. This was true to form and I can visualize the content in movie form.
Great Grisham. Grisham's books are always riveting but this may be his best yet. A fast paced legal thriller with a touching ending. Keep writing John and thank you!
