Published under a pseudonym, J. K. Rowling's brilliant debut mystery introduces Detective Cormoran Strike as he investigates a supermodel's suicide in "one of the best books of the year" (USA Today), the first novel in the brilliant series that inspired the acclaimed HBO Max series C.B. Strike   After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, creditors are calling, and after a breakup with his longtime girlfriend, he's living in his office. Then John Bristow walks through his door with a shocking story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry -- known to her friends as the Cuckoo -- famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man. You may think you know detectives, but you've never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you've never seen them under an investigation like this.

Expected better. Consumed all the Harry Potter books, couldn’t read them fast enough. This is a horse of a different colour. Boring. Poorly written. She needed an editor.

Frau L

The Cuckoo's Calling. This book is excellent! I am so glad to see that there is a second book waiting. Rowling is just an amazing writer!

Edweird

Ugh! Make it STOP!. I love Rowling just like everyone else but this book is killing me. I am struggling getting through it and it pains me to say so. It just goes on and on and on with nothing happening and it's just simply dull!

Mikef419

The Cuckoo's Calling. I found this an enthralling, exciting thriller, which any fan of the genre would enjoy. Written in a British prose, I loved how the author brought to life the variety of extravagant characters that moved the story to its surprising conclusion. I'm excited to read the next installment in the series.

Halsterx

The Cuckoo's Calling. Wonderfully written detective story. Cannot wait to read Silkworm. Loved the relationship between Strike and Robin. Hope this is just a start of a series. This was a page turner and a book I could not put down.

Reclusive1

Excellent. Great book. Well written.

Playing to relax

Excellent!. Very well written both in literary and mystery terms. The characters are clearly defined with developing relationships.

Rottiedesign

The Cuckoo's Calling. An enjoyable page turner with interesting characters. She has the magic.

MuzzB

Bloated in parts. Some parts seem very strung out and full of unnecessary detail once you get to the conclusion. But some fun characterization and interactions.

Old women reading

The Cuckoo is Calling. I thought the book took too long to get into. Very slow.

Bailey Daily

Highly recommend this series for murder mysteries. Robert (aka J.K.) knows how to give you all the clues blatantly on the page but keep you guessing at who done it and how they fit together. You’ll be engulfed at the solving of the mysteries in this series while falling in love (or hate) with the characters along the way. For those just starting the series I’ll say the first book starts slow and every book after picks up in mystery, development and gore. The most recent book in the series had me pacing and pondering every chapter while yelling at characters in the book for rookie mistakes. I recommend and gift this series to everyone! 5/5 stars!

Aylettmeadow

Fantastic!. I loved this book and was so happy to hear there was a second. Hope there are more!

Tigertrace

Slow read. Glad I read this book but it was long and drawn out. I was ready for it to end.

Kimbo75409

Great book. Very easy read! But I loved all the twist & turns the author took! It had me guessing who the killer was up until the very end! Loved it! Can't wait to read the next book!

MommaD19

Thoroughly enjoyable. I really enjoyed this book. It's not at all like the Harry Potter series, nothing magical. Just a down to earth mystery novel with great characters and an engaging plot. The only downside for me was the amount of f-bombs. But I understand that's an attribute of some people so I got over it.

Auggie's Man

Wow - wasn’t prepared to like as much as I did. Was a little put-off by it being written by JK Rowling but this was SO well written, and the plot and characters outstanding. I’m going to continue with the series!

Mylor007

AMAZING. The build up can seem tedious, but be a man/woman and stick with it! It's well worth it when everything starts to come together. I was trying to solve the mystery as I was reading. JK Rowling is the best author of our age.

DanPer224

Slow moving. I had really high hopes for this book. Unfortunately it was so slow moving that I couldn’t even finish it

Island24

The Cuckoo's Calling. Interesting story and good mix of sympathetic, unsympathetic and villainous characters. Ends with a twist that was unexpected but that was set up properly during the development of the tale. The book drags in the middle and would have benefited from editing to keep it moving along. Still, I enjoyed the story and continue to think about the plot and characters.

Nintendomango

Fun read. The characters are well developed and the story is fun enough. My primary complaint is how slow the early parts of the book are. However, the design of the characters allows for a believable story arc where a detective is allowed to mingle with the rich and solve a murder.

KIM-LYNN

The Cuckoo's Calling. The plot and climax of this book was astounding! How everything unraveled and came to light was pure art! The only reason why I wouldn't give it 5 stars was because it took awhile to get to the point every few pages. Overall, it was a good read!

Gnarreb3

took a long time to read. The book is kind of boring, sometimes the dialogs dread on forever. At the end it was ‚as expected‘.

Vincent Luong

I’ve read worse, I’ve read better. The first book of the series is not as great as I expected. The crime itself is not that complicated and the story is little slow moving. I will recommend it only if you are a big fan of J.K, otherwise I think there are other better detective novels out there.

Giv10

Satisfying Read. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the writing is succinct, yet descriptive; just enough detail to allow the reader to use their own imagination. Highly recommend

Sjm916

Great whodunit that keeps you guessing.. Great character, Strike is up there with Alex Cross, although much more rough around the edges. Looking forward to reading the next in the series.

DurhamDame

Solid. Kept my attention throughout the story. Built to a mostly unexpected ending. Well done!

Shalus

Engaging. This book started out slow but once it picked up the pace a quarter of the way through, I was hooked. It was well written and I appreciated how all the characters were well developed.

Kimmieupnorth

Good story. A little hard to read since it is written with British slang. The story itself was good though.

Lauri from Cleveland

Page turner. Loved the writing and character development. Kept me reading and turning the pages. Looking forward to more

Greyhair65

Good writing, weak premise. At the end of this read I was disappointed with the premise of the entire story…. Made no sense to me… But the personalities of the two main characters, Strike and Robin, are interesting at least.

Bbsfresh

Ok. Ok story

Cpd113

Worth every page. A great mystery, with good characters, and wonderful twists!

Curt5500

Great murder mystery. Enthralling!

NelsonMamaof2

Excellent Read. Page turner! Very fun and easy read!

54 ways

Very slow to develop. I liked the overall idea, story line, but it dragged sometimes with very little action or story development. I found it easy to put the book down and forget about it for a while. I will not try her 2nd book, not for quite some time.

Jt098

Excellent!!. I had a difficult time putting it down. Could not wait to have some time to start reading. I am so glad there is a second book.

Broderski

Outstanding. My new favorite series. I’m totally obsessed and gift this book to all friends new to Robert Galbraith. You cannot put it down once you start. It’s so incredibly well written and fascinating to read. Cormoran Strike is a brilliant character.

L Man1

Easy read. I didn't read this book straight thru. But I was able to come back to it and still follow. Enjoyed the book.

Great read!!. Couldn't put it down.

Reisetramp

A cuckoos calling. This book is a page turner that hold your attention once you get into it so make sure you get past the first 100 pages. The plot is intriguing and not always easy to follow. The characters are well developed and feel real. J K Rowling's style does reveal itself and at times you feel you are back in Privet Drive but with expletives! I can recommend this book wholeheartedly . Enjoy!

Hipcoder

Absolutely brilliant!. This is a great detective story of old, but updated and taking place in the very real world of the twenty first century. A truly unique and captivating character in Cormoran Strike, and the crackling dynamic with his assistant Robin, who is as real as the feel of the whole story. Well worth the time that you'll spend glued to this story right to the end. You'll think you have it figured out - but you'll be surprised by the end in more than one way!

Caylin12

The cuckoo calling. Great book, very hard to put down, extremely enjoyable, kept you guessing right to the end

Magpie 53

The cuckoo's calling. It was a great read. I was sad when I read the last of it as I realized that as much as I wanted to hurry to pick it up and continue reading it, it would quickly end my great pleasure of coming home with anticipation to see what was going to happen next!!!

Jessica be

All hype with J.K. Rowling revealed as the author. The book was alright, but I believe the stellar reviews it is receiving to be misleading. When the book originally launched under her pseudonym, the work didn't exactly soar to success. Still, I got caught in the hype and read the book. It was a decent story that improved as I read on, but this was by no means a page-turner. I wish I had supported a newer author with my money - interesting experiment, releasing the book under a different name.

HMPirzada

Worthy!. Not that it should matter what anyone says about what Rowling should or shouldn't be writing, but this is, I believe, a worthy follow-up to the HP franchise. She lets her natural ability to make the world whimsical, even the bleak streets and dark corners of a murder mystery, flourish in all it's captivating power. Great job, Jo!

Rosebow

The Cuckoo's Calling. An interesting plot line that doesn't turn into a page turner until the last third of the book. I found that there were too many descriptive passages, especially of the names and places in London. I have spent time in London and that wasn't much help sorting through the constant references to road names. The characters were all unbelievably flawed and the over use of the f-word was getting annoying. I assume the book was overly long because of the many descriptions and naughty words that seemed to be used as fillers. Overall, I was disappointed.

Hollerina

Great book!. This is a book that's hard to put down! It is so well written, with not an overpowering amount of details, but enough to really feel like you know the characters and the setting! So well thought out ☺️

Kristinalau

Amazing read. I read the book repetitively, and the ending was sensational! It was tough to put it down, and glad I purchased it.

Travelin kind

Kept in suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story, the prose, the gliding English. When is the next one?

Hydrated & Glowing

A Must Read Series. Fabulous writing, great character development and a solid start to a new series.

MJCWCC

The Cuckoo Calling. I greatly anticipated reading this book because of my respect for J.K Rowlings. However, I was disappointed! Although the writing is well done, the pace was slow and the development of the plot tedious. The Causal Vacancy started out slowly as well but I found it to be much more entertaining. Because of that, I persevered with The Cuckoo's Calling. It was not worth the $15 that I paid for the electronic copy through iBook.

Gramma 76

Loved the book. It was a great read....kept your interest all thru... Loved the detail and the people in the story were So well done.....thanks.....

Goodurs

Great read!. I really enjoyed the characters in this book, and am looking forward to this becoming an entertaining crime series. Fun & charming, definitely a great read.

Toogoodtobetrue9213456780

Loved it. Could not put it down. Can't wait for the next cormoran strike story!

Steve Kritzer

the cuckoos calling. ok jk rowling, after reading the first 50 pages i was wondering if maybe the publishers that turned the book down might not have been right and i was out 12 bucks. I pressed on and was rewarded with a great read. Now i feel i did not pay you enough, I have to admit, first book purchased on my ipad. And apparently I am not as smart as i like to think. What bugged me at first was the language used, quite often the main characters thoughts used words like "vituperative". Really, vituperative, what the heck is that. The language was discommodius (yeah two can play at that game rowling) at times. Until in a fit i pressed on the word muttering expletives and define popped up on my screen ( around page 50). Darn technology making my old man whining superfluous. Well after that minor complaint i was now able to read without searching for a dictionary every 10 minutes. Loved the characters. Loved the plot. Loved the twists. Super read. I am huge fan of harry potter, but this new effort was a home run. Quite different from a potter read, but highly satisfying. In a quick phrase, a highly entertaining murder mystery. Only one question, is Robin going to dump the beancounter and find her true soul mate, Strike. No accidental Eros for Strike, he is the real deal. Steve

Janimcdo

The Cuckoos Calling. Nice build of evidence and characters. Let many things go so I could read. Good sign for the book!

DSGershwin

The Cuckoo'S Calling. Pace slow to start but hang in and you will be carried away by the story of deception that reveals determination a few white lies and redemption unexpected. A Great Read!

Cuckoo's Calling. Brilliant and riveting

Booklover1012

I loved it!. While I do admit I only looked this book up after I read about it in the media, I was thoroughly impressed. Usually one for romance novels, I was shocked at how much I really loved this book. I fell in love with the main character immediately, and was sad to finish the book. If J.K. Rowling turned this into a series I would be first in line to purchase the next book!

Lady gone

Enjoyed the ride. I was certain I knew the outcome from the start. JK/Robert kept me reading for two solid days just to make sure. I enjoyed the whole process of introducing all the usual suspects, motives and twists, only to led back to my original thought. Very clever. I do hope Strike and Robin are going to be a team! Maybe a nice series of seven? Grown up stories for grown ups who need a hero who is not so dashing, over confidante or manage to have a sexual outing every other page.

MarlyHaysDom

Didn't grab me at first. I was bummed when I started reading this book that it didn't grab me at first. Not sure what I expected from the writer of the Harry Potter series, but not having read them, I guess I thought I'd be enrapt from page one. I've only heard excellent things about her HP books so the respect was there. Now after reading this, I'm so in awe of the author's ability to tell a story like this and wrap it up so flawlessly. Lots of twists and turns. Super satisfying ending. Really ended up enjoying it. Slow to start but once the characters were developed in all their glorious dysfunction, I was hooked and couldn't put it down.

Randyott

Cuckoo Calling. Loved this book. The book started a little slow but by the time I was half way through I couldn't put it down.

Mk437

The Cuckoo's Calling. Cheers, you did it again JK Rowling.

P!NK you don't know me

Brilliant book. I started out reading this book because of a summer assignment for school. I ended up lost in this and loving every minute of it. I never really found the Harry Potter series as being the best thing that I had ever read but this book changed the way that I look at all of J.K.Rowling's books. I feel that anyone will have a great time reading this book.

SAppelquist

Great read. Such a fun mystery. Adult characters with adult flaws and adult problems. Galbraith/Rowling sure knows how to write a totally readable novel.

Life's Purpose

Slow. Slow and pretty boring...a few bright moments, but a huge disappointment overall.

AnitaLost

The Cukoo's Calling. Very disappointing. I have forced myself to read 2/3rds of the way through one of the most boring and tedious books I have encountered in a long time. Poorly drawn characters that have no appeal. I have an good idea who the murderer is, but I have no intention of finishing the book, because I really don't care. Longer does not mean better - enough is enough - I'm numb.

Deacon Dukes

Good, not great.. I expected much more than good character development from such an elite author. I kept waiting for the twist, but it never came. The book amounted to the equivalent of a TV crime drama, but with more interesting characters. That said, I'll give J.K. another chance.

Leslieleo

Big disappointment. I really wanted to like this book, but it was so dull that I stopped halfway through. Maybe the last half is better. I surely hope so, but I will not find out. Not a mystery, not a romance, not a novel. What the heck is it?

Bobby Bibstin

Harry who?. I like mysteries more than I like Harry Potter. (Though Harry is just fine), but this book stands tall on its own merits -- exceptional characters, fine plot, good sense of humor, cracking resolution. How one author can excel at two genres... It may not feel fair to other authors, but readers are in luck.

JRTerrier17

Terrific read. Intricate and interesting plot with colorful characters. The two main characters are sympathetic and likable and just neurotic enough to be real without being irritating and, I hope, will return in a sequel. As a fan of mysteries and especially of mysteries set in Britain, I definitely give this one five stars.

Lovely nurse

Cuckoo's Calling. Wonderful book. A delightful read. Ms. Rowling's writing, so descriptive allows the reader a personal relationship with the book's characters. As I read I wondered who would be cast in the film that certainly will be made.

Quitiger

Amazing. I never read The Casual Vacancy, but when I heard the description of this book and that J.K. Rowling wrote it, I had to check it out. I was not disappointed! I love shows like Castle, Sherlock, and the Mentalist and I enjoy a good mystery novel...this fits the genre perfectly and it is coupled with Rowling's awesome power of character-building and descriptive grandness! The Cuckoo's Calling is a must read!

Minjoo0709

Fasnating!. JK Rowling is a sure genious!

UziAsaf

Great. I was extremely lucky to have read this novel before discovering the real identity of the author, as a result I immediately became a fan of Mr Galbraith. It is an excellent novel, well paced and filled with clues through out the book to test us as a reader. Never once did I loss interest through the course of the novel, which I must admit is no easy feat due to my busy timetable. I found myself spending every spare minute of the day to finish this, and this is something which hadn't happen since the release of the authors other literary works of the past. It is a feeling I immensely enjoyed and hope to discover again in next book

ArtisSue

The Cuckoo's Calling. Very good read. Quickly engaging, characters well built and mystery very interesting.

Gams261

A Cuckoo's Calling. A page turner... I expect a movie script soon if not already begun

Moopiedoop

Is this a joke?. Admittedly, I have only read approximately 3/8ths of this novel, but as life is short and full of surprises, I doubt I will ever finish this painfully dull novel. Initially, there is a mysterious death, which is always hopeful, but after that ...nothing. Oh sure, there is a bit of dreadfully stereotypical character development, a sort of desperate attempt at noir, but in a more depressing, sad way. Not that I felt sad really, but rather that I pitied the character for having been invented. Page after page I expected something in the way if plot development, something, anything to make me actually want to turn the page, but alas, I was never rewarded. No wonder she didn't want to put her real name on this cover!

Smokeymahone

Amaze!. Gah so much better than I expected it be, and I expected it to be great;) fantastic writing, keeps you going, loved it start to finish!

Leen3d

Entertaining. Captivated by the protagonist and the potential for longer term character development and relationships. Oh, and the crime mystery was interesting too!

KPD$

The Cuckoo's Calling. Excellent.

Rayeitel

The Cuckoo's Calling. The author takes readers beyond an exciting mystery to a novel of skillful literary depth. Each character is a unique persona, each place, whether a dingy office or a multi-millionaire's flat is painted with words that are unforgettable. As one might expect, the plot holds the reader breathless and guessing, until the end, when each reader's gasp must surely be ubiquitous. Don't miss this one! R. Eitel

Jbrahms

Fun read. Engrossing characters, good story-telling. I enjoyed this very much. Sometimes the dialogue between two characters got long-winded, and Strike's revealing of the solving of the murder was a bit too much like Poirot's in an Agatha Christie mystery. But as others have said, am hoping that Strike and Robin team up in future mysteries.

BangaloreDreamer

Very good read. Plot is interesting. The flow is smooth and intelligent. Not your run of the mill mystery. Good read.

Much too young to feel this old

Just worthwhile. Galbraith's characters were real, with believable (and interesting) strengths and weaknesses. Although I kind of guessed the general conclusion, the way it was revealed was a surprise, as well as somewhat unsatisfying. I personally prefer a climax that's a bit more exciting and fantastic. I enjoyed the story, however, and I'd like to read the second in the series, although I don't know if I'll be willing to pay $12.99 for it.

Hollywoodhank1

I didn't see that coming. This a good read, and as the title indicates I didn't see that coming. The author (a.k.a. J.K. Rowling) did a good job with her first murder mystery. I expected not to be able to put this book down, but that was not the case and the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars.

Melodyve

Stupid!. What a boring book. Dumb storyline. Not much more to add.

Lae296

The Cuckoos calling. Character development for main characters was exquisite but minor characters did not interest me. Drawn out a little too long.

RyleeRiver

Great read. Kept interest from first page onward. Looking forward to the next book.

S_u_z_b

Excellent Read!. The natural flow of Ms. Rowling's writing continues to delight as she embraced a different perspective and human contition. Thanks again for a story I will return to again!

Foie gras

Great stuff- totally riveting. Can't wait for the movie! And when's the next "Strike & Robin" book due? A Fan. Gail Bruffee Chicago

Sabistina

The Cuckoo's Calling. No literary merit

Yancando

Best book I've read in a long time!. Just pre-ordered Silkworm... Can't wait to see what is next for these characters!!

Wazooyou

Great read. Fine plot, good character development. Mr. Strike and his secretary Robin are the kind of people you hope to hear from again.

MontanaSue

Liked the book but . . . .. Well, have to say am not used to bad language and had a difficult time trying to ignore the use of (seemed like 100's) the F word. I did appreciate the story although like some mentioned was long and drawn out. The characters were good and kept me interested through out.

Molly Pomeroy

Cuckoos calling. I had to read this book twice. I would love to read another book with these characters

Thisiscatcollins

Must read.. This book is absolutely phenomenal. It keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time and you won’t be able to put it down.

Jaciquynn

Awesome. I really enjoyed this book! I liked all the dialogue and conversations, the characters, and thought it was at a good-pace. Loved it!!

Legacy donor

Just right. Amazing-a great read

Ema92311

Slow start, but a entertaining read.. A bit of a slow start for my tastes but a good read nonetheless. It was hard to put down once I hit the half way mark and I'd be interested in Strike and Robin's future adventures.

Ms. Larson

Not up to snuff. I was really expecting more. This is a mystery in which nothing happens. It's just one conversation after another. Disappointing.

Kneeknocker

The Cuckoo's Calling. Great Book, from the beginning chapter until the amazing final chapter I could not put this book down!

Yacamovich

The Cuckoo's Calling. Dull. The characters were bland and not fully developed. Not at all what I expected from J.K Rowling. Very disappointing.

Lipodom

Excellent sleuthing. A very well written sleuthing story. Rich prose makes this a very enjoyable read. The story slowly winds up leading us to the eventual exciting last chapters as the killer is revealed. The journey to that point was quite enjoyable.

Carlos cuttingedge

Exellent. This book I will dare to compare to a diesel engine, slow to start, start gaining revolutions and then is fast and unstopable, great reading , what a way this lady have to built the characters, masterful. In comparison with other books of similar theme, that are like gas engine; starts fast, revolutions come fast but loose power at the end.

Isacoblu

Really great!!!!. Written by 13 year old. Amazing book! Now I remember why I love JKR so much. I had so many theories of who the killer was and none of them were right. It might take a while to read but in the end, it's worth it.

Sittingbull strongbear

Entertaining but disappointing. Left something to be desired. Kind of a hollow novel, good characters but a poorly conditioned plot. Perhaps if the author had used her name it would be better and reminiscent of the Rowlings we know.
