Now a major motion picture starring Ewan McGregor!

From master storyteller Stephen King, his unforgettable and terrifying sequel to The Shining—an instant #1 New York Times bestseller that is “[a] vivid frightscape” (The New York Times).

Years ago, the haunting of the Overlook Hotel nearly broke young Dan Torrance’s sanity, as his paranormal gift known as “the shining” opened a door straight into hell. And even though Dan is all grown up, the ghosts of the Overlook—and his father’s legacy of alcoholism and violence—kept him drifting aimlessly for most of his life. Now, Dan has finally found some order in the chaos by working in a local hospice, earning the nickname “Doctor Sleep” by secretly using his special abilities to comfort the dying and prepare them for the afterlife. But when he unexpectedly meets twelve-year-old Abra Stone—who possesses an even more powerful manifestation of the shining—the two find their lives in sudden jeopardy at the hands of the ageless and murderous nomadic tribe known as the True Knot, reigniting Dan’s own demons and summoning him to battle for this young girl’s soul and survival...

Not the closure I expected. I can’t believe Danny is gone! I understand his mom being gone but why him?! Very disappointed about that... I would like to see a part three where Danny possibly returns through Abra.....The shining is definitely the best.

Loved It. The Shining as a story was something that I always knew about, but even though I’ve been reading Stephen King since childhood, I’d not actually read it until this year. I knew the movie, the story of the scary hotel in the mountains and the spooky stuff that happened there. But, on finally reading The Shining as a grown woman with a lot of trauma in my past, the thing that actually scared me about it was this man justifying and excusing his abusive behavior in more and more ridiculous ways. This struck me as so frighteningly real, so authentic a representation of abuse that I couldn’t help but love and hate the book all at the same time. Now that I’ve just finished Doctor Sleep, I’m again blown away by just how frightening the story is. Not because of the scary monsters, but because of the struggle that Doc, and eventually Abra, have to face with trying to jump off of the wheel that turns the cycle of abuse and addiction. It is always so amazing to me the way that SK hides these deeply real and relatable stories so perfectly inside the fantastical and terrifying stories of otherworldly monsters. I loved it. Thank you, Stephen.

Bigsafe138

Fascinating. A sequel that lives up to prequel. You’ll want to read this if you loved the shinning.

Good Good Good Sequel. Very good and interesting book if you were a “The Shining” fan and I certainly was!! It wasn’t my favorite but just like Stephen King books, I couldn’t put it down and just wanted to read and read and read so I will absolutely give it a 4 out of 5 stars 😀

TrailHo

Very inspiring. Stephen King is a king. The king of writing. I loved the book. So inspiring. I read some reviews complaining about the multiple references to AA. Am not in AA, but geez did I appreciate those! Stephen King is able to grab the big picture and express it in an entertaining way. Masterful. To be in the inner of one character, and several. Yes I love his rich writing. His vocabulary. Which forces me in any case, to go to the dictionary. Uplifting, enriching, compassionate writing. Yet able to describe things as they are, good and evil. In fair amounts on both sides!

Sydmaxx

Doctor Sleep. An excellent sequel to "The Shining".

Dmiller62

Just outstanding. I’m a long-time King fan and have read nearly all of his work. I tore through Doctor Sleep in a couple of days. Riveting, and in many ways, I like it better than The Shining.

Littledc3

Doctor sleep. It here are very few books of S kings that I don’t love. Even if I don’t love them I sure do like them a lot. This is one that I’ll read again....and again.

Crunch

Missed opportunity. I found Dr. Sleep simply insufferable. A follow up to The Shining which was a brilliant psychological/horror story to a super dumbed down story with preposterous villains that simply tries too hard to connect the dots to the past. Disappointing.

Norbyson

Wow!. It's been years since I've read a King book, when I found out this was a sequel to the Shining, I just had to read it! I just finished it today! It took me almost all year to read it!...lol Great story! Very entertaining, descriptive, and of course scary! Definitely worth a read! Thanks Mr. King!

RyanneO97

24 year starting to read again. I read the Shinning and then Doctor Sleep as a way to get back into reading since academia ruined the love for me. At some points I liked Doc Sleep more than the Shinning due to character developments. Some parts of Doc Sleep angered me, such as a plot twist near the end of the book that really did nothing for the story or solving the “who is the steamhead” in one sentence. Overall, i loved this book and I am really sad to say goodbye to Danny.

Stephen King is incredible.. Top 5 best books I have ever read. Absolutely recommend it. Once I started I could not put it down.

stephen kings doctor sleep. good revenge plan, nice book.

Not What I Expected. I absolutely loved The Shining, however this book doesn’t ready as a horror novel. It’s more of a drama with some violence here and there. I wouldn’t go into this with high expectations.

DocOfAreaology

Doc. I’ve been attached to Danny Torrance since I first read The Shining at 12-years-old. I don’t want to say goodbye to the man he has become.

I WILL GIVE IT A STAR'S BUT............ CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW GOOD THE BOOK IS PLZ I PLAY ROBLOX.?

Grueling. I liked the book but felt it drug on

Meesh 76

Meesh 76's review of Doctor Sleep. This book is a must read for any true Stephen King fan. I just finished Doctor Sleep and it was amazing. It's about Dan Torrance from the Overlook Hotel all grown up. I love how Stephen King finally gives us the Torrance family history. Dan is grown up & is trying to save Abra, his niece from this strange tribe who use the mist of children to live forever. They're a vampiric cult whom all follow the orders of Rose the Hat. At the end Danny must face his own personal demons as well as maintain his composure to save his niece, her family, and his friends. It's a must read!! The master is at it again!! I'm ready for Stephen King's next book Revival! 11/11/14.

Lrhines1

Great Sequel. I never expected a sequel to The Shining and was thrilled when I learned about the release of a sequel. Definitely peaked my interest to pick it up. I enjoyed getting to understand more about what it means to Shine and what exactly can be done with the ability.

Lessismore16

Everything you want in a S.King thriller!. Hands down one of the best books I’ve read! It’s not the sequel you would expect to the shining but it is COMPLETELY worth the read. It’ll have you at the edge of your seat from the first page until the last. I’m never going to be able to look at a RV the same again! Moral of this review, buy the book you seriously won’t regret it!

My opinions and i

Epic!. I have always been wary of audiobooks because I'm very picky about the narrator. But let me say that Will Patton did this novel so much justice that I went out and bought the other Stephen King books narrated by him. The combination of Patton's voice and King's imagination led this novel to becoming one of my favorite. I very highly recommend this audiobook.

Cuddle kids mecari

Read. Best put together story of all time and I have read a bunch. King outshone (!!)himself.

DamesandersT

One of Kings BEST. Aside from the gruesome deaths of the victims, this book is a non-stop thrill ride through the imagination of one of America’s best storytellers. Loved how Danny resolves his issues from childhood to adulthood with the help of those human angels that seem to pop out of nowhere when you need them. Not being predictable or inappropriate like so many other authors I will not name; King always delivers a spellbinding story told as only he can. Thx for the nightmares and the adrenaline rushes!

Liz32906

Doctor Sleep. Great as ever ,Stephen King is the best storyteller of our time! Doctor Sleep had such a wonderful twist and turn.It kept me reading when I should be doing things like sleeping! Liz Bell32906

One of King’s Best. I have read many of King’s books. Good plot and great characters. Some of King’s books leave you hanging at the end. For once, he wrapped up the loose ends and had an ending.

Ninstints_krf

Finding Dan Torrance. Years after the horror at the Overlook Hotel, we catch up to Dan Torrance in his adult life and career. Never too far from the shadows and echoes of the Overlook, Dan still deals with his unique abilities, colloquially called the shine. The shine in others varies in strength, and Dan gets glimpses of those folks frequently, for good or for not so good. Dan really puts the shine to use for good when he lands a job in a small town New Hampshire (recommended to him by Tony) at a hospice. Then he finally meets a person that has been calling to him, using the shine, for a long time. That person will change his life in a number of unexpected ways. Doctor Sleep is an excellent read.

FeatherLynn42

Not what I was hoping. I enjoyed knowing what happened to Dan Torrence. I didn’t enjoy the plot twists and how predictable the book was. The first half was decent. The second half was boring and made me wish the book was over already. Childish and not scary.

NoMuttsWithNuts

Scary. I first thought it was scary But then it just boring

Laura Renèe

The perfect sequel.. One of my favorite Stephen King books and the perfect sequel to The Shining. It is extremely well written and impossible to put down once you get started. It’s one of those books you can read over and over again without growing tired of it. Stephen King killed it again and as with all of his books it was worth every dollar spent.

Bmmccord

Perfect sequel to The Shining!!. This book is about Danny Torrance (the little boy in The Shining). Must read!!

Nikkisweet617

Love. Amazing sequel, I loved it

Doctor Sleep. Good reading!! It's hard to put this down and at times, it's scary to turn the page!! Enjoy the adventure!!

Doctor Sleep. I really enjoyed this book .. I wonder what may happen to the remaining True Knots :-)

Halsterx

Dr Sleep. I gave Dr Sleep 5 stars (4-1/2 if I could have). Being a long time “constant reader” of King, I was happy it didn’t disappoint. I couldn’t put the book down. I truly enjoyed the character development and the unique, unexpected and sudden King style of story telling. Dr Sleep was a very worthwhile read and I recommend it even to the non-King readers (although first reading the 5 star “The Shining” is a prerequisite) Hal R

MindyPH1694

Phenomenal. I love it!

T&TS

Doctor Sleep. Excellent writing by one of the worlds best authors. Stephen King is brilliant in this exciting and heart pounding sequel to The Shining. The characters are alive and exciting and you want to keep reading to see if they can overcome their obstacles and prevail. I recommend reading the first novel if you have not in awhile before venturing with this one and do not read this if you have only seen the movie staring Jack Nicolson for that film is a far fetch from the actual story.

Brownd79

amazing!. I have only read two of stephan kings books before this, pet sematary, and the shinning. I had just finished reading it not to long ago this book is by far my favorite of the three! ( loved the emotion described and throughn into the characters!)

A favorite for me. Sometimes King just gets everything right

LB336

King must love AA meetings.... What happened to Stephen King? This book is so see through, boring, and rushed. I mean, who didn't see that ending coming!? Though I didn't expect it to be as anticlimactic as is was. Yawn... The characters are forgetful. I didn't really care who lived or died, I just wanted it to be over. And what's with all the Alchoholics Anonymous? It's throughout the entire book. He's a drunk, we get it. This book should've never happened...

Bobby N Bella

Dr. Sleep...When is the movie!?!?. Great sequel to The Shining. Seeing Dan Torrance all grown up and the new adventure is astonishing.

:) 😍. Love the book and the movie

Mommycakes14dd

Better than expected like usual!!!. He nailed it once again!!! What a page turner!!!

Khaleel O.

Slightly Above Average and Undercooked. The Movie had a better ending, let me start there. It’s Stephen King so you can expect good, engaging storytelling with the Book. But there is a sneaky lingering sense that he pulled his punches a bit. There is enough raw content in this book to make a masterpiece but he held his hand, maybe because of time? Maybe he ran out of ideas? Or maybe for ‘political’ reasons? Who knows? He could have really turned up the heat in this story with true horror instead of the few teasing tidbits that we got. What we have here is the shadow of a masterpiece that suffers from ‘neatness’, a fair bit of filler and underdeveloped ideas and tangents. I expect Part 2 (Shining Part 3?) and that this universe will be fleshed out. Until then, 2 stars for being only slightly above average, undercooked, and being outperformed by the movie with a lazy ending.

Catch622

Bought on a whim. And I can’t put it down. Amazing read!

Mike L.J.

Wonderful.. As always, this is a fantastic piece of literature from Stephen King. The story was very gripping as soon as the book started. The character development was absolutely amazing. I really felt for the Stone family and Dan as the book progressed. My father is an alcoholic so this book really resonated with me, and I feel like I was able to take away a lot from it.

Dr. Sleep. Just finished Dr. Sleep. Saddens me as I have had a dry spell of wanting to read any books of late. I have missed reading Stephen king, and was truly thankful for the memories of Danny Torrance heart warming book for us constant readers, Steve you rock !

Miss_deanna

Had me hooked from the beginning!. I always wondered what happened to Danny “Doc” Torrence, and this book put a perfect ending to a story that I grew up reading. Now, let’s hope the movie does this one justice (unlike the first).

AnitaPilgrim

Doctor Sleep. King is a true literary genius, by far my favourite author. As usual i was unable to put the book down until i was finished, amazing read

Daeva_

Silly. $18 for an ebook...?

Gumshoe2

Disappointed. This book started out great but, like so many of his recent books, the writing became preachy. We get that people go to AA and people get cancer, but stop making the books ALL about that. His older books had passion: the more recent ones do not.

Doctor Sleep. Wow great read, I can't wait for the movie!!

Doc is back. No need to wonder what happened to Danny, he has been locked up in King's mind waiting to make a comeback and comeback he did. What a great novel!!!

Doctor Sleep. Love king I couldn't put the book down. Loved the ending.

Wasgiven2fly

As good as it gets... Having been a huge fan of The Shining film I was very excited to read what happened to poor, Doc. This new tale intertwines 'the shine' and something completely new to scare the crap out of you. Plenty of twists and turns to keep the pages turning in my opinion. I loved the characters and architecture of the story. Thanks Mr. King for giving us this next chapter :)

Old School King. Loved it, perfect follow up all these years later.

Wonderful, believable sequel to The Shining! Couldn't put it down!!!!. True Stephen King! The gory and wonderful details of being human, an alcoholic, and a person with a special gift were all over the place - in a good way. Loved it!!! The story keeps you engaged, anxious, and entranced. A very good read. Love the actual details of AA and the recovery program, too. Wonderful job, Stephen!!! Keep them coming!💚💚💚👏👏👏

Another Great Read. So good and mesmerizing, as SK's books often are, I spent an absolutely gorgeous Saturday reading and finishing the book from practically the beginning versus running my much needed errands. Well worth it!

A Worthy Sequel. Although it lacks the force of terror it's predecessor commanded, this sequel is equally compelling in terms of character development. I found myself racing through the pages just as I did with The Shining, hoping for our protagonist to have a happy ending. The story itself had high and low points, but was made unforgettable by the great characters Mr. King is so flawless at creating. My only complaint is that the ending was so thoroughly foreshadowed that it was hardly a surprise. All in all, this is a book that should absolutely be considered one of his greats. Fans of Stephen King should definitely have this one on their to read list. This terrifying book will definitely make me think twice about stopping at a rest stop where there are Winnebagos and campers abound!!

It All Comes Around. I still remember reading, The Shining, a book that I borrowed from my neighborhood library. I was in 7th grade and I was in my scary, thriller genre phase. I liked reading RL Stine, but I was especially fond of Stephen King's novels. The Shining and Misery, were and continue to be favorites. So, when I heard that there was going to be a sequel to The Shining, I had my doubts, but just reading the the first couple of pages, I knew that this was something special. I haven't enjoyed a scary book in such a long time, maybe because I'm in my 30s and nothing really scares me, unless it's a non-fiction book, and even some of it can be fictious. Reading this made me remember when, I was in 7th grade reading in a dark room with a small table lamp next to my bed, and then, not being able to go to sleep, because I was scared, but also because I really wanted to see how things 'turned out.' This book made me feel that way all over again, my favorite line and it applies to my experience, "it all comes around." Thank you Stephen King, for letting us into your scary mind, even though you have caused me to have some sleepless nights.

Sammij69_

Torn??. I have read ALL of his books and was never disappointed...never, that is, until now. I tried to get into it, I really did, but failed! I got about a third if the way through and that was all I could take. SO BORING, YAWN, "Sleep" is a great word to have in the title, and so unlike SK usual thrillers!! Maybe I will try again after reading all of the positive reviews, after I read Mr. Mercedes? Really though, a sequal to The Shining, I don't think that is accurate. Two stars I gave is just because it is my favorite author of all time :( I will revise if I ever get through it and feel any different.

Cocoa56

Doctor Sleep. Classic King! I almost didn't want the story to end but alas, it had to. I enjoyed it immensely and was quite happy Dan made it through.

PaddyQYork

Awesome--no surprise there!. The worst thing about this Stephen king novel is that it's so good, that I can't put it down. Then it's over so fast! :-/

Robin Jane

Doctor Sleep. As always Stephen King has done it again. I know there will be another book after this one about Dan& the Overlook resort. I hope it won't take years for him to write it. Great book. It's a must read.

One of the best. I enjoyed everything about this novel

SneakspbsX3

Awesome book!!!. One of Stephen kings best! Greatly entertaining. Hard to put down! It's hard to find a sequel that's better than the original, but this one nails it!

Mega_4pt0

Couldn't stop reading. This book was honestly one of the best books I've read. Stephen King has the ability to submerge you into the story whether it be through small details or he lightest emotions that we all experience at one point or another. He can throw you from one scene to the next effortlessly. All the while you are gripped into some overwhelming paradigm along with the characters. This book has tons of creativity and is worth purchasing.

Mary Mc 1

Hands Down True King!. An avid King fan, I was very pleased to journey back into Danny T.'s life. As always, Mr. King takes us back effortlessly, with a brilliantly written story. A real page turner for sure. Now I remember why Stephen King is my favorite author. Mary Mc

Junk2Gin

Really liked it!. I thought this was a great story, and I can't wait for the movie. I am thinking Nicole Kidman as Rose and Michael Biehn as Danny. I also see Morgan Freeman as Billy. We'll see - lol.

Arias.

What am I reading?. Dr. Sleep has been extremely difficult to read. It reads like a teenage novel. The characters lack any depth, the story is predictable, and Stephen King makes so many cringeworthy modern references ("fruit ninja" and "twittering" for example). If you're looking for horror fiction, this is not it.

Nbowncrawford

Applause. What a gripping read. I stopped reading kings work for a while as it became somewhat stale and commercial. This novel, however takes me back ten years, and king clearly goes back to his roots of writing. Only one disclaimer that comes to mind, you won't be able to put this book down.

Springhaven 844

If you're a fan, as I am.... This is a terrific book. The storytelling is extraordinary, as It always is with Mr. King. That would be enough, but what takes it to another (ok, a whole nother) level is the foundation on which it rests - The Shining was a great story with compelling characters and it is a special pleasure to meet them again.

Riverhawk44

What ever happened to that nice kid. Again our constant writer fails to fail.

Vernzilla

Doctor Sleep. Once again I've been drawn in by Mr King so swiftly and unable to put his writing down knowing full well it's past my bedtime. So sad to see the last page go. Perhaps it's time to re-read The Stand again. I'm not one to read anything more than once. But The Stand? It's a good standby. Pardon the pun. Thank you again, constant writer. You've never disappointed.

Rigo D.

Doctor Sleep. Awesome! This is one of the best sequels ever written. I hope they make the movie cause it will be huge. Loved every page!

Ferran275

Amazing!!!. I've never been drawn into a novel so completely before! I originally read The Shining back in highschool, about 13 years ago. So when I heard the man was writing a sequel I was pretty excited! It follows the original enough to bring back fond memories and at the same time stay genuinely true to itself; not getting hokey and bogged down by all the nuances of the 21st century. Actually, I felt having the added advantages of living in a 21st century world made the book that much more exciting. There were times I truly (as the old adage goes) could not put it down. I HAD to know what would happen next. I loved every page of it and it's only a matter of time until I pick it up again.

Ron360

Ron360. It took me a while to get into this story an extension to the shining. I ended up liking it. Thanks!

Doctor Sleep. Steven King at his finest.

Slayer Fan 911

Amazing sequel!. This book was wonderful.

SevereWeather2010

Sleep Doctor...didn't help me sleep. As with most of King's novels, I missed considerable shut-eye immersed in his vivid story-telling. While not in my top ten...the pace of the story peeked about 300 pages from the end...still an incredibly intriguing concept, solid character development and dream-inspiring imagery. Thank you Doctor.

000000001

An enjoyable read. It takes about a1/4 of the novel before the true narrative starts but the opening has nice vignettes, some nice nostalgia. It is well written and interesting but it just leaves you hanging for the direction the story is headed for a while. Once the story kicks in it becomes a thrilling ride that is hard to put down. One criticism would be the villains came across as too sympathetic and seemed a bit too weak and non-threatening. They had a really cool backstory and I would have enjoyed more description on it. On the plus side, this really allows the pace of the novel to be fast and enjoyable. All and all I wasn't as scared for the heroes as The Shining but I was even more invested in the outcome and it was interesting with a few clever set ups.

Wylthng

Dr. Sleep. One of the best books I've read in a long time, I'm sorry I'm done with it.

RussellFogg

Brilliant, he is back. I started to see it with the Dome, then 11/22/63 and now this novel, cannot wait to read what he has in store for us next.

Glider1964

Awesome!! As always!. In terms of King novels, Doctor Sleep is a classic winner!!! (Bravo! Mr King). The continuation of events in the life of Daniel "Danny" Torrence, is both wonderful, and informative. tying up the "loose ends" of this characters journey post "The Shining". As is the case with all of the King books I have read, it was riveting, suspenseful, and oh so well written! I found myself "sneaking"to read further at every possible chance. Again, Bravo Mr. King, you've done it again, further galvanizing me as a lifelong fan!!

Allieada13

Doctor Sleep. An amazing read. Felt I was right back with Dan and what happens to him. Story was interesting and the story grabbed me. Not crazy gory but just enough. Loved it.

Brb King

Excellent Read. Excellent read from front to back! I read The Shining a long time ago and when I saw this new release I had to get it. Trust me it did not disappoint!

Swiftmovin

Doctor Sleep. It has been good to see what happened to Dan. Loved this story.

Dr.Alan

Dan Torrance versus The True Knot. I read The Shining when it was published and thought it was great. Now 30 (?) years later Doctor Sleep picks up the adult life of Danny-now Dan Torrance. This is a riveting sequel. I found it a bit slow in developing, but in the end well worth the wait. The book revisits many of the characters from The Shining, but also develops a whole new cast of interesting figures, led by a young girl named Abra Stone. If you like King you will like Doctor Sleep, written by one of America's great storytellers and the ultimate master of horror.

Gaylagal2

The Best-No Spoilers Here. This is King at his very, very best! This just might be his top novel ever. I could not stop thinking about this book and when I finished it I was almost sad that it was over. Read it and enjoy!!

Pageflipme

Amazing!. Stephen King rarely disappoints, and this book reminded me once again of why I love his work! Anyone who ever wondered "what ever happened to" a character in a book after the story ends will be glad they bought this one. The first book I got excited about and read no stop until the end in a long, LONG time. Greatness! Thank you once again, Mr. King!

Stephen King Shining On

Doctor Sleep. Let go and let God. A great story of personal struggle for spiritual freedom. King writes the best stories out there and this is no different. Dan Torrence grows up and comes to face the empty devils who steal the Essence of Life. Shining on into a road to recovery, he revisits places and memories familiar to long term Stephen King readers with new and insightful clarity. Enjoy this novel and keep up the good tales.

KellieDee

Closure for Danny. Follow up on Danny after the horror of The Shinning was very satisfying for me. SK was spot on of all the AA things. The the wheel that Akra used was intriguing. I found this to be a all nighter Read. Well maybe all nighter and then some. Had an MVA and was on bed rest so it was just what the "Doctor" ordered !!

Redhead 52

Dr. Sleep. I loved this as well as I have loved everything I have read by Stephen King. I think the Gun Slinger books are still my favorite. But I will keep reading until I find something that I can call my next favorite. Keep up the great work and I will keep on reading. Love you Stephen and the books you write.

Awesome .....

Fantastic. Loved reading this.. What a great a follow up to the shining, me like others have often wondered what happened to little Danny Torrence and Mother Wendy. I certainly I don't have any more questions.. Thanks for a wonderful read absolutely loved reading every single page..

Starracino

Awesome. Read the shinning first because I haven't read it in so long, then read dr. Sleep. Very good book, couldn't put it down! Loved it!
