The ocean at the end of the lane. I don't know what everyone is raving about. I found this book boring and a waste of my time.Made myself finish it, but was very disappointed.

MeganC864

Good read. I love anything by Neil Gaiman

Murilyn

The Oceab at the end of the lane. I read half of this, and quit listening. It is equivalent to a children's fantasy book. I didn't like this book.

None12300

Liked it. Really enjoyed the book. I would recommend it. Didn't like the ending.

Gleeloverobsessed

Ocean by eil gaiman. Great book. I wish it went on and didnt end

R3qgwrg

The ocean at the end of the lane. Very strange imagination! Did not like it. The story synopsis was very misleading. The story line sounded great. The imagination was too strange to keep me interested.

Jon-NC

Wonderful. Just an amazing tale and thought provoking read about life.

Crmixon

Such a sweet story. Read in one sitting!

DrKate aka The Rock Doctor

Loved this book!. I thoroughly enjoyed this book on many levels. The story kept my interest and I buzzed through reading it in a few hours. Sometimes, a novella is exactly what I need during busy times. The metaphorical, spiritual depth underlying the surface was what touched me the most. This book fed my soul. I'm going to re-read it and highlight some of the most poignant passages.

Dribre

Ugh!!!. I tried to read this book several times but in the end decided I wasted $6.99. There are much better books to read than this one!!

Nansig

Not what I expected. Started out well, then went science fiction on me! Not my cup of tea.

Ktoods

Stunningly beautiful. a story that lives inside throughout time. This is now part of me and I am forever grateful.

Mememetme

Harry Potter for adults. Expected a mystery suspense novel, not fantasy nonsense. Couldn't finish the book it was that awful. I went by the reviews but clearly I'm not a fan of this genre.

Booked & Loaded

Creepy and Awesome!. Neil Gaiman has a special talent – writing creepy and not in the same way blood or gore are creepy. Gaiman does not need to use curse words or violence. His true talent is recognizing the childlike fears we hold inside and creating a story that explores the depth of them. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is such a great example of this talent. The innocent fears of an everyday child come alive in this shorter story about an impossible journey. Impossible, yet completely brought to life through the eyes of a child. That being said, this is not specifically a children’s book. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is more about the fears adults like to believe they have grown out of. Told in a way that pulls you into the book and allows you to live their quietly while watching the memories play out. Thought provoking and interesting, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a book I will not soon forget. If you are looking for a change of pace from the normal filler books, this is a great book to switch it up. The downside was the ending. I am not sure what happened and felt like the ending didn’t fit the rest of the story. It was a bland ending to a great story. Narration: Narrated by the creepy genius himself, Neil Gaiman was shockingly good. OK, so maybe that was kind of what I expected, so “shockingly” might be a bit of an exaggeration. I think a part of me wondered how different an author would interpret characters, and probably made a slight assumption that it would not be as good as I hoped it was going to be. That ended up not being the case. Gaiman glides through every part of the story and made feel childlike. I so wanted to close my eyes and wish myself young, cross-legged on the floor, with Neil Gaiman sitting on a stool reading this book to me. I rate The Ocean at the End of the Lane 4 out of 5 Bullets.

Sandywc

Ocean at the end of the lane. I thought this was a young adult's book. It captured my imagination but I did not get the same four-star vibes everyone else seems to have. It reminded me a little of a kinder and gentler Stephen King. All in all not what I expected. I did not see my review anywhere. It makes me wonder if the " review" system is honest.

Luv3u143

Paid for the whole book, and only got 50 pages. I purchased the book & only got 50 pages. What a rip off. I want to read the entire book, or to get my money back.

Yomama5640

Loved it!!. This type of story is right up my alley. Something like this could have actually happened (if you have an open mind) and that's what I love about this, it's nearly believable. I recommend this book!

Whim1954

Great book. Read this book many years ago and have read it again and still enjoyed it. Neil Gaiman is a wonderful storyteller.

Zdog80

Captivating short novel.. It has all the elements of a great novel, and although short in length, the story will leave you fully satisfied. Neil Gaiman's story telling is truly captivating and it's amazing the level of complexity and detail this book achieves in so few pages. Great read!

Amazing Fantasy by a Master of the Craft. The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a 2013 fantasy novel by British author Neil Gaiman. It tells the story of an unnamed man who has returned to his hometown for a funeral. He turns down a lane that ran by his childhood home, and at the end of the lane he falls into the events of forty years before. When he was a seven year old boy, there was a thing that slipped into the world. It used him as its gate, and began to influence the world in ways that were unnatural. Fortunately, he found the Hempstock Farm at the end of the lane. This farm was inhabited by three women, one very old, one middle aged, and one is a girl who appears to be eleven. These women will help him, but this will not be without great cost… This book is difficult to describe. It’s a literary fantasy, and seems like it has elements of myths and fairy tales woven into it. It is also reportedly semi-autobiographical, and it certainly seems to describe a very British childhood. My copy of the e-book includes a lot of great additional materials including a reading group guide, and an interview with the author concerning the book. Is it good? Indeed, it’s by Neil Gaiman!

Must read. I love Neil's work he always grabs me in and I can't stop reading

Landsboy

F. Would have never read if not forced to.

CleanNemo

The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I cannot easily convey how completely I delighted in the reading of Neil Gaiman's book. He grabbed me rather early on and I delighted I each turn, each persons entrance. I marvel on how so fantastic a tale could so entrance and delight. When putting it down I would feel the least bit sad to have to enter my day rather than remain for the full measure of time as was our main character sorry to ever have to leave the Hempstock farm. Right. Well done. Off you go,now.

Onoudi'int

An Enchanting Novel. Neil Gaiman creates a world where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blend into one another. In this world light is found in the least expected of people and places, and the dark slinks unseen or disbelieved. A bewitchingly penetrating story which reveals fear begets bravery, and children see more than adults could fathom or comprehend. I couldn't put it down, and when I did I picked it up all over again.

Ashley Zavislak

Already Read Twice. I can’t say enough about this amazing imaginative and vivid story. It’s a short read but oh so immersive

Uprise24

A beautiful book. Let me start by saying that I never read science fiction and I have never read children's books, except for all the Mary Poppins ones. I sort of stumbled into this book and was bewitched by it and the characters that were portrayed. I am so weary of ebooks that just lift passages from other books & patch them together, that I'd almost forgotten how I love to read until I read The Goldfinch and then this one. So thank you, it's so wonderful to know that there are still people out there writing books. Carry on, then.

DerrickMONROE

Fantastic!. Gaiman sticks truly to his style of writing where focus is required and an appreciation for his simple yet effective writing style. Great read!

Mablt

Let me in the ocean, it did.. A useful tool in finding somethings you may have lost.

MacoyWonderboy

The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Here is a book that is made of the perfect mix of fantasy, childhood memories, adventure, and wonder. This book by Neil just speaks so much truth. Amazing work.

Amir Abdeh

Not the best Gaiman book, but a good read.. Not what I was expecting from Gaiman, after reading many of his books such as American God, Anansi Boys, Neverwhere and the list goes on. This seemed more of a children's book, like The Graveyard Book. Nevertheless it was an ok read.

Manicmechanic08

I’m becoming a Huge Neil Gaiman fan.. Awesome!

RockStar

Touching, heartfelt. I found myself stopping..staring at the wall...affected by memory...moved to tears...sometimes without clear reason. Incredible read.

Asapr212

Exceptional - Gaiman Does It Again. I ate it all of one piece. The devil is in the details. I enjoyed finishing it and then starting again right away ...

WEDALLARD

Great writer. This is a fantastic read! It is one of my favorites by him. If you do not like twists and cannot read complex writers he is not for you. Also read The Graveyard Book. It's a teen book but great

Alma722

Amazing. Worth the read. His works are always so amazing

Tigonie

Riveting. Anyone rating this book badly does not understand Gaiman‘s writing. He is just on another level. He’s that good. His books are always incredible and have never failed to captivate me. This book was very well written and also very interesting. Some people also have said that it is a children’s book, from the eyes of a child. Not true. It is a childhood memory that is being reviewed by an adult. There are also some adult topics that may be inappropriate for children. I have always admired his talent of giving such grim topics such a fantastical mood. Not that I don’t admire his amazing talent as a writer in general. All of his books are worth a read. If you see a book with Niel Gaiman on the cover, buy it. Check it out. The money will definitely be worth it. And this book is also in that category. And if you’re mad your ebook didn’t download, then just buy it for real, for Pete‘s sake. All pages included, guaranteed.

DJGatortail

Hypnotically brilliant!. Neil Gaiman delivers once again. An absolute must read.

MoReddington

The ocean at the end of the lane. Terrific!

Chibby.

Hmmmm. Not at all what I expected. If I had known it was more like a fairy tale than a novel I would not have purchased this book. Or read it. It was ok, but not really my style.

CitizenRob

A good read.. This is the first Neil Gaimen novel I have read, and I must say it was an excellent book. It is a surreal story, and an emotional one. It is filled with childhood's fears and life's sadness. Rather than give anything away, I'll just say it is a well told story, the sort of story you'll still think about years from now.

ILOVE PIDCASTS

The ocean at the end of the lane. Loved it. Good read!

Puss Bompansero

Just Silly. This is a book for children, not adults and should be advertised as such. Complete waste of my time and money but might be enjoyable for a 9 year old

Engineeredguy2

Only got 20 pages. Don't really know if this is a good novel or not. Only got 20 pages out of 192

NM Williams

Ocean at the end of the lane is a must read. Lovely, convoluted, intriguing and immersed in imagery - wonderfully written and a joy to read

KellyGSmith

What's wrong with me?. I actually feel guilty for not enjoying this book. The prose was strong and the characters good, but I kept checking the page numbers and wishing it was over! I skimmed the last few pages and figuratively threw it against the wall when done (no way would I throw my iPad!).

Zakenfein

Fantastic.. If you haven’t read it do yourself a favor and do so.

Tajgirlone

Mindbending. This is an amazingly told story. Read it.

Patricia figg

Ocean at the End of the Lane. This story is full of emotion. It is it is the recollection of a grown man as a 7 year old boy and his experiences at a specific point. It is magical... Very different. I loved the spiritual undertones of the story... Having faith... Sacrifice.... And so much more. If you are looking for the normal boy meets girl and the run off in the sunset with a twist here and there... This isn't the book for you! You have to like spiritual, whimsy, magical, emotional ... I love this book! Awesome read!

Flydiversd

Not very good. Wasn't exactly boring, but just kind of scattered events without much explanation of who these people were, where they came from, or why they were there. And the main character being 7 years old was not believable. Not sure why I picked this one, seemed like a children's book written for teens, I guess the summary was misleading.

Couch121107

Amazing. Love this book, definitely worth reading.

Favorite Author. Period.. I'm not a strong reader, never have been, but Gaiman's work pulls me in every time and this one made sad that it was over so soon. I could have lived in that dream for so much longer. I can't wait to share it with my children.

Ganjaplanerida

Fantastic.. As a huge fan of Mr. Gaiman I went in with high expectations. Of course I got nothing I expected, instead I was wonderfully surprised. Just a great read.

Ryleeigrl

Childish. Read like a children's story. Felt like it was written in a week. What a letdown.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Wow, loved it! One of those books you can't put down once you start

Grayer and duller without Neil. I should preface this by saying, I've never met a Neil Gaiman writing that I didn't love! And to paraphrase Mr. Gaiman: life without his writings would be grayer and duller. This book is so very engaging, sweet, scary, and original. Absolutely love it!

TejWho

The Ocean at the End of the Lane. A tremendously engaging read, full of vibrant emotion and interesting characters. At one point, this book has you flipping through the pages like there's no tomorrow. Neil Gaiman is one of the premier writers of our time, with excellent contributions to television (Doctor Who, Neverwhere, Babylon 5), comics (The Sandman--DC comics, and several others--I think Marvel as well), and novels (American God's, e.c.t.) Bottom line--you should read this book!

EnglishMinor

The Ocean at the End of the Lane. I read the previous reviews, convinced this would be a real treasure, but not so for me. I would rather sort through the imagery of the book of Revelations as to make sense of this. I hung in there to the end, endlessly hoping that it would ultimately fall into place and make it worth the effort. Isolation and the helplessness of childhood and the kindness of strangers making it bearable I get. But what a strange approach. My first Gaiman. Maybe I'm too literal for his style.

Monitorboy

A real classic. Neil Gaiman delves into childhood memories for The Ocean At The End Of The Lane, memories that I think folks my age can relate to. Not specific things in the story, but the feel and aura of growing up, of being seven years and the world being big and magical and yes, scary. When I finished the book, I thought about Lettie Hempstock's ocean, of memory, reality and forgetting. It's all an illusion. Maybe, like our unnamed narrator, we are the same person throughout our lives: we have only forgotten what we were. Gaiman's book is a delight to read, his prose is so fluid and the pacing of the story keeping you reading.

ClashCR77

Longer than its # of pages. Terrific story! Probably my new favorite Neil Gaiman novel. Such a short book but what an immense tale. Bravo!

Abweaver1s

Neil Rocks. I loved this book. It's a short read though.

AZreviewwriter

Dark, Scary, Joyful & Childlike. This is Neil Gaiman at his very best: regular people doing regular things against a dark & wonderful backdrop.

Quinma

Beautiful. There's nothing I could say to convince you to read this book if you're going to judge a Neil Gaiman book by the reviews. Seriously, just buy it.

Eh. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.........

Mdbrit66

The Ocean at the End of The Lane. Absolutely wonderful. Very touching in parts; some of the story really made me emotional. I enjoyed it so much I can't wait to read it all over again.

Jwheelock

Fantastic. If you think about it, it's a story about reading a story. It's great and fantastic, but when you're done...it's like a shadow fading into the dusk. Worth reading a couple times.

SarahMary09

Neil Gaiman. I don't read many fantasy stories but choose this for summer reading and I'm glad I did. I related to many of the quotes on the character's reflection of his childhood. It held my attention and was a quick and easy read.

I Kant tink of a nicknam

Weird. Weird story. Waste of money and the time I spent reading it hoping it would get better or make sense

OneMaineDay

Perfectly Magical. How is it that we forget truths we knew when we were children and believe the ridiculous we see on TV? Neil Gaiman has written a novel that transports us back and forth from childhood with a faint memory of what was. Thank you for reminding me of the magic and wonder that I once lived. By the way, who measures the merit of a book by its length, anyway?

Artgurliee

Thrilling. Amazing book:). Finished reading it in four hours or less. I used a Barnes and noble gift card to get the book price down to around three dollars and plan to loan the book to friends. If you are short money for the book try selling back old books to stores for cash or have a garage sale. I'm pretty frugal so that's how I fulfill most of my entertainment financing needs. Also, you can take turns buying books with friends and family or find a town that has a library book sale where you can get good deals. This book was worth the price for such a thrilling ride.

Nameisunavailable

Simply put: beautiful.. I've been a huge fan of Neil Gaiman's for a very long time, and I am embarrassed by how quickly I allowed myself to devour this book. Frightening at moments, emotional at others, and completely heart-warming, this may be the best thing I've ever read of his.

BrainyGeekyGuy

Awesome!. I loved this book!!!

WP-GJM

Best seller doesn't mean good book. I bought it because it was on the best seller list. Read it, didn't like it!

TheJBRU

A very touching novel. I loved this book. There were several times where I found myself tearing up and couldn't identify why, exactly, that was happening. To me, that was a sign that Gaiman was touching something deep that I didn't fully understand. Some memory that was in resonance with the scene he was describing. I'll be re-reading it this weekend. This is one of the most true and most honest pieces of fiction that I have read.

Huggie Face

Missed the point. I must have read the wrong book. The book I read was about a lonely kid that befriended an odd family that battled weird creatures. Magical? Emotional? Ehh....Not for me.

Jefftx08

The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Best book I've read this summer. An excellent story from an exceptional storyteller!

RDD47

Ocean at the end of the Lane. First book I have read using the online method. Was looking for a mystery. Got one with this book. I am 65 and it was way over my head. Some things I liked. Author thinks outside the box. His imagination is great. I am old fashion. Boy gets girl and rides off into the sunset. Sorry.

Martagirl39

Just an opinion. Wasn't that impressed. Was looking for a fairy tale but it was just a weird story that I couldn't bring myself to care about.

Tutankuamen

The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Excellent. It's a slow starter, but so very worth it in the end.

Voelker58

I'm sorry you're poor.. Since when does the price of a book have ANYTHING to do with how good it is? Everyone posting 1-star reviews because of the price makes me sad. Read the book. Get it from the library. Borrow it from a friend. Steal it if you have to. Then come back here and write a review based on the merit of the work. If you don't like the price, write an angry letter to the publisher, or ask your boss for a raise. You are obviously Gaiman fans, or else you wouldn't be here. Why would you do that to him? Do you think he set the price? Really? Shame on you!

Polarbean

The Ocean At The End Of The LANE. MAGIC! Thank -you Neil Gaiman for making MAGIC for me!

Yzpresto

Beautiful. Funny and magical with great insight into the minds of both adults and children

Eatnow

Not a fan. I was not a fan of this book. I thought it tried to hard and found it hard to stay focused. I did not really understand the story behind the family of women. Just not for me.

Saiaii

Worth it. A fairy tale for adults, entertaining dreams and what seems real to children. It will make you wonder, and anything that makes one wonder these days is well worth the read. Complete, with a real ending...so many authors skimp on the ending.

Mmkat99

Ok. Keeps you reading but is 100% a children's book.

Sumwon76

Surprising... This story captured me right away... I couldn't put it down, and when it was over I wanted to start it all over again. Beautifully written, and touched my spirit! Loved it!

ToriBrant

Amazing. For someone that is not an avid reader it really takes a lot to keep my attention. THIS BOOK DID!!!! I found myself entranced into the world of the book and did not want it to end!!!

JennyKansas

Ocean is a glimpse into Mr. Gaiman himself. Reading Gaiman's interviews about the book & how deeply personal the story truly is allowed me to enjoy & understand the book in a way that I otherwise could not have. Knowing the emotions behind the book turned a good story into an amazing one. The supernatural is blended into the landscape of Gaiman's own childhood beautifully. He tells an incredible, honest story in a relatively small number of pages, making its impact even more powerful somehow.

CFCNJD

Captivating, tremendously written. I plowed through this novella in a handful of hours, but that had little to do with its length. The story is captivating and grabs you immediately with its protagonist reminiscing about memories that had been suppressed. The way Gaiman is able to craftily, yet simply use powerful words to awake in his reader's what it was like to remember when they're young is amazing. The book definitely was haunting in a few places and sad, but it's a frame story told from an older man seeing things as he saw them as a seven year old. I can't say enough about it and how well crafted it is and how the prose is beautifully chosen to illicit emotions from its reader.
