An astonishing novel about redemption and forgiveness from the “amazingly talented writer” (HuffPost) and #1 New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult.

Some stories live forever...

Sage Singer is a baker. She works through the night, preparing the day’s breads and pastries, trying to escape a reality of loneliness, bad memories, and the shadow of her mother’s death. When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sage’s grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Despite their differences, they see in each other the hidden scars that others can’t.

Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secret and asks Sage for an extraordinary favor. If she says yes, she faces not only moral repercussions, but potentially legal ones as well. With the integrity of the closest friend she’s ever had clouded, Sage begins to question the assumptions and expectations she’s made about her life and her family. In this searingly honest novel, Jodi Picoult gracefully explores the lengths to which we will go in order to keep the past from dictating the future.

Great read. This book has so many details but it's a thriller. Can't put it down. Jodi had some it again.

Karenhutz

The Storyteller. Excellent book! I wished the author would not have ended the book without finishing the main character and her life. What happened to Sage? Does she move? What about Sage and Leo? What happens to them?

KRei9168

Her best book yet!. Love all of her books. This one was above and beyond anything I could have imagined or asked for. A MUST read!

At an age when as a Jewish American I have known survivors of Auschwitz. Survivors of Auschwitz’s horrorors and the dreadful March fromAushwitz to Bergen-Belson…one in particular Magda Hershberger who lectured about her experience at many university’s until her death 2 years ago. As an artist I traveled back to the shtetl of David Horodok and documented some of the remains of that small village ,the killing fields and forests where the Jews were murdered. I also documented the death camp of. Madanek This was in 1998 The cemetery memorial has been destroyed and redone at least 3 times since then because of willful desecration

Couldn’t put it down!. Very interesting & informative…took a few very unexpected turns.

Storyteller. Incredible!! I couldn't stop reading it.

BranniesM

Great!. Loved this book! For sure Picoult's best book. So different from her usual and so much better.

Sanchi12838

The Story Teller. I absolutely loved this book! It was hard to put down. Of all of Jodi’s books this is my favorite. The historical fiction and detail make you long for more information. She constantly have you on your toes asking for more.

SandeeLou

Great blending. Multiple stories in one. The grandmother's, the story the grandmother writes, Sage's, Leo's, and the two brothers'. 6 different voices and perspectives, 2 completely different stories all blended so carefully and masterfully to make 3 different genres: Horror/Fantasy, Historical and Modern Romantic Mystery. Page turning, engrossing and thought provoking. Absolutely loved it.

Apruiz27

Amazing. Had me hooked from the being! Sometimes in tears & others smiling! I loved it! A must read!

Kackster

Great book. It was hard to get into this book at first, but I'm glad I stayed with it because it eventually grips you. It's so difficult to read about the atrocities of the Holocaust, but this book tells both sides of the story. The characters are well developed and unique...and the ending had an unexpected twist.

Mellymelly89

Amazing!. Absolutely loved it! Page turner all the way through! Ending took me for a huge surprise! Must read for all Jodi Picoult fans!

HaloDoc

One of the best books I have ever read. This book is the best book I have ever read on the holocaust. The way Jodi Picoult weaves the characters into the story and how they all become intertwined is absolutely amazing. You can't help but feel what Sage, the main character is going through. I kept asking myself, what would I do if I was Sage. I still don't have an answer.

Svggirl67

Awesome !!!!!. Really enjoyed this book. !!!!!! Thank you for creating a wonderful story line, great characters, and an interesting 360 view. I was getting very bored of " same old, same old , drama mystery, detective story". I'll be reading more of your books.

JennyA2

Loved it.. It was a great read!!! i loved the characters and hearing their side to the story was fantastic. Would definitely recommend this book.

T_t_1982

Not as expected. I've read all of Jodi's books and loved them all. I believe she is a brilliant author. This book, however, I was very disappointed in. Of course the subject in itself is heartbreaking, and I had a hard time even finishing the book. It was gruesome and disappointing.

15 is cool

I fell in love.. The Storyteller was one of the best books I have ever read. The way she described the Holocaust from both the point of views of a Nazi and a survivor were just on point. Loved it.

Jhnyh58;,

Chocmid08. Seriously an amazing book! Worth the price! Jodi Picoult is an amazing author!

Bunkmama

Amazing story!. I've never had the holocaust presented in such a realistic way. As usual Jodi weaves the past and present together with such amazing detail. Love all her books, this is my new favorite.

Fascinating read. I picked up The Storyteller and couldn't put it down. It is a fascinating read with all kinds of twists and turns. I cried many a time while reading this book. There were parts that were extremely hard to read without crying. The story within the story was amazing. I don't know how you wrote it because it is at times painful to read but I am so glad you did. Thank you Jodi.

Larsons45

Compelling reading. Truly enjoyed reading this compelling book. I was captivated from the begin. The story teller won’t disappoint the reader.

Jimminy crick3t

The Storyteller. One of her best yet. Totally riveting. I read it in two or three days because I couldn't put it down.

Ameta

Just ok!. I am a huge fan of Jodi Picoult's but this book and the Lone Wolf have both been hard for me to get into the storyline. The Lone Wolf I trudged thru and finally ended her. This , The Storyteller ended up being good but it took so long to get to the meat of the story that I almost gave up! It ended up being a beautiful story.

Bunmom88

Excellent. Really enjoyed reading. I frequently recommend this book to people.

Angela Mandas

The best!. The best book I've read. It is thrilling, traumatizing and a page turner for sure! I started it on a 5 hour plane ride and read continuously for 4 hours. You would love it although I was sad reading about the torture at the camps. It reads like a history documentary but with strength and determination of a woman.

Could be shorter

Too lengthy. I usually love Jodi Picoult books but this one left me a little disappointed. It is extremely well written and informative and really brings tears to your eyes when reading the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust. At the same time- it is too drawn out and long and some of the story lines that come together at the end could have been omitted. All in all it is a good read but I skipped entire chapters- would have been better if a little shorter.

Jack_466

Not like her other books. I expected a classic Jodi book but was disappointed. The horror of the holocaust is not what I wanted in a book from her. Very disappointed.

👏😊☺😉😝😛😝

stellar read. By far my favorite book of all time. Picoult captivates readers in a series of point of view changes and a forever changing story. This is the kind of book that when you finish, you sit back, and stare at a ceiling for 3 days. Insanely good.c

Miss.le

Awesome!. I couldn't put this book down! The best book that I've read in a long time!

Jacquiblueyes

Kept Me in Suspense. I enjoyed this book. I found I could not stop reading. The graphic descriptions of WWII Poland and The concentration camp was difficult to read, but written beautifully. The ending was a surprise.

Henmar61

The Storyteller. As usual, I'm not disappointed by Jodi's newest novels. Amazing weave of fiction and non fiction into a new story. I love how Jodi takes topics in our society and makes you question yourself with moral issues and challenges your thoughts. Thank you!

Stsomewhere2

Not what I expected. Good book gave it four stars but very depressing! Not the ending I expected. It left me haunted.

Sueballs

Wow. Loved the book

Emily-IN

One of my favs. Such a good book kept me wanting to read more all the way to the end!

Flat and Stale. I looked forward to reading this book as I have read many books surrounding the Jewish Holocaust (due to my family’s history) and there are so many well-written books on this topic. This book is probably the worst I have read in this genre. I wish I had not wasted my money (another benefit if I had gone to the library and checked the book out instead). First: The main character (Sage - which is ironic and would have been amusing had this book been a comedy) isn’t even likable. Her “woe is me” attitude is unbelievable given the context this book deals with the Holocaust. Second: The book is slow. Third: The friendship between Sage and Joseff doesn’t feel natural, nor believable due to the lack of substance. Fourth: The vision of Jesus in the bread loaf? Really, that was just plain silly. Lastly, the only good part of the book is Minka’s story and there is nothing new or fresh. It’s not written with feeling in my opinion. The book is just flat. This is the 2nd book of Picoult's that I've tried to read and I guess it boils down to the fact that I don't like her writing style so it’s time to move on. I seriously don't know how this book got so many 5-star ratings.

Rosenzw

The Storyteller by Jodi Piccoult. This book was an amazingly realistic portrayal of one woman's experience in the Holocaust, as told by her granddaughter. As a child of Holocaust survivors myself, I could relate and connect to this book so much because it made me feel as if I was in the Lodz ghetto and experiencing the daily terror of Auschwitz when children were senselessly killed and innocent men and women were brutalized. I loved the way the author Jodi Piccoult interleaved the contrasting German Nazi's perspective on becoming an SS Officer with the perspective of a Holocaust survivor. Though this book is fiction, it is based on truth and is a very vivid portrayal of a hellish time in history, and yet it touches the human element so sensitively. It also raises questions of morality, euthanasia, revenge, and survival. Love, friendship, trust and loyalty are recurring motifs throughout this novel. The ironic twists and turns also make this book so enjoyable. This is one of Jodi Piccoult's best books, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about the Holocaust and it's impact on our world today.

Quipodaliaphobia

Brilliant and moving!. When they say a picture is worth 1000 words I declare this book to be worth 1000 pictures. This story is painted vividly and I could visualize the characters well enough to feel as if they are sitting in the room next to me, I must say that this story is significantly better than any realistic-fiction books I have read. It is written so beautifully that you can feel the hunger, smell the pastries, touch the fear. I highly recommend this book and commend Picoult for a wonderful read.

EAF2775

The Storyteller. The story is compelling and masterful. I found it a little difficult to understand at the beginning but then got hooked. I read it in two days. It is a haunting tale of evil and forgiveness.

Sticks500

Her worst. The only one of hers I didn't finish -- and I have enthusiastically read them all. Very disappointing.

VikkiO578

The Storyteller. I've enjoyed all the Picoult books I've read, this one makes me want to find out so much more about that terrible time in our history.

Diana1airs

Riveting!. I've never read a Jodi Picoult novel as fast as I read this one - I devoured it. Very well written with a tapestry of intertwining characters and plot twists - the last one was a total and perfect surprise. Having heard and spoken with a Holocaust survivor, I had her pictured as I read, which made it all the more real to me. This is a sensitive and thought-provoking story of one of the most horrid, cruel times in the last hundred years.

LGowner

Interesting book. Loved this book. It keeps your attention. The subject matter can make your skin crawl but at the same time it is a part of history that should not be forgotten. There are still those who would wish to eradicate a part of earth’s population and this book demonstrates the ease of putting this into practice.

IvannaSkoolya

Good book/Long Chapters. I enjoyed this book. The ending made everything worth it. However, many chapters were very long and I felt like it took me forever to finish the book. I kept having to put my bookmark in the middle of chapters. Like I said though, the ending made it all worth it.

Pim50

Once again, a riveting story told by a master storyteller. Just having finished The Storyteller, I’m wondering if there’s another book of Jodi’s to read. I think I’ve read them all. I’ll be waiting anxiously for her next book

Mariellaec

WOW!. This novel captivated my attention from the beginning. Picoult had me laughing, crying and flipping the pages wondering what was going to happen next. She did a fascinating job describing the different angles of the human mind and conjuring the doppelgängers in all of us. possibly one of the best books i have ever read!

Horselover3570

Amazing Story. This is my favorite book from Picoult so far. I would encourage anyone to read it. I couldn’t put it down. It’s been a couple of years since I read it and I’m itching to reread it.

She does it again!. Jodi Picoult writes another spellbinder book. One that you cannot put down. She weaves in and out of characters and stories within stories. Make some tea, bake some bread and curl up with this one.

Fantastic book. This is a fantastic book. Well written, engaging, emotional and educational. Thank you, Jodi.

Austinimartini

Tear jerker. I couldn’t put this book down. What a great story

(Do86)

storyteller. A very thought provoking book by Jodi Picoult I have read all her books and found this one was painful due to her subject, I am old enough to remember WW11 and this was such a terrible nightmare for so many innocent people that a stark reminder should happen for those who do not remember. Well written but awful to remember.

Becrrr

Great book!. This book had me captivated so much so that I ended up baking my own challah bread for the first time so that I could imagine what minka was talking about. It is truly sad that there are people out there that don't believe this could have happened. Great book and sad that I've finished it

Kudra234567

Perhaps her best yet!. Great engaging story!

The Storyteller. Jodi Picoult has taken a piece of almost forgotten history and reminded us of the moral lessons we must never forget: why we must forgive and whom. This is not a story read for entertainment...it is read to remember. The level of detail is staggering. Thank you, Ms. Picoult.

Kateeee

Amazing. I loved this book so much. I found it to be one of Jodi Picoult's best stories. I could not put the book down for days. Highly suggest reading.

Barbie itunes

The Storyteller. I've never taken the time to actually write a review before, but this story was impossible to put down. It sucked me in and made me feel as if I were actually there in the pages. Jodi Picoult is truly a wonderful "storyteller"! I loved it and it will haunt me for a long time. A great read!

Vickwitty

The Storyteller. Just awesome!

Wrong game time

Another great one. I have read every one of Jodi's books and she did not disappoint me, although the end was a bit unexpected, but not in a great way, as we are used to. Still worthy of 5 stars.

Lstapp

The Storyteller. This is an amazing book! Jodi immediately draws you into the story and captivates her audience. I could not put the book down. The history behind her writing is interesting and disturbing. It is hard to imagine the inhumane treatment that repeatedly occurred to the Jews. We must never forget. Thank you for making it come alive. I felt like I was there with the characters. I highly recommend this book. I plan to read more of the history. Thank you for the references.

Lm12kbbgf

Impeccable!. Jodi is truly gifted! This may be my favorite of all her books (and yes, I've read them all!). Way to go!

Tigertrace

Long. Following 3 different story lines was a bit much. Very long and drawn out.

Shanna4444

Amazing. I have read so many books that I forget about most of them. This one I will never forget. I read it in one day...I could not put it down. I have read all of her books and this one is by far her best. I highly recommend everyone read this.

Tracey60

Kept me interested!. I could not put this story down!! Jodi did a wonderful job with all the research and characters! She is my favorite author. Can't wait for her next book.

ConstantReader2

Spellbinding. Story within story - very hard to put down. Amazing descriptions of places, people, emotions, and motives.

Morolake A

Amazing Book. I picked up this book simply because it was by Picoult, I had no idea I had picked up a holocaust story. I found my self unable to put it down, disappointed when it switched from one story to the next because I always wanted to know what happened next. One of the best books I have ever read! Picoult does an amazing job depicting scenes, as if she were actually there.

Heress

Excellent. I was sorry when the story ended it was so good hard to put done excellent on all levels

KyFlorida

Captivating Read. Fascinating book. Jodi Picoult does it again! I couldn't put it down. Great fiction and impressive historical read as well. Loved it.

Bread maker

Outstanding. Picoult has outdone herself with this book. I have read all of her books and this one, by far, is the best.

Kellykrew99

Never disappoints. Jodi Picoult never disappoints! I'm not sure that Sage's mother's death means anything in the overall scheme of the book, but it was a great story by a great story teller.

Pandorapink

The Storyteller. A great book that was a bit slow at the start but then kept me on the edge of my seat and I could not put it down. The historical perspective of the Holocaust left me so saddened because it became so much more real. Definitely a must read!

LMVincent

Couldn't stop reading. Mrs. Picoult gives us characters that most of us would automatically hate, without consideration. She makes us look deeper into each human being and gives us a glimpse into the whole person. She makes her readers see the world differently than we did before. She is truly gifted.

Jack_Mali

😍. This is the one of the best Jodi Picoult books I have read! (and I have read all but a few) It really made me think and I couldn't put it down!! I was sad when it was over! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

SPBerko

The Storyteller. Beautifully written story that grabs you from the first page and holds you till the last page.

Isagenix consultant

Unlike any other Jodi picoult book!!. My favorite Jodi picoult book ever... What a beautiful story that gave me tears and and chills...3 stories in one...be patient as it is hard to follow at first but totally worth it (typical picoult) truly wonderful...amazing that these things happened to good loving people...enjoy!

RACHEL MCDOWELL

Loved!. Another great Jodi Picoult novel. I thought this one was a little different than her usual form, which made me love it more.

Sly gray

The Storyteller. It was just "okay". Slow reading at times and unrealistic.

*W*~*A*

Amazing. As always, I live her work!

Daisydee90030

Excellent. This book was very hard to put down. Although, the Holocaust portion pulled at my heart, i had to know the ending. Jodi Piccoult is an excellent writer.

Arnie747

The Storyteller. In one word, an extraordinary book. I am a Jodi Picoult "fan" but have not loved or even liked all of her novels. This one was a departure -- it did not, per se, present a core ethical issue, but a myriad of them. The core was obviously the era and impact of the Holocaust, written in remarkable detail, and the gut wrenching stories of its participants. I have visited Yad Vashem in Israel a number of times and also have met a number if Holocaust survivors. As such, I am familiar with this tragedy and horror of human cruelty. But this perspective, and the human lives shaped by it, and further in the context of Minka's novel, was as complete a reading experience as I have ever had. Thank you Jodi. Arnie Reiter

KimThePoolGirl

Could not put it down!. What an amazing read! I have always been fascinated by the Holocaust - as a teenager I read every book I could get my hands on. I love (and yet hate) the pictures she so vividly painted in my imagination. I loved the allegory she used throughout the story - very clever author. I look forward to experiencing more of her writings.

Phizzle

Couldn't put it down. One of the best Jodi Picoult has written!

Tecfab

Surprisingly good. I must admit I am not a great fan of this author. I usually get a bit bored with her writing. However I purchased this book intrigued by the premise of forgiveness posed by Wiesenthal. And because of the reviews. So I offer my own agreement that it is hard to put down. I enjoyed the characters and the insight into how someone becomes a monster. The journey through the stages of isolation of the Jews and the interaction of the women as they struggled to survive was poetic. The ending...well done.

Magazine?

Awesome Book!!. I love all of her work but this.....this surpasses it all......so amazing and gripping.....it's a must read!!!!

Bdus69

The Storyteller. This was by far my favorite book by this author. I could not put it down, as it made me question life as we know it. The characters were rich and the story revealed history to me much in the way, the book Unbroken did.

Db8082

What a story.... This was a great story is all I can say. I don't read much fiction but I've been deep into this book since the first chapter. I love the history mixed with today. I highly recommend.

Alvinb

Great Book. Fantastic book amazing how people can be so evil.

Nicole Ladia

Page turner. Although not my favorite of Jodi's books, I still found myself staying up till the wee hours of the night rationalizing with myself "just one more chapter!" The character development and story line keeps you on the edge of your seat. I just wish the ending wasn't as abrupt as it was! I fell in love with the characters and desired more!

Vi city

Fabulous. Although this books becomes a little dark, you can't put it down. It's definitely one that I would recommend to everyone.

Esimono

Love this author. I have read a lot of Piccoult's books and this one was very good. Even as a fictional novel, the Holocaust parts of the story were difficult to read because you know those parts were based on facts. Still, an excellent read, and as always there is some twists!

NikiaReads

The Storyteller. This was my first time reading a book by this author. I have seen one of her books to movies. This book was phenomenal! Very good story. Loved the way the story was told from multiple perspectives... FANTASTIC STORY!!

Bookworm1987

Excellent!!!. This is by far the best book that she has written! Absolutely wonderful, can not wait to see what she comes up with next!

Ealdinger

The Storyteller. Fabulous book. I could not put it down. I bought it by accident when I hit the wrong button, but I am so glad I did! Now I want to get other books from this author.

Marby76

The Storyteller. Amazing. Excellent writing.

Nikki22097

Amazing story!. I can't say enough about this book. I am truly amazed at the talent she displays throughout the book. A must read!!!

TravelingMomof2

Excellent!. Very different than her other stories but just as gripping and poignant, if not more so because its based on real events of the Holocaust. Difficult to read at times because of this but worth the sadness. Character development is great as always. The end was not what I expected but not a dreaded cliffhanger with no real story finality or an implausible one. It's actually multiple stories in one and can be challenging at times, until at least you understand the format and story lines, to follow. It's also long but not too much so. It was a nice surprise from her past few novels, both for its content and the storyline intensity. Read it!

LorettaCNM

The Storyteller. A great story and a wonderful read. I could not put it down! I love Jodi Piccoult and am never disappointed in her books. I highly recommend the book!

Leen3d

BORING. OMG! This was the WORST book I've read in years. The story dragged on and on...

Rmfvt4me

The Storyteller. One of her very best! Very thought provoking and captivating. Would highly recommend.

Granniejo

The storyteller. I loved this book !! She weaves a great story.

Bryantcto

Storyteller. I enjoyed the suspense of this story. So have only read two books by her, including this one and both have been good. I learned a great deal about the holocaust that I never knew and it was eye opening and I found myself wanting to learn more. I could have done without the fictional piece that was written by one of the characters, but in the end it came together.

MommaF123

The Storyteller. As a reader I was held captive the entire book. It makes you think of moralistic decisions you would make in your own life. It makes you think and understand how all characters thought and behaved under the worst of circumstances. I don't read books on this time period as they are too difficult. This one is different. Unless you read it you won't understand why. I thank the author for writing it and I am thankful I read it.

Worth a 2nd read

Amazing. This was truly a captivating novel. Like always, Picoult challenges your morals and your intellect. Somehow the plot was not restricted to the pages in the novel, it traveled with me every time I closed the book. As I was reading, I watched Holocaust videos, read about WWII, and translated several passages into German. I had become invested in the story. The ending will leave you craving more.

Kenevins

Another winner. Picoult always manages to keep my interest. Her characters are well developed and there is always a meaty ethical dilemma to consider. Although I saw this plot twist well before it was revealed, the story still held my interest.
