Broken Harbor by Tana French
Broken Harbor by Tana French Book Summary
From Tana French, author of the forthcoming novel The Hunter, a New York Times bestselling novel that “proves anew that [Tana French] is one of the most talented crime writers alive” (The Washington Post).
“Required reading for anyone who appreciates tough, unflinching intelligence and ingenious plotting.” —The New York Times
Mick “Scorcherˮ Kennedy is the star of the Dublin Murder Squad. He plays by the books and plays hard, and thatʼs how the biggest case of the year ends up in his hands.
On one of the half-abandoned “luxuryˮ developments that litter Ireland, Patrick Spain and his two young children have been murdered. His wife, Jenny, is in intensive care. At first, Scorcher thinks itʼs going to be an easy solve, but too many small things canʼt be explained: the half-dozen baby monitors pointed at holes smashed in the Spainsʼ walls, the files erased from the familyʼs computer, the story Jenny told her sister about a shadowy intruder slipping past the houseʼs locks. And this neighborhood—once called Broken Harbor—holds memories for Scorcher and his troubled sister, Dina: childhood memories that Scorcher thought he had tightly under control.

Broken Harbor. Very good storyline, right up to date. But the people talked too much. Not realistic. Enjoyed it and read to the end. I will read another book by the same writer.
Broken Harbor. To drawn out
Another great book by Tana French. Another amazing and powerful journey into the complexity of human relationships, disguised as a murder mystery. At first i wasn’t sure i wanted to read a novel narrated by Scorcher Kennedy, but i’m glad i did. Really enjoyed it! Couldn’t put it down. I’ve noticed some reviewers saying this novel doesn’t resolve itself, but as they say in Dublin, that’s bollicks! The story comes to a very satisfying conclusion.
Awful!!. Not only did the characters talk too much … they were BORING. I found I did not care about any of them. Will not read another of her books.
Broken Harbor. Good til the last page. So very, very sad
Broken Harbor. Tana French has once again written a book I could not put down. The characters are vivid and true. The story is unique and thrilling. As good as "In The Woods" !
Too bleak for me..l. I usually Ike dark stories with flawed characters but this lot was just too one dimensional --- i really didn't care what became of any of them. Some might say the covers were too far apart and I would agree!
good writer-- this story not so good. I've read several of Tana French's books. This one I enjoyed the least. I think it was the format and the extended dialogue sections and the lack of development of some of the peripheral characters like Richie and Dina. Also the situation of the story wasn't realistic to me. By that I mean the plot. Setting is great and that wonderful poetic style of writing is why I usually like her books. I got tired of the first person narrator and a lot of the story is repetitive. Could eaisly have been shorter by 200 pages and would have been a better read.
Enjoyed the detail. One of the things that I enjoy most about Ms. French's books are her detailed descriptions of her character's and their thoughts. Several reviewers found her descriptions "too drawn out". When considering to purchase this book you may wish to consider the type of fiction you prefer. If you do not like detailed descriptions of character's thoughts and actions, you may find her work boring. If you enjoy those descriptions and the complex narrative that results from this style, you are likely to find the book very satisfying.
Broken harbor. Fantastic read One her best books!! A must!!!
Wonderful!!. I wish it wasn't so long between books but it was worth the wait.
More than an exquisite procedural. I didn’t know what to expect of Scorcher Kennedy after the glimpse of him in Faithful Place. However, the more I read, the more I understood him and his choices. Tana French has written an intimate procedural and importantly, an honest look at how one’s perceptions and coping mechanisms are shaped and tested by the hardest events. French doesn’t shy away from the difficulties and injustices that humans create and endure. Scorcher Kennedy is beautifully complex and vulnerable. Watching him gain wisdom is an added bonus. Just, thanks.
It was okay.... This was probably the least favorite of mine. The narrators voice just didn't intrigue me as much. It felt tedious at times and I just wasn't drawn in as much. I also found it a little predictable. Her other books I couldn't put down. If you've only ready this one and didn't care for it, I would still try another one of hers.
Good not great. This is a good book: very well written with well-imagined characters, and a believable plot until the very end where it wraps up a bit too easily for all concerned. The relationships: detective partners, the detective and his sister, the detective's dead mother hovering over Broken Harbor, are all very good, and the portrayal of his challenging sister is true to life (trust me, I know). I'll look forward to more books from Ms. French.
Good. This writer loves leaving loose ends. I keep waiting for every detail to be unfolded and tied up nicely at the end - and it never is. It leaves for a non-compelling ending and a story that feels unfinished. The 'who-did-it' reason is never good or fully believable. And yet, I still keep reading her books, so I suppose that's something.
Not her best work. Tana French has a distinct talent for conveying the role of place and how it is central in forming the past and present identities of her characters. In Broken Harbor, set against the backdrop of an Irish beach landscape ravaged by the ambitions of developers in the last days of the real estate boom, French returns to these themes, but her main character Scorch Kennedy--who recounts the story in first person--is less believable than her previous narrators. It's still a decent read, just disappointing after earlier books like Faithful Place.
Broken Harbor. Intense, couldn't put it down, read every one she's written, want MORE! The characters pull you into their world for a long dramatic ride. I think Tana French's books would make good movies. I felt sad to come to the last pages of this book along with the other three. Could the writer bring together the 3 or 4 main characters for another great drama? I can only dream... Thanks Again, I and thousands of other fans wait for her next mystery, Susan Robin in Michigan@@@
Broken harbor. Amazing book! Highly recommend!
Broken harbor. Breaks my heart that there are moments in life that are so terminally painful. The different paths Ms. French's characters take to resolve that pain are beautifully told, and brought me a new level of understanding.
Broken. When I read a police procedural, I hope to find resolution when I reach the end of the book. The end did not offer a big reveal, but it pieced together what I suspected. I think it took too long to get there.
3/4 great. Beautifully written. Perfect setting. Vivid characters. A thrilling plot. BUT wasn't there even one of the many agents and editors thanked that knew anything about eliminating repetitious dialogue? The last quarter of this terrific novel left me feeling as mentally challenged as the major characters. Maybe that was the point. Tiresome. How delightful it would have been with judicious editing. Still worth reading.
Got me hooked on the series. I read this book for a class in Dublin and I’ve been hooked ever since. I love the complexities of the characters and the twist endings
Broken Harbor. Too drawn out.... Good story... Especially toward the end
Painfully slow and nothing like her other books. Tana French became one of my favorite writers after reading "the likeness" ( her best book without a doubt). In The Woods was decent as was Faithful Place. She really took a dive with broken harbor. It was like her publishers were just hounding her for another book so she cranked out a really tedious ( but well-written) detective novel. The hundreds of pages devoted to detailed explanations of the inner workings of being a detective were not compelling. In addition, the story was weak. She was grasping at straws to make this murder mystery seem interesting or gripping at all. I kept waiting for the book to get addictive like her others but it never did. I couldn't believe what a let-down the ending was. She's such a talented writer but the story was just bad. I mean, shockingly bad. Have hopes that her publishers will let off and she'll write something more like "the likeness " again
