P&A. Wore my heart on my sleeve the whole time, it was such a beautiful love story and the fatal ending is what brakes me into pieces.🫠
10/10 Changed the trajectory of my life. Such a beautifully written piece that left me sobbing at 2am. I truly could not stop reading, whether you enjoy stories of Greek mythology or not, you will not regret purchasing The Song of Achilles.
Tears. This book had me in literal tears. It is so good. Highly recommend to any Greek mythology lovers and hopeless romantics.
Absolutely STUNNING. This book really has me bawling my eyes out at 11:30pm on a Wednesday. AMAZING! 10/10 recommend.
Oh my god?. Oh my god?
Thank god it’s over. Unless you’re a sappy teenager, read something else.
Heart wrenching. A beautiful story.. I could not put it down! I was glued, hooked on to every word. No words can absolutely describe how amazingly this book made my heart leap, love, and break so much.
Emotional rollercoaster. Do yourself a favor and read this book!
Amazing. This is a new favorite. The way Miller adapted the classic Iliad into a romance was beautifully seamless. I love Greek Mythology and I can’t recommend this book enough. 11/10.
It’s bad. Amateur writing, no worth reading
Historical and romantic. Amazing
Breathtaking. The emotions that are portrayed through the words reached my heart. It’s beautiful. Really well written. 10/10 will recommend
Dilynne b.. I don’t know how to explain it, I have never felt such strong feeling about a book before. I feel so emotionally attached to all the characters in some special way and I love them like they are my own family. When it was over I sobbed because I didn’t want it to be over. I wish I could read it for the first time again. I love this book and it will forever hold a special place in my heart and I hope people can feel the same amount of love and appreciation I have for this book. I also have to add that the way she words everything really makes a picture in my head I can imagine, i. An smell, hear, and feel everything, she describes everything so beautifully.
Stunning. I’m certainly going to read it again.
Absolutely loved. I could not put this down when I started. A great twist on the Greek story everyone has heard it wasn’t drawn out and it was wonderfully written
One of my favorites. Simply one of my favorites. It was hard to put this one down.
At a loss for words. I have no words that can accurately describe the profound effect this book had on me. Truly marvelous.
Captivating and Indulging. I thoroughly enjoyed losing myself in the profundity of emotions and vivid imagery. I found myself craving more of the plot with each sentence. I would have loved to know a small portion past the ending, but that’s just how good it is.
The best book. The way this touched me in so many ways. It still leaves me breathless.
Good story!!. Nice!!
captivating, beautiful retelling. Madeline Miller delivers a divine, heart-wrenching telling of the famous Greek myth. I was skeptical coming in, seeing how popular and hyped up the book has become, but this novel pulls you in from the beginning and does not let go. The story of Patroclus and Achilles is told in a whole new light and takes readers on a beautiful, unforgettable journey. I finished this book only yesterday and already wish I could experience it again for the first time. Miller’s artistic storytelling is nothing short of perfection, and although we know the tragic ending we can’t help but come along for the ride.
Creative and Fun, but Fast!. I loved the author’s retelling of a classic myth. It included fresh elements of love, internal conflict, and action. Patroclus was a relatable character given his difficult upbringing, internal conflicts, and longing for an “unattainable” lover like Achilles. Skipping through years in the middle of chapters felt like the story was rushed. The author could have included more detail in the events with Chiron and the boys. They learned so much from him, and I don’t know if it was fully revealed to the reader. I wonder if it would have been valuable to create whole books dedicated to the lives of Patroclus and Achilles separately, then together leading into the war.
A Must Read!!. Not for the light hearted of people. A book that takes an old story and makes it live anew. This book was one that seized every sense and emotion inside of me. I felt joy, love, anger and most of all sadness. The book is a masterpiece if not anything.
love. the best
My new obsession. I haven’t read a good romance book in years and then I found “song of Achilles”. I have been searching for a book that makes me feel even remotely to how this book left me. It’s a romance that goes past base desires and is almost poetic in the way that the author tells their story. There were a few scenes that felt unnecessary, but that is my only complaint. This was the book that reignited my love of reading and I highly suggest it.
Beautiful. This book was the best book I've ever read ❤️. I honestly prayed to Achilles one night and a week later meet my Boyfriend of 2 years now. I will always have a strong connection towards and amazing written book!
Love it. Best book I’ve ever read
Excellent. Heartfelt and engaging
Beautifully written. Beautifully written love story between Achilles and Patroclus.
my “roman empire”. I was gifted this book for my birthday in 5 years ago and DEVOURED it. Since then I’ve read it 5 times, bought 2 covers, and have heavily annotated my copy. (I even took it to the bottom of the Grand Canyon for a month long expedition!!). As someone who LOVES greek mythology and was heavily closeted and insecure about my sexuality, seeing this romantic and comfortably queer take on this story was incredibly important to me. This book is beautifully written and tragically poetic.
Good writing overall. I truly enjoyed the book, but it was not written from Achilles’ point of view but his boyfriend Patroclus. This book was a little too “gei” for me, the moments where they kept kissing and sleeping naked was not my style at all. As a heterosexual male, this much detail was disgusting and extremely damaging for younger audiences. The world’s youth is confused at it is., this book is not helping. I gave it 3 stars because it is written beautifully by the author, but the “geiness” could use major decreasing and cost the book 2 stars from me. People love this book, I can see why, just not my cup of tea at all.
Excellent. I have forgotten most of my mythology but this was a wonderful refresher. It’s an interesting look on Achilles. My book club read and most enjoyed it.
I LOVE THIS BOOK OH MY GOD. I’m sorry for the strange title but it’s such a lovely book!! Some not-so-kid-friendly stuff sprinkled throughout but there’s also murder so it was never for kids really- anywho it’s a wonderfully sad and romantic story of two lovers. I appreciate that it’s not very accurate to the original characters because it’s told from the perspective of Patroclus. Anyways it’s a very lovely book and I highly recommend it!!
LOVED IT. The pace of the book was consistent and also had you hooked into where the story was taking you!!!
3.5 stars. I wasn’t an emotional mess like some reviewers had mentioned. Solid story, slightly predictable but entertaining and VIVID!
Amazing!. Once of the best books I have read in a while. I devoured it in one sitting, and it left me emotional afterwords. Definitely a must read.
Highly Recommend. A great read! An emotional, sweet, and adventurous story. I will probably read it again and again
I was really wanting to like this…. until it turned into gay porn. I love mythology and love historical romance stories but this was not what I thought I would be reading.
Beautifully narrated. What am I supposed to read after this
searingly beautiful. just read it and weep
Amazing. I could not put this good down. An enduring love story.
Beautiful and Heartbreaking. The prose is fantastic and the story heartfelt and tragic.
WOWOWOOWOW. Most amazing book ever! The writing is extremely beautiful. I can feel the passion the love and the pain. Truly a wonderful read, cried like a baby at the end.
4.5 out of 5. Beautifully written. There is no doubt about Madeline Miller’s skills as a writer. I actually think from a technical standpoint, she’s one of the most gifted writers we currently have. She has just such a way with words and even as someone fairly well-versed in Greek mythology who knows how this all ends, I was hooked as if this was a cast of characters I’d never heard of before. I read Circe first and I found it to be much, much more relatable due to my own personal history and experiences but this book was just as spectacular. I love that this was all told from the point of view of Patroclus. He’s compelling and it’s lovely to see his own story fleshed out. His love for Achilles is touching but I think Achilles eventually becomes so unlikeable that it’s hard to see what Patroclus still sees in him and why he still so readily would give up everything for him. And Achilles himself is seen as complex here! Which is fine! Complex is good and I’m glad that he wasn’t always the attentive, loving, nurturing boy that Patroclus fell for and believed in. I think the story of Achilles here (and eventually Pyrrhus although he’s a much more extreme example) is a fascinating look at masculinity. Achilles is beautiful and sensitive and kind. He loves music and pretty things and nature. We see this throughout. But it isn’t until he starts demanding the treatment he believes he deserves and stamping out all that’s beautiful and tender about him that he could be seen as great and powerful by the world around him. He believes he’s entitled to greatness and he reaches a point where he really buys into his own hype and doesn’t care who he’s harmed as long as he gets what he believes he deserves as this pinnacle of masculinity, the best of the best. He can only become a hero by embracing cruelty and he’d rather be a hero and be remembered by everyone than remembered only by his love, Patroclus: the only person who ever really knew him at all. I’ll be thinking about this book for awhile. It’s hard not to. It’s so rich and textured. I’m giving this a 4.5 instead a 5, only because I started to grow a bit numb from reading cruelty after cruelty and atrocity after atrocity but I can absolutely recognize that that has nothing to do with Miller’s skill as a writer, and has everything to do with my own personal preferences.
Purple Prose. The book is a marvel. The storyline is unique, fresh, and interesting. Each character has depth, and each arc of the story holds importance. You fall in love with Achilles and Patroclus’s love. A tale as old as time, and somehow, more refreshing than ever. If you can get past the purple prose (verbose descriptions) and mildly amateur writing, it’s worth your time. It tries to be whimsical and poetic, and at times you can tell it’s a bit forceful, but the storyline shouldn’t keep you from minding too much.
Beautiful story. This was beautiful, definitely recommend
W O W. Oh My Zeus… this book is everything.
Beautiful. One of the most beautiful, sweet, sad, and tragic love stories I have ever read. The end had me in tears
Impossible to put down. The recommendations to book this were spot on. I found myself reading at any opportunity despite being somewhat of a light reader. Definitely a must-read! 10/10
Beautiful. A beautifully written, captivating tale of love, war and fate. It is rare when a book’s writing is equally as beautiful as the story told. The descriptions of the characters and places are nothing short of exquisite. The emotional and motivational depth of each character is well developed, even down to the cruelest of characters. Reading this book made me feel like I was walking amongst the beautiful beings of Greek myth.

Wow… just wow!!!. One of my favourite books… so beautifully written and a really captivating retelling of the Iliad. Achilles’ and Patroclus’ relationship keeps you ensnared throughout the entire story, right up to the very end. I smiled, I laughed, I cried, I think about this book very often and I hope all Classics fans read this one!
GAWD. DEVASTATED.
Didn’t cry one tear. #justiceforbriseis
It’s Brilliant!. TSOA is absolutely fantastic in my opinion and I’ve just fallen in love with the characters. You can really sense just how they change yet also stay the same in some respects. 10/10, would recommend.
My heart is shattered. I sobbed for an hour, this book will rip your heart out and smash it.
SHATTERED. I AM DESTORYED I LOVED EVERY SECOND OF THIS BOOK
Must Read!. Beautifully written. I couldn’t put it down. Make sure you have a box of tissues with you because you will feel every emotion that exists while reading this book.

Fantastic and heartbreaking. A must read - one of my absolute favourites.
Perfect. Finally an ending I can be content with. Although I ached for more love and connection throughout the book, I suppose that was the point.
Wow!. This book is a must read. Kept me wanting more. Well done.
Brilliant. This book was absolutely amazing. Sweet yet tear-jerking, I envy those who get to read this a first time.
A++++ LGBT representation. This story is something of witchcraft. Absolute magic of a story and is an insight into historical LGBT relationships. Patroclus and Achilles may be my favourite story of all time
This. And this and this. Beautiful, joyous, and heartbreaking. Two halves of a whole. They have made a home for themselves in my heart ♥️
Unacceptable. The author brought me to ancient Greece, fed me figs, and abandoned me there.
Speechless. I read this book in three days. It is beyond beautiful. No words begin to explain how I feel about this book. It is simply a masterpeice.
Very good. Liked it a lot
Good Vibes Only. This book made me find a love for reading again. I haven’t finished a book this fast since I can’t remember when. If you’re in need of a sleepless night to know what happens next, then this book is just for you 😭👏🏼👏🏼❤️

Well. That’s one way to take an epic story and boil it down to one romance. I expected more and got less. If we’re going to modernize ancient texts, maybe not make them so lovey dovey. I didn’t cry. It was a fluff piece. Disappointing, I wanted more Iliad and less one big romance. If you’re into romances then this is the book for you. Also this book borders soft core porn at times. If you’re wondering what’s missing from this, it’s depth. Strips a classic of all its deep meaning and leaves you with another plot for a mediocre HBO drama.
Excellent Read. This was a beautifully written book. I enjoyed looking at the Trojan war through the lens of Achilles’ lover, a lesser character in the original stories. Patroclus’s wise and balanced perspective showed the futility of men seeking greatness through their battlefield exploits. It was his attempts to end the conflict that were truly heroic.
Heartbreakingly beautiful. Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
god. I am crying
5. Honestly this book is just beautiful, I haven’t cried in a while but this just moved me to tears .
love it. i cried . this book is beautiful and amazing
Romantic and Adventurous. This book is beautiful and well written, Madeline Miller is very talented. This book is a MUST READ. There is some brief sexual description content though.
Amazing. Oh my god. Read this book.
Omg amazing. This book was so good! It was so entertaining and perfect. I balled my eyes out so be prepared. I must say it got a little slow in the middle but overall MUST READ. It’s an extremely good book.
No words. Just read it. So beautiful so heartbreaking....wish I could read it again for the first time
Beautiful. this book is everything and more. you will view the world differently in the days after reading it. it is perfect, gutwrenching, and lyrically written. you know what is going to happen but you keep hoping it won’t until the very end. this book makes you experience all of the human range of emotions from joy to sadness.
The Sing of Achilles. Beautifully written, takes the reader into the story so deeply it is hard to swim back to the surface of daily life.
10/10. I truly have never read a book that has moved me like The Song of Achilles. A work of art from beginning to the most beautiful end. 10/10
Entertaining but somewhat misguided. While I’m willing to admit that this novel is entertaining, it misses the target when it comes to recasting the “Iliad”. The novel is based around the story of “the Wrath of Achilles”. Achilles — who is half-god and half-human— refuses to support the Greek troops invading Troy after he is insulted by his arrogant commander-and-chief, Agamemnon. He sulks at his camp during battles while the Greek army is being destroyed. This desolation of the Greek army is supposed to remind the Greeks of his worth toward their cause. It is only after his companion, Patroclus, is killed that Achilles furiously returns to battle. What makes this book interesting is that it is narrated from the perspective of Patroclus, a character that comes and goes throughout the “Iliad.” The problem though is that there is too much of a focus on the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus. The novel spends so much time dedicated to developing the connection between these two characters, and seemingly much less time on the action within the war itself. Therefore the main crux of the book — the war — has much less significance. Also, while there are parts of this novel that are imaginative, creative and thoughtful, there are many moments where the writing is cringeworthy: “He seemed to swell beneath my touch, to ripen. He smelled like almonds and Earth. He pressed against me crushing my lips to wine.” Sections of this book like the quote above are terrible. It sometimes seems like your reading some sort of Greek Mythology soft-core porn. But if you can overlook that major flaw, it’s definitely entertaining. I’m just not sure that it serves justice to the classic original storyline.
Best book I’ve read.. A very good, entertaining book. Definitely recommend.
Spectacular. This book was so beautiful, and of course it made me cry:)
Very interesting!. I don’t think you have to be super knowledgeable about Greek mythology to enjoy this story. It’s a reimagining, so I’m not entirely sure how much is stretched and altered (this is not an area of expertise for me) but it still read well and I enjoyed it! I loved reading of the influence the gods had over the characters and how they were brought to life. It may seem a little boring in some parts if you aren’t super into learning origin stories (we follow Patroclus and Achilles from a young age leading up to the war) but i think it was an interesting tale of life, love, and loss.
I’ve been crying for at least 45 minutes. This book is unlike one I’ve ever read. I fell in love with Achilles and Patroclus. I fell in love with their story and how beautiful and poetic it was. Their story was beautifully written. Thank you for this.
A gorgeous tale of love. Several times this book had me speechless and on the verge of tears. It was written so beautifully; you can almost feel each character. You can literally feel Achilles and Patroclus; I love them, I feel for them, and I believe a piece of them lives in the best and worst of us. They were so honest and raw......I could go on. This is my favorite book of all time, and I would give anything to reread it for the first time. Wow! Wow! Wow! The lover in me is quivering, and if you are anything like me, you will feel the same after reading this novel.
Incredibly Tragic in the most Heartbreaking Way. A modern and new version of a story we’ve all heard before, we all know how it will end, but we stick around for the love.
this is a must read!!. i love this book! it had amazing details and definitely puts you through a heart wrenching journey 🥹
I’m so depressed now in the best way. shattered my heart but reignited the middle school greek mythology obsession i had. so painfully and beautifully well written.
The most authentic, beautiful writing + love story. A beautiful and wrenching love story, that I could not help but finish in one day! This book made me realise/remember how powerful, vigorous and beautiful love can be. The night afterwards, I couldn't help but replay Patroclus and Achilles' relationship over and over again in my head. From the beginning, I developed a great fondness for the two main characters of the book, both of whose redeeming qualities shone through immediately and intensely, so that the readers would root for them and swoon at their intimacy and connection throughout the tale. Their thoughts and feelings from boyhood to manhood, and the evolution of their relationship were all so incredibly authentic and real (from my (a woman's) perspective); the love that they bred was tender and divine. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to read the MOST authentic, touching and the LEAST cheesy/cliche love story between two amazing characters. P.S. This is my new favourite book.
i just.... it was so beautiful and then came the tears
AMAZING. It was beautiful!:)
Fantastic read. Such a wonderful book. More than worth the read!
Tears on tears. This was a beautifully written book. I loved it from start to finish. There were multiple times I cried. It was a sad but perfect ending. For the last few pages, I had my tissues next to me. I would recommend this book to anyone.
WOW. This book was absolutely beautiful. Highly recommend 10/10
Lost interest only a few chapters in. Tired of this theme Circe was much better
Too good not to read. The best book I have read in a awhile. My heart breaks that it’s over but I am so glad I read this. “This and this and this..”
👍. made me sob
absolutely amazing. This book is just so great and beautiful it’s absolutely flabbergasting
Interesting Read. The story from the perspective of Patroclus, is different. I enjoyed it.
Achingly beautiful. I could not put this beautiful story of love, Greek gods and heroics down. The characters feel so real and I’ll be thinking about this story for a long time to come.
Finished!. This whole story took me on a ride and the emotions I was met with…I am so happy to have read this story. Love as it should be.
stop. I am sobbing, this book was so beautiful. An amazing retelling, literally just astounding.
YES. So fricken good. Period.
True Love. To say this was a good book is an understatement. If you like tales of forbidden love, adventure, battles, and words of affection you will love this book. It shows the importance of loyalty and how fragile it can be. It will pull on your heart strings for sure. Definitely will read over and over and get tattoos of my favorite quotes.
Must Read ‼️. One of the best book I have ever read, I’m not much a reader. But I decided to give this book a shot since it was raved so much. The moment I read the first pages I was hook! This book is rollercoaster of emotions and truly have a soft spot in my heart! I can’t express the amount of tears I have shed when reading this book the writing is so beautiful and the storyline is amazing! I would give anything to read this book again!!
Amazing. Great storyline, easy read (I finished it in about 4.5 days), sad but good!
ALove Story for the Gods!. This story was beautifully written. I felt as though I were there, in Pythia, in Troy. I could literally feel and see and smell everything as I read. I cried. I felt bitter hatred. Beautiful storytelling. Highly recommend.
AMAZING. Even though I know the outcome going into this, I am still bawling at 3AM in the morning.. 😭 I love Circe, but this will forever holds a special place in my heart 🥺
Life Changing. I wish I could read this book for the first time all over again. I still get emotional over this now nearly a year later. I don’t know how to explain it, but this book makes me feel like I found something I never knew I was missing and I wish I could have it back. I just don’t think I can reread this considering the how it feels. So like please let me live through you and read it for me.
heart broken. I don’t cry but this book made me ugly sob at one in the morning! Love the book!
One of my favorites. Beautifully written. I read the ending at least 5 times. Loved this. Can’t wait to read her future work!
Amazing! Must read. Wow! Amazing, great read!
The Song of Achilles. I have never known much about the Greek gods and mythology. What a wonderful way to explore the characters. It’s starting to make sense!!
Amazing book, and beautifully written. This book is so good and heart-wrenching. I was intrigued the entire time I read this, and still was when I read it for the second time. Achilles and Patroclus are the definition of soul mates, and their love is so strong you want nothing more than for them to be together and happy. Although the ending is devastating and WILL leave you feeling empty or broken, I think it’s an absolute must-read. 1000/10
Little misguiding title, but amazing story. It’s more a romance than a story about how Achilles accomplishent and story, however it was brilliantly written and DEFINITELY pulled my heart strings
oqkdndjwjwjjdjcjsjwjw. ACHILLIES REGRETED IT.
