Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson
Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson Book Summary
The #1 New York Times bestselling (mostly true) memoir from the hilarious author of Furiously Happy.
“Gaspingly funny and wonderfully inappropriate.”—O, The Oprah Magazine
When Jenny Lawson was little, all she ever wanted was to fit in. That dream was cut short by her fantastically unbalanced father and a morbidly eccentric childhood. It did, however, open up an opportunity for Lawson to find the humor in the strange shame-spiral that is her life, and we are all the better for it.
In the irreverent Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help her uncover the surprising discovery that the most terribly human moments—the ones we want to pretend never happened—are the very same moments that make us the people we are today. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives.

Laughing. I laughed throughout this whole book. Having anxiety issues myself, when the author states it truly is exhausting just being her, I totally understand. I can't wait to read more memoirs from her.
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. Hilarious! Laughed out loud on every page.
Clever girl!. Jenny Lawson has a way with words and is a master at the 'sneak up on you' humor. I literally laughed out loud throughout the entire book. I've saved some of my favorite passages to my phone and take them out when I need a good laugh. Awesome book.
Go ahead read it...you know you want to. Awful language, but absolutely hysterical. I read several parts aloud to friends and family...they loved it!
I wanted to like it. I got this book because it sounded like something I would love. I normally enjoy off the wall humor. The book was silly and it got old fast.
Loved it. I can appreciated her warped sense of humor. One of the funniest books I have read.
Meet my new best friend. If I were lucky enough to have Jenny Lawson as a neighbor and friend, my life would be a whole lot funnier. I desperately want to go shopping with her. A fabulous treat to read this. I'm totally sad it's over.
Rabbit hole. Although she does have an interesting story to tell she spends way too much time going off topic and rambling about things that aren’t real or funny. And just because you use the f word, it doesn’t make the story funny. I just couldn’t get through this book. I tried. I made it over half way and finally asked myself why I was trying so hard. Would not recommend.
Yawn. Yes, this book has some funny passages but it rambles on and on making it easy to get lost in the thought. It would be far funnier if the author didn't try so darn hard. I gave up after reading the first two chapters.
Wonderful book. This book was such an amazing read I had a hard time putting this book down!!!
Hilarious. This book is hysterically funny. If you do not think so, there is something wrong with you and you should probably go and see a doctor.
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. This book was not what I expected, but in a very good way. I loved the humor and the sincerity. Thank you Jenny for sharing your life with your readers!
Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. Much as I dislike leaving a negative review, I think there needs to be another perspective since there are so many positive reviews for this book. I just didn’t care for the style of writing and the humor wasn’t funny to me. I made it 90 pages into the story and just had to stop. I think this is one of those books that just doesn’t suit everyone, but obviously many people loved it!
Lots of laughs!. This book truly made me laugh out loud several times. I love the writer’s casual but witty writing style, and the way she goes off on hilarious tangents reminds me of several of my own conversations with friends. Sometimes we need to just read something that makes us smile, and this book doesn’t disappoint.
Laughed 'til I peed myself. Seriously, one of the funniest reads I have read. My wife would get irritated at night when I was reading this book in bed because I would laugh out loud and wake her up. Then I would have to read her some excerpts of what I just read and she would laugh. She then told 4 of her friends about this "hilarious book my husband has been reading to her in pieces" and they went out and bought the book. You're welcome , Jenny. I just bought and sent the ebook to my father. He will love all the animal topics, he's a veterinarian.
Fab!. Wonderful book! Honest and funny.
Hilarious! A must-read. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I'm not sure whether it was the quirky stories, the childhood photos with hilarious captions, or the ADHD manner of story-telling, but this book had me literally laughing out loud. It got to the point where I couldn't read it around others because I'd die laughing and get dirty looks. I would HIGHLY recommend this book
Lets pretend this never happened. OMG! This memoir is hysterical from beginning to end!
Books and Junk ( I hate title spaces, duh, it's a book review. Quit with the pressure). If you can go to a party and act normal, don't read this. If you, however, go to a party and tell the Senior Vice President of Some Such S#?$ that she resembles a well known lesbian (I thought it was a compliment) and she makes your husband's job hell for a year, read this! You have found your people. We should have a party of all of us socially awkward types and just see what happens. Nice to know I'm not the only weirdo out there!! I totally want your GPS and "Voldemort Vaginia" (my spell check wanted to replace Vaginia with Vaginitis) You invented the most awesome Vaginia on earth and I named it's fist disease. This is by far the most times I've used Vaginia in a book review and I am not capitalizing that, my iPad is. Penis! Ok, adding a little balance. I'm done. I can totally relate to the tractor driving to school. I didn't have a tractor, but if I did I would need one with a cockpit so I wouldn't get messed up hair, you know how judgmental high schoolers are... Do they let people use Vaginia and penis in book reviews on this? Please take a moment to notice my iPad capitalizes Vaginia, but not penis... Oh, I guess I never mentioned this book is awesome. I'd use a better word, but I spell so bad that the spellchecker can't identify any word in the English language that resembles what I was trying to spell in the first place, le sigh...
Nope. I like zany anecdotes, modern every-girl memoir, and incisive depictions of socially awkward situations as much as anyone, and I think that if I knew Jenny Lawson, I'd (probably) like her. So I feel bad saying this: I thought this book was a total waste of time— annoyingly self-conscious, boring, ranty, trying-too-hard, and a monument to the fact that popular bloggers ≠ good writers. Not necessarily, anyway. I think chatty stories and zany anecdotes conveyed with some force and wit can make for a very entertaining blog, but it takes something more to make a cohesive, enjoyably book with a valuable and nuanced contribution. This does not have something more, and unfortunately Jenny Lawson's editor did not require her to find or develop that something before publishing Let's Pretend This Never Happened. Details like pseudo-opera-sung chapter headings gave me headaches.... too much weird-and-proud-of-it show-womanship, not enough substance.
Let's Pretend This Didn't Happen. I stayed up all night listening to this audiobook. It was so funny, I had to look up her other books, and subscriber to her blog. Some of the stories were so funny I almost peed myself. And it's so refreshing when mental illness is treated as it should be, openly and honestly with humor.
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. Frenetic and funny. A laugh literally in every line. And someone should take away my license to alliterates. Seriously, though, it's a quick , witty read. Look forward to LESS from Jenny because not I realize: she's the competition and I don't stand a chance. Buy the book and make her rich; you'll have fun and she deserves the success for all the typing she put into this very funny book.
Hilarious!. Seriously make me laugh out loud...love it!
I wanted to love it. But I didn't. There were hysterically funny parts that made me laugh wildly. There were many times I just lost track and lost interest. In fact I don't think I actually finished reading the book. I've read an excerpt from her new book and was really amused, which is why I read this one first. But honestly, now I'm not so sure.
Best book ever. I read this book completely on a whim an loved every minute of it. I smiled and laughed the whole time. It's very well written, with entertaining subject matter. You ever won't a book that you just can't put down buy this. Trust me you won't regret it.
Best. Book. Ever. Seriously it is!
❤️. I enjoy Jenny’s take on life. She has a gift for being able to see humor in things and the world needs more of that. There’s an underlying message of hope in her writing.
Love her!!. I have fallen in love with Jenny Lawson and I can't wait to read her next book! Thanks to her for bringing me through a tough time in life with a huge smile on my face and belly roll laughter. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. P.s. I just got done looking up taxidermied *spell check be damned!* friends to stash all over my house!
Great book!!. I had to keep from laughing out loud several times so I didn't wake my sleeping husband! Seriously, go read this book!
laugh out loud funny. if Erma Bombeck had Tourette's this would be her book. funny and irreverent Jenny Lawson's memoir is hilarious and touching
She is hilarious!. I love Jenny Lawson! Even through her hard times, she manages to find the humor in what she has gone through. Her way of going from one extreme to another is entertaining and makes her that much better of a writer. Knock Knock Mother F*#^&er! :)
Five stars simply isn't enough. I read only a few pages of this book and I was obsessed. Jenny talks about knowing your tribe, well if you can related to ANY thing in this book; then you've found your tribe too. I've read the book a couple of times and it just gets funnier and funnier. I can't wait until her next book.
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. This book is amazing! I've never laughed until I cried so many times while reading a book. I want to buy so many copies of this book just to give to people!! Hilarious!
Hilarious.. Jenny Lawson really knows how to let her crazy out of the closet. It's super funny. I totally put off changing my baby's diaper so I could keep reading.
Hilarious. I love the dedication page. Also the first two pages the most! This needs a 5/5 rating 😆
Made me giggle. On so many levels. Irreverent, crazy, honest, crazy, heartfelt, and um... Did I say crazy? In a word, though, I would have to say "fun."
AMAZING. I loved this book so much. I've never read a book so fast in my life. This book made me laugh my butt off. When I was having a bad day I would read more because 100% of time it would just make my day. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Let's pretend this never happened. Rambles in a million directions to complete a story, but very funny. Squirrel!
Audio version is hilarious. We listened to this book on our 8.5 trip and it made us LOL many times. Looking for more books by Jenny.
So funny that I cried.... Funny tears not sad tears. Best. Book. EVER! When you read this book and laugh really hard = it's a keeper!!!
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. Hilarious book. Period. A must read!
Fragmented. This is more a collection of anecdotes than a coherent narrative. It is funnier in small doses. Author does record potentially painful memories and uses humor to defuse them, which is very courageous. However, her style of constantly stating and then retracting information wears thin after the first couple of chapters. Wish I had just read her blog instead.
Fantastic book. I read a lot and this was the first book that I actually laughed out loud ! Easy to relate to and enjoy !
Funniest book I've ever read. Literally laughing out loud in public places. Finally there is someone else out there who voices those strange thoughts carousing through my head! Bravo Jenny, bravo.
Absolutely loved‼️‼️. If you are looking for a book that will make you laugh at loud I highly recommend this book.
Brilliant!. Hands down, the funniest book I have ever read! Finished it in one setting, last night, and plan to read again. I laughed until I cried, the entire time. Amazingly brilliant! Love her and Victor!
Perfection.. I love this book! It's so hilarious and original!'
I think I'm related. Hilarious! Bought a copy for my brother after the second chapter. Bought a third for my best friend after the 'vagina' chapter. I should just buy a case and hand them out. Love the honesty, and vulgarity...laughed out loud too many times to count (probably peed a little too).
Half funny. This book was highly recommended as being hilarious. Well, I would say about half of it is funny, the rest is just rather long and boring.
The stupidest most hilarious book I have ever read. I cannot even explain why this book was so good. All I know is I found myself laughing so hard I was crying on airplanes and nearly peeing my pants while reading it over coffee in the morning. To those who read it and find themselves thinking "I don't get it"....I think you are trying too hard. Put it down, have a glass of wine, then try again when you can just read without needing a point.

Let's Pretend this never happened. Not as funny as I thought it would be. Kinda rambles on too much, too much 'shtick. If u want to read something REALLY funny, read Ali Wentworth's new book "Ali in Wonderand".
Not worth the read. Rambles on way too much. Some funny parts but a far cry from a funny book. Not worth the money.
Let’s Pretend This Never Happened. I’ve read this book so many times. It’s brilliant. Everytime I read it, it brings me to tears, i am laughing so hard. I very highly recommend this book to everyone I meet, and I am furiously happy that she has written another. Counting down the days.
Laugh Out Loud!!. Just an awesome read...felt like I was among family. Really!! I think we must be related😁
Funny read. So funny! Love this book
Great read!. Pretty hilarious book! Jenny Lawson has the great ability to see her life experiences in a positive and funny way, whether they had been horrifying or not. Very entertaining :)
Too much rambling. Thought it would be funnier. I found it tough to be interested...and I agree with another reviewer - too much rambling
Never laughed so often so soon. Had me laughing from hello. The pic of the raccoon in the Jams says it all.
Lets pretend. Hilarious and heart warming.
Outstanding!. Having decided that every home needs a Rory (furiously happy) I wanted to give book one a try and I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. Jenny touches heartstrings without being arrested for innapropriate conduct. Anyone (such as me) who has struggled with any form of mental illnesses will relate beyond their wildest dreams! Buy this book! For everyone!
Let's Pretend this Never Happened. I read this book during a cross country flight. I suspect my seat neighbour may have suspected I was suffering frequent seizures as I was trying to hold in the laughter and was shaking like a leaf and occasionally emitting sqeaky noises as laughter escaped. I was also crying from laughter and occasionally from genuine sadness. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to laughs so hard they can no longer talk.
Kegel worthy. I laughed out loud, blew snot bubbles, and if I didn't regularly do my kegels, would have peed my pants.
So funny I cried!. Seriously Jenny is an amazing writer. I laughed so hard I cried and attempted to read the story aloud to my husband only to fall into fits of giggles. Her life is real and messy and wonderful. She gives a voice to the reality of mental illness, true love and family. My only disappointment? I read it in 2 days...I wish it had been longer!
Lets Pretend This never Happened. A very funny book, I loved it.
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. Laugh-out-loud twisted fun. Right up there with Tina Fey's Bossypants

LOVED IT!. I am not good at writing reviews, so I'll just say I LOVED THIS BOOK!! I think I have found a kindred spirit in Jenny. I can relate to so many of the things she wrote about. I will be waiting on the second book...... Thanks, Jenny, for writing out loud the stuff that goes through my head.
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. This was a great book. If you need a good laugh and don't get one from this book, there is something seriously wrong with you. I hope Jenny is planning on writing another.
Fun for a few chapters. Early chapters are fun and then the schtick gets tired after a while.
I laughed so hard I cried!. By far the best, most enjoyable book I've read in a long time - I've recommended it to everyone I know! Particular favourites are the guest spots with her husband Victor and Stanley the magical squirrel. I can't wait for the sequel :)
Best book ever and ever and ever. It's absolutely hilarious! The answer to the question in your head is, yes you should definitely buy this book, then after just three chapters you'll buy it for all your closest friends so they can laugh along with you too!
ADHD gone wild. Let's pretend this is what happens to untreated authors with severe ADHD and access to Microsoft word.
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. An authentic Slice-Of-Life memoir that is both shocking & entertaining. It's rare that I laugh out loud while reading, but Jenny's story had me busting up numerous times. A quick, fun, easy read you won't want to pass by.
AMAZING. Hysterical! One of the best I have ever read. You will literally lol and maybe wish your life was like hers!!!
This book ROCKS!. I laughed! I cried! It was better than Cats! Seriously, though, I laughed out loud almost every other page.
Awesome. This is one of a kind book. The author is very sarcastic, witty, and has a very unique outlook on life. Totally recommend for some good laughs!!!
One word: hilarious. So hilarious, in fact, that I'm off to the bookstore to buy 6 hard copies for 6 of my most hilarious friends. And win the Christmas Gift prize for 2012. Thanks, Jenny!
Let's Pretend This Never Happened. This book proves I am normal no matter what anyone says.
Awesome. She needs to write another book!
Let's pretend this never happened. I didn't want the book to end and cannot wait for the 2nd one. Finally, someone crazier than I am, and she put it in writing. Thank you Jenny Lawson
Awesome. This book is amazing, I laughed my mother laughed. Everyone should read it.
Freaking hilarious!. As I read this book, I was pretending to be a part of various family activities; watching a football game on tv, watching Christmas Vacation for the 700th time, etc. I was outed many times from the laughing out loud! This book was so funny, I am totally recommending it to one of my friends whose sense of humor is just as warped as mine and the author's! It is so worth the $45, even the iPad version! That Victor is a visionary!
Love it!!. This book is hilarious!! I recommend it to everyone!!
Love!. I couldn't read this in bed because my laughter would wake my husband. Great read!
Fun!. I really enjoyed reading this book... It was like a good time on paper. Loved the book is broken out into short personal stories. The stories are written with love for her family and blunt honesty that leaves the stories hysterical and wishing you were friends with the author. A lot of fun, a little crude (okay with me) and very personal (but not in an Oprah way... again, okay with me). Enjoy and don't expect anything intense. And I send my best to Victor... hang in there!
Great read. I really loved this book. I found myself laughing out loud at some parts. It is a fun read.
LOL. I've enjoyed many books that I thought were hillarious. But this is the first time I've literally laughed like a maniac with my ipad in front of me ! Can't wait for the next one
Awesome!. I absolutely loved this book. It made me laugh out loud so many times that my boyfriend said I looked like a mentally unstable adult while reading it in the waiting room of the car dealership service center....totally worth it!
Rambling mess. Got through a few chapters and finally gave up.
Nonstop gut-wrenching laughs. Jenny Lawson is divine! I'm sure she writes just like she speaks and that makes the book so much more enjoyable. I take comfort in the fact that she and her family are just as crazy as me and mine. I laughed through the entire book, but quite a few times I found myself laughing so hard I couldn't keep my eyes open. I read parts aloud to my husband who looked at me like I was nuts... Then I'd tell him, "Oh my God, they're just like us!" I can't wait for book two (I hope she tells us about this twin she ingested).
Awesome funny. I was going through a rough patch and my sister recommended this book.....awesome! I laughed so hard that I would have to put it down to catch my breath. I love you Jenny!
Must read. Seriously. Hilarious. Had me laughing on every page!
Only in Texas. I laughed out loud throughout the entire book and insisted that people allow me to read excerpts to them because they just had to hear what I just read. As a native Texan, I could certainly relate to the author's childhood experiences. While no Pulitzer will be awarded, this was a great read and stress reliever. I will never look at squirrels or metal chickens the same way again.
Funny for awhile.. This book has some very funny sections, and for the most part is an easy read. I felt that after awhile I got tired of the author going off on random tangents. I understand that this is how the author is but it began to become annoying.
Hilarious!. Loved every minute of it!
Way Past Funny!. This has got to be one of the funniest read I have found.. I highly recommend this book.
Great read!. Hadn't heard of author - or read her blog - but thought I would give her book a shot. Glad I did! Funny funny and funny. Interesting glimpse of a life being well lived. Read it - you'll be glad you did.
Let's pretend this never happened. Awesome book. To the weirdness and humor in all of us. Loved, loved it. Can't wait for her next book.
A crazy and hilarious author! Just read the book.... Jenny- This has to be one of the funniest books I have ever taken so long to read, just because I couldn't stop laughing. Every person living on this planet needs to read this book, at least once. I too agree, it should be recommended reading in all high schools across the big state of Texas. Haha THANK YOU for entertaining me so well!
Disappointed. I was hoping for more content. Though the author has lots of extraordinary stories to share they go on and on about dumb stuff. I skipped a bunch of the book. Just to get through it.
Eh. At first I thought it was a worthwhile book until I kept reading it and I start to realize that the author is just trying way too hard. From that point on it gets boring and monotonous. I don't recommend the book.
Incredible. This is the funniest thing I have ever read. Not a big, or quick reader, but this book took me only one week. Nights of tears rolling down my face, while the bed shook from my laughter. Tried to read my favorite parts to family members, but often couldn't see through my tears, or read without making snorting noises. You must read this book!
Love it. The only thing I didn't love about this book was that eventually, it ended.
Hilarity. I literally laughed out loud several times, which is rare for me. Her neuroses make me feel like I'm not alone, and it's nice to know someone else's childhood was more f$@ked up than yours.
Literally LOL. This was such a funny book. So many times I was laughing out loud and reading sections to my husband. One of my favorite lines. "I'm married." "congratulations?"
Peed my pants. This book is so hilarious! I am completely in tears laughing so hard!
Hilarious!!!!. So funny. My dad has some explaining to do though.... I swear he must have a double life! The vomiting in a deer carcass was SOOOOOO familiar!
Hilarious!!!. There were times I had to stop reading because I was laughing so hard I had tears running down my face!!!!!
Had me in tears. I've never read (or even heard of) Jenny's blog before I read this book. Although it was a bit 'ramblely' at times that's essentially what made it so dang funny. I laughed to the point of crying several times, the turkey bit was my absolute favorite!!
So perfect for relieving stress!. I've never laughed so hard at a book! I graduated Highschool a year early with honors and my whole life was full of education. When school got out I rewarded myself with this book...it was a great reward!!! I loved the irreverent humor and the spin Jenny Lawson puts on life! I've recommended this book to my mom, sister and bestfriend and they all loved it!!!
Terrible. This book was so bad I had to stop reading it. The author rambles on throughout the entire book. Really bad...
Funny!. Good book! Made me laugh and reminded me that humor is in the way you choose to look at life.
Too Funny for Words. This book is too funny for words. Nothing is adequate to describe it other than awesome. Read it, love it, laugh, cry from laughing, pee from laughing, read it again. I wish I could give it more stars!!!!
Ah-mazing. Pretty sure this is the funniest book I've ever read!
Great book!. I could not put it down, it was too funny!!
thank goodness ellipticals have handles .... WARNING: this book causes sudden explosions of laughter! You know that kind where your eyes shut and no noise comes out and you can't breathe? That kind ... One time in the middle of a very quiet flight. Again on an elliptical, that time I doubled over and almost fell on the ground! Funniest book I have ever read!! My only suggestion: don't read this in church. Fellow church goers will not appreciate it ...
