Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum.

Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie’s name is on the killer’s list.

Short on time to find evidence proving the killer’s identity, Stephanie faces further complications when her family and friends decide that it’s time for her to choose between her longtime off-again-on-again boyfriend, Trenton cop Joe Morelli, and the bad boy in her life, security expert Ranger. Stephanie’s mom is encouraging Stephanie to dump them both and choose a former high school football star who’s just returned to town. Stephanie’s sidekick, Lula, is encouraging Stephanie to have a red-hot boudoir “bake-off.” And Grandma Bella, Morelli’s old-world grandmother, is encouraging Stephanie to move to a new state when she puts “the eye” on Stephanie.

With a cold-blooded killer after her, a handful of hot men, and a capture list that includes a dancing bear and a senior citizen vampire, Stephanie’s life looks like it’s about to go up in smoke.

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg's The Heist.

Smokin Seventeen. I have read all of the Stephanie Plum novels and can't wait for the next one. The books are a quick read and are usually pretty much predictable. The biggest draw for me in reading these books is the fact that it makes me laugh out loud, over and over. My husband is never sure what is going on when I start laughing. Lula and Stephanie can keep me laughing for a long time. In my book, that shows the true genius of a great writer. Thank-you for the enjoyment.

Non-smoking seventeen. I always look forward to each new book in the series. Honestly, I'm probably one of her BIGGEST FANS!!! But, I'm beginning to think she should've quit while she was ahead. This book was lacking in so many ways. Too short, too simple, too slow in the middle, & too quick in the end! I agree with "plum fan" that it doesn't seem like Janet wrote this book - her usual wit, interesting plot, surprise ending, humor & smart dialog is MIA! I know she started to let her daughter help with the books, but I have to wonder if her daughter has completely taken over - I hope not. What happened to the suspense? The conflict was resolved in ONE FREAKING PAGE!!! I had higher hopes for this book. I don't know what the next book will be like, but I feel like she should just SKIP THIS BOOK completely. I'm sorry to be so negative, I usually try to overlook the bad in a book BUT- I KNOW EVANOVICH IS CAPABLE OF EXCELLENT WRITING !!! She is the reason I started reading books outside of school just for fun!!!!! That being said- I WILL continue to read the rest of the books in this series because I think Stephanie will redeem herself. : )

Smokin' Seventeen. I thought it was pretty good. I would love to see Stephanie have a few more flings with Ranger, since her heart clearly belongs to Morelli. I also thought it was more obvious who the killer was than in previous books. Love Stephanie Plum.

Dot Nell

Still funny. The cast of characters continue to be laugh-out-loud funny. This book was slightly disappointing in that the bad guy was very evident from his arrival. Maybe after this many books it is hard to keep any suspense going, but it was still an enjoyable read.

Zzzzzzzzzzzz........ Predictable. One or two funny passages but that's it. Janet should be embarrassed cashing the checks after publishing a book she probably wrote in her sleep. The only thing worse is my having bought this after thinking the last five or six Stephanie Plum books were predictable and boring. Team Joe? Team Ranger? How about Team Who Cares?

Mardee45

Can't wait. I can't wait to read the next one! I swear these are the best most entertaining books ever! I find myself actually laughing out loud!

Onioneye

Smokin' Seventeen. One of my favorite Stephanie Plum books. We all need some fun and a little vordo in our lives and this book fit the bill. Keep 'em coming.

MmmMattie

Crap. Super disappointing and boring. Drivel is too high praise for this POS. And I love this series. Been reading her books for ten years.

Lutzgirl

Smokin seventeen,. another side splitter by the queen of Writing bout the burg!I started it this morning and couldn't put it down as usual!! ever since One for the Money, I have been hooked! Lov lov love her!,, keep them coming!!! Becky cermak Land o lakes,Fl

Blueyedblondeiam

Sizzling Seventeen. Janet never disappoints! Lots of Drama, Fun, and Sexual Hilarity! Keeps the Ranger/ Joe problem believable and interesting.

Hunwood

Smoking seventeen. Loved it!! Had me laughing out loud just like the other sixteen!!

LukesMommy08

Evanovich never disappoints. As with all of the Stephanie Plum books, go in prepared to laugh your rear end off at the sheer lunacy of the character's antics! While I knew who the "bad guy" was from the get go, this isn't a book or writer one reads wanting to get the "surprise" ending, so I was not disappointed with the element of predictability here. Part of the fun of these books is seeing/reading the crazy shenanigans and scenarios that Stephanie and Lula constantly find themselves in. These two are a Smokin', beautiful, hilarious HOT MESS. I highly recommend to anyone who likes to read books for pure unadulterated entertainment.

PAKDVM

Smokin seventeen. Stephanie is back with a vengeance. I laughed throughout the book at all the turmoil she somehow manages to get in the middle of. Another great book in the Stephanie Plum series

K4552

Great As Always. I love the Stephanie Plum series! Another great book I couldn't put down! Read it in 1 day. Thank you for such great and crazy characters!

Missyssyp

Return to a good story. Evanovich finally got away from her formulaic, every-book-the-same run with Smokin' Seventeen. Characters finally started developing, stuff started happening, and we stopped hearing about the boring, on-again off-again with Morelli that dragged through the last three books. I had given up on buying and just waited for my library copy, but this one was good enough to buy and I'm glad I did. Great story, good ending, can't wait for #18.

Ldmerry

Smokin seventeen. As entertaining as books 1-16. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Blumama25

Read this book. It's got Sicilian curses, good food, and large underpants. If it doesn't make you laugh, well, I'll have my eye on you.

Wylecoyote2

smoking seventeen. This edition was a fun, quick read. As with all of the Plum novels, I laughed out loud and that made the book worth reading. With that said, there was no development in Stephanie's character. Rather than tackling the decision of who is the man for her, she acts based upon a silly curse. It is time for Stephanie to grow up. Likewise, Joe's character was in a coma. Stephanie goes trotting off with Ranger and he does/says nothing. That is not the character I have come to know and love. Regarding Ranger, we've seen a depth to him in prior books that was just lacking here. "Babe" doesn't say it all. While fun, earlier volumes were far better written and developed. Here is to hoping that 18 will be better.

Purpleiris1

Smokin' Seventeen. One of her best and funniest! Instead of getting old and stale with each one in her Stephanie Plum series, the author continues to be funny as ever and her characters more defined. I can't wait until November 22nd, when I can start reading Explosive Eighteen!! Marla F., Shell Knob, MO

Tiff_Mainero

Ehh. I'm pretty sure there is just a template on the authors computer and she just has other people come in and add new characters and some sex scenes. That's really all there has been to the past few books. Plus there are at least two different writing styles so I don't think she is even writing her own books anymore. Pretty disappointed. Plus shes popping out books faster than people can read them. Put some time and effort in and they may start to get readable again.

Sue Alma

Smokin sixteen. I Never Write book reviews ...but I had no choice this time! Just the funniest book I have read in AGES! Always a good plot and well written..... But this was just too too funny....loved it. Thank you Janet Evanovich

Isis10366

Awesome!. As usual, my favorite author doesn't disappoint!

Smartypants7

ehhh???. Im a HUGE Evanovich fan, could NOT wait for 17 to be published... but this one is by FAR my very very least favorite. felt very thrown together, a lot more darkness and a LOT of sex, not the typical whimsy and fun of a Plum novel. it was an OK book at best. If a person read this book first they probably wouldnt make it passed here to the rest of the series. Still a fan but, i really hope the next one is back to par

Jinxtoyou

Not too bad.. Back you her usual antics. Wasn't an amazing story but was we worth the buy.

Niki1118

Love it!. As with all the Stephanie Plum books this one is a good quick read. I love laughing at all the remarkable situations Stephanie finds herself in. And not to mention the HOT men in her life. Wow! Great book. I can't wait til November when Explosive Eighteen comes out.

"the awesome one"

Run out of ideas?. This installment was so disappointing. Has Janet E. Run out of steam? It seems that she's trying too hard to think up wacky scenarios, especially when it comes to ways to get Stephanie into bed with Ranger.

Nuncianancy

Disappointing. I found it difficult to get through this book. The first few stories in this series were wickedly funny and entertaining. The characters were being introduced and developed. At some point in the series the growth stopped and the stories became repetitive. Worst of all, I have grown to really dislike Stephanie Plum. The author has repeatedly stated that she is not going to make her main character choose between the two men in her life, Ranger and Morelli. In this story Stephanie has sex with both Morelli and Ranger. She just can't decide between them but she is sure she doesn't like her mother's pick, Dave Brewer. This woman is so annoying and a horrible example for single women. How many times do we have to read about Stephanie's unwavering attraction for Ranger? How many times do we have to read about her guilt at messing around with Ranger while she is in a relationship with Morelli? How are we supposed to believe that such a talented detective like Morelli cannot figure out that his girlfriend is having sex with another man? If he does know, how are we supposed to respect a man who has no problem his girlfriend having sex with another man? How are we supposed to like a supposedly successful man who only wants to have casual sex with our main character without any thought of commitment? How many times do we have to read about Stephanie's terrible job? This book was ridiculous. It makes no sense. What would make sense is having Stephanie realize that she is a really good investigator and should probably try to develop her natural talents into a career. I would accept her working for Ranger but would prefer that she set out on her own with Connie and Lula. I also prefer Morelli to Ranger as a boyfriend, but I would gladly accept Ranger if it meant that she would pick one. I can only hope the author will figure this out and finally give us something new and refreshing.

DWFREIDELL

Always a great read!. I really enjoy reading Janet Evanovich books! The right amount of humor, sex and strong characters to go with.

Kat_09

Save your money!! I wish I had!. Unfortunately, Janet Evanovich has forgotten the back stories of her characters and they are flat and lifeless, with the exception of Lula, who is either eating, wanting to eat or talking about eating all they way through this book. There is no mystery, you know by chapter 3 who the killer is. Ms. Evanovich calls this her "sex" book but there is really no action and absolutely no sexual tension. In my humble opinion the sex was an afterthought and put into the books only to help boost sales. Anyone that has read books 1 - 12 knows that Stephanie would not have sex with Joe one day and Ranger the next. If I could return my book for a full refund I would. If you feel you need to read this book, check it out of your local library.

Haleeeygoesrawrr

Smokin Seventeen. It was good as usual, but the sleeping with Ranger one day and Morelli the next is improbable, and like others have said, I knew who the killer was 1/3 way through the book. She needs to pick a guy for Stephanie and end the series...it's getting repetitive.

Mirsha

Great!!!. its been 17 + books about pretty much the same but different and she does it so well i'm never bored!!!

TDaleT

Fun to read. As usual, Lula is as goofy as possible and Stephanie gets into a massive mess. Okay to say that I’m going to read all the Plum series just for entertainment and giggles.

Airka0520

Funny. Love her books can't wait for another.

Tadame

Seems like I'm reading the the first book. Not alot of character evolution. I have loved all Janets books, it just seems like a regurgitated, same ole, same ole. A bit boring now for me.

TIMOTHY S JOHNSON

Smokin Seventeen. Much better book than the last few Stephanie books! Fun read!

Nooch007

smokin' seventeen. Ok so where is the story about the trip???? There's not much in 18, so I'm disappointed but as always just love the book!

Qsinoodle

Smokin' Seventeen. You are a genius writer. Hilariously funny!

Tiamaria7704

Need to finally decide. A bit disappointed.. Like all the rest of the books, they are cute, easy read. I do like all the characters. I am however, annoyed with- Joe or Ranger? It's like reading Twilight, except thank God she had Bella choose Edward. Janet can totally have Plum choose Morelli or Ranger and make the relationship playful. Just like when she lived at Morelli's house for a while, all the craziness in the house and relationship was fun to read. It was also cute how they did well together. I think she needs to finally be able to answer the question. I went to library to check this out because although I'm a fan, I won't spend my hard earned money it until she finally does something that will blow me away.

KikiAki1

Same old story line. I loved Nancy's first 12 Stephanie Plum novels. After that it was the same old regurgitated story line and characters. I am ready for Stephanie to move on and stop the nonsense. Can we please get a new, fresh plot for the next book???

Plum fan

Smokin' Seventeen. Couldn't wait for the book as I have loved them all till Sixteen and as was Sixteen this was a huge disappointment. Not funny at all! She didn't interact with any of the other characters was like the book was written by someone not JE!

Caanita

Great!. This book is reminiscent of the first five Plum books. It had the same amount of mystery, action, sex, bungling and laughs. This was a thoroughly enjoyable book!

Aceboogie98

Smokin indeed!. This is by far one of the funniest of the series! The things that go down with Stephanie, Ziggy and Lula had me laughing so hard I had to put the book down and take a ten minute break! The effects of the vordo spell from Morelli's grandma were certainly heating things up and were definitely worth reading! thanks for the heat Janet! I sooooo can't wait to know who uses the tickets in Explosive Eighteen!

Annaperk

Were the last 50 pages missing?. I'm a fan of this series but this book disappointed me - it just ended. It was like Ms Evanovich ran out of energy. I'll think long and hard before I spend my money on the next one in the series.

Dzincia

Smokin seventeen. Not her usual.i like her first books better. More imagination at work, much more amusing. Characters are boring, going nowhere.she need to make a choice. I would pic Ranger, she need to explore his past. The bounty hunter need to broaden her horizons.i have book 18 but if it is not better ,I give up on Stephanie. Make me laugh again !!!!!!!!

MoniMoni96

Easy, fun read. I have yet to tire of this cast of characters and their antics! The only reason this book didn't get 5 stars is because it was absurdly obvious who the killer was right from the beginning and as ditzy as Stephanie & Lula often are this crossed the line into being obtuse.

P00ks

Eh. I love all of the Stephanie Plum novels, but the last couple haven't really done anything for me. The book is entertaining but predictable. I hope the next one is better.

Getsumpunkjr

Finally !!. I was getting sick of Stephanies dry streak. I am go glad Janet put some sex in this book it was needed.

Sweim

What happened to the suspense?!. I agree with Kat_09, the Stephanie I know wouldn't have slept with Ranger one day and Morelli the next. No suspense at all, I knew who the killer was right away! I could tell JE used a ghost writer on this book. Very sad. Won't buy the next book.

NydiaO

Great!!!. Loved this book very action packed and finished it in 2 days!!!

TGford

Silly easy read. Goofy. Easy read. Need no real intense thought process to follow. Easily figured out “ who done it “ early on. Good read when don’t have to really concentrate.

Predictable. Predictable, boring, and lacking her usual comedic touch...I'll definately be skipping explosive eighteen. This series is over in my eyes.

Rosie5037

Exceptionally Plum!. As usual, the theme and story lines are wonderful, light, but not fluff, fun filled thrills!! Read the book in about 4 exciting hours and wanted more! Finally a long anticipated reunion & am dying to learn her choice! Enjoy!

13Brat29

Top Notch. Fantastic as always! Stephanie always makes me laugh out loud!!!! Can't wait till November!

Khadlock

17. I love all Janet books and yet again she out does her self what a great novel can't wait for the next one! Great reads.

Ami200485

I just love her, i started reading the plum series in march and read all 16 plus the ones in-between the numbers my the middle of may, once i started reading i couldnt put them down i just love them, I had 17 pre-ordered as soon as i could and i just love it cant wait till november when 18 comes out!!

Scrappinnurse

Fabulous!. Stephanie strikes again! Laugh out loud funny and a "can't put it down" storyline containing Stephanie's unusual crew of friends. Pure summer entertainment!

NoDakFrye

Janet does it again!. I fell in love with the Plum series years ago and Janet does NOT disappoint! Every time I finish a book I think there is no possible way Janet can top it, but she does every time!!! Smokin' 17 is 100% worth the wait and cost! Just amazing! I can not recommend this book, (or series) any more. Thank you Janet (and Stephanie!) once again for a suspenseful page turner! LOVE EVERY WORD! BUY THIS BOOK & if you haven't read the rest of the series yet....READ IT NOW! What are you waiting for? You'll laugh out loud, be afraid at times and the love scenes.....magical!

Rock_it's.that.simple

AWESOME!!!. I just can't wait for these books!! As always, this one keeps me reading until the end!!! Never mind the strange looks I get from family and friends when I laugh!

DeannaStall

Smokin seventeen. This book was wonderful! I couldn't put it down! This might be my favorite in the series!

Texasluvs9

Fun all around. J.E. Did it again. I had so much fun I read it in a day. Her characters are so colorful and full of life. This book is full of the humor and charm you expect from this series.

HoopinMama

Smokin Seventeen. Although I love all the Stephanie Plum novels, this is the best one in awhile! Lula is back with all of her crazy antics and the Ranger vs Morelli dilemma is as HOT as ever!!! This is a must read!!

Rolp16

Same stuff different number.... I'm only a quarter of the way through the book, but so far it's the same Stephanie Plum we met in book 1. I enjoy the light hearted storyline, but after 17 of these I start to wonder when Stephanie will stop re-living the same gaffs and mistakes. Shouldn't she be better at her job by now? Wouldn't Lula have been fired considering she doesn't work? I know it's fiction, but I feel like the books are in repeat rather than building on one another. Here's hoping something changes in the next 100 pages.

Princesschristu

LOVE this woman!. I love all Janets books and this one is no exception. It had me laughing out loud and comparing my grandmother to Grandma Mazur - they have too much in common! Ha! Can't wait for the next one!

Devon simone

Smokin seventeen. I cannot say enough about this book...Ive never laughed so hard! I really thought this series would start to fizzle but my god they get better and better can't wait till next one....
