#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NOW A STARZ ORIGINAL SERIES

Unrivaled storytelling. Unforgettable characters. Rich historical detail. These are the hallmarks of Diana Gabaldon’s work. Her New York Times bestselling Outlander novels have earned the praise of critics and captured the hearts of millions of fans. Here is the story that started it all, introducing two remarkable characters, Claire Beauchamp Randall and Jamie Fraser, in a spellbinding novel of passion and history that combines exhilarating adventure with a love story for the ages.

One of the top ten best-loved novels in America, as seen on PBS’s The Great American Read!

Scottish Highlands, 1945. Claire Randall, a former British combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding clans in the year of Our Lord . . . 1743.

Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of a world that threatens her life, and may shatter her heart. Marooned amid danger, passion, and violence, Claire learns her only chance of safety lies in Jamie Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior. What begins in compulsion becomes urgent need, and Claire finds herself torn between two very different men, in two irreconcilable lives.

This eBook includes the full text of the novel plus the following additional content:
• An excerpt from Diana Gabaldon’s Dragonfly in Amber, the second novel in the Outlander series
• An interview with Diana Gabaldon
• An Outlander reader’s guide

I’m in love. If I could give it more stars I would .I started off with the tv series. And I loved it . But when I decided to read the books wow 😮 I’m in love . She is a brilliant writer. The Books are way better than the show!

Johntdoc

Outlander. Greatedtest love story since Dr. Zhivago ! Watched full series 2x now and read the last 4 books in series, just now finishing 1. Thank you.

Love Portuguese

Great Romantic Epic Story. Loved this first book can't wait to read all 8 in the series.

Totally over the top. In 1945 twenty seven year old Claire is married to an older man and living a happy, quiet, life in England. By some sort of paranormal magic while on vacation in Scotland she is transported 200 years back to a primitive time in the Scottish Highlands. She encounters violence, unspeakable evil, and passionate love. Her adventures seemed totally over the top with improbable situations and unbelievable near death escapes. People shot full of holes recovered as good as new in a few days. Overlaying all of this is her passionate, numerous, and graphically described love trysts with Jamie — a caracture of the handsome, total hero. Presented with the opportunity to return to her former life and husband the question is — will she? I found the book to be entertaining, with interesting take outs on Scottish lore and customs, but weighed down by the many drawn out and tedious narratives and conversations that added little or nothing to the plot. The ending was an obvious set up for the sequel that did occur. While it was an intriquing time travel story, with lots of romance if you could call it that, it would have been a better book without so much depiction of degrading conduct and completely improbable situations. I give it 3 stars. — di pinto

OUTLANDERS. OMG, I love outlanders, I started watching the series and I loved it. I’ve always wanted to read the books and I love how they changed some stuff. Reading the book gave me a whole new perspective of Outlanders.

Amazing. Best book series and television series of all time😍

Outlander Love. Excellent book! Can't wait to read book #2!! 😊

Mjgdvm

Loved this book. I started reading this after watching Outlander on Starz. Although there are some differences, they are small. The actors in the series bring the book to visual life. It is interesting, funny, sexy, sad, and exciting. Ready to start book 2.

Bittersea713

Speechless!!!💕. Omg!!! I love ❤️ this book is so great! It has a little bit of everything!!

Meteoritess

Great book that stays with you!. I just read this and it was great! Jamie is a strong character; right up there with Christian. The series on Stars is wonderful. They capture the story quite well. I have become obsessed.

Chktabnana

AMAZING!!. Diana Gabaldon has ruined me! This book, this entire series, this story, I love it all. Diana has created such a strong female character in her stories. She's created a strong male character as a companion. Together you have such a passionate pair in Claire & Jamie, that create an incredible life and adventure together. I was hooked immediately& couldn't put the book down once I started it. I read every waking moment that I had.

Brooke Roger

Simply Amazing. This one of those books where you wonder how in the world someone could write this. All the historical parts and all the small details seem to make something impossible feel as if it were the truth. It's a long read but well worth it. This series will be my summer.

QHShowgirl

Absolutely fantastic!. This is one of my all time favorite books, and in it, Diana Gabaldon has created a timeless masterpiece. I can’t count the number of times I’ve read it—certainly more times than the number of books in this series, as each time she writes a new book, I can’t stand it, I have to read all of them over again, so my memory is refreshed, and I can capture each nuance of the whole story. But, I also get impatient, waiting for the next book in the series (although I completely appreciate the time, effort and work she puts in each of her books, to make them as realistic as possible to the period of time that they represent), and I go back and reread them all, as well as all of the books in her Lord John series, just to kind of feel like I am revisiting old friends. An excellent book, and truly exceptional series! I would recommend this to anyone who loves a good story, and appreciates fact based historical novels!

Outlander review. Beautifully written love story. Just a bit too long for my tastes. I didn’t like the violent sex scene, and that is why I didn’t give it 5 stars.

Outlander. ❤️❤️❤️.

Kclovesmermaids

Great read. Very happy to have read. Great storyline and passionate romance.

Stormn Normn

Speechless.... ...is my reaction after having completed this first book. Ms. Gabaldon's prose and eloquence has catapulted me into time with sites, sounds, and aromas that the characters experience demonstrating the ability of the author to draw empathy from her readers and swaddle them in 18th century Scotland. Bravo, Ms. Gabaldon, for sharing your brilliance to the world and for introducing me to The Outlander...!

Outlander. I hate this book. Had to read this book for my book club. It's the stupidest thing ever. It's not even worth proper criticism.

Hell.on.heels

TJCOL

Outlander. I had originally fallen in love with the first season of this show so I skipped the first book and started reading dragonfly in amber. I read through all the books in a matter of a few weeks because I just couldn’t put it down. During this droughtlander I decided to go back and read the first one. I am so happy I did there always so much more detail in books and I loved a few of the scenes in the book much better then the show. I highly recommend reading the series.

Drrawwink

OUTLANDER. Outlander is my favorite book series. I’ve read this first book of the series probably seven times and it never fails to be a book that I can’t put down! Now on to a reread of book #2, Dragonfly in Amber!

TinkleMunda

The series is better. If you are wanting more details after watching Outlander on STARZ then this is for you!! But honestly for me, I was looking for detailed sex scenes that absolutely did not happen in this book. While watching the steamy scenes in here he series, I could only imagine what would happen in the book BUTTTT that was exactly opposite!! The book leaves you hanging as far as details of the sex .. just watch the series and you will save your money!!

Raycoolbot

Amazing. Truly enjoyed this book.

Edentam

Outlander. A few years ago I opened this book expecting a cheap romance that would be read in a short time. The sun rose to me still reading this book because it kept me enthralled front to back. It's a time travel/historical with plenty of action and romance. A wife on her second honeymoon in Scotland gets dropped into the 1700's and mets her soul mate. Together they travel and fight and survive the brutal situations they keep landing in. Love it. Just bought copy in iBooks and keep getting caught reading at work.

Sandrah2os

Beautiful story of Love and Triumph !. Love the way Diana writes and draws you in to Claire and Jamie’s body, soul, spirit, heart mind and will ☺️and incredible love for each other!

Rtsjinkies

Outstanding!!. Diana Gabaldon writes good sex!!

Nc1224

Fantastic. I loved this book and I'm looking forward to the rest of this series. It felt good to read something of substance. I'm emotionally vested in these characters now and can't wait to "see" their story unfold

KY Momma Bear

One of my favorites of all time!. Just finished reading it for the third time. And it doesn’t get old! She’s a fabulous writer! Love the characters and descriptions of life in the 1700s.

Wallace-born

Outlander. I began the Outlander series as a way of understanding my partners fascination with the relationship between Jamie and Claire. After reading a few chapters I saw why she loved the book so much. While we both come from Scottish roots, Wallace and Davison, it was easy to fall into character and escape the days stressors with a distant adventure. I press upon book 2 with vigor and an eye for more.

Kimby72

Really?. Read this book because so many recommended it....all I have to say is this was terrible!!!! I can't believe they made a TV series from this...I love historical fiction but this was just lame.

Mia Rivers

Outlander. I’d started watching the show and loved it. But I knew the book would be a little different. I’ve been sucked in to the Outlander world and adore it. Diana Gabaldon is a wonderful writer. She give you a bit of everything and not once have I felt bored with it. Currently on the fifth book.

Dolphinlaugh12

The best book I have read in years!. The depth of the characters in this novel is astonishing. I love that this novel is quite lengthy, and yet, because it's such a page-turner, it is read easily. I have fallen in love with the characters and I feel very much that they could exist! Galbadon gives life to the landscape of Scotland. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrill.

Mflickinger

Outlander. OMG!!!!!!! Is 12:52 am Monday the 28th of October and I just finish the 1 book, and will have to go to bed now since I have to get up in about 6 hours but it was worth it, a few weeks back my coworker who is reading the 4th book, lend me her copy of the first in paper back and since, don't like paper backs was reluctant to read it but I did and it took me a while to get started in about when she get to the castle I had to get my own copy and decided on the iBook version and it was worth it and it took me this weekend to finish the first in its entirety because I couldn't put it down of course I took restroom break and ate and sleep some for the most part I could not put down and will start this morning on the second at my lunch break at work. Don't give up on these books the are long but worth the story.

Sorceress Sarah

Trigger Warning. It’s a well written and thought out book but it goes too far. I stopped reading after a character was forgiven for spousal abuse. I tried to watch the show and stopped after the rape of a child scene. Too much.

Southern Yankee Honey Bee Co

Love Love Love this book. It was an amazing story

Biv-van

Outlander. An nonstop action novel!!! I saw the first series before reading the novel!!! The novel is pretty true to the series!!! The way that people put women into a lower class would get my blood going, but Claire puts men in their place. Highly recommend this book!!! Can't wait to read the next book in the series!!!

Brandy_lavon

In love. I love everything about the outlander series. Big fan!!!

HollywoodVw

Outlander. Deeply rich , in historical context. I love the romance and historical details .

Outlander. ONE-derful story telling, fantastic writing and a most Ahhhhh-mazing love story all wrapped up in the best historical fiction I’ve ever read!

Bkabcoolwzd

Romance. Interesting story about Scotland but lots of romantic science, if you like that in a book then this one’s for you

Bookworm00125

Outlander. This book did not download past pages 122. Waste of money !!!

KPBaudoin

Epic in Scope and Romance Unparalleled!!. I am so glad I started reading this before the series aired on STARZ! This book was so amazing and transported me to 18th century Scotland. The beautiful rich history of Scotland and the romance against all odds of Claire and Jamie (a delicious Scot, if ever there was one)! I loved every second of it and plan to read Book 2 definitely before Season 2 starts in 2015! Read the book! Watch the series and dream of the beautiful Sassenach and her kilted red-headed Scot! I am in full agreement of the many others who have read it - A MUST-READ book!!

Bittersea713

Speechless!!!💕. Omg!!! I love ❤️ this book is so great! It has a little bit of everything!!

Kayaya20897

Not worth the effort. Very disappointed in this book, it had the setting to potentially be good, but was not even close. It dragged the storyline more than it needed to, I found myself flipping through pages to get the story rolling again. I only finished it because I was hoping the ending would be better, not in this case, infact, it was horrible and brutal. I won't be reading any of the other books in this series, I still can't believe it was picked up for TV.

Ccnuc

Outlander. a riveting, heartfelt, nonstop action story! Fantastic!

Ladyofhewoods

Outlander series is unbelievable!. I've read this series from the first time this book was published... That's about 20 years! It is the ONLY series I have in hard back! The stories are rich and intricate with characters you fall in love with or hate with a passion! I can honestly say it's the best series I have ever read, each book a masterpiece on its own and it all starts with Outlander!

Sarahxbeara27

Love this book.... I absolutely love this book and the subsequent books. Jamie and Claire are always in the back of my mind. One of the best, most detailed love stories for the ages. I also love the author's way of including history into the love story to get a great feel for the times and how true their love is.

Sij 54

My favorite book of all times. I have read this book at least 10 times as well as all of the sequels. I even have an audio book version. The way the characters come to life on the pages are extraordinary. I think I am secretly in love with Jamie Fraser. I do wish the author would not have over used the word alacrity though. I highly recommend the book and the entire series of books. Can't wait to watch the show on stars

Lauren DePue

Nothing tops these books!. I'm reading them through for the third time and I am just as enthralled as the first time. I highly recommend reading all of the Jamie and Claire series!

I'm with the band :)

AMAZING!!. If I was stranded on a deserted island and could only bring one book I would take this one!! It is so well written, and kept me turning the page even when I was dead tired. They're a bit lengthy, especially if you're like me and have read almost the entire series, but so worth it if you have time or read the series over a length of time! Definitely a historical fiction novel and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed reading it; and rereading it too!! I fell in love with the characters especially Jamie and Claire, DUH! Who couldn't?!?!? Also, out of everything I've seen or read, Jack Randall is the only character I have EVER hated with a passion!!!! He can die....you know it's a really good book when you don't like (hate in my case) or really feel a connection with the characters!! I hope everyone who reads this book enjoys it as much as i have! :)

MissGB

Personal Favorite. As there are negative reviews posted here, they are few and far between. This is, by far, the best series I’ve ever read. The writing is detailed and lush, the characters so in depth they practically have a pulse. There is something for everyone: fiction, history, science fiction, romance. The only caveat: beware the first two chapters. They are exposition and make you wonder why you bothered; get through them, however, and you will not be disappointed.

Simply the Lady

Love love love this series!. This is such an incredibly well written historical romance series. It has it all!

Cyber mommy

Outlander. Bet you can't eat....er....read just one!

JAB2015

Easy, fun, but lacking character depth. It was not the greatest book I have ever read. Like many of the other reviews, I found the characters lacking and did not find them to be 'real.' However, I was simply looking for an easy and fun read which this did the trick! I don't think I'll continue the series and will stick to 'Gone with the Wind' next time I want an epic love story...

Exl3p3r

Fantastic!. I own this book in hardcover, as well as the remainder of the series so far. I re-read this at least once a year, always entertaining and captivating. If you're new to Diana Gabaldon I strongly recommend getting started - on a Saturday morning because you won't be able to put this down. The series has everything a person could be looking for, and is well written to boot. By far my favorite author, and my favorite series. I cannot wait for the next one!!

GAB8375

Best Series. This series has it all. Romance, history, adventure, mystery and humor and so much more.

Volley57943

Wonderful. I am completely in love with this book and now then entire series

What now 77

Outlander. Many years ago I was talked into buying this book in hard cover with the agreement that if I didn't like it, I could return the book. Because it was 'romance', I wasn't sure, but I bought the book anyway. I not only loved the book, I have read all 8 of the series, some more than once, and hope there will be another. '

Geweep

Great way to pass the time. Since buying this book years ago, I have come back to it over and over again. It's much more than just another romance. It's deep, detailed, and challenging. If I could give it more stars, I would

2pnuts

Unbelievable!. This is not a plot synopsis, just an encouragement to treat yourself. I am not sure why this book is in the romance category...for though it does have romance, it is NOT a trashy smut book. It is just a wonderful slice of fiction, maybe more correctly historical fiction. I have recommended this series more times than I can count, and have been profusely thanked every time. You will fall in love with Jamie and Claire, the clans of Scotland, and the fantastic way Diana makes you feel as though you are actually there witnessing it all. I envy the journey you are about to take. Enjoy!

Kelseyn7

Amazing. I love, love, love this series! My favorite of all time. Every book is amazing :)

Happiness is a must

I couldn’t put it down. I’d never heard of this book before the Starz series. I feel as though I’ve been missing something over the past 20 years. Not being an avid reader _Outlander_ changed that. It was captivating. I grew quickly attached to the characters and can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

Saza2323

Recommended for book lovers. Well written, interesting storyline and characters are very real. Probably on top of my "best I've ever read" list. I'm currently on my 3rd round and the story is still fresh everytime I read it.

Swtthng

Whole series. MUST READ WHOLE SERIES: amazing!!

Pfeifwife

meh. I love historical fiction, especially anything involving British history (don't even ask how many times I've read Pillars of the Earth). After hearing such exalted reviews about this series from so many friends I finally tucked into Outlander with great expectations. I was curious to discover the author's insights into the challenges Claire might have faced in adapting to a world without the things we consider basic necessities in the 21st century, but this book isn't about that. It's simply a series of outrageous predicaments of the characters' own making that perhaps Gabaldon was hoping would provide that page-turning, addictive reading experience. It would have been so much more satisfying to feel a bit of Claire's and Jamie's humanity along with their heroics. However, where Claire encounters challenges she seems to skip blithely past them, adapting with superhuman flexibility and cheery acceptance of her new circumstances. Her paramour comes across as a bit too perfect a hero, one who can be presumed dead in one moment (so much so that Claire, the nurse, is compelled to take his pulse) then minutes later come to life with a humorous quip about his condition. He is infinitely understanding, gallant and chivalrous, unconditionally loving and forgiving, capable of withstanding horrendous abuse, torture and physical harm only to heal himself into a state more robust than before, Jamie is more like the love interest in a bodice-ripper than a flesh-and-blood man with flaws and issues. Without deeper insight into who these people are and what makes them tick, they just frustrated me. I want to feel like I know the characters in a book, there needs to be something, a spark of familiarity that draws sympathy and compels me to care what happens to them. But I felt like I was reading an elaborately constructed Marvel comic book. I'm really disappointed. I was looking forward to reading the whole series but I think I'll be stopping after book one.

Fictionary

My Favorite Book of all Time. I've read the whole series. It's wonderful. The characters are real and well developed. The stories are intricate and interwoven. I love the romance and the history. I hope they never end.

DolceBacia

Love, love, LOVE!!. When looking for a new series to read, I had seen this one at the book store I frequented on numerous occasions. I hadn't heard about it before or anything so I was going in blindly, to the author and the series. Boy am I glad I made that decision! I can't get enough of these books! I read the first four books within a month. I couldn't put them down! I'm currently on the 5th book, idled that atThe Fiery Cross. I've recommended this series countless times and will continue to do so! I'm even more thrilled to see the series that's just debuted and hope it does the books justice!

Melissa AN

Loved it!. I really love this book. It's a keeper. It has a bit of history, fantasy, romance, adventure...too fun! I can't get anything done when I'm reading it!

Smith.osu

Great Read!. I read this book while driving cross country. Its a longer book, but I never got bored reading it. I loved all the characters and found myself wishing reading till mid morning because I could not put it down

Have loved it ... Love it ... Will always love it !!!!. Having read this book from a very early age, it remains to be one of my most favorite books of all time ... The story is amazing and captivating ... The characters and full and real ... It's just a good read ... It might be long but it's worth it !!! I have and keep recommending this book to anyone who asks me to suggest a book to read ;)

Minnmouse

Addictive!. This book held my interest right from the begining. I loved all of the characters. I really loved the good guys and REALLY HATED the bad guys! Great read!!!

NatP25

Excellent read!. So glad I finally started this series! Love it!!!

Bradsgirl007

Amazing!!!. One of the best series ever written! I have finished all of the released books to date and can't wait for the next in the series!

Tsierer

Pleasantly surprised. Although I've seen Gabaldon's books in the bookstore over the years, I never paid them any attention because they are Fantasy books... However, I really like Game of Thrones and recently saw a trailer for Outlander on cable, so I thought I should check out the book. Lo and behold it was one of those Gabaldon books I always ignored. I was mainly intrigued about finding out how the author was going to write realistically before and after the time travel AND make the time travel part believable. Well, I found I couldn't put the darn book down... Now I'm on to the second volume!

SevenPaperMen

5 stars? How about 10?!. I consider myself an avid reader. I've read a little of a lot. This is the best series I've EVER read. I have every book in print and half in audiobook. I love having them on my iPhone now too!!

Cnash23232321

Whew. I am so glad this book is over. Unfortunately the series continues on for another five or six books. I just don't even know how to describe this book. It was LONG and long winded. I found myself skipping huge chunks of this book simply because the author blathered on about nothing more than the scenery or other boring things. The action and story line were great but they were only 25% of the story. Obviously this is a New York Times best seller for some reason (though that reason is beyond me). I would not recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a good read or a read they can lose themselves in. However if you are looking for a book that will keep you interested enough to want to know what happened but then bored enough to finally turn to Wiki summaries then this book is for you.

Highside22

Read it!. My Mom and Sister-in-Law have been bugging me for a year to read this series. I am so glad I finally did; it is fantastic! I fell in love with Jamie along with Scotland. All of the characters and the plot are complex and will have you hooked in no time. I suggest you get to reading.

TadpoleLes

Outlander - Book 1 is absolutely spell binding!. I finally finished the book in 3 days. I was spell bound the whole time and could hardly put the book down. It is magical and riveting. The characters came alive in my head and kept me interested until the very last page!

Books and bobbles

Outstanding!. I have read this whole series and I believe it has ruined all other books for me. It is by far the best series I have ever read. The characters are fantastic and complex. The love story unbeatable. I suggest these books to everyone from 20 to 80. Read these books!

JjkkKAwesome

One of my all time favorites. If you love historical fiction or fantasy, you are going to love this book. I love it so much I re- read the past books just to be up to date before reading each new book release. The main character, Claire is a women from the future who has found herself in the 1700s, in the midst of the Scottish Jacobite Rebellion, and of course she already know what happens. Meanwhile, she is falling in love, and doesn't know if she can change the last based on what she knows of the future. EXCELLENT READ.

Bugmebu

Reeling from separation anxiety(it's got everything). I found a second hand copy of the second book (Dragonfly in Amber) a year ago. I wanted something to pass the time while spending 2 months with my hospitalized father. It was mostly to lull me to sleep. I was disappointed because it was a series and I had no way of finding the other series in second hand bookstores. However, when I became determined to know the story of the next book I never regretted getting a credit card to purchase the books from Amazon. 6 books later in just two months and in time for the TV series and the latest Written in my own heart's blood( which I couldn't wait to read but paced myself so it wouldn't end so soon & then would have to wait 4-5 years for the next one) I'm missing the characters because they became as real to me as my own family.

KatieB1123

Doesn't get much better!. This book is like crack! You can't help coming back for more, and the best part is there are 6 more books just like it. The premise sounds a little out there, I know, but this is one of the best dramatic, comedic, action-packed, science-fiction, historical, and sexy pieces of literature ever written! Once you get past the set up in the first 50pages you are hook, line, and sunk into a delightfully outlandish story that you'll recommend to all your friends.

Cricket@law

Unbelievable. I am an avid writer and reader. And this story is by far the best story I've ever read in my entire life. It's so well crafted. Wonderful! Wonderful job!!
