An Apple Books Classic edition.

If you’ve only ever seen Wuthering Heights on screen, you may have an image of Catherine and Heathcliff as the ultimate star-crossed lovers. But that’s just scratching the surface of this iconic Gothic romance. Emily Brontë’s only novel is an unabashedly dark tale of passion and revenge that created shockwaves upon its publication in 1847.

Without spoiling too much, the original Heathcliff is breathtakingly vengeful, cruel, and possessive, not the deeply misunderstood romantic hero of some adaptations. And Brontë’s story does not end happily ever after. After tragedy strikes, Heathcliff haunts the swirling mists of the Yorkshire moors, consumed with possessing a ghost. A must-read for fans of Gothic literature, this novel will appeal to anyone who loves a creepy story.

Housewife loves sonos

Wuthering Heights. A dark ominous book that was filled with selfish, unforgiving, vengeful, hate filled, loveless characters. I read on thinking there has got to be a hero somewhere. There has to be some hope or forgiveness in the lives of these characters. Catherine Linton Heathcliff was probably the closest to being the heroine. But still a character motivated out of sheer selfishness. This was a story that truly depicts how the lack of love, grace, or forgiveness in ones life leads to jealous murderous hatred that destroys lives. Not a book that I would recommend to anyone despite the reputation of the author as a classic literary author.

Aqzxcyu2000

Boring but great. Too many added words that didn't need to be there, the story was great but the length of nothing wasn't.

Tiffkungpo

Adored. Of course this very special classic is adored. A timeless piece that will be forever engraved within my mind.

LUCKY 4508

Wuthering Heights. A book I had head of and wanted to read , or thought I wanted to read. I gave it three stars , could have been five but it just couldn’t get there A story of cruelty and expectance Hard for me to absorb, coming from a different area And region Excepting dominance I guess it hits to close to the sheep of this area.

ZebraFlake

Story of Stockholm abuse. Dumbest woman ever. Knows the guy still loves her dead sister, he TELLS her to steer clear while she throws herself at him, he brutally kills her dog & says he’ll do the same to her if they marry, and surprise, he’s abusive. THEN she plays the victim when she can’t convince him to love her anymore. Don’t waste your time.

Tswirlz14

Wuthering Heights. I read this as part of the IB curriculum at my high school and loved the book! It is an amazing love story!

Kindra rea

So long and boring, sorry. I know this is a classic and that’s exactly why I wanted to read it, but cmon. It was tough to get through. Took me all summer and a lot of extra motivation to want to finish this. It gets better at the end, but literally just reading a short synopsis would have been ok for me.

ShellyBmusic

Nothing to rave about. I have, at my age, read thousands of books. I love period pieces and often find myself using a word or phrase from old English, Irish or Scotish, much to the confusion of family. I finally decided to pick up Wuthering Heights, never having had occasion to read it but knowing it is considered a classic. Having read it, I can't for the life of me understand why! I must say that I am quite disappointed. I always imagined it to be some great love story that ended in tragedy. It is in fact a tale of love, but a love grown out of selfishness, rebellion, abuse and great dysfunction. Had I any clue, I would have left it on the shelf and my imagination intact.

Mellyindian

A must. It's a horrendous perfectly written story that's a literary must. Bronte is genius .

Gaurang.karwande

Fascinating and equally frightening. A epic tale

Miraiiik

Intense and Rich. I read this for my AP Lit class, and at first I wasn’t excited to read it but that soon changed. The book has so many complicated characters and themes that it makes it worth the slow start. The relationships between the characters are certainly frustrating and intriguing. I absolutely loved the story and highly recommend it.

The Lovely Reader

A Cornucopia of Literary Themes. There’s love, coming of age, violence, intrigue, the long game, tragedy, envy, malice, redemption, and religion. Something for everybody. I enjoyed it. I enjoy the mildly flowery prose. If you like classics, you’ll like this.

Kenna_drms429

In response to the first review ^^^. To whoever said the Bella and Edward thing as one of the first reviews let me be the first to say OK BOOMER. The classics are for everyone so shut it.

Concerned user😱

I have to read this for school cri. Whyyyyyyyy idk if its any good but i have to read if for ap lit so whaaaa

Almee06

It’s okay. Just finished reading this book. Now, after reading Pride and Prejudice, my bar has been set so high that no other book compares to it. So, on it’s own, this book is quite okay. The story is very, for the lack of better word, common. I have read numerous books which progress in a similar fashion, and conclude the same way as Wuthering Heights. Overall, it’s a good one time read.

What I Thought. I really liked Wuthering Heights. It was recommended to me by someone who knows what they are talking about when it comes to books, and they loved it. It took me a little while to get into it at first, but about halfway through the book, I really got into it. I recommend this to anyone who likes Victorian novels, and tragic love affairs.

@#$&*suz

Wuthering Heights. I can’t imagine that the author after writing such a rich and descriptive story didn’t write again. Her work is rich in detail both in characters personally and their environment. The author made you feel the moors, walk the hills and smell the wind. Then feel the revenge that Heathcliff imposed on the innocent characters of this book. A truly great story that should be required reading to every young person everywhere. A great study in a defective personality, and to analyze on what lead to Heathcliffs self destruction.

Cjefjdnfjndkf

Worldly and Investing read!. The novel is extremely well written. Although it is an advanced read for some, it is worth the trouble. The novel’s plot is intricate, investing, and heart-wrenching at times. Emily Brontë was incredible at incorporating her real life experiences into her characters which makes them seem so life-like and unique. The themes in this book are spot-on and described in great detail. overall an incredibly enjoyable for those interested in English literature and a great classic for those who love reading! absolutely loved investing myself this book for a bit, and hope that you will enjoy it as well.

Brooklyn879123455670

Astonishing. A great start to my binge reading of the classics.

MightyThor4

A Captivating Tale. Emily Brontë did a seamless job at writing a story with truly detestable characters that still hold your interest as you read them. A must read for fans of gothic literature. Even, the setting is a character in this classic, in my opinion. I don’t think I will ever be the same after reading Wuthering Heights, like any good book does. It is a captivating tale of revenge that is as horrific as an old version of a fairy tale.

Ragnag

Wasted time. Sucked! Too many words, depressing and ending lame. Does tell you how not to be and makes you greatfull for your own life and happiness.

TX WonderWoman

For Real. Strange. Like a Jerry Springer episode

Californian100

Okay in terms of entertainment value. *spoiler warning* It really started to pick up for me after Catherine died, but before that, I had a hard time finding the motivation to read through it. The writing is very good and the characters are extremely well fleshed out.

GlitzandGlamber

Wuthering Heights. This was a really good, enjoyable book. It was quite sad, but I couldn't put it down. Definitely would recommend it and don't regret reading it at all! :)

Better to read than to watch. Much better than the movie.

Quite a tale…. Bronte paints a picture of her characters so well that you feel invested in each of their outcomes. Hard to stop reading.

ACJackson80

Incredible. This book was awesome, If you loved Ender's Game or the Matrix, you'll love this

8venus45

A classic. I don't remember reading this in School, I do know many read it that one time. Books become classics for a reason, their story is timeless, the characters come to life, and it is brilliant. This checks all those boxes. A wonderful winters reading, enjoy

Renesgame

Wuthering heights.. This is very intriguing when you know who the author was and what scandalous writings this was in her time. I am 48 and really read this for the first time not commissioned by a school. It will haunt me for months and be thought provoking for years to come. I highly recommend ready and finish it with the PBS version for visual and sound. They nailed it !!

Judy Crous

vampires and ghosts!. a truly beautiful ghost story, full of generational drama, and somehow, also full of redemption. wow.

Love kills Heathcliff. It’s true.

Intense Romance Thriller. This book is such a classic. It’s a mixture of romance and thriller. It’s intense and heavy but sweet at the rame time. The ending however didn’t satisfy me but overall wonderful book.

Susankayeff

The tragedy that resonates. This is a magnificent novel that pulls me in each time I pick it up. The characters are so beautifully developed as the tragic love story unravels. Emily Bronte truly proves herself to be one of the best lady authors of her time with this timeless literary masterpiece.

Chinkknbcsss

Twisted Love story. "Love is patient. Love is kind. It does not envy or boast. It is not proud, rude or self-seeking. It is not easily angry and keeps no record of past mistakes. It does not delight in evil. It rejoices in the truth." This unsettling, unnerving, disturbing and gruesome novel is not for everybody. But in its own peculiar way, it has a special place in my heart as a classic tale, old as time. The beauty of this treasured piece lies in the uncanny, conniving, deceitful and full of hatred protagonists Catherine and Heathcliffe. "Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same." Their love hate relationship throughout the years is surreal. They both yearn for each other. Instead of revealing it with love and affection, they hurt each other. It's an abusive Victorian novel, set in Yorkshire wilderness. People who are too uncivil for civilized that the confide themselves to the outskirts of the moor and live in solitude. "Be with me always, take any form drive me mad! Only donot leave me in this abyss, where I can't find you!" Despite the unsettling scenes this read really makes you question if people are born evil or the circumstances they go through and how they are treated by their fellows, molds them into cold hearted, ruthless monsters who is always in pursuit of revenge and oppression. "I have not broken your heart. You have broken it and in breaking it you have broken mine." The emotional magnitude of this book is extensive. The thought provoking and unapologetic quality of Bronte's writing is seductive in its own way. While reading this dark humor story, you might feel the urge to throw it away. Like it's a game of personal endurance. Yet you keep reading because redemption awaits. Despite the poison infused in each character and scene, there is still a lingering concept of hope that keeps you going.

LMPLPN

Wuthering Heights. Dark, oppressive, awful

Puanani Readz

Roller Coaster of emotions. The characters in Wuthering Heights are so unique. I’ve never read a book with such characters that you hate but at the same time are rooting for... I felt devastation for the most part.

Pages missing. So far 17 pages missing! So frustrating!

Earthmother1999

Antiheroism at its finest. A hauntingly beautiful story centered around complex and extremely human characters. Heathcliff is the proverbial antihero, often romanticized for his abiding love of Catherine Earnshaw, which to be fair, would be better described as obsession than love. Catherine and Heathcliff are both extremely selfish and repeatedly make wrong decisions, especially with respect to love and marriage, bringing great suffering upon themselves and others. Still, their backstory elicits compassion, and Heathcliff's enduring affection is romantic in a way, which is probably why many readers see his vengeful and selfish acts not as those of a true villain but as those of a sort of fragile, flawed, and deeply damaged hero.

Miss_tarelea

A GREAT book. It' like 7 years since i red the book, but i still compare al the books to this one. It did impress me a LOT. About human nature, betrayal, money, love, hope (your hope for a happy ending) it's all in this book.

Matt Lalonde

An heretical review of Wuthering Heights. A great novel you'd be better off not reading. This book has no likeable characters, no EMPLOYED characters, endless and tiresome emoting by women and frail men (OK one frail man) and one character who serves no useful purpose other than as a surrogate for the reader. Another character has such a thick accent, it's impossible to inderstand what he says. I was 70% of the way through the book before I realized Bronte could not possibly, by the end of the novel, bring me to care about the fate of any character. Every single one is despicable. I can now say that I read the novel cover to cover and, although I understand that the structure is unique and innovative, I'm not sure it was worth forcing myself through the last 30% of the book to get to the unsatisfying end. I fully admit that the story and structure in Emily Bronte's "Wuthering Heights" is worthy it's place in the classics, but that doesn't mean you have to slog through it. Read Dickens instead.

M7itzl9831

Very good read.... Having read many Dickens classics, I was familiar with the style of Bronte’s writing. I admit to being hooked on this work from page 1, when Lockwood first meets Heathcliff. Wonderful story from an author whose career ended too soon.

Branks16

A Must Read. Wuthering Heights is truly a phenomenal book. Do not overlook it because it is a classic. It is a great read for all ages.

I do not like it. I thought that it was too long

EXCELLENT. Great story. Heath cliff was a very abusive man. He hurt others and liked being evil. I enjoyed the story and the characters. I highly recommend. LADY PEPPER ROSE SEPTEMBER 2021 FREEPORT NEW YORK

Three. The reason I rated this a 3 is because of the language it is more of a old style language then these days were we say LOL

Yo Yo😜😜

Classic and amazing. This book is captivating and a great classic. But here's the thing, I don't like the characters, Catarina and Heathcliff see, both treacherous, but one of the reasons I love it is because they both choose to ignore the others sins and faults.

Ljjhehe

It gets good at the end. I was very confused on its story format at first, but I got used to it after reading like,,, the whole book.

Expected more. Classic love story. Reading is difficult as it’s old English. I very much disliked Heathcliff. Before reading this book I always thought of Heathcliff as an unrequited lover.

To All Who Haven't Heard of Wuthering Heights:. Wuthering Heights is easily one of the most phenominal and wrenching stories of all time. It is a true classic, written by a darkly gifted woman. Since it was written so long ago, the style requires patience. But if patience is given, the reader will be very richly rewarded. Be prepared, however, to spend most of the time reading in tears. Five stars! Six, ten, twenty if I could.

What a classic!. Wow. I’m glad I stuck with it, as it’s a bit of a muddle in the first quarter of book. But it all starts to come together and you won’t want to put it down! Great Read!

Dizzybra

Definitely not a typical romance.. A fantastic book. But i think the reviewer before me, may be in for a bit of a shock. It is a grim haunting tale, about unrequited undying love. And how badly people can treat each other. Very tough affecting novel. But a tremendous one, none the less.

MsMaz51

Captivating. Brilliantly told, I couldn't put it down. Better to have read it now, as an adult, than when I gave up because of the language, as a child.

Kileeblue

Withering heights. What a powerful love story. Love and pain is captured so wonderfully. A romance that is both is fire and ice.

Such-a-romance!

Can't wait!!. I have only before heard about this book. I have been told that this book is an incredible romance, a beautiful novel and what's more, a lesson in love. Whether or not this is true, I will tell you soon :-)

Timeless.... A absolute timeless classic, I've read it so many times but I still enjoy it as if I've never read it before.. All the characters are captivating, and I still can't work out if I think Heathcliff's a hero or villain!

Wonderful!. A delight

Griping. Once I got used to the old fashioned terminology I became absorbed in the story and couldn't stop reading it. Each character was described so well and I was torn between thinking Heathcliffe was a complete monster and a poor heartbroken victim. A thoroughly good read.

Wuthering Heights. The best book I have ever read. The language isn't too tricky for me, even though I'm eleven. Definitely get it. Best book of all time and the only book Emily Bronte ever wrote; she wrote other poems. Recommend all other books by Charlotte Bronte and Anne Bronte. Jayne Eyre is another really good book but language is same difficulty as Wuthering Heights. Emily Bronte's stage name was Ellis Belle as in those times publishing books by women wouldn't sell. They used male names and hid their female identities. Search up their history it's extremely interesting. Really love this book. Recommend it to any other people you know.

Gfiygukcg

Terrible. Although a lot of action takes place it seems to have a dead monotone all the way through like nothing is happening. I hated it!

Lemony sniket

Solid book. I read this book on holiday and I thought it was very good I was a bit confused with the change of past and present but the characters are really strong I recommend it fully

Shnooci

Amazing!. I have read it twice, it is so well written that I felt myself their with the characters. A definite must read in classic litrature.

Badsworth Girl.

withering Heights.. Brilliant read.Have read this book on numerous occasions it only gets better each time I read it.How could a young women brought up in a Parsonage daughter of vicar almost two hundred years ago write such a masterpiece , truly a must read.

Suzie-chops

Disappointing. I was really let down by this book. I didn't like the style of writing and I thought the plot was really disappointing too as I was expecting a romance novel whereas this was really just a tale of misfortune. I found it really hard to concentrate on reading it and it took me about 2 months to finish hahaha, maybe not my type of book.

Fantasy book lover 😀😀😀😀

What a classic. The story is really complex and it is intertwined well but some parts are slightly confusing to understand because of the dialect but overall it is an excellent book.

It was good. Good book should read it plz

A good read when you are young. Did this for a level 25 years ago. I really enjoyed then but this time I did not. Maybe it is a book best read when young and passionate.

I am not qualified whatsoever. This book was pretty interesting. Heathcliffe’s character is really conflicting. I found it a bit hard to understand at first so you might wanna look up who’s who. Still, I think this book is a good read, not to long as well.

Krievkalne

Masterpiece. Wonderful book, gripping story line. Surprised about moments of violence throughout it, but I guess that is what made it so real and not another romantic soapy story. Highly recommend for everyone who likes a bit of classic 👍

Wuthering Heights. The literature is stunning...

Wanted to like it. Wanted to read this as it is a classic, but was sorely disappointed. There are many valuable qualities the book has - Christian virtue, kindness in the face of cruelty, frankness regarding others' rude and immoral behavior- but there is such horror and angst throughout its pages! I wondered how much more I could take; and because of this I was soldiered on. The ending was not the spectacular resolution I had anticipated. It left me wanting and even feeling a little cheated for having read all those pages and ending up dissatisfied with the conclusion.

Mamadeag

Wuthering Heights. Loved absolutely loved this book!! Can't believe I hadn't read it earlier in life. Beautiful prose, thoughtfully planed out and the ending left you thinking about Heathcliff and Catherine for many days.

Wuthering Heights. So much darker than the story I remember from the movie with Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff. Relentless and downright weird. As bleak as its setting. Stoke up the fire and settle into a great, classic, richly detailed, mesmerizing tale of obsession.

Wuthering Heights. Just want to point out that Jane eyre was written by the "other"sister, Wuthering Heights is good, but no where near as exciting as Jane

Chereyl

Wow. It is a dark, deep, passionate classic and should be read at various times in ones life. It means something different at 40 than it did at 19. It doesn't matter if you are reading this because as one reviewer wrote "Edward and Bella told you to".... Just read it. And read it again if it has been a while since you last did. Above all else read it to enjoy it. While it is dark, much of life is and you will find a little Heathcliff and Cathy in most people you meet.

Kuque1

Awful : Wuthering Heights. It was dark, depressing, and NOT a joy to read! It took me over a year to get thru it! Baffled at how such a book could be considered a "classic."

Swalk52

A beautifully written trajedy. Wuthering Heights, from the get-go, came across as a book of misunderstood love. Miss Bronte writes in accordance with her times and the separate classes and the strain this brought, especially to those in love. I would have probably quit reading because of the lack of hope, so it seemed, but her characters are so vividly and well written that I continued the story to completion. I am glad I did. What a great book. A sad one, but one that is well worth the read.

Thing#1

Pretty good. I loved Jane Eyre, but this was a bit of a let down. I found myself waiting for the story to get better but I never did. It was interesting enough that i finished it, but definitely not anything awesome.

Hotrod Lincoln

Wuthering Heights differs. Having only seen the 1937 film version, this, my first read of the novel, was a shock. Clearly it was thought the viewing public would find a film, accurate to this tragic love story, very unpopular; as testified by the film's success at the time. The novel depicts a much more rapacious Heathcliffe, and the surprise which Catherine bestows on her deathbed. The film definitely took a lightweight telling of the story, yet keeping it as the tragic love tale that it is. If you adore the 1937 film, the book may not be recommended, for it's different, darker nature.

A Turkish Turkey

Not bad.. Honestly, I didn't think it going to be too interesting when I first picked it up, but I really enjoyed it!

Mid nineteenth century reality tv show. The characters of Wuthering Heights were like a train wreck you couldn't take you eyes off - or in this case stop reading about. The inhabitants of the Heights were first introduced to us as a classic dysfunctional family. They positively exuded hate for one another and they laid all the dirt for all to see with no shame. I couldn't stop myself from flipping through the pages to find out all the juicy details, and felt a little dirty and disturbed in the process. I found it less of a love story between Heathcliff and Catherine, and more about how not to raise your children if you don't want them to grow up into a catastrophic mess.

So Depressing!. This book is so depressing. From the beginning Heathcliff is so rude and vengeful. This is NOT something I would read "just for fun." I would only read this again if I had to. It made me want to throw myself off a cliff or need some Prozac.

Dark. A dark story, but, the grammatical style is unique.

A classic. I don't remember reading this in School, I do know many read it that one time. Books become classics for a reason, their story is timeless, the characters come to life, and it is brilliant. This checks all those boxes. A wonderful winters reading, enjoy

Wuthering Heights. While this book is incredibly dreary, if you're a fan of 19th century literature this is the book for you. A story of love, hate, and malice, Wuthering Heights takes place in 1801 when a Mr. Lockwood comes to live as a tenant for the belligerent Mr. Heathcliff and is interested to know the story behind his landlords family. A great book that I recommend to anyone with an interest in old stories.

Three. The reason I rated this a 3 is because of the language it is more of a old style language then these days were we say LOL

Coraal95

Loved it!. This really was a great book. The three-dimensional characters really made it relatable. I hated certain characters, but then I easily sympathized with them later in the book.

Must read Wuthering Heights. When I was a young teen I struggled with the long words and still read this almost straight through. What a book! Now that I'm much older I love it even more. Very insightful. Makes you think. A good read and if you don't know a word just hilight it and "define" it. You won't be disappointed. It belongs in every worthy collection.

What a read!. This book is utterly phenomenal. Everything about it was perfect; you can feel Emily Brontë in every sentence. I would suggest this book to anyone with the patience to read into it and appreciate it for the masterpiece that it is.
