America’s beloved and distinguished historian presents, in a book of breathtaking excitement, drama, and narrative force, the stirring story of the year of our nation’s birth, 1776, interweaving, on both sides of the Atlantic, the actions and decisions that led Great Britain to undertake a war against her rebellious colonial subjects and that placed America’s survival in the hands of George Washington.

In this masterful book, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence—when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

Based on extensive research in both American and British archives, 1776 is a powerful drama written with extraordinary narrative vitality. It is the story of Americans in the ranks, men of every shape, size, and color, farmers, schoolteachers, shoemakers, no-accounts, and mere boys turned soldiers. And it is the story of the King’s men, the British commander, William Howe, and his highly disciplined redcoats who looked on their rebel foes with contempt and fought with a valor too little known.

Written as a companion work to his celebrated biography of John Adams, David McCullough’s 1776 is another landmark in the literature of American history.

Must Buy. This is a great read. Both sides had something to loose but only onside had something great to gain. This book really gives insight into the redcoats as well as the colonies.

Great for students of all ages. I use this text in my classroom and have for years. This is a historic read of events that is deep in content and easy to read. It passes the history teacher’s test.

Rauke57

Excellent. I felt the book was both informative and entertaining. Seldom have I read historical accounts that provide the right level of detail. This author keeps you interested without making you feel you're in an college level history class. A good read for anyone who enjoys this era of American history.

Riveting!. The story of the Revolution is told so eloquently by David McCullough that it reads more as a vibrant and wildly entertaining story of courage than a traditional history text. Engaging and unforgettable.

Riveting, Revealing,. Oh, that Mr. McCullough had taught at my high school! More there would have been in class and fewer at the donut shop; more future teachers would have sprung from the class of '61 to inspire other students with the truth of the Republic rather than the shadowy liberal view of the current curriculum. Keep going, Mr. McCullough, keep going.

Awesome. A must read.

Great book!. Through great detail and an awesome ability to tell a complex story, the author brings to life the most significant year in American history. He mixes in first hand accounts and facts in a way that makes historical events come to life in a vivid story. A must read for anyone interested in American history, especially the revolution years.

How Close. This is a very interesting book that make you realize how close this country came to remaining a possession of Great Britain. How did these great thinkers of the time think they could defeat the greatest Army of the world at that time, with no Army, no weapons, no ammunition and no military leaders and no money! It is truly a miracle that we became a nation! My, how close we came to just being a big burr under King George's seat.

Jeffro an American

Too long. To long a narrative

WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ. If you hate reading about history don't even look at this book. This book has little dialogue and no plot. The first chapter itself is really bad. Definitely would not suggest this book to ANYONE. 🤦‍♂️

Prophet Amos

Plucky American Spirit. As a Historian, I have read many books covering our struggles for independence. Moreover, this is a nice detailed account of the trials of our early republic. Well written and informative, which makes you proud to be an American. The only downside was that the images/documents should have been interspersed throughtout the book, when relevant. McCullough should have included maps detailing the battles also.

On the Great Marsh

Outstanding. This author is simply outstanding when it comes to telling this nations history. I have read most of Mccullough’s work and have the rest at hand. Not a syllable of fiction between the covers. A must read.
