I Loved This Website. Night Owl Reviews website Lady Calpurnia, Callie, Hartwell wasn’t the family beauty. That went to her younger sister, Mariana. She didn’t really reflect society’s view of beauty. She wasn’t outgoing causing her to be pretty much a wall flower which is why 10 years after she was presented to the ton, Callie was still single and sitting with the spinsters. Callie was good at following the rules and doing what was expected. When Mariana becomes engaged, Callie has a talk with her brother, Benedick leading her to making a list of things she’s love to do, if reputation wasn’t an issue. High on this list, that is quite outrageous, is a kiss; a passionate kiss and Callie knew who she’d like to have this kiss with, Gabriel St. John, the Marquess of Ralston. Callie had met Ralston at her first ball and he made such an impression on her that she’s been drawn to him ever since, following his life through the papers and the gossip. Ralston, however, has had a wonderful time being a rake. This behavior is going to come to a quick end though when Ralston learns of a half sister that will need to be presented to society. He’s not sure how he’s going to do this but he will do his best! After several glasses of sherry, the idea of visiting Ralston for a kiss in the middle of the night sounds like a good idea. Callie finds more than a kiss when Ralston’s butler escorts her to Ralston’s bedroom. There, Callie and Ralston make a deal that changes their relationship. I loved this book. The characters were well developed and interesting. Callie knows she’s suppose to follow the rules but wants so much to have the freedom to explore things she knows men can do but women can’t. This hidden little rebellion was terrific and her list of things that she wanted to do seemly so innocent by today’s standards and so wanton by hers. Ralston or Gabriel is having his world turned upside down by not only finding Callie where she shouldn’t be but by having to figure out how to deal with a younger sister. Each is a woman with a mission but poor Gabriel is at a lost as to what exactly his role is suppose to be. As Callie’s adventures puts her places she normally wouldn’t be, she finds herself in situations that you have to laugh at. How does a courtesan entertain 3 men? Does Ralston really want to answer that? But it’s not as if Callie can run wild. She still has to conform to society’s rules and she’s agreed to help Ralston’s sister be presented. Any blemish on Callie will reflect on her so being found out is not acceptable. As Callie worked her way through her list, I was so wrapped up in her adventures that I didn’t want to put this book down. She had me laughing and encouraging her on. I loved that she had standards and wouldn’t accept anything less. And poor Gabriel, how could you not feel for a man who has had his entire world shaken. Things moved along at such a fast pace that I felt compeled to keep reading. I might miss something! Gabriel and Callie’s story may be finished but she as another list and both have unmarried brothers as well as Gabriel’s sister. Hopefully, this means that we’ll see this interesting couple again as we revisit historic England and her high society.

Refreshing. Loved it! Not the typical " perfect rare beauty" heroine!!!

Don't skip over this!. A must buy. Funny, passionate, intriguing, daring, lovely, sensual....get. This. Book.

MacLean Shine’s in her first Rules of Nine. Sarah MacLean captured my romance literature heart over a decade ago when I first read her Nine Rules to Break when Romancing a Rake. She gives a refreshing modern twist on the old tropes of Innocence, Rake’s and Duels by building chemistry from characters that grow into love from a place of like and surprising respect. A great read!

Captivating. I started and never stopped until it was finished. It was worth every passing moment.

Severe insecurity. Good storyline but sometimes I would just cringe at how desperate and severely insecure the heroine is. (SPOILER AFTER THIS) The extremely handsome duke has to consistently compliment her. She doesn’t ever find herself beautiful by herself but after marrying the man she had an unrequited love for 10 years is when she feels beautiful. The ending was annoying in that sense.

Excellent !!. What are the elements of a great book. Great plot, well thought out characters and good written. This book as it all, a must read.

A must read!. I feel like I’ve read every regency romance novel and this is my favorite. It’s so simple and perfect. A very well written novel that just really comes together perfectly. Fingers crossed for Benny’s love story!

Loved it!. Sarah MacClean's debut book seems like it was written by an old pro! Well written, excellent character development, engaging plot, thrilling love scenes, who could ask for more... Except for a sequel! Made me smile, laugh and cry. Truly a wonderful read. Bouht the ebook but will have to buy the actual paper book to add to my shelves!

Great read. Loved the story and relationship between the characters.

Melancholy. Took me a while to finish this book. The general tone of the book is melancholy. The heroine is 28 and ON THE SHELF. Get used to reading that phrase. It’s an okay read with some tepidly scandalous adventures but does not make my top 100 list. The only really racey part is when the rake ( in a gentleman’s club ) is trying to explain an s&m scene. How can one woman please three men?

Awesome. Great book!

Phenomenal debut for a phenomenal writer. This is the first book I read of the authors and boy was I hooked! Strong characters with complex personalities made me really root for them. I loved Callie and Ralston in the way I love my real friends, meaning that even when I was cringing at their actions I still wanted nothing more than their happiness!

Great Read. I thought this book was a great read. It was a funny, sweet historical romance. The relationship between Callie and Ralston was fantastic, the banter between the two kept the book lively and highly entertaining. One of the best romances I've read lately

A Favorite from the Start. I wasn't even halfway through the book when I knew it would qualify as one of my top favorite romance novels. The clever wit and delicious scenarios had me laughing, blushing and craving more.

Awesome book. Happy I wasn't born in that time period because of my personality but I have to confess I enjoyed all her books, even thou by mistake didn't read in order. This is book one 1 for those that don't know like me. I enjoyed the entire book, the characters are amazing.

Nine Rules To Brake When Romancing A rake. Loved this book! If you want hot love scenes this has it, if it does not make breathless you have to be made of ice! The voyage the storyline took was none too shabby either. I'm off for another read!

Don't begin this book at bedtime. For some reason, I couldn't put this down and stayed up way too late, over three nights, to finish this. It was a fun diversion from my day-to-day routine. If you take Callie and Ralston to the gym with you, you may end up on the treadmill for an hour at least!

ELECTRIC!. Love the chemistry between the characters! A must read.

Will Definitely Enjoy This One. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will feel just as the heroine in this novel.

Callie was easy to relate to.. I liked Callie. Her insecurities were so real, something that many women her age today can relate to as well. It was amazing to see her transform from a timid bookworm, a wallflower uncomfortable in her own skin, to a woman who is proud of her intelligence, unafraid to be herself. Perhaps today, with media promoting a certain body/personality type, girls can learn a thing or two from Callie.

Best read for 2010. Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! Had me smiling and giggling up to 2 in the morning reading this wonderful book! A great read, would recommend to anyone who likes historical romance. Best read all year!!
