The Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression, a book that galvanized—and sometimes outraged—millions of readers.

First published in 1939, Steinbeck’s Pulitzer Prize-winning epic of the Great Depression chronicles the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s and tells the story of one Oklahoma farm family, the Joads—driven from their homestead and forced to travel west to the promised land of California. Out of their trials and their repeated collisions against the hard realities of an America divided into Haves and Have-Nots evolves a drama that is intensely human yet majestic in its scale and moral vision, elemental yet plainspoken, tragic but ultimately stirring in its human dignity. A portrait of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless, of one man’s fierce reaction to injustice, and of one woman’s stoical strength, the novel captures the horrors of the Great Depression and probes into the very nature of equality and justice in America. At once a naturalistic epic, captivity narrative, road novel, and transcendental gospel, Steinbeck’s powerful landmark novel is perhaps the most American of American Classics.

This Centennial edition, specially designed to commemorate one hundred years of Steinbeck, features french flaps and deckle-edged pages.

Hate the first half, fell in love with the last half.. I never heard much of the book, only read it because of East of Eden. Initially I hated the book because it was written in hillbilly. Once the trip went to California, the book got amazing. I was not aware of any of the details and was amazed about it's capitist take. Great nook, I can see why it's an American classic. I you do not know anything about this book, check it out.

Did not like this book. Very boring and bad plot whatever the plot actually was😂

Rose💁

Boring and horrible. Horrible book for high schoolers. It's too in depth and depressing. Hard to catch interest to and takes forever to read. Do not recommend reading for fun.

Grapes of rath. Worst book In the world, has two whole chapters talking about a turtle.

Lalalalalalzjhsyhsbshhwu

no. This was probably one of the most boring, un-interesting books I have read...

Sample is no sample -annoying. The sample provided (before purchase) is commentary about the book and not a sample OF the book! Not sure this was the intention...

Great Book. I first read this book when my 11th grade English teacher gave it as a reading assignment. I was dreading it, and as soon as I started it, I couldn't put it down. I'm 41 now and am looking forward to reading it again. One of my all time favorites.

Skinnyminnie2

Grapes of Wrath. Excellent!! The verbiage used by the author created such vision and feeling that I could actually feel as I read. I was there with the story.

Fire. This book =fire

Best book ever. Some will say this book is boring and that there is no meaning to it. It actually goes by fast, not that you want it to because you want to get as much of the beautiful writing as you can. People that say this isn't a good book can go back to reading their romance filth.

DesignGirl80

The Grapes of Wrath. A moving story that, perhaps, Steinbeck could only write. A work of fiction that reveals truth.

1295mID

An American Work of Greatness. John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" demonstrates the multiple effects of true hardship and narrow hope. Unquestionably a revelation in American literature at the time (and even today), Steinbeck's writing engulfs you into the novel to discover the capabilities of man and woman during one of the toughest periods in U.S. history.

The Dragon Bone

A masterpiece.. This book is a masterpiece. A literary work that gives a human face to the suffering, injustice, and frustrations of those trying to survive in the dog eat dog world of the Great Depression.

DrummerOfTheBlackParade

Absolutely Not. I couldn't dumb myself down enough to read and follow whatever backwoods, swamptown language in which this was written.

NoBrainerToMe

Grapes of Wrath. Very descriptive picture of the oppression of simple country folks during the depression. Very sad , but an important piece of history that should not be forgotten. The ‘Grapes of Wrath’ was an accurate depiction since some of the smaller land owners went bankrupt due them unable to sell even healthy grapes due the low prices when they could not afford to harvest leaving not only the migrants but these landowners, destitute.

RyanjT

Um what?. There is only like 40 pages, what gives?

Insung96

TGOW. Slow book. Ending's real messed up, and so is the author. Ugh

Nickname yeahhhhhh

Good book. As someone having to read this in highschool, sophomore year, I really liked the book!

Hawkmoose

Great. Love this book!

Ydoineedanickname

A must-read. Immersive to the point that I forgot I was even reading a book. Beautifully written. An absolute must-read.

Foivos87

A monument of 20th century literature. Steinbeck’s famous work is very probably the best literature I’ve ever read. Very high quality of writing, a unique ability to recreate the pictures and the emotions, giving reason to the thoughts and make the actions understandable. A book that contains universal truths about human societies that should be revisited in contemporary America. I feel grateful and blissful for having the experience to read this book.

TRON0314

Eerily appropriate for our time.. To be short, The Grapes Of Wrath is jarring in the cruelty that happens to man by man as well as completely inspiring in what help man can get from fellow man and to what lengths they will go out of their way to accomplish that help. Steinbeck writes so descriptively and beautifully in parts that one cannot feel like the places he describes are heaven on Earth. He also gives characters a language that has preserved a piece of historical culture for all of his readers to discover. Even now- especially now- the context of The Grapes of Wrath and the plight of migrant families forced into difficult situations should be headed and allowed to inform people who vilify and have no mercy to certain persons that accomplish beautiful things in an ugly cultural landscape. A book that will last with me forever.

Dwardeng

A Sprawling American Epic. A family from Oklahoma travels west for a better life in California during the depression only to face great hardships and injustice. California's land barons are portrayed as they really were at the time. White slavery was very much alive. Steinbeck's greatest work.

Translatorlds

Don't listen to trolls and children. Don't read this book until you are of sufficient age to understand it. It is a great book. Great writing style and great tone. The only reason this has a 4 star total rating is because many people fail to recognise what the turtle chapter is about. I understand that some people may still not like it, but give it a try. Also check out the review of the 12 year old in the 1 star section. It's hilarious because Tolkien is even slower than steinback(different styles).

Cooliomatimi0

Horrible Sample. This is a review of this particular version and the sample that is given before purchase. I’ve heard lots of good things about this book, so I downloaded the sample to see if the first few pages might hook me. The sample gives you the first 76 pages. Of those 76 pages, only 3 are the actual book. The first 73 pages are, no joke, just forwards and notes on the text. What a waste of space. 3 pages is hardly a sample, it’s more like crumbs.

OG Snowflake

An utter masterpiece. The most beautifully written book I have ever read. Moving beyond tears. When I came to the end, I was seized by goose-bumps so intense my nipples hurt. Don't wait another SECOND of your life; read it.

Showchoirvixen

Dumb.. I love reading and I had to read this book for school and i hated it with a passion. It was very difficult for me to follow, pretty much the only thing i understood is it was dry and hot. I had to read Sparks notes so I could take the class. Don't read this unless you have to!

Aaronbz01

Why. Are 12 year olds reading this book? This isn't a kiddie book. Stupid teachers. Of coarse it's going to be boring to kids. This book wasn't written for kids. This is a true adult classic. If your a kid don't read it. If your an adult maybe young adult you will find this a great read.

Paulrichard10

Classic, excellent literature.. Some reviewers rated this a one star! They must be poor students indeed. This book resonates today more than ever. Particularly with the harsh way corporations have treated working people in the last couple of decades. Steinbeck nails old California with his awesome descriptions. He also describes the underbelly of capitalism. I've noticed the right wing has been targeting Steinbeck recently and Has been trying to discredit him. Read Steinbeck (In Dubious Battle also addresses the same topic) and learn that our economic system can be very unfair if unrestrained.
