A World of Curiosities

A World of Curiosities by Louise Penny Book Summary

INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Chief Inspector Armand Gamache returns in the eighteenth book in #1 New York Times bestseller Louise Penny's beloved series.

It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge.

But something has.

As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines.

But to what end?

Gamache and Beauvoir’s memories of that tragic case, the one that first brought them together, come rushing back. Did their mother’s murder hurt them beyond repair? Have those terrible wounds, buried for decades, festered and are now about to erupt?

As Chief Inspector Gamache works to uncover answers, his alarm grows when a letter written by a long dead stone mason is discovered. In it the man describes his terror when bricking up an attic room somewhere in the village. Every word of the 160-year-old letter is filled with dread. When the room is found, the villagers decide to open it up.

As the bricks are removed, Gamache, Beauvoir and the villagers discover a world of curiosities. But the head of homicide soon realizes there’s more in that room than meets the eye. There are puzzles within puzzles, and hidden messages warning of mayhem and revenge.

In unsealing that room, an old enemy is released into their world. Into their lives. And into the very heart of Armand Gamache’s home.

I have read every book in this series. I loved them all. I can’t wait for the next book to come out.

I really loved this book, but it was a bit too scary.

I have been a huge fan of Penny’s Inspector Gamache books until this one. It is very graphic in its description of pedophilia, and very disturbing. In addition, Ms. Penny has. Finally. Gone. Over. The. Top. With. Her. Sentence. Fragments. I am very sorry I purchased this book. If it was in paper form, I would throw it in the trash. Shame on you, Ms. Penny.

It started a bit slow for me, but I always enjoy spending time in three pines, with this group of characters. Love the twists in this one, and with out giving anything away, satisfied with the ending

The subtle nuances brought forward in this book and anything Louise Penny touches are beyond masterful. She never leaves anything unfinished, she ties all the strings together throughout her continued masterpieces. She leaves nothing, not smudges or unclear trails to the central plot. Not even a dangling participle. Brava Madame.

A very intricate weaving of thoughts, events and ideas into the best yet (in my opinion)… Had me on the edge of my seat and reading into the wee hours … Enjoy!

I have purchased and read all of the Gamache/Three Pines books. I have loved every one of them. This one kept you guessing who’s the bad guy? The end was exciting and I couldn’t stop reading. Louise is magnificent as always.

Boring, too. I read to the end only because I paid for it.

As a reader of the entire series, this book makes tremendous sense, tying together people and incidents that have made the books so wonderful along the way. The story is excellent. That said, it was darker and heavier that its most of its predecessors because in those books, for the most part, the place the reader goes for respite (Three Pines) is now the place at greatest risk. I enjoyed it a lot, but hoping the next one does not put everyone and everything at risk all at once. I love visiting Three Pines because it is not real life; because itself is the respite.

Ok

As I do at each book in this series, I say it could not have been a better written, more intricately plotted, and amazingly character driven work of art. I long for the next one.

Lost a night of sleep deep in this new Gamache tale - no regrets.

I have been looking forward to this book release! It’s worth the wait! Louise Penny is an articulate, amazing, heart stopping writer! Loved every page , every beloved character !

The beginning has drawn me as each of her Gamache Series has down. I love each character in Three Pines.
