A #1 New York Times Bestseller and New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice!

Legendary storyteller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higher—for that world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.

Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.

Magnificent, terrifying, and “spellbinding…packed with glorious flights of imagination and characteristic tenderness about childhood, Fairy Tale is vintage King at his finest” (Esquire).

“Good, evil, a kingdom to save, monsters to slay—these are the stuff that page-turners are made from.” —Laura Miller, Slate

Excellent Book. Classic King. Great story telling, great characters. Makes you wanting more.

Typh5000

Absolutely Brilliant. This story is one that I have thought about for many weeks after finishing. King weaves an epic adventure of true friendship and the power of our connections in Fairytale. Could not put this down and did not want it to end. I will love Radar til the end of time.🐕

B00KW0RM92

AMAZING!. I absolutely adore every single one of Stephen King’s works, this one really hit home. This book will always have a special hold on my heart. This is the kind of story that both warms the heart but also challenges everything we see and believe. And with that said, ‘long live Empis!’

Bunny_bud

10/10⭐️. This is my favorite book I’ve read by Stephen King. Highly recommend!!

D.S.B<3

GREAT read. It starts off slow, but each chapter gives you just enough anticipation to keep searching for more. I couldn’t put it down. Now that I’m done, I find myself wishing there were more of the story.

Jdhdkdfd

Great read. Another classic.

LooseeJ

Fantastic!. It’s Stephen King. What more can I say? I loved it!

Jillhardy2

LOVED FAIRYTALE!. Stephen King’s imagination just amazes me every time I read one of his stories. I’m there in the story, I can see what the characters see and feel what they feel. His writing is simply incredible!

Itmeltedintowonder

I wish I had more stars to give.. As a Constant Reader, this will enter my top 3. Loved every moment of it.

JodieRai

The Ultimate Fairytale. King tells the story as if it truly happened!

There are other worlds than these. Good book. Loved it.

Enjoyable read but nothing new. I enjoyed the beginning of the book a lot. Depends on the reader I suppose. What’s good about this book: the main character is written in a likable and human way (but still somehow seems to be a collage of too many positive character traits that makes it a little unbelievable). What I mean by this is he is a 17 year old boy who is both a top-tier athlete as well as a book nerd (among other things). The fantasy aspect is interesting. Reminds me somewhat of the lore behind Dark Souls video games. However, getting lost in this lore is a little difficult as King tries to interweave modern appliances into a medieval setting. Meshing the two worlds seems to make the suspended disbelief a bit harder. It also ruins the enchantment with a sense of kitschiness. Along this thread, King also makes his prose a bit garish and slipshod. He attempts to get “meta” about his story in a way that just seems like lazy writing (like the stories about people writing stories). The narrator, toward the middle and end of the book, CONSTANTLY talks about fairy tales and how what’s happening to him is “unbelievable like those fairy tales”, but then says over and over, “but this isn’t a fairy tale, it’s real life,” as if it somehow makes the story seem more gripping. Honestly, it seems a little like a story that King took shortcuts on. Will you like it? Depends if you’re a picky fiction reader like I am. Again, not unbearable and it was a well paced book, but it definitely wasn’t anywhere close to a favorite of mine.

JONNYFXM

King’s Fantasy Side at its Best!. Get ready to take an adventure into a fantasy world that perfectly conjoins our own familiarities and fantastical impossibilities. King is incomparable at creating worlds that are enough like our own to be relatable, and so magical and fantastic to be whimsical. The characters and their relationships are impeccable, leaving you wanting the absolute best for the good and beyond the worst for the bad. I always enjoy a SK read, but this one is special. It’s brutal and beautiful. It’s depressing and convivial. It ultimately leads to the question: could you give up absolute magic and beauty in order to save it? Incredible read, highly recommended.

What I Wished The Talisman Was. I love Stephen King’s fantasy work - I’m a huge fan of The Dark Tower - but I was always left a little disappointed by The Talisman. I felt like this story really scratched that itch for me all these years later. A kid on an epic quest who finds out he has mythical status in another world. I loved the characters and was hooked to learn what would happen to their world. A great read!

TarekHoteit

I miss the original Stephen King. I don’t usually criticize authors but these recent books of Stephen King lacks the originality of Stephen King. I wasted time reading these.

AprilFresh4U

Such an epic adventure!!. One of King's best! This fairy tale pulled me in immediately and it just got better and better. I didn't want this book to end!! I would love to read more about Charlie and his Empis brood of compatriots. This would be an epic series!! Here is to hoping!

DarthWarmonger44

A fun departure from King’s usual horror stories. Fairy Tale is a lot of fun. I enjoy when King delves into fantasy. This book reminds me a lot of the Talisman at times as the main character travels across a fantasy land in an attempt to rescue a loved one. (In this case Radar.) The middle of the book can be a bit slow, but the beginning and the ending are absolutely incredible.

Bxj3

Fairy Tale. Fairy Tale doesn’t really “feel” like Mr. King. He carefully combines fairy tales that readers remember with the life of a high school athlete who made a “spiritual promise” that someday must be fulfilled. He stumbles into a strange world because he loves a dog. Yes, there are monsters and evil to be dealt with along the way. However the story is really about relationships, determination, grit and loyalty.

Dmitrimom

don’t waste your time. just crap

Wild Bohr

Great fantasy!. One of the best fantasy books I’ve all year! Well written and draws you in!

Carland62

A tale to remember. Another great Stephen King story! I lost a lot of sleep as I simply could not stop reading! I love the references to the old Fairy Tales and other tales that we are all so familiar with! A story of great adventure, fantasy and a little magic thrown in; not to mention the evil in the story that sends chills down your spine! A really great read and different than the usual Stephen King thriller!

Rheresniak

Ugh…. I like many of King’s books, but this is certainly not one of them. It is long, unnecessarily drawn out, and a huge bore. What happened to King as a master of suspenseful horror writing? Unfortunately, he is nowhere to be seen in this dull tome.

WD- N-ATL

Fairy Tale is an excellent book!. Fantastic story! vivid language throughout the story. I saw the sky in Empris , felt the wind blow as the monarch’s fluttered in the sky and wished I could’ve sat by the fireplace at Dora’s cottage. Thanks Mr. King for another classic novel.

Not so hot!

Couldn’t wait to know what happened next. I love to believe in the idea that there is another world, and we just don’t know about it. I found this book fabulous. I love the fairytale part of it, modern day part of it and how it was all intertwined together. Definitely a different type of book for Stephen King. I highly recommend it.

Emma Dolly

Just Amazing. I could not get enough, so well written with fantastic characters.

Dodged21

I missed this King. One of King’s better works of late. There are some classic King tropes that will bring a smile to fans of the King of the 90’s. His recent foray into the overly political seems to have subsided a bit. Overall, true fans of King will appreciate the book as a testament to why they read King.

Hotdoglady907AK

Love it all the way till the end. Whimsical, fun, attention grabber from the beginning. I didn’t want the land of Empis to end. Very different from previous SK books I’ve read but this novel comes with no disappointments. King delivers a wonderful story in a mesmerizing manner as always.

Traveller 1154

Must love dogs. Should emphasize that the dog is the main character and drives the whole story. As I am not a dog lover, Radar, and her plot didn’t resonate with me at all. I loved the fantastical elements of the story, but again since the core is of and about a dog I wish I didn’t buy it.

JD Grantham

It was brilliant and didn’t want the story to end.. I love when I immediately connect to characters, and that is what happened here. The world King created, both above and below, was vivid and had me hooked after the first chapter. I don’t know if we will get a sequel or a spin-off, but if it happens I will be first in line to buy it.

Megan_Mary

The perfect fairy tale. This was just an overall good book and it all starts with a dog named Radar.

Jtheman5150

Slow. Too slow. Read 40% and lost interest

Clogue33

Couldn’t stop reading. Just an imaginative treasure.

Truleegus

Still think of these characters long after leaving them ! Got me through some dark days - ty S.K.. Love it !!

FrankenRead

Tugs at your heart. Really loved this book. I read almost all of King and this was absolutely one of my favorites. Brings joy to the heart.

Zipster7

A Worthy Read. Thank you, Stephen!

AlCain55

Wonderful Read!. I believe this has to be one of King’s best! I enjoyed the combination of Fantasy, Mystery, Horror and so much more. The interaction between young and old was so believable and enjoyable! And when you throw a dog into the mix, how can you lose!

Chefnigh61

Awesome. Long, but worth it

Artistic Rising

First Time King Reader. An absolutely enchanting read. King’s command of words and understanding of character assumes the best of the reader, and pulls you along. I couldn’t put Fairy Tale down, not even if I wanted to. Readers be warned: page turner ahead.

G-phase

Fairy Tale. Great story , the title of the book is exactly what it is . I really enjoyed reading it . Thank you

Soupsupper

Fairytale. This book is gripping and unpredictable, yet wholesome. It’s started off reminding me of to kill a mockingbird and slid into home like American Gods. A rare read for sure. I only hate that it’s over and now I’m craving another.

AshtonK17

Great Read. This was my first book by Stephen King and although, it was not what I expected it was a page-turner. Highly recommend

Choralriff

A good read. A good read. Nothing even close to vintage King, and certainly not horror. But still a good read.

Boocr

Misleading title…kinda. Such a better book than I anticipated. The title is misleading…and yet not. I can find a way to like all his books, but this one was easy to fall into and enjoy, only to be sad when it ends just because it ends.

Nessiethefoodie

Interesting at first. Like most King’s novels it’s managed by many plots and subplots along with regular references to other stories he’s done. I’m not a huge fan but this one held my attention then around half into it I lost interest and had a less than enthusiastic feeling bout pushing myself to finish it . It ended ok if you’re a fan this is a good read ; not for the fair of heart , it is 1000plus pages.

Areyoukiddin???????????

Long and boring. One of King’s weakest. I have read all of hiw books and this one bored and dissappointed me. King builds a nice story and then does not k ow how to finish it. Almost seems like he himself got bored with this book

Rev1mom

Fairy tales. This was a really good book! If you love fairy tales then you will love this book.

Dissatisfied 456781

Disappointed. I’ve read over 30 King books (some two times) and this by far was my least favorite. All throughout, I thought someone else must have written it because it was lacking what I typically enjoy in his novels.

Pnb121912

Starts out a little slow. Anyone with an imagination will absolutely love this book, although it does start off a little slower than expected. It’s a beautiful story all in all, and the word play is phenomenal!

Nonicknameabailable

Only S King Book I Stopped Reading. Always love S King’s book from his 1st published book. I could not get into this story at all, just bored with it. Moved on to Holly and loved it.

DMluvsyou

MAGICAL!!. Wow, he just gets better and better as he goes along. “Fairy Tale” is an absolute DREAM of a book with fantasy, humor, horror and heart. He’s not called the KING for nothing!! Read it!!! 🤩🤩🤩

He just knows how to write em. Felt like the book started off great and wrapped up a little too quickly, but was a good read.

Pastry Court

Fairy Tale - Stephen King. OMG!! So awesome! Stephen hits another one out of the park!

Lesley and Dayne

I love you Stephen King!. I had never dabbled in stephen king until now, but damn - Love that man. Love how deep and relatable and entertaining this book was

Paulisawesome123

Fairy Tale. Well, it is indeed a fairy tale. A generic one. A bit of a disappointment from such a great storyteller.

Jaden😁

Love. Wasn’t really expecting this read but it was wonderful nonetheless

Taisey19

Amazing. I have been home with Covid, this book has been my escape to another world. A world I want to live in. Thank you ST for another great tale.

Smart_Cutie

Fairy Tale. I couldn’t put it down. Wish there were answers to the questions at the end.

Le Nez Romain

Fairy Tale. What a wonderful childhood story filled with adventure, love, fear, hatred, and of course a story book ending. Wonderful, Mr. King. You have outdone yourself. I miss Charlie and Radar already.

Marzzy29

Fairytale. Another masterpiece from Stephen King!

Jonezy Something

Gratitude. Thank you Mr. King.

Great! addictive!

Amazingly adventurous!. Wonderful read from the master himself! Never lets me down, thanks, King. :)

RedMook

Fun read. Couldn’t put it down. Well written and good pacing.

Ishouldgetalibrarycard

Could not finish. I just really hate the fantasy world King created, as well as the protagonist and just about every side character. Opening this book and entering this world is depressing. I’m 800 pages in and nothing has really happened. I will not read this again and be content not knowing what happens.

19beth2324

One Stephen Kings Best books. I loved this book and did not want it to end but loved the ending. I loved the characters and saw them in my mind. I thought of this book after I read it and really enjoyed it. Thank you Stephen King.

Kraftygg

Another great SK story. Excellent. This story hooked me until the very end.

Kbayham

Strange and Pleasurable. King is a national treasure. The vivid writing and characters are some of King’s best. I hope he writes more about this place (below the barn floor).

FayRaven

Awesome Book!. I loved this twisted “Fairy Tale”! It truly had me glued to each page! It was a Roller Coaster ride from beginning to end!!

Hwilsan

Fairytales. I absolutely loved this book. Stephen King has done it again!!! I could see and hear each character in my mind’s eye; Great story teller that he is!!!

Hlrw

Amazing!. This is one of my favorite books by Stephen King. His story telling is impeccable. I suffered many mornings from staying up all night reading. You will love this book Long Days and Pleasant Nights

BELLBELLY1234

HOOKED. This is the best Steven king book I’ve read. LOVED IT. Was hooked from the beginning.

Tammie Welsh

One of my favorites from King. Could not put this down and felt myself so drawn into this world. You wind up caring for the characters deeply. Needed a book to get lost in, this was perfect.

Tickled_pink

Fairy Tales is an amazing book by one of the Best Authors EVER!. If you love to read and feel everything a character is going through Mr Kings books does just that. This is an amazing story and one I couldn’t put down.

Alabam

Dark Young Adult Novel. This is essentially a YA novel, but leans a little dark and demented. Only Stephen King could have written something so silly at times, but kept the reader rapt the entire time. Hard to put down. Great read

Tolleville

Best book yet!. The gunslinger series was my favorite of all of his books until I read Fairytale! It is now my favorite of all of his books and I have read them all and have been for many many years. He’s not getting older he is definitely getting better. You have got to read fairytale it’s not his typical horror more of a fantasy and it’s excellent. Loved it!!!

Rwinnie5

Excellent Read. This man knows how to spin a yarn! One of his best books yet!

Mr. Sting

The Best got Better. I have been a constant reader and fan of Stephen King since the 1970’s. Somehow this story feels like it has broken ground that only belonged to J.R.R. Tolkien or George R.R. Martin. It is a complete work of fantasy that begs for a sequel or dare I hope, a trilogy? This is the best escape book I have read in decades. The best got better.

Leaveneo e

What a great story!. I loved this book. I didn’t want it to end and left the last two chapters untouched for days until I had to find out the end. I was not disappointed….well…mostly not disappointed….I wanted Charlie to go back and I wanted to hear those stories too.

Janiceaday

Wow!. Another masterpiece from Stephen King! An exciting adventure from beginning to end.

DeefromHouston

One of the Best!. Being a Constant Reader since Stephen first hit the scene, I’ve read most every novel. I had to stop recently because they became more political than entertaining. This story IS Stephen King at his best. Thank you for this lovely, magical read.

Big-bee-righ

All Hail the King!. Just when you think Stephen King might be past his prime, out comes Fairy Tail and dumps that theory in the trash. This book is yet another testament to Kings seemingly timeless ability as a story teller. He’s the best in the game, and this newest work solidifies that fact. I could not put down this book for even a minute, I’d be surprised if you can.

Metalvermin

He still has it!. This is proof that King has never slowed down. He has never written anything that wasn’t worth reading but this is truly amazing!

StephieP79

Stephen King at his finest self!!!. This book was fantastic. Oh it was so nice to read a nice long novel by the old Stephen King again. The only bad thing about it is that it had to end. I loved it.

Wolfhead9

Old Stephen at his Best. I loved the speed of this book; couldn’t put it down. The exaggeration of fairy tales was fun. Been a fan since the Stand. Ready for more!

Sdfrdeghfrjed

A grim fairy tale. The 17 year old was a bit too brave to be real seeing what he saw in the Other. Radar is one of the best characters in the story, need more of him. A lot of lessons to glean from this dark, twisted tale

323EL

Fairy Tale. Another great story from Stephen King, and a lovely long one ! This tale weaves many of our old tales together along with mythical creatures and medieval monarchy. Radar the German Shepard ties the novel together nicely. Once you get into the story, it is hard to stop reading.

123readtome

The Evolution of A King. Another brilliant, magical and beautifully woven story… from Carrie to the Institute and everything in between, Mr. King has somehow outdone himself yet again.

TFM42

Fairy Tale (no spoilers). This is an absolutely phenomenal book. Remember the fairy tales of your childhood? This book is a combination of those, told as only Stephen King could tell them. It is not the pretty versions Disney gives the world, it’s like the original versions. Combining our real world with “The Other”, you follow Charlie and Radar down the rabbit hole. Well worth the trip. Fairy Tale will be added to my list of reading again and again books. To Stephen King - thank you for another wonderful book. Since the start of my journey reading your works (Pet Sematary was my first, probably too young, but I didn’t care), your words have taken me on many adventures, given me laughs and nightmares, and set the bar high for me for what a good book needs to be. Thank you. Love, One of your Constant Readers

Chloe_7292

Best book I’ve ever read. A fantastic play on fairy tales that I couldn’t put down. Buy this book. Trust me.

GalyTP

Loved it. I loved this read! Took me back to my childhood and the “once upon a time” books I learned to read by

Reinfine

Remarkable just Remarkable! A storyteller like no other!. I couldn’t put this down and I never read fantasy or super natural books.

BBC_American

Fantastic Stephen King. I‘ve been a Stephen King fan since I was very young (starting with Night Shift). One recent book had too much Trump political snark, but this one goes back to the original Stephen King whose books I have loved for decades, and who got me through some dark days of childhood. I like the Stephen King who kindly talks to his Constant Readers…of which I am proudly one.

What house?

Starts off normal, then goes to a fairytale. Couldn’t put it down. Be prepared to stay up late reading it. I liked the characters. Finished 2 days ago, and keep thinking about it. What I noticed was the 17 year old was telling the story, but you could visualize an educated man behind it with words and thoughts too brainy for a teen. A great read.

Towerbound77

Fairy Tale. Excellent story. Hints of The Dark Tower here and there. A wonderful story.

SRVLVR

Loved It!. I couldn’t put it down and didn’t want the story to end! Another great read from one of my all time favorite authors!

Ssandbank

Fairy Tale. Absolutely loved this! One of my favorites by him. This book gave me Talisman and Dark Tower vibes, but it is definitely it’s own story. Characters are beautifully written and I could not put it down. 10/10 recommend!

Asapr212

A Tale Well Told By The Master. King did not disappoint in this book of fairy tale fantasy for adults. I especially liked the illustrations which helped show his mind’s eye’s view. I will read it again (and probably again) for the nuances I may have missed in the first read. Great book to read in front of a fireplace or on an airplane - dissolve into it!

Lantana75

Meh. Meh

Jeff Mastry

Disappointing. This book is interesting until the protagonist visits the other world with his dog the first time . It rapidly goes downhill from there.

Eye Full Tower

King went round on the sundial. This book has all the impact of the Stephen King classics from the mid seventies. It is inventive, engrossing, and as always, well written. There is no writer to compare with King.

User28601

Top 5 King novel. AGame from Mr King. One of his top 5 novels. Fans of Dark Tower will love this book.

KelleiM

Complete Different. I loved this book! I’m a Stephen King fan but this was completely different than any of his other books and I’m here for it. I hated that it had to end.

Engineer7422

Fairy Tale. A delightful revisit back to fantasy.

Susiebeatle

Fairy Tale. Very different than his other books. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you Mr. King From a Constant Reader

Sandee33421

MUST READ!. Love this book. Such a great read, I couldn’t put it down. Was so sad when I finished the book.

Mpc5150

Didn’t want Fairy Tale to end!. Stephen King still weaves his magic with his writing. I can’t wait until he has another book out! I will be empty until his next tale is in my hands!

Noochthepooch

Fantasy thriller. Loved this book extremely original. I couldn’t put it down, highly recommend.

2000 yard kill

Classic King. I thought it was great, almost old school King. Great read.

Adr713

A Real Kind of Hero. Charlie Reade makes this book excellent. We know we’re about to drop into fantasy worlds—we’ve seen this, we love it still. But our narrator isn’t the perfect protagonist, and the best part is that he knows it. He’s an honest kid who wants to do his best and feels the shame for the times he did his worst. In a world full of electrified skeletons, giants, mermaids, and de-aging, Charlie Reade makes an adventure of fiction feel like one of fact.

Tallminky

Awesome. Makes you want to keep reading, very good book!

Baby alien

Amazing. One of many books from Stephen King than I have been enraptured in forever
