Desert Star by Michael Connelly
Desert Star by Michael Connelly Book Summary
LAPD detective Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch team up to hunt the brutal killer who is Bosch’s “white whale”—a man responsible for the murder of an entire family.
A year has passed since LAPD detective Renée Ballard quit the force in the face of misogyny, demoralization, and endless red tape. But after the chief of police himself tells her she can write her own ticket within the department, Ballard takes back her badge, leaving “the Late Show” to rebuild and lead the cold case unit at the elite Robbery-Homicide Division.
For years, Harry Bosch has been working a case that haunts him—the murder of an entire family by a psychopath who still walks free. Ballard makes Bosch an offer: come volunteer as an investigator in her new Open-Unsolved Unit, and he can pursue his “white whale” with the resources of the LAPD behind him.
First priority for Ballard is to clear the unsolved rape and murder of a sixteen-year-old girl. The decades-old case is essential to the councilman who supported re-forming the unit, and who could shutter it again—the victim was his sister. When Ballard gets a “cold hit” connecting the killing to a similar crime, proving that a serial predator has been at work in the city for years, the political pressure has never been higher. To keep momentum going, she has to pull Bosch off his own investigation, the case that is the consummation of his lifelong mission.
The two must put aside old resentments and new tensions to run to ground not one but two dangerous killers who have operated with brash impunity. In what may be his most gripping and profoundly moving book yet, Michael Connelly shows once again why he has been dubbed “one of the greatest crime writers of all time” (Ryan Steck, Crimereads).

One of his best books. Great from beginning to the end
Desert Star. Michael Connelly, simply said, is a great author as this book shows.
I just wanted to let you. I just wanted to let you know that I have a job for you to
Bosch is slowing down. Characters are great as usual. The cold cases are interesting but a little slow. Liked Idaho panhandle references as I am a transplant from California. Indeed many retired police officers live here. Always a fan. Hope to read future Bosch books. Like to see more Lincoln lawyer also.
Classic Bosch and Connelly. One of his best books.
Somewhat disappointing.. Maybe Bosch is just getting older, but the stories have been getting more and more boring over the years. And yes, I started with Angel’s Flight.
A great book. Once again, he’s written a great book.
Desert Star. Loved it!
Terrible. This book was so hard to finish. Skimmed a lot in the end. Boring.
Connelly!. Not his best but certainly a great read. Almost impossible to put down once you start.
The story of a righteous man.. Well done.
Great book. I hope it’s not the end of Harry Bosch
Desert Star has little to do with the story. The book read like the author had a deadline to meet. The first 2 chapters ramble on, and the end was expected.
Another Great Story. I couldn't put it down! Love the stories, the characters, the "feel" of being there with Harry. He never disappoints.
Desert Star. Didn’t care for this one. Rene was annoying. Bosch was great.
Desert Star. Another great Harry Bosh story! Loved it!
The Sad One. A great book, an awesome book! I don’t want to think about not reading a Harry Bosch book again! I have read him since his first book (Connelly I mean), so please find a way to get one or with luck two more books out of him!
Good read but…. I enjoyed starting the new year with this quick and easy read. However towards the end, I became frustrated with the lack of development of certain storylines that I thought would play a larger role in the read. After considering that, it was not half bad.
A great read. A gripping story.. A great read. I wanted to slow down and savor the story, but it pulled me to the end. I wanted it to keep going.
Outstanding. You won’t guess what’s going to happen. You won’t guess how it’s going to end. And you won’t stop reading until you see it through.
Connelly never disappoints. While adding to Renee Ballard’s profile, Michael weaves the best of everything that is Bosch. By far his best ever, I am saddened to think Harry is coming to an end. All of his works grab you from the start and leave you breathless by the end. Thank you for the pleasure of reading another one of your masterpieces.
Desert Rose. Well done.
True Harry Bosch. He stays true to the character and the story is as good as any others. Sad he writes an exit plan for Harry but nothing last forever.
Wow- justice served. Absolutely fantastic police procedural. I really enjoyed this piece.
Another excellent read on Bosch and Ballard. Yet one more book I stayed wit for long reading sessions. Enjoyed it - the story, the writing, the considerations weighed in authoring it. Thank you!
Moving. If you love Bosch read this book
Another great Michael Connely read. It’s a really nice book but the author has let Bosch age and he is seventy years old now and weak. Some might say that makes him a more desirable character because of his weakness. But I miss the indestructible, Harry Bosch from the concrete blonde novel.
Fiction or nonfiction?. I really liked the Bosch series on television. So when I saw this book, I thought well this should be good. But I was confused. The author was writing about current events in this book. So he was mixing fiction with non-fiction. But of course, his non-fiction musings were from a political perspective. I don’t like reading fictional books that are virtue signaling which I felt this book did. It was a pretty good storyline other than that.
It’s ok. Not his best, but very engaging. The end seemed to arrive in a hurry and in a disorganized way.
Good. We’ll done story like earlier writings
Great read. Really great read.
Desert Star. Michael Connelly’s novels never disappoint. There were a few holes in this story, but overall a good read. I hope this is not the last Bosch book.
Did not disappoint. Semi sweet ending.
Awesome ending. Great but sad ending…
Yet another winner. Could not put this book down! Exciting, riveting and straight to the heart! Never leave us Harry Bosch.
Excellent; engaging and sometimes riveting. Another side of Bosch.. Really liked all the characters and the twists in the plot.
I’m hooked!. I’m 8 chapters in and can’t stop. I have to confess that I’m not an avid reader, but this book have me hooked on the story and I love it. What a way to star my reading habit to work again.
The first time in a. And you know I will go ahead with me I will be at
Desert Star. Sorry for this duo to end! Great series.
Desert star. Particularly like the storyline and the plot, although two running concurrently, they were easy to follow. The narrators were especially good. You have to wonder what can the author do next to top the last one
Took Awile. But once it got rolling… hold on tight!
Harry at his best. Great ride with Harry &Renee, kept me riveted till the end. No spoilers from me.
Desert Star. Not his best, but I always read them all.
Details. Always love Connelly and the little details that really develop the characters.
Worst Connelly book EVER. Don't waste you money on this mess of a book. Very poorly written, tedious reading of repetitive plots, implausible characters...I had to struggle to finish it. And spoiler alert, the end is depressing and grim. Harry Bosch is dying. I wish I'd never read this book. Michael Connelly needs to retire. Enough!
Masterful. One of Connelly’s best. As good as it gets.
Desert Star. Classic Bosch
Meh. Think this was my last Connelly book. It’s just not him anymore.
End of an Era. Good story as usual from Connelly but frankly not his best work. Most interesting is the winding down of the Harry Bosch saga. Have been following Bosch for 30 yrs and enjoyed it immensely. Seeing him aging and sick is sad yet satisfying. Everybody counts or nobody counts. That about says it. Hope to see Harry one more time for a proper goodbye.
Desert Star. Page turner and awesome book. Love the Renee Ballard series. I don’t like Bosch getting old. This may be best book yet! Highly recommend.

Sad. Another great one from Michael Connelly, sad because Harry is getting old…
Dessert Star. One of his best, I couldn’t put it done so unfortunately I was through it in no time. Excellent read.
Thin plot points.. Two cops acting far outside of common police procedures. Not very satisfying.
Well, written, great story. I really enjoyed the book. It had a nice arcing story with Harry and Renée. You can tell when a book is well written as the words just flow across the page and you don’t even know you are reading.

Bosch/Ballard team 👍. Another page turner from Mr. Connelly,
Desert Star. 4.5/5 stars. Great characters as usual. Unique plot that eventually comes together. I’d recommend it. Hal R
Bosch and Ballard, great team. A must read for Michael Connelly fans. One of my favorite of the Bosch series. Love the way Connelly has now fully developed Rene Ballard’s character into someone I want to read more about in the future. Maybe working with Mickey Haller? That would be interesting.
Last Shot. Thought I’d try one last Connelly read, but no, it too disappointed like the last one. He's creat two of the most unlikeable leads since Ahab in Bash and Bannock. Two cases, rushed resolutions, and a morbid ending that confirms Harry Bosch is a grade a —
Great read!. Well-plotted, characters always engrossing…sensing a denouement here, but a fine and gallant conclusion. Love Bosch and Ballard for who they are.
No Spoilers. This series of books, written by Michael Connelly, got me through forced bed rest and a dark time in my life. Harry Bosch is real to me and Renee Ballard is too, now. I don’t know what the future holds for the two of them but the stories have been incredible and I hope they continue for a long time. This book tied up some loose ends but left questions unanswered and more stories to tell. Looking forward to the next one.
Desert star. Some of his best writing
Desert Star. This was an enjoyable murder mystery with a few twists to keep the reader engaged. The characters are interesting and the stories mostly believable and realistic.
Why does it have to end. I have read all the Bosh books and the only thing wrong with Desert Star is it ends. From start to finish its a wonderful read. Hopefully, our Desert Star finds his way into many more books.
Thank You. Mr. Connolly sir. For the gift of Harry Bosch. Respectfully, Mike Cook Richland WA
Another stellar read!. Michael Connelly did it again! Great story with righteous cases, nice plot twists, a road trip, and justice being served. I sense a great follow up story…
Good book. Good book but sad ending! Seems to be the writer modus operandi!! Good books weak ending!
Great book.. As always, a very enjoyable read. Bosch and Ballard work to solve Open/unsolved homicides including Bosch ‘s “white whale.”
Desert Star. Wow! Another awesome book by an outstanding writer! I loved reading this story. I am surprised at Renee’s maturity and confidence, and how easily she manages her new staff. I’m always impressed with Harry. He is just awesome and irreplaceable.
Another great book. I have really enjoyed all the Harry Bosch novels and this was no exception. A unique organization-cold cases, books of lost souls. Two super cases.Harry is my favorite character, hope he is around awhile longer.
2/3 Great!. The first 1/3 of book had a tremendous amount of filler. The last 2/3 was classic Bosch and excellent. Not sure the Ballard character can survive a series without Harry Bosch on the scene!
Rarely do I. give a book 5 stars. But the crime solving duo of Bosch and Ballard is an exciting read. Like the first 2 in this series, no disappointment. Mr. Connelly knows how to write a great story, still fresh and fascinating after all these years.
Thank you. RIP Harry. Thank you, Michael.
Another excellent Bosch story. As usual, this Connolly book was a delight to read. A great and believable plot. Continually entertaining. Wish he would do more books each year.
Another great read. I read this book after a series of similarly themed books in this genre by other authors. It reminded me again how a brilliant author can engage the reader with sufficient detail to create tension, excitement, anticipation and entertainment without bogging down the pace of the story or losing the complexity of the characters. Connelly is the best there is at it.
The Best. I’ve read all the books in this series and found this one to be the best so far. I’m hoping there are a few left…🤔😉
Not the best in show. Love the Bosch books - and the prior Bosch Ballard pairings. This installment was disappointing with a plodding pace and no suspense.
Good, not great.. Interesting. Not his best, but worthwhile reading.
