The 6:20 Man

The 6:20 Man by David Baldacci Book Summary

A cryptic murder pulls a former soldier turned financial analyst deep into the corruption and menace that prowl beneath the opulent world of finance, in this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller from David Baldacci.

Every day without fail, Travis Devine puts on a cheap suit, grabs his faux-leather briefcase, and boards the 6:20 commuter train to Manhattan, where he works as an entry-level analyst at the city’s most prestigious investment firm. In the mornings, he gazes out the train window at the lavish homes of the uberwealthy, dreaming about joining their ranks. In the evenings, he listens to the fiscal news on his phone, already preparing for the next grueling day in the cutthroat realm of finance. Then one morning Devine’s tedious routine is shattered by an anonymous email: She is dead.

Sara Ewes, Devine’s coworker and former girlfriend, has been found hanging in a storage room of his office building—presumably a suicide, at least for now—prompting the NYPD to come calling on him. If that wasn’t enough, before the day is out, Devine receives another ominous visit, a confrontation that threatens to dredge up grim secrets from his past in the army unless he participates in a clandestine investigation into his firm. This treacherous role will take him from the impossibly glittering lives he once saw only through a train window, to the darkest corners of the country’s economic halls of power . . . where something rotten lurks. And apart from this high-stakes conspiracy, there’s a killer out there with their own agenda, and Devine is the bull’s-eye.

I really enjoyed this fast paced, keep your guessing book. Baldacci is a great writer that keeps you guessing with his plot twists. It was a good read.

Try and figure this one !

Packed with goodies. This was a wonderful and twisty ride ! Another super book from one of my favorite writers.

Enjoyed the story from start to finish

Well written. Absolutely kept my attention! Didn’t want to put it down! Just had to find out what happened next.

Full of information about the obscure working of the criminal minds. Action packed but not impossible

I’ve read a few David Baldacci books in the past, but this is the first in a few years. Great to see that he hasn’t lost his touch. The 6:20 Man is so full of twists and turns it keeps you in the edge of your seat. Really enjoyed it.

So sorry to say this was a terrible book. I have read everything he has written and I only finished it by thinking that it would surely get better. It didn’t. I found the main character to be contrived and there was nothing to make me care about him.

Dissappointed at the weak ending. I wanted to like it but the book was too slow-moving for me without building up much suspense. As I was reading it I felt like it was geared more towards males. Nothing wrong with that, it just had some cliches!

Must read!

Slow start, but good once it got going. I’ve been a long time Baldacci fan. It saddens me that he is so bent on disparaging, villainizing, stereotyping, and over dramatizing conservative people and their views. There are plenty of conservative people who don’t shove their views down the throats of people the way Baldacci is so intent on bashing everyone over the head with his opinions. And, there are plenty of conservative people who love all people. Also, a successful author of this caliber pontificating about the greed of wealthy people seems disingenuous. I always buy every Baldacci book as soon as it comes out. I would love to read one that doesn’t bash conservative people, and falsely assign radical ideologies to anyone less liberal than he is. It’s really not necessary to the story lines.

The story draws you in, and it keeps you anticipating and predicting the outcome. My first read of this author, and I will definitely try another to encourage my background knowledge of crime and intrigue!

Excellent fast read.

Great mystery/murder. Enjoyed it very much, especially since I tend to not read them. Great suspense, kept me guessing until the end.

A great mystery book which keeps you guessing until the very end. Well worth reading!

2/5 stars. Stupid, far fetched book! Hal R

Very entertaining, overall easy to understand

full of cliches and stereotypes

One of Baldacci’s best. Great read.

Trite formula writing.

Interesting story. A little boring at times, but I would read a follow up with the same characters.

I was expecting more from the plot lines but the ending was a disappointment …too neat and tidy.

This story absolutely sucked me in and I couldn’t put it down. Excellent story. If you’re reading this, buy it already. You can thank me later.

Good read kept my interest page to page.

Good at first but then became too formulaic. Weak ending

I was captured by this story. The characters, the guessing, the finality. It all fit so well together. Please let there be a sequel.

Great story!!

I’ve read most all of his books. Wasn’t as into this one as most of his other books. If this character pops back up, I’ll have to think about it before I purchase it. Typically I pre-order all his books.

So good I couldn’t put it down!

Baldacci has an amazing gift to keep you on the edge the entire time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book

I was really looking forward to reading this book. I really wasn’t very good. Maybe you will like it.

This book was so confusing and jumbled. Did not keep my attention.

An interesting new character in ex-Army Ranger Travis Devine, who I suspect we’ll see again in future Baldacci stories. The premise for the story was somewhat sound but the plot twists and ending were pretty ridiculous with a lot of loose ends. As is often the case with popular mass market authors, the more novels they produce the poorer the quality. The reader is left with the distinct impression the author was under a hard deadline to finish the book and had to “wrap it up” one way or another without respect to the story line really making much sense and without any believability. At least Devine is a new macho character we can cheer for and hope to see again.

Great new character

Excellent mystery thriller. One of his best!

I’ve always enjoyed Baldacci’s books but this was truly awful. Dialog terrible, unbelievable characters and plot components that go unresolved. When you get to the end of the book and they have to explain each step to identify the antagonist it feels totally contrived. I also hope this is a not a new character the author wants to build a series of books around.why did I read to the end if it was so awful. I have vowed to always finish reading what I start. After this I may need to reconsider.

Lacking the arousing literary style I’ve found in my other Baldacci reads. Hoping for a brief escape from insane “culture” perversions, I almost quit reading at the end when the plot “woke” and left me with the conclusion that this was my last Baldacci (maybe a ghost writer).

I couldn’t put the book down once I started to read it. I loved the main character and the story line. I’m sorry to say this was my first David Baldacci book. But after reading this one I’m sure I’ll read other ones by him.

The main character gets surprised and you will be too.

I hope to see more of Travis Devine. Great character!! Always super work from a great writer!

Too many twists and characters not really credible. I much prefer the Jack Reacher series.

Extremely jumbled

A little woke social agenda mixed with weak characters. While under duress they would say the dumbest cringeworthy things. I swear his earlier books were much better. The only positive is it’s unlikely you will figure out whodunnit until the very end.

You will not be disappointed, a step forward for Baldacci. I have read all his books and really thought this was one of his best.

Really enjoyed from beginning to end

New character. Nice read, well paced, and kept you guessing.

Very exciting read. I loved it.

Good read! It kept me guessing right up to the end.

Interesting plot. Interesting characters. Kept my attention. Surprise ending was ok. Gratuitous lesbians and transgender references that did not add to the story. Obligatory crazy Christians. Would have liked it better if it was shown that someone other than Travis was the Army killer. Also would have liked it better if Speers and Travis had gotten together at the end.

New protagonist. Typical Baldacci — great characters, convoluted plot, can’t stop reading it, even at 3 AM. And of course you thought you figured it out… but you didn’t.

Hope he writes more of Devine!

Outstanding book! Love Travis and hope to see him in future books!

I’ve been a huge David Baldacci fan since day one. I made it through the Atlee Pine/Mercy series. While I loved the Atlee character, I had hoped the story would wrap up before four books. With The 6:20 Man and Travis Devine, I was left wanting more of the character. The book was a fun, fast-paced read and I hope we are treated with more Devine books. Clearly, there is more to the character’s depth that readers want to read. There were plenty of twists and turns that forded you to not put the book down. If you are a Baldacci fan or even a happy reader, you will not be disappointed in reading this story.

Very good! But expected a better ending. With the storey, I expected to see a major international group of countries busted for money laundering, ect , ect, !

What can I say that hasn’t already been said? It’s a great book and he is a great author.

This is a real page turner and entertaining. The plot is convoluted and nonsensical, full of cliches and improbable outcomes. It was fun though.

Compelling story. Interesting characters well developed. I couldn’t figure this out till the end. Loved it! One of Baldacci’s best.

Another great book and I have read them all!

David never fail’s to write outstanding books! This book is no different, I only wish that he had kept the story going with another one. I am a huge fan of his and I think that I have read almost every book that he has written and also own everyone. Kudos to you David! Please keep writing!!!

Great story and writing
