Truly amazing. Probably one of the best books I’ve ever read

Unique and wonderful. The only book I’ve ever read that uses gaming as an allegory for life. A bittersweet, heartbreaking, yet hopeful story. One of my favorite books of the year.

OverHyped. The toxic life of Sadie Green (Spoiler Alert) To me personally this book was over hyped. At several points in the the book I was like are we really going there. I mean it was she had a checklist she had while she was writing it. Examples: Toxic relationships, homophobia, racism, sexism, gun violence, and much more. Honestly a lot of it just through the book of track. She could have used these topics properly, but it just the writer was just as toxic as her characters. Some examples throughout it was: +“She said that marriage was an antiquated institution that oppressed women. ” I saw this like three to four times throughout reading it. + “So, like, all you have to do is own your own company?” “Right. Then the men have to do what you want,” Sadie said. +“I’m the seventh Anna Lee in Equity.” +“There are a million Anna Lees in this town,” +“Even if there were “a million Anna Lees,” Then you even have an Instructor having a relationship with one of his students while being married to another women and child. Even after Sadie he was having relationships with many other students. + I also found it funny how Sadie called Kojima out for being sexist, but plays Leisure Suit Larry. Leisure suit Larry is far worst in the sexist department than Metal Gear Solid just Google it. “I don’t want to play a game that’s a collection of some guy’s fetishes,” Oh but you do Sadie. And that is just a little bit of toxicity throughout the book. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone. The main reason I even finished reading this book because of Sam. I knew he wasn’t going to get the girl at the end, but it was nice to see his character to the end. Also, she just throws a bunch of game titles throughout the book. I would say this is more from a programmer’s side of the gaming which I really did enjoy.

Don’t waste your time. Interesting concept- goes on and on for too long- gets too political, should’ve ended the book long before it actually ends.

Good read. Loved this book but the ending 🫤

Lackluster. This book seemed great, but ended up holding so little. Repetitive in its thoughts and slightly boring. I really wanted to like this book but I can’t. Video game talk was cool.

Meh. This felt like a saga to me - like, there’s no big rising action to a big payout in the end. It’s more little stories cobbled together over years and stays pretty flat. Maybe you’re into that sort of thing. It’s just not something I enjoy. Then, add to that, characters that aren’t really likeable and an oddly-rushed ending, and I was just glad it was over. I grew up in this time period and expected to love it because it was about video games, but I guess I was expecting something more like Ready Player One. Oh well.

Interesting read for a person who doesn’t game. Interesting deep dive into the world of gaming. Really enjoyed the development of the characters, their relationships and how they changed over time

Brilliant but not my style. The author is an incredible writer. I just wished I liked the characters better. I don’t read fiction that often but admire the authors grasp of the English language. I just read a gentleman in Moscow. Tough competition.

Genius. I loved this book. When I fell into it, I fell into it HARD. Gabrielle Zevin is a genius and a master of words and thoughts and ideas. This was brilliant, sharp, fun and hopeful. I know I will think of this book for a long time to come.

Incredible!. I’m not a gamer at all (I’m honestly pretty averse to video games) and still greatly enjoyed this. You can’t help but fall in love with the characters and root for them until the end.

Great start, but died off. This book was interesting to start but for majority of it, it felt like I was just reading a timeline of a gaming company. Nothing felt significant or made me want to continue reading. The battle between Sadie and Sam just became annoying and I lost my interest in the characters…

What Goes Unsaid. Gabrielle Zevin left no stone unturned, bandage in-place, or social trope in her inventory while delivering an electric novel. Books like this are as complete a dialogue about life and all of its pain, joy, and the mess in-between. Like a reflection in an indigo lake, her characters fascination with being gamers, mirrors why some of us are readers. Though we see events from many stages of life, it’s Zevin’s exploration of the uncertainty and anxiety of youth that serves as a driving theme in the story. Specifically, the almost violent point where the idealized perceptions of youth meet the compromising reality and judgements of the world. On a deeper level we see how the singular passion of youth occasionally manifests as creative genius. For many there is a treasure chest of topics to enjoy in the video gaming world she builds for us. Including the highs, lows, and intricacies of the gamer’s experience. I am particularly enthralled by Zevin’s leveraging video games as a larger representation of every fascinating and depressing thing about the real world. We are challenged to weigh the pros and cons between the two “realities” and how we face life in each. Zevin’s voice and characterizations are refreshing and hard to shake. Her style crafts the kind of story that puts the joy in reading. It’s the book you wish could write and our glad to have read. Her masterful use of the omnipotent perspective gives us characters with real depth and dynamic qualities. The themes blend perfectly together pulling us from one revelation to another. As Zevin clearly states this book is a love song in many respects. A love song to artists and makers as well as the creative process. For me it was a reminder that life is for living, here and now. That if we are present and fully engaged we will see the magnificence of being and, when the end comes, exude the gratefulness that it happened at all.

Simply Amazing and …. And perhaps “the” love story for the Oregon Trail generation!

A must read. Favorite book of 2022!!!!

Stunning. (Trigger warning). Stunning storytelling. Fell hard for the characters who are exquisitely drawn. Was completely thrown by the devastating turn and had to put it down for weeks…perhaps there was a trigger warning I hadn’t seen. Regardless, the book is beautiful, and top of my list of recommendations.

The ending?. Anticlimactic. The relationship between Sadie and Sam was strange and hard to grasp. It felt like a very slow read.

Boring, unless you are into video games. Moved too slow. I skipped chapters to move it along. I wouldn’t have continued if it was not for my book club. Maybe for people in their 20s & 30s I am in my 60s and found it impossibly boring

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Like so many other readers, I grew up a gamer … and I still found this book incredibly boring! Seriously, this was an absolutely agonizing book to read. If my book club didn’t pick it, I would have quit it early on. So very disappointing.

Underwhelming. Everyone in book club has raved about this book. I was excited to crack it open and it reads okay but I’m not invested. I kinda like the characters but I just don’t care about them or this game they’re creating. For some reason the relationships between the characters are off putting, and I can’t figure out if that was a purposeful choice. I am extremely disturbed by Dov and Sadie’s relationship its evolution seems twisted and borderline gross. And I’m frustrated with our helpless protagonist, who seems put upon, life just happens to him and it’s like he doesn’t have the will or desire to make it better. And just when I start to feel compassion for him, he becomes the villain for another character. And as the book progresses I really don’t like Sadie! How can she be friends with Dov, a completely toxic character, and hate Sam? And then Sadie and Marx inevitably become a thing which forces Sam to reinvent himself as Mazur, all these characters are just weird, but are self aware of their issues and quirks, unfortunately that doesn’t redeem them for me. One positive thing I could say about the book is it has lots of great vocabulary, and I appreciate the features of the literary canon. There is also this existential conversation around life just being a game being played by greater maybe just larger being. That our world and lives are being manipulated by gamers. All in all, I was underwhelmed.

What could have been….. So…there were moments of greatness and here but weighed down by filler inconsequential information! Love the theme of love and friendship and various forms it can morph into. But he excess and heavily gamer jargon was a wet blanket to a great story of lasting friendship.

An Exploration of Relationships. In this absorbing story of young friends, readers will recognize variations of classic relationship experiences. A thoughtful, brave, and very relatable exploration of close friendship, T,T, and T shows, rather than tells, some of the limits of close friendship, most of which are self-imposed. We have many lessons to learn when we are young, and part of that is understanding how we get so many things wrong within the infinite space of an intimate relationship. Wouldn’t it be great if we could just restart, play the game over again, and this time correct our mistakes? We can’t, and we will never know how those very mistakes were the origin of, or responsible for, our many successes.

Cool book. Really cool book you should write more about this book characters really cool easy to flow with the storyline.

What If?. The story was well-conceived, and shared with the reader many of the dimensions of the gaming, and the creative, experience. It did so honestly, and paralleled Fikry’s style of rich and complicated people intersecting and drifting apart. It was easy to locate oneself in the text. Those intersections where richly-imagined characters met were the primary focus of the writing, and threw sparks while they invited the sharing of paths. The novel blurred the boundaries between the lived and the imagined, and preferred neither. This was a tale worth telling.

Move this to the top of your reading list.. This is an incredible and moving story, prepare yourself to fall in love with these characters and to have them break your heart. I’m in no way a gamer, so don’t let that deter you from losing yourself in this story

I’m actually blown away.. I finished this book in 3 days. I don’t think i’ve been this engaged with a book since I was young - I couldn’t recommend anything more.

This book drives me crazy. To start, this is by far one of the best books I have ever read. Being a gamer myself, I enjoyed how the author pulled many aspects of gaming to include great triumphs, loss, and even death but yet somehow was able to twist it into the lessons that intertwine the reality we live in today. 10/10

Trite twee mush. Limp sit-com. Self-conscious and shallow. Straining to be emotional. Meh

Bored. A struggle to get through.

Fell flat. Started great then fell very flat and boring half way through. The characters never resolved their issues with one another. Felt like the author decided to make political statements in the middle of the novel.

Not worth reading!!!. This story had huge potential. Some of the feelings Sam had about Sadie were very well described but unfortunately didn’t really go anywhere. The plot took an odd turn halfway through (became difficult to follow and hard to enjoy). The story went on way longer than it had to. Really a disappointing read!

I’m not a gamer but now I wish I was. Wow! I’m overwhelmed with the creative storytelling and intimate character development. This touched on so much of the late 90s when I was a single mom and trying to keep all the balls in the air.

Beautifully Written, Poetic, and Wonderful. From the world building of the video games to the complex and ultimately devastatingly real and beautiful relationships to the characters, this will stay with you. If you buy something, buy this book.

Not good, not bad. I felt some of the relationships in the book were contrived and there was much character development as would be expected. I didn’t laugh, I didn’t cry. I felt tired and hopeful. By the last 20 pages, I wanted it to end. When it did end, I was a little disappointed with the ending.

Surprisingly touching.. I can’t find words to describe how this book made me feel, but I’ll try. The writing is absolutely lovely. Poetic and haunting. The imperfectly flawed characters felt like friends. I will genuinely miss reading about them. I highlighted so many lines that spoke directly to me. I never would have thought a book about gaming could move me as much as this one did. I loved it.

Very slow plot. Couldn’t finish.. While it is a short read, I could not find the hook in the story. I can understand why some people may enjoy it but it reads like a biography and is not for me.

Very special book. The author has a very special way of writing - similar to John Irving or Robin Sloan - pulls you in and you just can’t put it down - unique characters that you just have to find out what happens to them - amazing!

Unexpectedly a new favorite. “What is a game? It’s tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow. It’s the possibility of infinite rebirth, infinite redemption. The idea that if you keep playing, you can win. No loss is permanent, because nothing is permanent, ever.” While reading a good bulk of this book, I thought I would end up giving it 4 stars. It’s been different to what I’m used to. The story is there, but I thought it could be slow at times, sometimes a little over descriptive. I started this book a week ago. Tonight, about 60% through, I could not put it down, and I would read in to the early hours. I used to have an old habit of needing to finish a book as soon as I picked it up, and I’ve only done that maybe once or twice this year. I had to keep reading this book. It was all necessary to take the story where it needed to go. NPC broke me in such a beautiful, heartbreaking way. And I couldn’t leave it there, so I stayed up to 2AM to finish this incredible book. The last page bringing tears to my eyes. Bittersweet tears. This is quite possibly now one of my favorite books. “Why wouldn’t you tell someone you loved them? Once you loved someone, you repeated it until they were tired of hearing it. You said it until it ceased to have meaning. Why not? Of course, you goddamn did.”

Unique which is refreshing.. I read a lot, and enjoyed the originality and unpredictable aspect of this story. Fabulous character development. I found myself continually routing for each and every character.

Engaging. Kept me reading!. I really loved this book. The characters were authentic and easy to care about. The storyline flowed well and kept me interested throughout. I’m not a gamer but still loved every aspect of this novel.

New story line. Great story Especially if you like video games

Don’t have to know about gaming but. You don’t have to know about computers or gaming, but it’s a lot of the book. The characters build their lives around gaming as their careers, so if that’s annoying then don’t read it. It didn’t bother me that much. I didn’t like the characters very much though. Solid 3 stars. No more and no less.

Perfect for readers who love gaming. I enjoyed the story between the characters but I’m not much of a gamer and I feel like if I was, I would’ve enjoyed it way more. I found myself skimming through certain chapters but at the same time I was invested in the story line. Over all good read!

If you grew up a gamer…. This is the perfect book for the gamer who finds themselves at the beach. Listen to the waves, let the nostalgia of a classic video game wash over you while the story of a lifelong friendship unfolds. There was good character development early on, and I enjoy the story the author was trying to tell. There is a side of me which feels that the story is somewhat incomplete and there are chapters which are glossed over, but then again, maybe its by design. How often have you filled in the backstory for a video game character in the absence of the full story being given to you?

Perfect. I read this in days. Absolutely delightful vocabulary, sentimental and real characters, and nerdy references and concepts.
