Behold an unforgettable intergalactic love story, rescued from the mists of time and brought to you by the visionaries behind Mythic Quest, the world-changing video game at the heart of the Apple TV+ Original Series.

What connects tantalizing yet tender alien romance with the biggest multiplayer video game of all time? Seasoned storyteller C.W. Longbottom, the Nebula Award-winning science-fiction and fantasy author and head writer of Mythic Quest. C.W. found literary fame with Inside the Caves of Beneroth and Tears of the Anaren, but even his most loyal fans don’t know that Tears of the Anaren began as a short story he wrote in the early 1970s while interning at Amazing Tales magazine.

This never-before-published draft is now yours to discover, complete with C.W.’s (extremely) colorful commentary and an Introduction and Afterword by Ian Grimm, the iconoclastic creator of Mythic Quest. As sparks fly between heroic scoundrel Zeb and space seductress Merrith, we get a glimpse into the mind of a talented young man yearning for greatness. Like early Mozart, it is raw and green — but also magic.

From Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney, the Apple TV+ original comedy series, Mythic Quest, goes behind the scenes to follow the game’s creators. In a workplace focused on building worlds, molding heroes, and creating legends, the most hard-fought battles don’t occur in the game — they happen in the office. Rob McElhenney stars as Ian Grimm alongside Charlotte Nicdao and F. Murray Abraham.

Magnificent. Hilarious addition to a wonderful show! LOVED MQ!

Jqualman

Space Fondue. It has so much delicious backstory, this one.

PickyAboutBooksIRead-Normally

Hackneyed humor. I most enjoyed the author’s self-congratulatory commentary at various points, but here and there the story was laughably bad, especially at the end, so it was worth reading. But no, I’d never read a novel this bad, and I can see why Isaac Asimov felt the need to completely re-write this teenage-style fantasy/trash.

Kwsunshine24

Hilarious. So fun to get a glimpse into the tragedy of CW’s writing! Almost as bad as I assumed it would be. 😂

Supermax2021

Need the Revised Version. We need to have the full released version of the book!

Dyanddtrees

Mystery Science Theater 3000 in book form. So bad, it’s funny. You have to read it in CW’s voice to grasp the attempted gravitas. Brilliant piece to go along with Mythic Quest Season 2.

Vidhi P

Funny. Great accompaniment to the show

Bernsteinr

Pretty similar to the 50s and 60s pulp novels I used to read. This is right out of a pulp novel from the late 50s-60s, sci fi paperback stuff, like pohl, Anderson, farmer, de camp. And def the stainless steel rat!

Stemow

Atrocious. Problematic. A minefield of horrible thoughts and ideas. A great example of how and what NOT to write. Five stars.

Galacticworm

Fascinating literature. Really enjoy reading the creativity produced by your extraordinary mind….

KirkMcPike

Even Asimov couldn’t have written it better..... Or could he have?

Like Peering At A Tree Through A Time Window And Seeing A Sapling. Tears of the Anaren was something I read growing up because it was popular, and I was dying to see what the hype was about. I liked it well enough, but I’ve always found myself drawn to Mr. Longbottom’s less appreciated works. It seemed like he really found his own style after his initial success with tears, but any fan could see the real roots of that style in this early draft here. It really shows what someone can make when they’re not worried about trying to appeal to a broad audience and just write what comes naturally.

Man, this is problematic. And pretty based

Johnathano619

An enjoyable, funny read.. Nice compliment to an already great show.

We all knew this is bad. But I truly didn’t expect this is such bad until I read it. You really owe Peter and Goldsmith some big apology for letting them reading this CW, and this is the first time I agree with Ian, I can’t believe we have the same taste, before this I am always the most loyal Poppy fan.

Mcbrownie220

For what it aims to do…. For what it aims to do… it is a great short story… not really safe for kids but fun… especially if you enjoy the series Mythic Quest.

Really well written. Wow. Well done!

John_in_Calgary

Goofy and yet still raw fun. There is something special in having the fictional story about a fictional creator generating that fictional work to enjoy. The Castle series did it with their many castle books… I am sure there are others but I can’t think of any as I type here. Knowing that the actor who plays the character can know just what the final work of their character is must help, just as having this work will no doubt reflex in the writers room will impact moving forward. If you don’t know the characters from the show then this becomes a short almost self-parody of 60-70’s space fantasy writing (of which I have read many that don’t work as well as this) but then we have two additional voices layered in. The aged author looking back and his boss. Each adding counterpoints or observations that (while fictional too) feel genuine to those characters. I would read more of this style of approach from this creative team.

Meh. A weak story, and rushed conclusion made this pretty unsatisfying.

KINGKIDDO

A fun, silly read. The book is obviously purposefully bad at times, because that is CW’s character. A fun little read and additional “backstory” to CW!

Agrajagdent

Disappointing ending. Would have been better if he died at the end and was somehow narrating from beyond. Either that, or waking to find it was all a dream.
