New York Times Bestseller

The new must-read epic from master storyteller Ken Follett: more than a thriller, it’s an action-packed, globe-spanning drama set in the present day.

“A compelling story, and only too realistic.” —Lawrence H. Summers, former U.S. Treasury Secretary

“Every catastrophe begins with a little problem that doesn’t get fixed.” So says Pauline Green, president of the United States, in Follett’s nerve-racking drama of international tension.

A shrinking oasis in the Sahara Desert; a stolen US Army drone; an uninhabited Japanese island; and one country’s secret stash of deadly chemical poisons: all these play roles in a relentlessly escalating crisis.

Struggling to prevent the outbreak of world war are a young woman intelligence officer; a spy working undercover with jihadists; a brilliant Chinese spymaster; and Pauline herself, beleaguered by a populist rival for the next president election.

Never is an extraordinary novel, full of heroines and villains, false prophets and elite warriors, jaded politicians and opportunistic revolutionaries. It brims with cautionary wisdom for our times, and delivers a visceral, heart-pounding read that transports readers to the brink of the unimaginable.

Excellent book, easy read depressing because of the real possibility. Everyone should read this book. It may help people understand the possibility of what faces us in the near future.

Propertylover

Everyone should read this. This book is unfortunately not far fetched. All it takes is one unhinged leader in one country to set off war. And then a series of responses by the rest of the world, all with their reasons, all with their ideals, thinking they are doing the right thing, causes the destruction of us all. Great read. But too easy to imagine to let me sleep at night.

Never. Death by “a dozen” enormous cuts.

Jenesaisquoi1

Way too over played. This was a long tedious journey with no tension leading to an inevitable conclusion. Characters were all unsympathetic and stereotypic. Follett has written some great books, unfortunately this isn’t one of them. I always read books to the end, this was one of the few I almost didn’t.

Error lover

I expected better. While it is a page turner, Never runs a course of decision making and unfinished business that never fully connects the reader to the characters. Flaws are the stuff of reality but no one can truly believe the narratives that could have been far more effectively crafted. Two spies marrying while nuclear weapons are in the air? Sorry I don’t buy it

Jmdamato

Never. Ken Follett has painted several characters in a fairly cartoonish manner making many of their actions and decisions illogical. Follett demonstrates an unexpectedly shallow understanding of American ideals, morality and politics. Because of its modern day setting and what we know of global politics and international relations, the story stretches our credulity to the breaking point. Despite this, there are some exciting segments of the novel, mostly those occurring on the North African continent, that will be informative and memorable for many readers.

Talented messenger… too much agenda. Ken Follet is definitely in the running for the Joesph Goebbels Memorial post as propaganda minister for the extreme left. For whatever reason, he has abandoned his story telling talent so he be a pitch man for his progressive message. Sadly…some dont realize, the progressive agenda is socialism. Hitler claimed he was a socialist as well.

ChiliSoul

OK. It starts out like his more recent long character studies with large plot details, and then the last third is one of his usual spy novels. It doesn’t really work. Not bad, just not his best.

DGrff412

Terrific! Many characters to follow (and care about), but done SO well.. LOVED it.

Raul Juan

WOW … I could not put it down.. A most extraordinary and riveting novel, published in 2021 presaging 2023 events. It is also forewarns geopolitical political crisis fueled by human distrust. Five stars.

NoBrainerToMe

Never. Follett did not fail as an impressive author in this book but his attempt to propose an apoplectic scenario did fail. The idea of North Korea being attacked from within and being the impetus for the beginning of a nuclear holocaust did not work. No mention of Europe’s or the Russian’s impact on such a scenario was a failure. I still look forward to reading another of his books!

Azherrfun

Never. A little slow starting out but then the paced quickened. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that this novel could someday become reality. So sad that would be.

Zoesampoochie

Never. I have always loved his books. Well written. But just a horrid subject. All the more reason for less women in government.

Follett lover

Never. So well written and researched. A class act book from a class act author. Definitely a cut above the rest by far.

Exiled Texan

Never. Ken Fillet’s best book in many years. A passionate warning about how the kind of events that produced World War One could repeat to produce an even worse world catastrophe.

Rbmurphy66

“Never” indeed…. Needs an editor. And drop the progressive slant. Speaking of never, never shall I read another Follett book.

Mike Walnut Creek

Could not put it down. The book starts slow, but halfway through you can’t put it down.

Tony w. W. W.

Excellent Book - TWW. Interesting start to finish!

Harveystl

Beginning of the End. Scarily good and horrifically possible.

R2-412

Excellent. Wow! I mean Wow! That was an excellent read and damned if that isn’t the stuff of our nightmares. Highly recommend anyone with an interest in geopolitics read this book.

FritzBoMoe

Depressing. Don’t read if you’re looking for a storybook ending.

Pw!642

OMG. Once you start reading Never, put every other activity aside, perhaps except for sleep, but that will not come easily. It will take my pulse rate a couple of days to return to normal!

Clrt51

Disappointed. I looked forward to Ken Follet’s new book. I was quickly disappointed. It had too many characters and seemed to go on endlessly . I stopped reading it half way through. I hope he goes back to writing books like World Without End.

TrishKCEO

Impeccable Research and Gritty story.. Very good read felt a little rushed at the end. Follet’s research is always top notch and pacing keeps every page rolling to the next.

Fireball1966

Good read. Well written …plot was no surprise, but was well executed ,got my attention!

Judi 65

Very upsetting read2468. Never is an interesting read , but the ending was dreadful!

Nepolitano

Never. Probably the worst of all Follett’s books. And I’ve read them all. Great disappointment.

Lone star Roese

Boy even close to his normal writing.. Just not very good writing.

Carocross

Not recommended. There’s enough apocalypse in real world. I don’t want it in my fiction reading, too. First Follett book to disappoint me. Perhaps too realistic. I want happy ending in my fiction.

Barb,Jim

Don’t waste your time reading this book. I didn’t care for this book. I had to force myself to finish it. I liked every Ken Follett book but this one.

Jbmhowell

Never maybe!. I hated every moment of this book. Everyone should read it immediately.

Ala Mode76

The Ending Was Rushed. Was very surprised that the book ended so abruptly and disappointedly. Maybe this is why it was so cheap to buy?

Glenview reader

Not his best. Plot was all over the place and somewhat trite in places - a disappointment.

TheGreatMangini

Can I get a refund?. I am about halfway through the book and just not looking forward to finishing it. Minimal research and insights. Follett should stick to historical fiction, those are the books I can’t stop reading. Not even sure he actually wrote this one. Suspect an understudy did most of the work.

Wet again

Never Ken Follett. An amazing read that centers on a crisis involving north and South Korea. North Korea bombs South Korea with a nuclear bomb. America bombs North Korea military bases with nuclear bombs. World War III has now started and civilization as we know it has ceased to exist. A very emotionally involved read and very believable. My highest recommendation!!

Oburg61

Wow. Holy Smoak.

CCK1825

Never. Very real understanding about the way current political events can collide with tribal thinking to create catastrophic outcomes. I like that it rattles one’s thinking and pushes you through doors you’d rather pretend didn’t exist. Gives no pat ending because there isn’t one. It’s in the hands of many people in many places most of whom are not in positions of power because of their light handed approach to problem solving or scientific understanding. Usually we humans look for the wrong characteristics in our leaders and it shows in our political situations.

Ephemera Danica

Collett never disappoints. A slow start but builds momentum around a terrifyingly possible situation leading to nuclear war.

Ilovethis book

Terrific & terrifying book. Couldn’t put it down. Hopefully Our World Leaders will take pause!!!!. See headline.

Marcnatx

Exciting but Disjointed. The book seemed to be two or three completely separate narratives in one. While it offered an exciting collection of plots and subplots, they never get tied together leaving the reader to feel the stories lacked cohesion or a common purpose.

Leveragelar

Excellent.. Typical Follett…well developed characters, an intense story, a gut wrenching ending.

Joy's Jots

Never. Disappointing and predictable. Not a book I would recommend.

Lepard86

Chill of nuclear winter. The book provided a depth of thought that I haven’t experienced since growing up understanding what nuclear winter meant. The various storylines and characters never seemed to quite connect, perhaps thats for future volumes.

Ladevineii

Thumbs down. Terrible book. Didn’t like it at all.

Wiseton montgomery

Never. Not worth reading. So absurd ! So unrealistic!

ErinEli28

Should be required reading…. This should be taught in schools and for all world leaders. Ken Follett is a master of his craft and this is an incredible outline of how things spiral.

Bob4261

Not great for Follett. His books are usually 5 star, but this one was just ok to me. I’m sure he did his research but the White House and Chinese characters just didn’t seem real. The other story lines were much more interesting but they were really secondary in the book.

ALOFMAH

Lazy. Really lazy ending to a very complex book…. Too much packed into last 100 pages - where the first 100s were deliberate

RiccoV

Startlingly provocative.. This could happen. That makes it more real and more frightening than any ghost stories.

Zweenaman

So disappointed. I doubt that KF is writing anymore. This isn’t close to his earlier works. Sad really.

Page Turner. Could barely put this book done. Never is surreal since our current world affairs are in a similar mess with China and Russia.

JoaquindaPark

Nuclear war. A grim reminder of what could be, and how complex situations can get. Well done by Follett. Interesting to note that. China has 300 nukes to America’s 3,000. A possible change of plot: since the nukes fired by the US hit North Korea and not China, the Chinese retaliation could have been to target a US ally rather than Honolulu. Like Canada. Wake up Justin.

Hofstater12333333

Very disturbing. Mostly a great and captivating story. The ending was too disturbing to enjoy - I really wanted a happy ending…but no. I hope I don’t suffer nightmares!

Karen the epic nubblet

When is the next book. Good read…

Norma&Zoey

Great reading. In sync with our times

Never. Well written but didn’t really end

EshDC

Terrible. Not only are the characters all tropes and one dimensional, everyone is so incredibly naive. I honestly do not know why I read the whole book. Please, do not waste your time. Follet’s earlier books were great, but his most recent offerings have been formulaic with poorly developed characters.

Azherrfun

Never. A little slow starting out but then the paced quickened. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that this novel could someday become reality. So sad that would be.

BpBonnie

Never. So plausible it’s chilling. Of course our county would never have an issue of transitioning from one presidential administration to another. Of course we’d never again use nuclear weapons…

Foinwefof;jkn

NEVER. Ponderous - gripping for the first 500 or so pages, but Ken....wrap it up already.

MarkWhiteLotus

Super boring. Never got going. Way too much about the characters. Dropped it after 250 pages. Who calls a dress a party frock in 2021?

Rich&Big

Wow. What a great book. Hopefully the world learns from it.

Over cooked roast beef. Seriously Ken this book is like my Mother’s Christmas roast. Not real good.

Bahenry99

Scary….. We must hope that this never really happens……a stratifying and very scary view of an out of control world.

YVR-ORD

Never. Starts slowly; a bit fragmented but 2nd half picks up
