#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER John Grisham takes you to a different kind of court in his first basketball novel. Samuel “Sooley” Sooleymon is a raw, young talent with big hoop dreams—and even bigger challenges off the court.

“Hard to put down ... the pages turn quickly ... building to a climax that won’t leave readers doubting whether this is a John Grisham novel.” —Associated Press

In the summer of his seventeenth year, Samuel Sooleymon gets the chance of a lifetime: a trip to the United States with his South Sudanese teammates to play in a showcase basketball tournament. He has never been away from home, nor has he ever been on an airplane. The opportunity to be scouted by dozens of college coaches is a dream come true.

Samuel is an amazing athlete, with speed, quickness, and an astonishing vertical leap. The rest of his game, though, needs work, and the American coaches are less than impressed.

During the tournament, Samuel receives devastating news from home: A civil war is raging across South Sudan, and rebel troops have ransacked his village. His father is dead, his sister is missing, and his mother and two younger brothers are in a refugee camp.

Samuel desperately wants to go home, but it’s just not possible. Partly out of sympathy, the coach of North Carolina Central offers him a scholarship. Samuel moves to Durham, enrolls in classes, joins the team, and prepares to sit out his freshman season. There is plenty of more mature talent and he isn’t immediately needed.

But Samuel has something no other player has: a fierce determination to succeed so he can bring his family to America. He works tirelessly on his game, shooting baskets every morning at dawn by himself in the gym, and soon he’s dominating everyone in practice. With the Central team losing and suffering injury after injury, Sooley, as he is nicknamed, is called off the bench. And the legend begins.

But how far can Sooley take his team? And will success allow him to save his family?

Gripping and moving, Sooley showcases John Grisham’s unparalleled storytelling powers in a whole new light. This is Grisham at the top of his game.

Sooley. What a ride ! A great story. Love the departure from the normal legal story lines. A really great read.

Retlam1

Sooley. This story is mesmerizing and agonizing all at once. The angst I felt over the plight of Sooley’s family and his goal in helping them, and at the same time trying to navigate a new life in America kept me at the edge of my seat. I am not a sports fan and do not follow any favorite teams, and yet Mr. Grisham introduced me into the seductive world of professional basketball. I could not put the book down until it was finished. Thank you, Mr. Grisham for writing an incredible and unforgettable story. I hope aspiring athletes and agents can glean lessons learned from “having too much fun”.

Must read. Definetly was hooked after the first sentence. I’m glad too see love being shown to HBCUS for a change.

Gillybocargo

Awesome. Good read and touching story.

AT98!

5 stars!. Absolute page turner! Sooley! Sooley!

Ptvogelzang

Amazing. Love this story.

Maavan

Different. Pretty long story that turned a bit boring (not typical for Grisham) with an unexpected ending...

MontanaSue

A special story. I really fell in love with Sooley and his story. Very well written and an enjoyable read for all those who no matter your interest will be completely satisfied. Thanks for sharing ... Was a delight!

Andyshcn

Awesome!. Sooley was one of the best books that I have ever read. Although it wasn’t one of Grisham’s legal thrillers, this basketball story was heartwarming! The journey of Sooley from being a freshman to a basketball star was definitely surprising. And the descriptive words. Grisham always writes great books. And this is not an exception. Though a lot of people said that the ending was disappointing, it wasn’t because of the words, it was just because of the events that happened during the story end. The ending was a huge twist. Everybody predicted that Sooley would become a huge star with so many procedures done. It was actually disappointing for me too that Sooley died at the end. Plus, Sooley would’ve become a great basketball player. Overall, it was such a good read. BTW, sorry for letting you read a review this long. But I really do recommend John Grisham’s books and certainly this one. 🤩 Amazing!

MilaJason

His worst book yet. Very boring. I understand he no longer writes his own books. I hear he hires people to write for him. It shows. Start writing your own books again. They are great when you write them.

BkWrm777

Best book I have read in a long time!. A bit of a change from what many readers of John Grisham expect. However, one of the best books I have ever read. I was vaulted so close to the court, I could feel the sweat flying and the vibrations of feet thundering on the wooden floors. Heart warming, Heart Breaking and an intro into a world I would love to rescue. Read this book! You’ll find it impossible to stay away from.

Sooley. The book was heartwarming and I loved it. I have high recommendations for this book. Consider buying it. Even though it was a little hard because there were a lot of terms related to basketball that a lot of John Grisham and not basketball fans wouldn’t understand, it only made the read even more memorable and fun. The storyline of how Sooley became a national hero was amazing. I can’t believe the tragic ending. I can’t believe the amazing hero died because of a quite mischievous girl who gave him pills. So sad. Sooley probably didn’t have knowledge of any drugs anyway, but like, it just fits the story plot even better. Whatever. Great read overall. High recommendations. Just buy it already.

HHEutsler

Awesome!!!. I could not put this book down. Stayed up the past two nights reading long into the night. If I didn’t need to work I would’ve continued to read all night. Wow. Great and tragic.

DennyX!!

Sooley. What a piece of crap. Could have been written better by a Sports Illustrated intern with access to news reports from South Sudan. Wasted $15 DennyX!!

Scrappydooesq

Don’t Make Plans. You won’t be able to put it down…

Say-Say Jane

Sooley. What a piece of garbage. Someone should have warned his readers about this. I will never ever buy another Grisham book, and I’ve bought quite a few. Written like a high school essay, poorly constructed and a total waste of time. I want my money back.

Zsa Zsa 1

I loved it!. Totally engaging. Not even a basketball fan, but I enjoyed this book quite a bit.

JUST ME 22222

Sooley dies of drug OD. The End Stupid book Maybe the last JG book I lol ever read.

Pinevillerd1

Grisham does it again. Always good and quick reads. I have polished my shooting skills.

Losing the inches.

Sooley. As a sports lover, I was enthusiastic about the book and loved the way it ended.

Nanniebo

Sooley. Even without being a basketball fan, reading about the character, Sooley, who came from nothing to the big “American dream” was extremely engaging. I fully recommend this read. Thanks

Beverlyw1971

Legendary. Loved this story. As much as I love John Grisham’s legal thrillers, this book is one of my favorites.

Mcddby

Spell binding. I could not put the book down.

Meford

Our friendships and the Journey they take us on.. The story keeps you interested from beginning to end. It’s about luck and the relationships we build along the way.

TRINSL13

Sooley’s Adventure. I’ve been hooked on John Grisham novels for a very long time. When I came across his Sooley novel, I read it nonstop. I was so impressed to see that Seth Curry ( go Warriors) was included in the book because I live where the Warriors team lives. I was heartbroken upon reading that Sooley died; I wish the book would have gone on forever and Sooley would have continued into the spotlight of living out his dreams. One of my favorite books.

Lynn Lincoln

Very entertaining. A great story. I couldn’t put it down.

Beach Banker

A MISS. I think that I have read every one of Grisham’s books. The story line is impossible to believe. His worst.

H8 arachnids

Sooley. Didn’t need all of the basketball jargon. Sooley’s ending was abrupt Like the author was tired of writing. I’m usually a fan.

Eag 9 08

Enjoyed. Good Read, Big Screen worthy.

Mom Trise

Sooly. We had the privilege.of knowing about a dozen Lost Boys of Sudan when they arrived in the States in about 2010. With this reading, their stories of how their villages were burned to the ground and their subsequent lives in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya come to life. It continues to break my heart how much needless suffering there is in our world. This book and its comparison of the lives of Sooly vs his family left in the camp is accurate and heart wrenching still.

44444444455555555!

Not impressed. The worst Grisham book I have read….and I have read them all.

Dallas Teacher

“Sooley, Sooley, Sooley!” This book was impossible to put down.. You get to know the characters as if they were your friends. Your family. You cheer when they cheer and you grieve when they hurt. One of the best books I’ve ever read. I believe you will say the same!

JulB62

Great read!. Excellent storytelling. Great story about a young man and his connection to basketball, friendship and family. Great character development. Good pace of action, and gut retching violence is South Sudan. I recommend this book.

BMShel

Sooley is a winner. This engaging story made me laugh out loud, cheer for Sooley, and cry at the tragedy and atrocities. I came to love the characters and wish for their success. As a college basketball fan, I enjoyed the look into that world. As with every Grisham book I’ve read, I could not put it down.

Smoochmom

Disappointed. Hated the turn of events towards the end, in fact I was mad at the author.

Jayhawk Fan #1

Sooleyman. Wonderful story for any basketball fan. I couldn’t put it down. I also learned a lot about the refugee situation in South Sudan. Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Spy Life

A turn for the worst…. I was on the verge of giving this book at the minimum 4 stars but then “it” happened late in the book that was so completely random and out of character that it threw me off. Disappointing to think such a good fun book all of sudden took a turn for the worse.

Choco2468😋😎❤️🌸

Excellent!. I enjoyed reading about players from a HBCU! Good job, Grisham!

Cmb338

Sooley. I enjoyed the details about basketball and refugee camps. The book provides interesting behind the scenes facts for both areas. Sooley is not his typical legal genre but is used to describe some immigration law facts. The book has ups and downs. Admittedly I was shocked but in the end happy I had chosen to read this book.

AWGOHF

Sooley. An excellent sport’s story with an important humanitarian backdrop.

CarolynShoey

Great story!. I loved this book! I became so enthralled with the characters that I cried for the last 50 pages! I love John Grisham books and this is one of his best!

DehSoNice

Love. Such a heroic story of a boy determined to help his family through basketball.

Dshmom

Couldn’t put it down. What I expect from a Grisham work.

Yeah369873

Easily the worst book I’ve read in the last five years.. I have maybe never been so furious about a books ending. Grisham’s books have been declining, you will have to pay me to read another one. I want my money back. What an absolute waste and such a dismantling of the protagonists character in such a short time. It was, NOT believable. Lots of character development that just disappears. Are you not rich enough? Why the need to send a book to market that was simply not ready. Yuck.

Kenalbrin

A Great Read. This is my first John Grisham book and I enjoyed it. I felt that the ending went against the nature of the titular character some but it only means that the book was enjoyable enough to INVEST in the characters…

PVD User

Not sure how to feel about it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s Grisham literature, style and speak at a every turn… but…plot twist(s) toward the end of the book made me lose faith. Read it? Yes, but you may not fall in love with it or the storyline.

Ricecho

Use Some Discretion!. Come on people!!! I only rated this with one star because I can’t submit a review without a rating. I haven’t even read Sooley yet but I already know the ending!!! Why would anyone divulge the plot without prefacing their review with “SPOILER ALERT!!!”??? Sometimes I glance at reviews prior to reading a book, many times I don’t. With Grisham, it doesn’t matter; I read all of his books. Still, I’m disappointed. Use some discretion when writing reviews.

Knightsbane

Sully. Entertaining and I’m not a basketball person. The parallels drawn between the worlds Sullomons lived in were informative and scary.

Too simple to enjoy

Surprising. Kept moving, changing locations but connected by one young man.

Vachonrp

Dooley. A fantastic read, keeping you interested throughout the book. Ups and downs with a unique surprise and a great ending!!

Disappointing Ending. I suppose that the ending is somewhat realistic for some reason f the chapters but probably too optimistic fr others. Nevertheless a good rear. I learned more about basketball and wars and refugees in South Sudan.

Mensamick123

Really not bad for what I think. This book was very. After purchasing new shoes that I really need I loved this book. If only for the ending it was and will always be. I fell asleep woke up had breakfast. I might read it again but I don’t know

Jpljpl26

Ugh. Grisham’s disaster. Disappointing.

DHYYC

Sooley. Great read, well written and keeps the reader interested and wondering what’s coming next. Interesting twist at the end. I always enjoy a Grissom book that’s sports related. I couldn’t put it down!

Captivant. J’ai lu un extrait, acheté le livre et pratiquement lu d’un trait, me suis endormi et repris au réveille maintenant je vais déjeuner

Sooley. Great story but I did not enjoy what happened to Sooley

Grisham did it again!. It was a great book! Definitely a page turner. ❤️

Mike H 66

Excellent. This was such a good book. You don’t have to know anything about basketball, as myself, to enjoy. I rarely give 5 stars - this one deserved it.

TedSummers

Typical Grisham. Excellent and quick read. I enjoyed every word.

Sdcasner

Why. What a boring story - and why do that at the end - I waited for pages for something to happen - and then that - nope, not his best and certainly a brand dilution

Conrad 55

Sooley lacked depth. The story was very basic, I felt like I was reading a long newspaper article, rather than a rich, in depth novel. The plot was very predictable for the most part and the characters were very shallow. Only saving Grace was that the book was relatively short. I would not recommend it.

Mike Walnut Creek

A fine novel. Enjoyable page turner, tragic & heartbreaking toward the end, but a fine redemption.

Notes from PKH

Sooley. A Great book that was sad and inspiration. One of my favorite John Grisham Books.

Aundy19

Sooley. Awful book

Tmeyer

WTFO?. Basketball? Really? How low can one sink????

ChipSanders

Best Ever. As a lover of Grisham’s legal thrillers, I was prepared to be disappointed since this novel was totally different…but was I ever wrong! Sooley is the most fascinating sports related book I have ever read, and Grisham’s knowledge of the recruiting, the coaching, the strategies, the emotion, the promotion, and the players in the game of basketball is astounding, He made me feel like I was right there in that refugee camp, and later on the bench in that Final Four game. The gut wrenching ending brought tears which turned to tears of joy as Sooley’s family was extricated from the despicable conditions of that African refugee Camp to a wonderful life in Durham, NC. Thanks, John for your best ever.

WJRJRWJR

Sooley. One of the best books John Grisham has written. Story so well told it was difficult to put book down and didn’t want it to end. Congrats on a wonderful book.

Hbetekoua

Good Book!. In general, I love all book because, I’m passionate to read, but this book is amazing, I don’t reading, but when i read just the summarize, i’m so excited to buy this book and then the read.

Don’t waste your time.. Simplistic. Boring. Predictable. Written for beginning readers.

Ase1707

Great read!. Wonderful story that is well written. Exciting and engaging.

Doctingey

An academy award winner!. This is an awe inspiring work of art, and would certainly make a “Best Movie Award,” if given the chance on the big screen! “Sooley, Sooley, Sooley!!!”

Alan513894520

Boringg. Have read every Grisham book. I’m a big fan. After 289 pages I stopped reading this one out of sheer boredom.

Worldclasstkd

What a read!. The ending caught me off guard. A wonderful, joyful and sad story.

Gillie24

Excellent read. Loved the characters and plot. One of his finest. Couldn’t lay it down. I’ve enjoyed every one of non-lawyer books. Books just remind you what a talented writer he is all all formats. I enjoy his lawyer books too. Thank you Mr Grisham for the entertainment. Sooley will remain in my mind for some time.

Cap10jr

Score another for Grisham. A wonderful tale about dreams fulfilled and leading to a beautiful ending. Highly enjoyable.

CEOfans1115

He shoots…He scores!. Thank you for bringing to life the struggle of being a refugee along with the spirit of humanity. Reliving each part of the journey, the story comes alive from start to finish. Even the climax with a saddened ending could not complete the hope and promise Sooley began with. Thank you for the basketball but thank you for the important story of humanity.

Pharrball

Sad. The ending was good but could have been just as good with a reunion instead of a statue unveiling. I loved the book until the death of the beloved main character. I was in shock and dismayed when that scene took place. There is enough death in real life and I do not have to pay 15$ to read the obituaries. Mr. Grissom should write for Gray’s Anatomy.

Sdfrdeghfrjed

Waste of money. This was not worth the 14.99 plus tax. The endless basketball and recruitment talk was boring. There was barely much of a real story going on. Ending was quick and I hardly felt any sadness about what happened to the star bc the book was too boring!

Twobeero

Great story. Good story. Not sure that I like the ending though. I’ve had disappointment with some of Grisham’s endings but I’ll take this one and shut up.

Tomdette

Definitely a page turner!. Be sure to have a box of tissues handy!

Leese52

Sooley. John Grisham never ceases to amaze. This story touch my soul. I hated to see it end. Sequel anytime soon?

JPB 9871

Sooley. If you love basketball, you’ll love this book. If not, it will be a bit of a slog. The basketball action is described in great detail.

ECGoad

Not just a basketball story. John Grisham takes the heartbreak of the South Sudan and American college basketball and weaves a heartwarming story. The reader soon appreciates the power of sports to create escape, community and growth. The story is well written, as are all Grisham books. The basketball games are well narrated and give the reader the anticipation of being at a game.

Dooley by John Grisham. A very interesting read with Sooley’s success. I haven’t been able to determine if Soolely is fictional or real: undoubtedly he came to life in the book as a great basketball player.

Coop ollie

Sooley. This book Sooley is by far one of the best I have read brought tears to my eyes and hope loved the way this young man was given chances and was so humble and caring loved this book

Mongoose Steve

Awesome, Riveting, Heartbreaking and Heart Warming. I could not put the book down. Missed 2 NBA playoff games reading Sooley. Cheered and cried. Great writing. Thanks John Grisham.

KimRN30

Great story telling. This book is exciting, moving, and sad. You root for the main character and you ache for the families.

Softball6520

Heartwarming Story. Great read!

TLH-Shopper

“Sooley, Sooley, Sooley”. Mr. Grisham takes us on some completely unexpected twists and turns, at least for this reader. Very entertaining and fast-moving. As always, I appreciate his ability to educate readers on social issues in a way that doesn’t chastise the us for our absence of accurate knowledge. He just inspires me to learn more and remain aware of the issues. If you are a rabid basketball fan, you will not be disappointed. Play after play is described in b-ball language. Gotta admit, I had to look up a lot of terms but that just made it fun.

Gladys CPA

Nice story. As always well written

Mark-strat

Just plain excellent. Loved this book. Not a lawyer novel, but still vintage John Grisham! This book is so well done. I might read it again

Frenchy0674

The story friendship and perseverance, but mostly, family ❤️. An enriching story of hope, love, strength, and fortitude. Never give up, keep hold of your heart, and go forward. A wonderful story told in full circle.
