Not a Happy Family by Shari Lapena
Not a Happy Family by Shari Lapena Book Summary
AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER!
Another thrilling domestic suspense novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door
“Lapena is a master of manipulation. With her latest page-turning thriller… she is once again at the top of her game.” —USA Today
“In this fast-paced, twisted family saga, Shari Lapena keeps you guessing until the very last page...” —Paula Hawkins
In this family, everyone is keeping secrets—even the dead.
Brecken Hill in upstate New York is an expensive place to live. You have to be rich to have a house there, and Fred and Sheila Merton certainly are rich. But even all their money can't protect them when a killer comes to call. The Mertons are brutally murdered after a fraught Easter dinner with their three adult kids. Who, of course, are devastated.
Or are they? They each stand to inherit millions. They were never a happy family, thanks to their vindictive father and neglectful mother, but perhaps one of the siblings is more disturbed than anyone knew. Did someone snap after that dreadful evening? Or did another person appear later that night with the worst of intentions? That must be what happened. After all, if one of the family were capable of something as gruesome as this, you'd know.
Wouldn't you?

Fantastically Murdery!. I love all of Shari Lapena’s books. She never fails to weave surprises in and out, and then back in again!
5stars. So good. Will keep you guessing until the end
Marvelous!. I love Shari Lapena books!
Slow. Took me forever to finish. Slow slow slow.
Good book. Good Book
Not a Happy Family. A real page turner. The closer I got to the end, the harder it was to put it down!
Not a Happy Family. Suspense til the end with a great jolt
BORING. Let's put it this way, I skipped 1/2 of the book and felt like I missed nothing. A thriller? Nope! Who done it?? Kinda!! I'm not sure what book the other reviewers were reading... this was not a great book and I was bummed!!
Not a Happy Family. Interesting!
Great book for mystery fans…. The story had lots of twists and turns…unexpected turns. I found myself invested in the story and it’s characters. Great book to read on a beach vacation or road trip.
Loved until the very end. For some reason I thought rose was the killer , but the big reveal of “Jenna “ was not expected . Overall a great read , and I can not wait to read more of her books .
100 stars!. Holy shiesters this was an excellent book. I couldn’t read it fast enough. Strong storyline and characters. Loved the ending.
Great story however…. The storyline was very well written however I think it was drawn out way too long and it was to the point can we just find out what’s going on.
Great read!. Super fast read and kept you guessing till the end. Great beach book!
Quick reas. Definitely kept me interested throughout the whole book, quick read. Plenty of suspense to keep you guessing until the final reveal
End was a disappointment. This was a fast read and the writing moved the story quickly, which I like. Unfortunately, the characters were all so flawed that I didn’t really like any of them and there wasn’t a twist or big reveal that I was waiting for.
Loved this book!. Definitely had a hard time putting this one down. Keeps you guessing the entire book!
Don’t bother. Frustrating. Not a good read. Save your time.
Another great book by this author!!. I loved this book, even though my prediction turned out wrong - or maybe because it did? It is one of those books that I couldn’t wait to get back to but didn’t want to finish. This is why I always wait with such excitement for her novels.
It was great, but…. I really enjoyed reading this book…most of the characters were unlikeable, to the point where you’re hoping for ANY of them to be the murderer as long as one them hopefully gets convicted… And then when you suddenly find out whodunnit, it’s weirdly anticlimactic. You see a hint of justice at the very, VERY end, but even that feels empty because (like I said) all of the characters are pretty deplorable. That being said though, I did enjoy reading this book, plot-wise. Which I guess is really the point. The ending is actually the only real downside.
Great book!. Read it!
A good read, but too predictable. I’ve enjoyed many of her books, but this one was too predictable. The ending fell a bit flat and left me thinking a twist would come but never did. Still a good read, but a bit anti-climatic at the end.
The best book I’ve read in a long time. Could not put it down. Highly recommend.
Loves it. I really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing. Surprise til the ending. Would recommend.
Boring. Lame
Not A Happy Family. Kept you guessing til the reveal.
“Not a Happy Family” - Fun Throughout. “Not a Happy Family” is a fun ride of shifting focus in pursuit of the murderer of a wealthy couple. The story plays with the idea of genetic psychopathy as a sort of shell game: “Which child inherited the gene for murder?” I love the fast pace of Shari’s books: the story is tightened up and compressed at the cost of descriptive passages; the reader’s attention is tugged in one direction and then another, sort of like the type of screenplays one might find in the American TV series “Blue Bloods,” which often features three storylines in one hour (with commercials!). Highly recommended!
The Definition of Dysfunction People. The way the pieces of the characters fit in the story. How those not a part of the family, in laws and friends, see this family in their true light Money, power and stays…mean nothing when it comes to interpersonal relationships Also obvious degrees of psychopaths within a family. Liked the ending which ties it together
Great Read!. Couldn’t put this down. The writer has you guessing to the very end who done it and just when you think you’ve figured it out, you’re carried into another direction! A very nice read in deed! PLW123 Chicago
Couldn’t put this book down!. Loved this book! Read it in 2 days!!
Fast read.. Implausible but fun read.
Great beach read!. Another good one from the master! Fast paced and twisty! Well done, Shari!
Top pick!!. I’m in a book club and this has been one of my favorites we have read! It wasn’t picked by me but I certainly recommend it! It will keep you on the edge of your seat and will not fail to keep you turning the pages! It’s a “whodunnit” with fantastic writing.
Not much effort put into this one. So…this was a very poor offering from the author. The characters aren’t fleshed out so we can’t get invested in any of them. I didn’t care what happened them. They were rich, entitled, spoiled, whiny people with perceived problems. They were selfish and had no loyalty. They barely had souls. The book dragged out way too long by basically repeating the same stuff between different characters three times over for each sibling. The kids treated their housekeeper/nanny who had been with the family for about 30 years so poorly. When she was wrongfully accused they did nothing to stick up for her - after she basically raised all of them because their own parents couldn’t be bothered. The oldest daughter (Caroline) took the earrings off her dead mother and then moved into their house as soon as she could. The middle son (Dan) was a worthless creep and his wife was too especially since she was staying with him only for the money. The youngest daughter (Jenna) was a bad seed with no morals. She was basically evil and had no remorse for killing her parents - this after they supported her as an adult while she slept around, did drugs, partied and did very little else. These ungrateful people got away with everything and continued on like nothing ever happened. No repercussions. You hope that the spouses (Ted and Lisa) wise up and move on but it seems like Dan’s wife will stay so she can have the money. The only redeeming thing is that Jenna might get what’s coming to her but that’s little comfort as we know the rest just went on with their lives. These people were trash and contributed nothing to society. One can only hope that these kinds of people are extremely rare IRL. I guess the father got what was coming to him being that he killed his own father when he was a teen. I have a hard time believing he would leave his kids or anyone any money being as cruel as he was their entire lives. The author chose that out of character decision just so it would fit the narrative of her scenario (Murder) otherwise the kids would have nothing to kill or fight over - which means no book. His sister Audrey wasn’t much better than the kids even though she thought she was. She was happy when she found out her brother was going to die from cancer as that meant she’d get rich quicker. She was acting like a spoiled child when she found out she wasn’t left half of the inheritance. The author should have made her more likeable. She was trying to avenge her brother’s death but she was awful herself so you couldn’t even root for her. The reading is very easy - a third grader could read this. You can tell no research went into the writing. The author wasted time on descriptions of people or things that had no point to the story and ultimately went nowhere. Rose was a major player in this and yet her future was kind of unclear. It’s like she was in the book just to provide more pointless drama. Story could’ve been the same without her in it. It’s a shame this writer is getting accolades for ho hum writing but I guess she appeals to the dumbed down society we have become. If you want to mindlessly read something that will not leave an impression on you or stay with you any longer than it takes you to close the book then by all means read this. Anyone else…avoid.
Fiction. Psychological mysteries at there best. Love her books!
No finish. It was a good read, up until the end which was rushed and anticlimactic.
Riveting!. Full of twists & turns! Block off time because you won’t want to put this one down!
Holes, so many plot holes. An unbelievable plot, lots of repetition, silly police questioning, and tunnel vision like you wouldn’t believe, made this a very weak story. Pass.
Not happy but darn well thought out. LaPena is in top form creating and developing her characters and a compelling, unpredictable story.
Amazing. One of her best books! I really enjoyed it.
Ending. I was really into this book but the ending disappointed me.
Not worth the time. Decent setups, with no pay out. The reveal of the mystery isn’t earned, there’s no twist, and felt lazy and rushed.
Really drawn out, and just odd coincidences. For me, it felt like the story dragged on. Just a few bits of information every so often, but nothing really truly exciting. Just didn’t enjoy this one that much.
Really good until it’s not. This was a great book! I couldn’t put it down. I really got into the characters and plot but then it just ended. The author did a great job weaving the story together and it was very suspenseful and then it just ended abruptly. 4 stars bc it was a great story except for the ending.
Long and boring. Literally zero character development.
Meh. You know who the killer is at the very LAST chapter. It felt like it was dragging on for a bit. Wont read again.
Really though…. LAME!!!!!
Disclosure of Murderer Happens Too Quickly. I enjoyed this book. But I was hoping for a more clever ending. Instead the disclosure of the real murderer was a let down. Not that that person was the murderer, but that all the clever detective work and clues were dropped, and the audience was essentially just told in a rapid set of paragraphs who the murderer was.
