State of Affairs

State of Affairs by Marie Force Book Summary

The phone call that changed their lives forever…

Minutes after Vice President Nick Cappuano and Lt. Sam Holland get the call that President Nelson has been found dead in the residence on Thanksgiving, they’re still processing that Nick has been asked to come to the White House to take the oath of office.

As they go through the motions to ensure a peaceful transition of power, Sam has a million and one concerns about her husband, her family, the Nelson family, the country and the enormity of what Nick is about to take on. In the back of her mind is another major concern: What does this mean for my job? No other first lady in history has held a job outside the White House, but she’s determined to be the first, to blaze new trails for those who will follow her. However, in order to do that, she quickly realizes that compromises will have to be made to continue working as a Homicide detective.

Their lives become an immediate firestorm of meetings, requests for interviews, difficult questions from their children and a host of potential landmines to navigate as they make the transition from second family to first family. An unexpected issue with a diplomatic trip to Iran quickly thrusts Nick into the thick of his new responsibilities while Sam confronts a murder investigation that may have ties to a cold case from fifteen years ago.

As everything around them spins out of control, Sam and Nick take refuge with each other, relying on their unbreakable bond to see them through the storm.

- Leave the preaching to pastors2 star

Sometimes you just want to be entertained by a book without political undertones. This book left you feeling that it was a preaching seminar about politics. I’m tired of reading about the Democratic Party.

This series just gets better and better. Can’t wait for the next. Pudge48

- Captivating!5 star

I have loved Sam and Nick from the first Fatal book. The emotional rollercoaster had me laughing and crying. I love that Sam is keeping her job! I love the family they are both fiercely committed to and I loved the interwoven plots. For those who might be turned away because it’s about the presidency, don’t let it scare you away! It’s the only political thing I’ll voluntarily read! Loved the closure for Calvin’s family, if only every family could be as blessed. The tears over Skippy at the end had me totally undone. I Recommend this book if you want to fall in love with love again!

- I loved it5 star

I loved all of the “Fatal” series book. But putting them in The White House was inspired. I loved the first book in The White House. I can’t wait for more of Nick, Sam, Scotty, the littles and Skippy.

Excellent read! Thank you too my favorite author for not disappointing me!

- Not her best...2 star

This book has very little plot or character development- it is definitely a way for Force to introduce all of the characters from the previous series to the new series. Quite dull from start to finish if you’ve read other series. Maybe the next one will be better; here’s hoping.

- Always on the edge of my seat5 star

It’s hard to put in words the anticipation I felt while reading this book and all of Marie Force’s other books. I’m always on the edge of my seat reading to find the clues for what’s happening. Loved every moment of reading about Nick, Sam and the kids and can hardly wait for the next book

Marie Force knocks it out of the park with State of Affairs. Love Sam and Nick and their wonderful family and friends. Can’t wait for the next story!!

- Absolutely Fabulous!5 star

There aren’t enough stars for this book or the Fatal/First Family series! I couldn’t wait for it to hit my iPad but didn’t want it to end! Nick and Sam’s address may have changed from Ninth St., to Pennsylvania Ave., but their relationship has not. The love and respect between them is always evident and is the main reason why this is my favorite series. Nick and Sam may have received “promotions,” but their priorities have not. Their relationship, family and friends are always forefront to both, but especially Nick which makes him even sexier. This was short on the suspense part but was a blend of Nick’s evolving political role with a new case tied to an old one for Sam. It made for a very unique story that satisfied me completely. Marie interspersed interesting facts like what occurs when a sitting President passes away in office with the grit of her normal writing and in no way overwhelmed with dry, useless, or boring trivia or governmental roles. If I’d have to criticize, there’d be only two: it could never be long enough and there was a bit of a cliffhanger in the epilogue which set up book two of the series coming in December. My criticisms are actually compliments to Marie and how good she is at her job. I’ve reread her books and the Fatal series more than any other books I own. When I hit a dry spell, Nick and Sam always satisfy!

- AMAZING!!5 star

A new chapter in the lives of a very special couple that takes you on a thrilling ride into their world. Sam and Nick embracing their new normal and bringing everyone they love along hits you right in the feels! If you haven’t read a Marie Force book you are missing out. The Fatal Series is followed by A First Family book 1 State of Affairs is just as captivating.

- Amazing!5 star

The first in the new First Family series and a definite winner. A new chapter in the lives of Nick and Sam and their family. This book is amazing on every level and, as always, I can't wait for the next book in this series! If you haven't read how they got here, start at the beginning with the Fatal series, you will most definitely not be disappointed!

State of Affairs was so good. Marie Force continues to outdo herself. A must read.

- Entering into a new world5 star

Sam and Nick enter into their new world of the White House but I love how Marie keeps them centered on their family and being true to themselves. Family has always come first and nothing is more important that the twins’ birthday party. Sam is a cop that sees her team as family. Don’t mess with her team! And she fights for those who can no longer speak for themselves, no matter their past. I can’t wait for more from the White House!

Reads_for_fun - Fantastic Story - Another hit by Marie Force5 star

These stories are fun, unique, loving and always interesting with the twists and turns. The characters are real and complex. The mix of mystery and family overshadowed with life in Washington is a perfect combination. It’s so good that when I look at how many pages are left and realize I’m sad there are so few and will have to wait months for the next instalment - you know it’s a great book.

This story is truly a force of great writing. The love affair between Sam and Nick is so well written that it takes the reader into the heart of the characters. I especially loved Nick’s relationship stemming and encompassing his thoughts, words and actions when he accepts the role of President....every politician should read this story so they would learn how to respect and honour the role of accepting the office that represents the people of this great nation. Kudos from a huge fan. JH

What a wonderful start to the First Family Series!!!! I have loved Nick and Sam’s stories from the moment I met them way back when and I was so excited for State of Affairs but this book was way better than I could ever of imagined, I could not put this book down and now I’m excited to listen to it on audible. Whenever I catch up with Nick, Sam their family and friends I feel like I’m home, this couple are true soulmates and the people they surround themselves with are like minded and easy to love. But this book takes their journey to a whole different level when Nick becomes President so will this be the end of Sam’s career or will Nick do what ever is in his power to keep the woman he loves happy and safe. State of Affairs had me on the edge of my seat throughout and in true Ms Force form we got a captivating unpredictable story with characters you can’t help loving, it was wonderful to see this couple’s new journey beginning and it was perfect catching up with Scotty, the Littles and everyone who makes up their family and friends. If this book is anything to go by Ms Force will have yet another hit on her hands and I’m excited to see where she takes us.

I couldn’t wait to dive in to the first book in Nick and Sam’s newest journey. This was a great book and one that I listened to in one go. I couldn’t out it on hold not for a minute. I just had to know what was going to happen. The narrator Eve Kaminsky did a great job bringing the story to life for me. It was so great to be back in the world of Nick and Sam, their family and friends, it really is like coming home when I read these books. Nick and Sam are so well suited to each other and their love continues to grow whilst living complicated and at times dangerous lives. Ms.Force delivered a story that had me on an tender hooks with twists and turns that left me reeling as Nick and Sam faced a life altering event. Not only that but the heat and sizzle between Nick and Sam was intense as always. You will be drawn into this story, you cannot help yourself, such is the skill of Ms.Force you cannot help but become invested in all of the characters. I always love catching up with Sam, Nick, Scotty, The Littles and their extended family.
