The Last Thing He Told Me

The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave Book Summary

A “gripping” (Entertainment Weekly) mystery about a woman who thinks she’s found the love of her life—until he disappears.

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated.

With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a riveting mystery, certain to shock you with its final, heartbreaking turn.

Kept my attention the whole time!

An excellent mystery story!

Author’s writing is very hard to keep up with. Story plot had so many possible openings for really good twists that we’d never used. Ending was basically nothing. If you read the first and last page of the book, that would be better than wasting your time reading the whole book.

Poorly researched, poorly executed. Don’t waste your time.

Had to read in one sitting. Thankfully i started on a Sat afternoon. Lots of suspense, twists and turns loved this book.

Storyline was decent, but a bit sporadic. A good idea for a book and a nice final page but it didn’t strike me as much of a page turner. I wanted to know the answer to the obvious questions, but I only completed the book out of commitment to reading it all the way through once I started. Then again, I have never written a book. Props to Laura Dave. 🙂

Beautifully written and captivating. You are hooked the second you begin this book until the very end. My heart hurts at the end of the book but feels happy with the ended at the same time.

I love the unexpected love story woven into this book. Our family is not always the ones we are born to.

Once I picked this book up, I could not put it down.

Great story, beautifully written and I’m sad it’s over!

I read it in two days. It’s been awhile since I had read a good book like this one! And the ending is perfect.

Great plot and mind escape for a few days

Simply astonishing! The ending is everything. Period!

A well-written page-turner. Loved every minute during the reading. No spoilers here.

This book is filled with ridiculously disappointing clichés that are offensive. Mobster who works for the “organization” for smokes cigarettes drinks whiskey and has bodyguards who wear tight suits? Who lets a woman he’s never met free after decades of resentment and bitterness and a stint in prison? A woman who deserts the “love of her life” for a kid she barely has a connection with? It’s started great and then just crashed at tidy predictable end.

With the amazing female fiction writers out right now (Kristin Hannah, Kate Quinn, Delia Owens, Tana French, Lisa Jewell, Colleen Hoover, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Alice Feeney), this book just falls flat. Not believable, lots of holes, but she wrote a book. That is huge, so that's the 3 stars. But I won't buy any more of her books with so many other amazing writers out there. I originally bought it because Reese Book club recommended it, I guess like a lot of people did.

The premise is compelling but the characters are not believable. Hanna is insecure because her mother abandoned her early in her childhood, but her grandfather raised her and taught her to do woodwork. Somehow she becomes a popular craft furniture maker. Strangely, there is nothing in the book about her craft, about which she shows no real interest. She moves spontaneously from Manhattan to Sausalito with a man she barely knows, who has a 16-year-old daughter. The author portrays Hanna as insecure but willing to take incredible risks — what? The daughter is portrayed as a grumpy and disdainful, begrudging Hanna for not being her dead mother. She is thinly drawn to behaves stupidly, as if she had no sense, when she is supposed to smart and talented. The end play is totally unbelievable. Good idea, but poor execution.

Loved this story start to finish. Couldn’t put it down! Excellent read!

This book was a good mystery read!!

this was a good read.

Loved it. Great read for some light suspense and warming, loving vibes.

What an incredibly lame finish!

Loved this book, very easy to read. Interesting characters with strong bonds and surprising twists. Highly recommend.

Good read. Would definitely read more of her books. Great ending. Certainly not what I expected.

I enjoyed it!

What a tragic abs beautifully written story. Full of gentle twists and turns. It touched my heart and made me sad, but loved the ending.

First book I have read in about 5+ years. I am currently over here crying at the ending. I NEED MORE.

The ending was terrible. The climax was great, but the ending left off like a Netflix series where there should be a next episode, not the end of a book. Disappointing.

A story with just the right amount of love, drama, and thrill to keep you wanting more! Puts the priorities of life and love exactly where they should be! Excellent read…

I read the book and concluded I hate it. The story makes no sense. Why is this woman who is apparently a common woodshopper playing hardball with US Marshalls and FBI? The author does not include any believeable details about the government agencies to indicate she did any research into their operating procedures. The main character is a complete unbelievable moron. The writing is okay; at least it is digestable. The author also makes characters homosexual for no reason whatsoever. Do not recommend.

The opening was promisingly intriguing, but the way the story is told gets quite annoying… I felt the repetitive descriptions becomes too forced, ie. how much the main character loves her spouse, how confusing the spouse departure is etc. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend the book. Not too happy with Reese’s bookclub recommendation this time :(

I couldn’t put the book down with all its twists & turns, regardless of how many other important things I had to do. You could never guess where the next clue was leading to. Such realistic like-able characters.

Contrived and predictable. Wish I hadn’t wasted the time.

I wasn't expecting much from this book but this book surprised me and how! From the moment I picked it up, I simply could not put it down without knowing how the story would end. Did I gasp a handful g times? Yes. Did I shed a tear at the very end? Most definitely. If ym are looking for a suspense novel that is a real pageturner, look no further!

Easy read, enjoyable twist and turns!

Very entertaining I did not want to stop reading. I loved the ending.

A great quick read that keeps you guessing from the beginning.

I have never been someone to read books and this one caught my eye and I couldn’t put it down. I hope there is a part two!

I couldn’t put this book down! So we’ll written

Loved the suspense that grips you from the very beginning and holds tight throughout.

The book is great minus the ending.

Finished in two days!

Loved it! Couldn’t put it down! Quick read!

I enjoyed this book as it was a fast read. I like how each chapter switched between now and before.

Very good read. Left me hanging though!

Such an amazing book from beginning to end. It was full of feel good moments, sadness and even a bit of suspense. You are left with a content heart and open mind.

This book was picked for my book club and it was a great read.

Enjoyed the story

Very interesting and fun to read. Though the last quarter was just ok compared to the great first three quarters.

I personally love the back and forth of past to present. Love the way it was written. Ending could have been a tad better or else it would have got the full five starts.

Pretty dry, very slow. Felt like a lot of ‘hanging in there’ while I waited for something exciting to happen. This is the first time I’ve read this author and it will probably be the last. Her writing style of 99% internal dialogue is tiresome. Live and learn 🤷🏻‍♀️

The book was a page turner but about 2/3 in, it felt like the author just wanted to finish it and get it out the door. Worth reading but it could have been better with a few more edits and a bit more time.

I absolutely loved this book! I couldn’t put it down. Enjoy!

Laura Dave writes like an immature 7th grader in English class. The positive reviews should not be believed. The 1- star ratings reviews can be believed.Do not waste your time or money on this insipid nonsense.Only a desperate publisher would consider publishing this awful book.

Couldn’t put it down!

Enjoyed the read

I don’t get the chance to read often so when I do, I need a book that draws me in from the start. I couldn’t put this down. Great read!

I thought this book was good. Had an interesting twist that kept my interest.

Decent plot, but it has too many convenient connections and coincidences that irritate the reader. Bailey doesn’t seem to have any lovable qualities that make the reader rally for her situation. Rather, it is easy to hate her rather than understand or sympathize with her. Also many of the flashbacks are unnecessary and irrelevant.

Great plot, amazing potential. Writing style is too simplistic for my liking. Sophomoric.

Couldn’t put it down, loved it!

Kept me engaged and wanting to read more except for a few lagging parts in the middle. Loved the ending.

I couldn’t put this book down! I would 10/10 recommend this to anyone. The way the story just makes you continue to want more turning page after page. Although I wish we got more at the ending I think we got just enough to close out the story.

This is an intriguing mystery right from the start. The characters are interesting and storyline great.

Enjoyed. Kept my attention

Great read. I haven’t read a book for many years and am hooked now. Will definitely buy more of her books.

Rarely do I find a book that I can’t put down. This was it. Highly recommend.

Kept me reading. Not much depth but definitely interesting reading with surprises along the way.

A just right read. Enough character development that you feel invested, well-timed plot that keeps the pages turning.

Such a great read! I’ve recommended to s veal of my friend.

Recommend it to everyone

Very boring; so much of the characters just having the same conversations over and over.

Outstanding book I greatly enjoyed reading. Hannah was a very admirable character, lucky to have had a steady and responsible grandfather to instill courage and strength in the face of tremendous adversity and loss. That obviously gave her the fortitude to make some tough but sound decisions to benefit her step daughter. Hannah made the best decision for Bailey that only someone in her shoes with her unique background could have made - knowing the hole in your heart that is never filled when one or both of your parents leave …. But that is actually a blessing in the long run when it results in a better outcome.

Loved the story of love, loss, and renewal. It will stick with me and make me strive to be a better father.

I read this book in 48 hours! It was captivating and Interesting.

Just as I’m getting into the characters the story ends, which baffles me because there was so much more to tell. Don’t bother with this one.

Always kept me on the edge of my seat, I stopped reading for a while and then I saw this book and now i’m hooked back into reading and i’m probably going end up reading this book more then once!

Too much main character monologue. Story takes forever to get going, and it is not captivating.

Story was well developed but ended way too abruptly

Couldn’t put it down.

Just read it in one day! Such a great read.

How does this garbage get published. I want my money back

Spellbinding. Characters fully developed - whether you like them or not. Plot was not predictable. loved it.

Good, fine. Not great by any means.

Great read

Good, fine. Not great by any means.

I could not putting it down. A gripping human story. I loved it.

Took a while to get into it but once you do it’s excellent.

Excellent writing, I couldn’t put it down! Kept the reader engaged, caring about the characters, wanting to know more. It was very interesting to follow Hannah’s sharp intelligence and deductive process, as well as her motivations, love, and courage! A+!

Teen dog walkers with 15 dogs? Lake Washington adjoining Seattle does not freeze over, there is no ice fishing there, just too many of these fact less actuals. It has to be real to be believed.

Great suspense novel and an involving narrative. I liked the main character a lot and empathized with her frightening dilemmas as the book progressed

Fantastic story line, i just wish there was more of an intense plot and i really feel this book would have been better displayed as a film!

This book was so good at pulling you in and tagging you along. Easy read. However, the ended was just my what I was hoping for..

Ferocious love makes people do the unthinkable

Couldn’t put it down

I could not put this book down. Thrilling, suspenseful and wonderfully written. I loved the whole book!

Slow start but eventually couldn’t put it down!

This book started off really solid but by halfway through I was struggling to finish. Was hoping for a more exciting ending. Not sure how this book is #1 right now.

What an amazing book!

Wonderful, sophisticated and well developed characters.

Don’t waste your time !

Amazing book I finished it in two days! I couldn’t put it down. I was a bit disappointed in the ending but the suspense was amazing. I wish the author would write a sequel of Owens point of view!

Great book!! I finished it in two days!

Could not put it down. It ranks a”10”

A good quick read
