Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.
Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.
Or does he?
An irresistible interstellar adventure as only Andy Weir could deliver, Project Hail Mary is a tale of discovery, speculation, and survival to rival The Martian—while taking us to places it never dreamed of going.

Amazing. I’ve never read a book I love so much. It was exciting to get to each new chapter. Such an amazing story!
More please!. Weir has an amazing imagination and ability to turn that imagination into a gripping plot, with lovable characters and humor. As an added bonus the book reminds us that the universe is fascinating.
Fantastic book. Absolutely loved it.
Great Sci Fi. It's really the main bond between two main characters that is the heart of this story.
Fantastic. I’m not typically a fan of sci-fi, but I loved The Martian so much I decided to try this one out. No joke, this book is even better than The Martian. I was addicted, entranced, and invested immediately. Rocky is my new favorite book character.
Amazing. Such a thrilling page turner, that sneaks a ton of science education in while being thoroughly entertained.
👍🏻. Very clever story. The intergalactic friendship between the characters is poignant and heartwarming.
Amazing. This immediately became my favorite book. And the voice actors performance and voices is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to listen to this again and again
I Couldn’t Put It Down!. This is my second Weir book and being a writer myself I am in awe of how he seems to take difficult scientific concepts and explain them in a way that is easy to follow for a non-scientist like me. Additionally, I was unable to put this book down! The ongoing mystery of how the protagonist ended up on the ship is told through flashes of memory interspersed with real-time narration. The adventure continues on a pretty rapid pace with very little down time as the protagonist and his alien friend solve problem after problem with science. Finally, what looks to be a predictable ending does a twist and becomes an amazing conclusion that brought happy tears to my eyes. I highly recommend this book.
Superb. Maybe his masterpiece. One of the most absorbing books I have ever read. No spoilers. No summaries. Just go right into it.
Even better than The Martian. Super-ingenious plot. Good characters. Lots of surprises. Weir’s humor is a lot of fun. Just have to skim lightly (or skip) the how-it-works science stuff, but I am sure science nerds would like at least some of that. Altogether a great read, and I look forward to the movie, although I am concerned that they will leave out way too much. They should keep it all!
Love love love it!. My wife and I read this book together, and I was just in love with the voices she came up with for the characters, and the story is very moving, exciting and touching. It always felt like a game to figure out/guess what solution to the new problems that arose during the adventure would be! Very creative and methodically written, enjoyable to the last drop!
Loved it!!!. One of the best books I’ve ever read. And I have read plenty. Thank you, Andy!!!
Great read. This book is very interesting and great fun!
Muito bom. Gostei muito
Truly entertaining, funny, touching, stimulating book. If you love science and have a heart, read this book
Unbelievably Addicting. An enthralling survival tale packed with heavily researched science and sci-fi just beyond the realm of reality, Andy weir has done it again! He rocked the world with his very first novel the Martian and we all had high hopes for his next books. Artemis was good but as crime writing wasn’t his strong suit, it fell short of most people’s expectations. However in Project Hail Mary Andy Weir goes back to what he’s good at and once again blows us away! Buy this book, you won’t regret it and neither will your friends and family when you inevitably make them read it.
Masterpiece. Hooked on this from start to finish. If this were a movie it would be a hit for sure. Cute, goofy, suspenseful and a race to save mankind. A book anybody can read and slowly have their eyes glued to the pages.
such a feel good book. YES
Really good!. If you liked the Martian, you will like this one!
The Hail MaryProject. Really fun story,
Full circle. I always find it fascinating when a story begins with our hero in one setting and ends at that same setting but our hero is now changed. Project Hail Mary gives you the type of conclusion that makes you feel like you are a part of that change. It is a journey that puts you in a crossroads between survival and altruism. Ultimately having you face both the best and the worst sides of what it means to be human.
I was addicted to this book. Weir’s “Hail Mary” captivates you in a story of humanity, redemption, love, and mystery. You’ll be drawn in from the beginning with a galaxy of questions that unravels as you read, and you won’t be disappointed with this tale.
Best book EVER!!!!!!. LOOK AT TITLE.
So… so good.. Like really good. Really.
Great characters!. I loved his description of the alien race he encounters!
Project Hail Mary. Great story and Rocky was IT for me.
Very entertaining. Fun nerdy read
Great book. Awesome storyline
Fist bump worthy. Peak storytelling and had me on the edge of my seat!
A New Favorite!. I LOVED this book. It was absolutely not what I was expecting. Funny, endearing, and not so dense with science that you need to understand it all to keep up with the story. I don't usually re-read books but I see myself visiting this one often.
Terrific story of space and humans, and possible others. The story is engaging and entertaining. The friendship that Grace and Rocky find is Exemplary. There is nothing like pursuing a common dream.
4.5. More like a 4.5 I really liked the amount of science vs what my husband calls “drama”. In other words, it had a nice balance to where I wasn’t just lost in all the science. It was all mostly understandable. I really liked the relationship between Ryland and his unexpected ally. Very interesting and emotional story of planetary salvation.
I read this book so fast! It had me from the jump!. This is great for readers of all ages. It’s got a science element, friendship, loathing for home just a lot of reasons to love this book. Highly recommend.
Loved it!. Just like The Martian and Artemis, I have to re-read this great book!
Fantastic.. Loved this, I can already see the adapted movie to this.
Stunning. Haven’t read a newer book that is this good in a long long time.
Hail Mary. A very good book! Exciting from beginning to end!
Even better than The Martian. I really enjoyed The Martian but found this book even better. I had a hard time putting it down. It’s a great and inventive story, dramatic at times and funny at others. The scientific details weren’t overwhelming and gave it a level of authenticity. If you liked The Martian, you’ll love this book.
Best book since sliced bread. I have read a few different books and most books i have liked but none have I liked to read more than this book. I don’t know fancy criticizing or book praising words so I’ll just say that I like this book so much that I bought the physical copy of it. If that’s not enough, I have also read it 15 times over the span of a year. This book is great. I like rockets, I like science, I like weird energy storage methods I like aliens, All those are in this book.
WHAT FUN. AN EPIC ADVENTURE.
Hail Mary. Fascinating from the get go. Well written with plenty of scientific info and familiar references to hold my interest.
Enjoyed it!. A happy sci-fi with all the relevant math, science and made up bits. A total fist-bump.
Immaculate Storytelling. Perfect character storytelling and world building. Not a single boring chapter. Loved everything about this book. I’m a bit late to the Andy Weir bandwagon, but I’m officially hooked! Will be reading LOTS more by this author after this one!
Read on paperback. Ten out of ten book
Bravo, Andy. I did not want this book to end. A wonderful epic.
Amazing!!!. Loved this book so much!
Best book I’ve read in years!. I laughed, I cried ,and I enjoyed every minute of this INCREDIBLE story! It was PERFECT from beginning to END! Please add it to your library before it’s too late! It’s definitely a Sci Fi CLASSIC!
Amazing!!. I wish I could read this book for the first time again. One of the best books I’ve ever read. Honestly amazing
First sci-fi read. This was my first sci fi book and really enjoyed it! Easy to follow along

Can’t blink. So Addictive. Brilliant book. Beyond from the common brief of an interstellar journey, the author pushed the limits to the unthinkable possibilities beyond this world. Creative SciFi yet sustained in scientific facts. Best book I’ve ever read. Period!
Loved it. A great combination of science, humour and suspense.
you got me good Andy!. 😭😭😭💓💓💓 the three last words of the book had me bawling
Generally satisfying. It’s a good read, there were some moments when I didn’t believe the science, but I’m not an astrophysicist so it was either “I thought it didn’t make sense” or “it didn’t make sense”. It was probably the former but I enjoyed it nonetheless. It kept me wanting to turn the page and that’s what matters. I enjoy stories that venture to the stars and it delivered.
Perfect. I loved everything about this book.
Incredible. Loved the story from start to finish!! Stayed up way too late reading it 🤓
Binge reading for science lovers!. I normally don’t read this enthusiastically but I could not put Project Hail Mary down. I’m a science lover (not an expert) and the science felt believable, added so much to the story, and was easy to understand. It gave me the emotional experience I had hoped to experience in the movie Gravity but didn’t until reading this book. I got so emotional near the end. So much to love about the main characters, even their flaws. Just wow. Can’t wait to read what this Andy Weir comes up with next!!
Happy happy happy. Best book. Happy, happy happy
Joy. A joy to read.
Old school hard SF. Read this in a day and a half. Haven’t done that in years. Reminds me of Arthur C Clark, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle all rolled into one. If you liked The Martian, you’ll love this.
Pretty good. Pretty good but as a biologist myself I’ll say we aren’t nearly as good at math as is depicted in the novel.
Hail Mary. So monotonous, slow and boring I thought I might die of old age reading this.
Loved every page. I really enjoy Andy Weir’s writing style and how his books are filled with conflicts. They’re not solved by accident but instead through plausible scientific processes. His “Possible Science Fiction” should be an official genre style. I was attached to this book right from the start and thoroughly enjoyed every page. Looking forward to his next book! Well done!
Amazingly genius!. This is the same author who wrote the Martian in which the movie is based on. He has a new book! I have never been at the edge of my seat by reading a science fiction book as this! This astronaut’s adventure in space to save the human race and earth is thrilling. All his experiments and troubleshooting with ingenuity using science (micro biology, biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) and engineering is so brilliant. I’ve learn so much from just reading this book! Wow! What a great genius book this is! You don’t need to be a nerd to appreciate the science and engineering experience in this book. It was a great ride like an excellent movie! I loved every bit of it.
Sooooo entertaining and mind-expanding. Andy Weir’s writing appeals to the optimist and humanist in me, and it’s deeply funny. If you love high stakes and tear-wrenching compassion, Weir’s the author for you.
10/10. Took me 9 hours to read and helped as a quick revision for my physics exam lol
Surprising, funny, and filled will serious science action!. Another wonderful book. The characters immediately grow on you, the plot develops and twists, and keeps you on edge enough to be compelling without being disorienting. What could possibly be better than Danger, Humor, and Science???? :-)
Definitely recommend. The narration of the audiobook is really good and so is the story. And the science They explain is also very intriguing.
Great Book. Fans of The Martian and Artemis will not be disappointed. I don’t want to spoil anything as I went in knowing almost nothing and think that was for the best experience. Just put your faith in the author and he delivers.
Not what I hope for. Very formulaic. Not as engaging as I expected.
Beautiful. This was a breathtaking story - literally, I breathed sighs of relief and yelped with agony alongside the storyline like a crazy person. It captures an infinite supply of curiosity in mankind, and ignites so much hope in such ironically dire situations. I’m waiting to forget this story for a re-read!

One of Andy’s best. Great characters, good pacing, loved it
Read on paperback. Ten out of ten book
So… so good.. Like really good. Really.
Another movie worthy book. I’ve only read this and the Martian and I couldn’t set either one down. You also get the bonus of learning a ton of science and physics while enjoying it! Awesome book!
Interesting concept but somewhat annoying execution. Weir’s “The Martian” was a tour de force that his followup novels “Artemis” and now “Hail Mary” don’t match. Both have interesting concepts but the writing is often flat, with puerile asides, a shallow narrator, and distractingly pedantic explanations that both interrupt the story flow and suspension of disbelief. “The Martian” showed similar proclivities but somehow stayed on the right side of them. “Hail Mary” is better than “Artemis,” and had a stronger narrative and more creative premise. It deserves no awards, but can be a pleasant-enough beachside read.
Hail Mary. I’ve read all three of Andrew’s books. The details of his stories are detailed and make you feel it’s all possible. I’ll be looking for his next book. Maybe Grace and Rocky’s next adventure. Good luck! Tom Manigan
Hail Mary. I love Andy Weir’s stuff. This book, however, was a mishmash of chemistry lessons and Spaceballs. Parts were very good but it moved too slowly, gave too many detailed chemistry lessons (normally I love those parts but this was definitely overkill), and pushed some space alien envelopes a bit too far. Still it kept me mostly entertained.
This book got me back into reading. I *LOVE* this book. I started with the audiobook and bought the ebook because I thought a chunk of the audiobook had been cut out (you’ll understand why if you listen to it). Now I’ve listened all the way through twice, bought the hardcover and read it through as well. I was not a reader in school or as a young adult. I tried a few different Stephen King books my wife had but could never finish them. I was scrolling through Reddit late one night and came across a thread with book recommendations. For some reason this one I noted down and downloaded the audiobook a few days later. I’m so glad I did. The idea behind the story is so interesting to me, and the author did an AMAZE job bringing it to life. I liked this so much I sought out, bought, and read the author’s other two books. Thank you Andy Weir for writing such an awesome book.
Must read. I don’t usually read science fiction, but on occasion I bounce into it. This was a phenomenal book. I LOvED the character development of Grace as well as the whole story.
Engaging. I never thought a interaction in space with an intelligent being would ever hold my attention. I was wrong, this is a fantastic read that I highly recommend. The science included pushes the story along and I happily chased it through several twists I didn’t see coming. Very well written.
Murphy's Law Rules. This book reminded me of "The Martian" and then I got to the end and realized it's the same author. The entire story really is all about Murphy's Law and how it snarls everything up. The characters are really done well and the problems and solutions are about as hard core as anything in Hard SF.
Best yet. This is my favorite Weir book yet.
An Action Movie with science. Just like in the Martian, the author makes science a key character. He taps into alien encounters and world ending from the angle of science, and it's a compelling and rewarding read. I couldn't put it down.
Great!. Excellent book! I enjoyed reading it.
Great characters!. I loved his description of the alien race he encounters!
Loved it!!!. One of the best books I’ve ever read. And I have read plenty. Thank you, Andy!!!
Hail Mary. Perfect book! Totally absorbing and entertaining. Loved everything about it!!
My New Favorite. I liked The Martian by Andy Weir, a lot. I like Hail Mary just a little bit more.
incredible. incredible
Project Hail Mary. Great story and Rocky was IT for me.
Incredible. Love this book!!!
Didn’t take light years to read!. Engrossing science fiction novel that had me from the first page. I devoured this book like I did the too meager rations we received in Army Ranger Training. Surprises lurked around every corner. Loved the meet up with an alien life form unlike any other imagined. Make sure you have a few days free before you start this thriller.
Loved it!. Just like The Martian and Artemis, I have to re-read this great book!
It was all mostly understandable. I really liked the relationship between Ryland and his unexpected ally. Very interesting and emotional story of planetary salvation.
Stunning. Haven’t read a newer book that is this good in a long long time.
Project Hail Mary scores big!. Great read!!!
More please!. Weir has an amazing imagination and ability to turn that imagination into a gripping plot, with lovable characters and humor. As an added bonus the book reminds us that the universe is fascinating.
Awesome. This book is awesome as every book Andy Weir has written. Do not think about it , get ready to enjoy another Space adventure!
Good Sci-fi. Good entry-level science fiction. Easy to read and follow. The twists are (for the most part) not telegraphed and remain surprises. Spoilers!!! The story lacks a certain “grounding”, unfortunately. Let’s start with the premise. The sun is dimming significantly. Humanity has unlimited energy and all of humanity’s cooperation. Why build an interstellar space ship? Why not just build a reflector array or some other “local” device? Because you won’t be able to meet aliens that way! Don’t get me wrong; I love a good alien story. But it all seemed a little *too* likely. The author attempts to address this with a hand wave (as he does for much of the plot) but it leaves a mealy, unsatisfactory, taste. I appreciated the character building and plot development… for the most part. Sadly, the most interesting plot device (Grace’s memory loss and his subsequent memory redemption) starts great but develops into a generic b-plot. Grace regains his memory linearly and the two stories run parallel in time. This is not how amnesia works and half way through the novel the guise of “remembering” is dropped entirely. The is the most disappointing aspect of the novel. The author missed a huge opportunity for creative storytelling. Rocky and Grace’s characters, however, are well fleshed and convincing. Rocky is a little too anthropomorphic with a full range of emotions and motivation but being the only other character with whom Grace can interact, I suppose it’s understandable. Still, another missed opportunity. Other characters, like Stratt, are obvious plot drivers who give off very tangible “told, not shown” or “plot armor” vibes. This is just lazy writing. Now the sci-fi aspect. Great as expected. The real science and “fake” science blend fairly seamlessly. Of course it’s obvious when the author expects you to just believe something but it’s not so ham-fisted as to cause one’s eyes to roll. For me, good science fiction makes it hard to distinguish between reality and fantasy. This novel does a decent job and I found myself googling here and there to see if the author was making something up or not. Regardless, the suspense is there. The urgency is there. The thrill and chill are all there. But the story is just average. Grace is swept up, unwilling, into a huge project to save humanity, the responsibility of which rests squarely on his shoulders alone. He learns he’s not a coward; he discovers just how brave and heroic he can be. He saves humanity and the Eridians too. And, presumably, dies doing what he loved most: teaching. You wanted warm and fuzzy, right? 3/5 elbows too pointy
New favorite book. A fascinating take on the relationship between language and science. And friendship! Amaze amaze amaze
wow. i love this story so much 😭 rocky and grace’s friendship is the reason i live in breathe those are LIFE GOALS PEOPLE the plot is just 😙🤌 and im a sucker for sciency space stories so this was just BEAUTIFUL recommend this and The Martian to everyone these are masterpieces
Couldn’t put it down. Very cool plot and characters. A huge bunch of physics, biology, math that I sadly just skipped over but otherwise excellent sci-fi
Enjoyed it!. A happy sci-fi with all the relevant math, science and made up bits. A total fist-bump.
Very entertaining. Fun nerdy read
Incredible book. This book was absolutely incredible. I couldn’t put it down. The way he focuses on friendship in strange places and the relationship between the two main characters is remarkably well done. Just a joy to read.
Best book I’ve read in years!. I laughed, I cried ,and I enjoyed every minute of this INCREDIBLE story! It was PERFECT from beginning to END! Please add it to your library before it’s too late! It’s definitely a Sci Fi CLASSIC!
Amazing. This immediately became my favorite book. And the voice actors performance and voices is absolutely amazing. I can’t wait to listen to this again and again
Hail Mary. There is a great story there if you can wade through the technical details. We techno nerds should find it fascinating from beginning to the very last bit of Astronage.
Creative and satisfying. This is a good story. It doesn’t ‘create’ a bunch of far fetched technologies which makes you feel like it could happen.
Wow wow wow. Amaze! I was hooked from the first chapter. Could not put it down. Sure, a lot of the science stuff (and definitely the math) was over my head, but it didn't stop me from loving this story.
Truly entertaining, funny, touching, stimulating book. If you love science and have a heart, read this book
Hail Mary. I was pleasantly surprised by the concurrent stories being told. This was as good as The Martian and would probably make a great movie.
Fist bump worthy. Peak storytelling and had me on the edge of my seat!
The best science fiction since Clifford Simak and the Strugatski brothers. In the world of science fiction, there is one thing that authors don’t do. Well, almost never do. Create an alien world. There is good reason for that. It’s darn difficult! Many writers end up with some sort of human like race, but, say, green - just to be different. Only the true ones go head first into that. Create an alien world, different from ours, that still makes scientific sense, and looks, well, real! Andy Weir is one them and one of the best too! Amazing!
Outstanding!!!. Had me on the edge. Couldn’t put it down.
❤️ rocky. This book was the best book. It took me to adventures and places I’ve only dreamed of and this book had every engineer/ nerd dream with all the perfect jargon. If you need a space buddy to get lost with in this unpredictable time rocky is your man.
What a ride!. Great read. Fast paced, intelligent and exciting. You won’t be disappointed.
