Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey Book Summary

From the Academy Award®–winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction
“Unflinchingly honest and remarkably candid, Matthew McConaughey’s book invites us to grapple with the lessons of his life as he did—and to see that the point was never to win, but to understand.”—Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck

I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.
Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges—how to get relative with the inevitable—you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights.”
So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops.
Hopefully, it’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears.
It’s a love letter. To life.
It’s also a guide to catching more greenlights—and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too.
Good luck.

Amazing stories and great inspirations.

- Wonderful journey3 star

This book was fun and engaging. I really enjoyed learning more about how a well-known actor approaches life experiences —all good and also bad—with positivity. It is not often a writer selflessly also engages a reader to change perspective and open the road to life. Thanks for sharing the Green light journey.

- Touching my heart5 star

Mathew has written from His heart and shown realities of his life, his challenges and successes. I hope that teens will take the time to read his story and understand their own realities

- Excellent Read!5 star

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Personal memoirs are always interesting reads due to finding internal peace/balance in life, especially through trauma and/or tough times. I particularly enjoyed Matthew’s ability to read the situations he was in and then respond accordingly. Would highly recommend.

- Great book, better lessons5 star

I didn't know what to expect when i began reading this book but by the time i finished it, i felt like a better man. One that can continue livin' and improve himself every day to achieve his dreams. Mr. McConaughey did a great job writing a book with great stories and better lessons. The poems, pictures, and personal notes made it even better. It was a heartfelt read that i spent hours at a time in my room, taking it all in for what i believe it was meant to be; a wake up call to live a better life. To achieve the ultimate goal of livin'. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to be more introspective and honest with themselves and the world around them. - Devon Hunter

I’m not sure a review from the likes of someone like me would mean anything. At a time when I was quieted by the louder voices in life, trying to find myself, this book found me. A snippet. A sample that hooked me. I bought the book and couldn’t put it down. It was as if every thought I ever had was eloquently put into words and sentences better than I could ever assemble. Matthew’s experiences and drive spoke to me. I felt like I was right next to him throughout each part. This book, this biography is a glimpse into the life of an honest, hardworking, moral driven man/father/husband. A good measure to anyone’s character and substance. I truly hope that in another 20-30 years there is a second book. I’d like to see how everything turns out.

- Just a great feel good read!5 star

I have loved everything about McConaughey since Dazed and Confused came out my Junior year of high school. A Texas man myself, it’s just awesome to read and envision his life in places I know so well! You can’t help but feel proud of him. It’s hard to put the book down once you start reading. You’ll wanna see what comes next. Some things just seem unreal but hey, everything is bigger in Texas! Oh and good luck not imagining his distinctive Texas accent while reading! I might purchase the audio book just to get the whole experience.
