“[A] mesmerizing debut novel.”
The New York Times Book Review

“A story that kept me tied to the page, told in masterful, seamless prose.”

“I love this book so much I turned the pages so fast . . . It’s all about the search for independence and being true to yourself and who you really are.”
—Reese Witherspoon

Afi Tekple is a young seamstress in Ghana. She is smart; she is pretty; and she has been convinced by her mother to marry a man she does not know. Afi knows who he is, of course—Elikem is a wealthy businessman whose mother has chosen Afi in the hopes that she will distract him from his relationship with a woman his family claims is inappropriate. But Afi is not prepared for the shift her life takes when she is moved from her small hometown of Ho to live in Accra, Ghana’s gleaming capital, a place of wealth and sophistication where she has days of nothing to do but cook meals for a man who may or may not show up to eat them. She has agreed to this marriage in order to give her mother the financial security she desperately needs, and so she must see it through. Or maybe not?

His Only Wife is a witty, smart, and moving debut novel about a brave young woman traversing the minefield of modern life with its taboos and injustices, living in a world of men who want their wives to be beautiful, to be good cooks and mothers, to be women who respect their husbands and grant them forbearance. And in Afi, Peace Medie has created a delightfully spunky and relatable heroine who just may break all the rules.

- Beautiful from beginning to end5 star

This was an amazing read! Realistic fiction that really pushed the envelope around tradition in the modern world. I loved it!

- Excellent Book5 star

His only wife is funny, refreshing, relatable( realistic )and a quick read; however, it does feel like it should be the first book in a series on Afi’s journey - her story feels incomplete and there are areas in the book that feel under developed. Overall great book and i’m hoping for more in this series.

- 100%5 star

Great book!

- juicy story, wish there were more moments that made me drop my jaw3 star

The plot is messy, wild and just plain juicy but the book is underwhelming. I wish it wasn’t so elementary, but definitely 3 stars for a debut.

- 💔4 star

I loved reading this book, but the ending felt like it was half finished. I felt like I was left with a half finished ending.

- Beautifully Told Story of a Strong Woman5 star

Loved the novel. The story takes you right to Ghana. I loved the cultural references. I could feel, taste, and see Ghana. Can’t wait to visit this beautiful country!!! Afi is a remarkable, strong woman who I can relate to all the way to fashion design. Her story is compelling.

I read this book in one night. It’s that good. So glad I read this and so mad I didn’t read it sooner! What a story.

- Heartbreaking, but powerful5 star

Very well written, characters were portrayed beautifully, loved seeing Afi find her confidence and independence in the midst of turmoil

- Enjoyable Reading .5 star

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The Author really brought the characters to life.

- Escapism in Ghana5 star

Loved this book, read essentially in one sitting

- His Only Wife1 star

This is a riveting story about the complexity of culture and family influences on expected behavior of men and women in some Ghanaian contexts. My heart goes out to the protagonist, Afi ,who is caught in the middle of one family’s attempt to meddle with human emotions. Afi emerges as a strong willed independent woman who holds her head up high and demands that she be respected in the relationship . I look forward to reading more books by this author .
