Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith
Troubled Blood by Robert Galbraith Book Summary
In the epic fifth installment in this “compulsively readable” (People) series, Galbraith’s “irresistible hero and heroine” (USA Today) take on the decades-old cold case of a missing doctor, one which may be their grisliest yet.
Private Detective Cormoran Strike is visiting his family in Cornwall when he is approached by a woman asking for help finding her mother, Margot Bamborough—who went missing in mysterious circumstances in 1974.
Strike has never tackled a cold case before, let alone one forty years old. But despite the slim chance of success, he is intrigued and takes it on; adding to the long list of cases that he and his partner in the agency, Robin Ellacott, are currently working on. And Robin herself is also juggling a messy divorce and unwanted male attention, as well as battling her own feelings about Strike.
As Strike and Robin investigate Margot’s disappearance, they come up against a fiendishly complex case with leads that include tarot cards, a psychopathic serial killer and witnesses who cannot all be trusted. And they learn that even cases decades old can prove to be deadly . . .

Needs a good editing.. Waaaaay to long. Or as snappy as the others in the series.
UGH!. WAY TOO LONG! Ridiculous, meaningless descriptive passages. CHARACTERS: hard to connect to the characters from 40 years in the past, only referred to secondarily in bits and pieces. ROBIN AND STRIKE: a long slog to a relationship. UGH, UGH,UGH.
I do not suggest reading. This book is so long and drawn out and not good.
Just ok. Really long for not much reason. Characters are well developed but this felt forced compared to her other books in the series, which I loved. Not sure, I ended it just feeling “ehh...”.
Ridiculously Long. Interesting read, but far too long.
Boring.. One of the more boring books I’ve come across in a long time. Galbraith (aka Rowlins) meanders all over the narrative, bogging down in long-winded discussions about astrology, overly long excerpts from another “book”, and devices that seem to serve no purpose other than to drag this out to a torturously long degree.
Great Plot…. That keeps you guessing. But , boy it’s long.
A rich and rewarding read. Again the writing is superb. The reader not only feels the physical and emotional pain of the many characters but can see them as the flourish on the page.
One of my favorites in the Strike series. It’s funny to read the varying comments about this book. One person mentioned to skip this book which astonishes me...with that said, I can understand how some people may think the writing is slow and drawn out, BUT that to me is one of the aspects I loveeee most about RG’s writing style. Over the series of Strike books, RG has masterfully developed the characters, their relationship(s), as well as the locations. RG takes time to set the scene and does not rush through any aspect. I absolutely adored this book! It was long and I love that it was! Shortening this book would have taken away from the storyline. Just with all the previous Strike series, I found it extremely difficult to figure out the ending. I’m so tired of reading these 300-400 page novels that keep coming out from most other authors; you fly through the books, the language is juvenile, and storylines oftentimes too predictable. I’m currently searching for my next read and feel RG ruined other books for me because I love her writing style so very much. I cannot wait for the next Strike book to come out!!! Thank you RG for sharing your amazing talent with the world.
Troubled Blood. Hard to believe this woman can write the Gothic fantasy Harry Potter, then turn around and write a complex, many charactered mystery noir ,with a tender hearted macho hero. Good job Toots!
Insightful. This is the 4th book I’ve read of this series and definitely the best. The characters were developed with great detail and insightful ness. Looking forward to read the next one.
Perfect Mystery. I loved this book. It was wonderfully complex, this one, and the killer was a total shock! Plus I loved that our shock became part of the story. ❤️
Love Strike!. Excellent! This booth like the other Strike novels kept me riveted throughout!
Read... then judge.. There’s nothing transphobic in this book. As always, JKR is simply amazing!
Not great. This is by far my least favorite in the series. Way too cumbersome. I was bored to tears reading the astrology details and eventually glossed over the words. The last 100 pages were the best part of the book, picking up steam
Troubled Blood is excellent but…. There is no doubt that the author is a magnificent writer regardless of the name she is using but I suspect she has become overly enamored of her own talent and needs to prove her inordinate ability to conjure visual impact with words in almost every sentence. Strike and Robin apparently never enter a physical space without her irrepressible need to describe EVERY animate or inanimate detail as well as the emotional and sensorial impact on their human existence. Bring it down a notch. Just a tad. But the story, plot and subplots are enthralling and create an obsession to read on!
Amazing... as always. This one was a good one. I was following along until the end when JK took you the reader on an amazing turn! Literally could not stop reading !!
Unpredictable. Real page-turner. Best book so far in this series. Huge novel, starts slow. The way several story lines are interwoven builds over time. I finished the second half of this book in two days. Couldn’t put it down!
Strike Strikes Again. LOVE this series of books. The only sad part about them is having to wait for the next one!! Truly enjoy the relationship between Strike and his partner Robin. They mesh together as beautifully as Mulder and Scully, or Sherlock and Watson. Always eager for the next installment.
Great book!. I believe this is the best book JK Rowling has written..so far. Vivid images painted by a wonderful use of language. I look forward to her next endeavor!
Paid by the word?. The tale is solid. However, the infusion of astrology and tarot was over played and got in the way of the tale. Hundreds of pages should have been edited to slim this novel. It’s overweight. Wordiness and mystical meandering smothered the mystery for me. Instead of aiding and abetting quietly in the background, they overwhelmed the horrific human bottom line.
Outstanding once again!. My absolute favorite series and author! Never disappoints. And I did not see the ending coming. When do we get book 6?
Loved it!. Great read! Couldn't out it down... Thanks JK...er...Mr. G!
Troubled Blood. Good story. Too long. Too complicated.
Kept me guessing. There are lots of twists and so many suspects! I normally guess the culprit very early on in most books but this one had me changing my mind till the end.
Not the best of the series. The mystery was actually really good, kept me guessing, and the vast number of characters were unique but I found Strike actually annoying and self indulgent until the last hundred pages or so and likewise spent the same amount of time wishing Robin would grow a backbone. The “sexual tension” between them is old after 4 books and takes up too many pages.
The best so far!. I’ve enjoyed every book in the series but the latest was the best. Hard to put down.
Must re-read.... now that I know the answers. I think I could have spotted all the clues if there weren't so many suspects entwined in Strike's and Robin's search for the truth. The author is an incredible storyteller. One can't help but wonder how she maintains such a strenuous creative pace-- and then I just surrender to its pull. Thanx much!
Best book in an outstanding series. The best novel so far in an overall outstanding series. The complexity of the author’s plots and her ability to play on common assumptions makes for not only an exciting read and great mystery, but also forces you to acknowledge your own biases in everyday life.
Could not put it down. The only con is having to wait for the next book! Cannot wait for the next one
Troubled Blood. Great book!! I really enjoy these characters and the plots
Great skill and incredible organization. JKR is such a terrific writer than it seems preposterous to pose any criticism at all. To be clear, I did thoroughly enjoy the book. However, in my opinion (such as it matters), the book is about 30,000 words too long for the story. But don’t ask me which 30,000!
So long, so slow. Disappointed.. I am a huge fan of this series, but this book is so long and so slow that I honestly dreaded reading it and got through it through force of will alone. My personal opinion is that this book was written like a movie or TV show instead of a book. This book could be an entire season of a TV show, with excess material to go around. It is scattered, rambling, and I found myself reading dozens of pages and then wondering why on earth I had just read them. I have gladly paid for every book in this series. Not all of them have been perfect, but they all have been good. Some have been great. This one is garbage and I think JK Rowling has fully lost her direction. I love JK Rowling and believe she is a literary treasure, so I truly hope this is a fluke an she regains her expertise of her craft again for her next book. If you love the Strike series as I do, I honestly encourage you to just skip this one and hope the next is better!
Troubled blood. Simply terrific. Cannot wait for the next Strike & Robin adventure and obviously they're eventual coming "together". Great read thoroughly held my attention thru out !
Not what you think.... Given the controversy, i was expecting something else. The story is not about transgendered people, or even men who dress as women. Where that came from I do not know. One mention of a man who may or may not wear a feather boa and wore a woman’s coat, are all I could find to suggest anything remotely like that. I think those who are saying that it is against transgendered people have not read the book. Love or hate the author for her personal opinions, this is not a homophobic book. It was good writing, the story was interesting, and mostly about the abuse of women, by misogynistic men. That plays with the authors personal experience. Judge it yourself. Get it from the library if you don’t want to contribute the profit of the author. Personal research should always be done in the face of controversy. This is about serial killers. One wore a woman’s coat to lure his victims. He did not dress as a woman nor was he transgendered. I think the controversy may be doing more harm to the transgendered than good, as it invites people to think falsehoods entirely, and blindly.
Likable cranky guy with nice partner.. Enjoyable.
The Best Yet. No plot spoiler here, just a comment on this being the best book yet in the Comoran Strike series. I throughly enjoyed it.
Brilliant!. The character development, psychological insight, and plot make this one of the very best detective novels ever written.
Well, now I can get on with my life. This one was the best, and they were all good. The characters amazing, the writing superb. I didn’t want it to end, but banished my wife for the last two hours of the reading so I could focus. I hope to see more, but if not, it was a gift well wrapped.
Decent. Decent read, and I was truly surprised by the ending
Excellent book. As with all of the books in this series it kept me guessing until the end. So many exciting twists and turns. I look forward now to the next installment I hope will be coming.
Tedious. I’ve read all of the other Strike stories, and enjoyed them. This one was just so tedious, with so many characters and red herrings, that it felt like a real slog to get through it.
Strike and Robin Win Again. The detective pair of Strike and Robin are formidable sleuths, their dogged pursuit of truly evil personalities rings true with real police work. As compelling is the complex story lines of the lead characters and their evolving relationship. The author’s skill at fantasy and grim reality is impressive.
Pictures of even simple things come alive!. Her two main characters are people you would want as friends/ and the evil people that commit the crimes that they solve and people you never want to meet up with! Her in-depth descriptions of the faces of characters are so colorful- you see that person in your own mind, amazing the way she tells the stories. Can’t wait until the next book comes out!
Wonderful. Although it is long, J.K. Is able to weave in all the subtleties throughout. I have loved the whole series but this might be my favorite. Definitely worth the time. And, it could be read as a stand alone because she discusses a lot of the past history. Loved it!
Clever storytelling!. Galbraith/Rowling is one of the best writers I have ever read. Whether for children or adults or adult children they write to engage the mind. The C.B. Strike series has been a thoughtfully built narrative about really complex and interesting people, even the bad ones. I have found myself completely drawn in to the stories and the emotions I have felt and the thoughts they have provoked has made for some compelling reflections. Great books, could not put them down!
Great fun. The Robin and Corm suspense train Carries onward.
I love this book,. I’m a romantic at heart, I want Robbin & Strike together
Great Read. Anyone giving this less than 3 stars clearly has not read it, which is a shame because they are missing out on a great mystery novel with some of the best developed characters in the genre. Can’t wait for the next one! PS - the book has absolutely zero transphobic or homophobic agenda, as any actual reader could tell. If you don’t believe me, read the book and then judge for yourself. The ridiculous behavior of these critics reminds me of those who had (and still have) a problem with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn over the frequent use of a certain word. That book was actually the opposite of racist, yet people who never read it pushed (and still push) for it to be banned. The same could be said of this book, but I would rather not go into detail and spoil it. Read it. Form your own opinions. Then try to convince the sheep to the break free of their ignorant shepherds on social media.
Cannot describe with a title. Once again, I’m completely empty and satiated by the latest novel, ‘Troubled Blood.’ As I delved back into the world of Comoran Strike (that I’ve counted down to get my hands on), my wishes, wants and needs for this book were all met and I’m like ok where’s book 6??? Is it ready yet?? This novel had Detective work at its best, with twists and turns that will have you reading until your eyes are bloodshot and closing on you making you dream the story. Loved, loved, loved xx

Bloody brilliant. This series is awesome
Much deception in this one. Some reviewers seem to have confused Rowling’s personal essays on trans topics with this story. There are no trans people in this novel, but Cormoran and Robin do have an LGBT couple for clients in a 40 year old cold case. Oh, and Robin has a gay flat mate. It’s a longish book, but there’s lots of ground to cover and it’s not boring.
Really!. All i can say is wow. I opened this book with trepidation after reading the reviews. But, wow! This is one of the most well written novels I’ve read in a long time. I couldn’t put it down. The twists kept you moving and the switch at the end brought it all to the close.
Satisfying. This book, like all the previous books in the series, is everything I want in a detective novel. Great characters. Interesting plot. Long!!! I look forward to starting the next book in the series

Incredible!!. Once again, masterfully written! She continues to amaze me. I couldn’t put it down and didn’t want it to end. More please!!
Troubled Blood. 4/5 stars Good dialogue. Felt very real. Good character building continues. Hal R
Thoroughly Disappointed. I have really enjoyed the previous Cormoran Strike novels, but this one just felt so forced and really didn’t live up to what I expect from this series. I’m a very quick reader and can usually finish off these books in 1-2 days, especially during quarantine, but it’s been a week and I’ve only just gotten through it. My advice, skip this one and hope the next is better.
Trash. So dissatisfied
Transphobia. This entire novel is based on Rowling’s transphobia. If I could give it zero stars, I would.
Troubled Blood. Just outstanding book!!!! I did not want this book to end!! I love reading about the awesome adventures of Strike and Robin, their beautiful chemistry in love and life, their moral code, and their brilliant detection skills. Thank you to this wonderful writer for another fantastic book!!
Loved it. Couldn’t put it down. Suspense of who did it kept me up for 3 nights in a row
Excellent, Page Turner. I don’t think it’s honest to rate a book simply because of the personal views of the author. This reviews don’t deserve a line of space. This is my favorite of all the Strike books, hands down. I couldn’t put it down. I thought there was some excellent character development and just when I thought I knew who did it, I was proven wrong. Galbraith has such a way of creating realistic and relatable characters. Many great lessons as well in the story. Excited for the next one!
Wonderful writer. Master of suspense
Nononono. This is just so bad
Excellent, as always!. Always impressed by her writing and this latest addition to the series is wonderful! It’s hard to put down, the characters are human and compelling, and you just want more. Enjoy!!👏🏼👏🏼❤️❤️❤️
Excellent book!!. I had a hard time putting it down and didn’t want it to end either. Now, I have another long wait for the next book. Love the characters and it makes me feel like I’m right there with them.
Garbage. Utter garbage.
Incredible. Dialogues are amazing and the plot really sticks with you. I couldn’t put it down. Great job!!
Best Strike book yet!. I spent my childhood devouring HP books as they came out, one by one, and waiting years in between for the next. The same anxiety in waiting and adrenaline for getting a new one accompanies this detective series, and practiced readers of the authors style will undoubtedly draw parallels between the series. Sometimes I hear Dumbledore teaching Harry in the way Strike leads Robin to discoveries. The real storyline is the relationships between Strike, Robin and their friends and family. Each books twisting puzzle of murder mystery is just a side plot, though one that keeps you reading late into the night past your bedtime. No spoilers, but this one is just my favorite yet! I can never wait for more but I have no other choice!
Troubled Blood. Great book, great characters, great plot! Loved it
Excellent again. This is another fantastic example of Rowling’s unparalleled imagination and writing skill, with sufficient realism and detail to solve the mystery if you really are a good sleuth, but don’t expect Rowling to make it easy for you. The characters are also sufficiently realistic and consistent, that you care about solving their mystery. Don’t pay any attention to the politically motivated reviews by intolerant people who labor under the misconception that tolerance means that you not only allow those with other beliefs to live in peace, but that you are required to agree with their views, and cannot express your own. There is a lot of that going around right now.
Troubled Blood. This is definitely the author’s best work yet. Complex, didn’t see it coming resolution. The red herrings were well planted. Aunt Joan’s dying wish left me in tears, a beautiful request. Wow!!!
Great read!. Suspenseful and well-written.
