A "captivating and bittersweet" novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Summer of '69: Their secret love affair has lasted for decades—but this could be the summer that changes everything (People).
When Mallory Blessing's son, Link, receives deathbed instructions from his mother to call a number on a slip of paper in her desk drawer, he's not sure what to expect. But he certainly does not expect Jake McCloud to answer. It's the late spring of 2020 and Jake's wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election.
There must be a mistake, Link thinks. How do Mallory and Jake know each other?
Flash back to the sweet summer of 1993: Mallory has just inherited a beachfront cottage on Nantucket from her aunt, and she agrees to host her brother's bachelor party. Cooper's friend from college, Jake McCloud, attends, and Jake and Mallory form a bond that will persevere—through marriage, children, and Ursula's stratospheric political rise—until Mallory learns she's dying.
Based on the classic film Same Time Next Year (which Mallory and Jake watch every summer), 28 Summers explores the agony and romance of a one-weekend-per-year affair and the dramatic ways this relationship complicates and enriches their lives, and the lives of the people they love.

Bad
This book made me want to be in Nantucket the whole time. I could practically smell the ocean while reading this book. I could hardly put the book down, I was so intrigued by Mal and her life. While I wished to see her end up with Jake, sometimes the endings we least expect make the best endings. A wonderful book with great detail and beautiful writing.
I loved reading l the paradise series by Elin. So I thought this was the next perfect book. There was not enough in the story of Jake and Mallory. I guess I wanted/needed more. Very predictable book.
Beautiful. Long term devotion & a heartbreaking ending. Modeled after the play Same Time, Next Year.
Such a moving, enjoyable, funny, sad story. Loved all the characters and was not able to put the book down. I can not wait for Nantucket’s next installment. Elin’s writing is magical.
Couldn’t put it down! My emotions were all over the place
Not a very good storyline. What made it worse is she felt the need to get political towards the end of the story. I do not purchase these books to read about your political views.
If I could have made this love story and book last a lifetime I would have! The best book I have EVER read!
Love this one!
A beautiful love story, I can't stop thinking about it
I couldn’t stop reading this book, it was an amazing escape! The ending made me feel love but also breaks my heart. Thank you for writing this.
Like a warm summer breeze this book will put you in the right mood from page one. Do yourself a favor and read it!
28 Summers blew me away. I couldn’t put it down. A must read .
Full disclosure: I love the movie Same Time Next Year, so I might have been predisposed to love this book. I appreciated how the author integrated the parallels to the classic movie into her work to a degree. I also liked how she provided some pop-cultural context each year. Though admittedly, some characters are richer than others, the author gets you vested in their lives. One is reminded that people are complicated, sometimes surprising. Above all else, life takes some interesting and unexpected turns. This is a great beach chair read. But wear sunscreen because it’s hard to put down.
I’m usually a huge fan. Hate the story(years of cheating) and all the parentheses with other people’s thoughts. A woman who won’t stand up for herself and says she’s worth more than a weekend for years is not a good heroine.
EH is one if my favorite authors and this one does not disappoint. Loved the story of Mallory and her life.
Smart! Captivating story - Couldn’t put it down! Great summer read. I’ll look for this author again.
Such a great beach read!
Good story
Cooper is the best brother to have. Fray and Mallory should married and lived happily ever after. Leland was always jealous of Mallory, it just took so long for Mallory to figure it out. Jake wanted it all, he was weak, a successful wife and a once a year fun time, he could have left Ursula before it even started, he and Ursula had parted ways before Jake made the first trip to Nantucket. It’s fast easy to read but predictable.
When a book doesn’t keep me interested, I tend to speed read and skip a lot. In this case, I don’t think I missed anything. The location backdrop was beautiful but the point of the book was boring and sad and worst of all, very predictable. I kept hoping that it would get better, but it didn’t and it ended so abruptly that I was left sort of frustrated. Love her books but not this one.
I found the book depressing. It does keep the reader interested; however, the supporting characters are despicable. Of course one is a politician and a couple of others represent the elite class and, in today’s environment, this is the new normal.
This was not my favorite Hilderbrand book but still worth reading.
How many trite cliches can you fit into each scene.
This is my first Elin Hilderbrand novel. I must admit that I devoured the book and loved it until the very last page. The suspense kept me reading until the very last sentence. I am disappointed in the ending of this story. To me, it felt like Ms. Hilderbrand simply walked away from the entire storyline and didn’t finish it. I have some of her earlier books. I hope the continuity of the storylines aren’t as jumbled and haphazardly written.
Excellent read that quickly draws you in!
Absolutely unreal. Couldn’t put this book down. Finished in a day and a half!
OK, an enjoyable summer read but the premise is incredulous. They love each other deeply but choose to stay apart except for one weekend a year. And they make that decision when they are both single.
I was enjoying this book until Link had his first birthday party and was playing baseball. That was the stupidest thing I ever read. Yeah, a one year old is swinging a bat and hitting a ball. Jesus H. Christ! How in the world could a mistake like that not be caught by proofreaders or editors? Holy crap, it’s a baby.
Horrible. Boring. Unrealistic. They fall in love but then he marries someone else, that he doesn’t even really like? Meanwhile she meets the perfect man but breaks up with him because she’s “in love” with her once a year guy? Plus knowingly committing adultry each year? I kept reading hoping something good would happen. Waste of time and money.
It was a great book. I love hated Jake for having everything he wanted and never committing to fully loving Mal.
An ok beach read, but the left turn bashing Justice Kavanaugh was unnecessary and had little to do with the plot.
Dull, dull, dull after the first few chapters. 28 years of being unhappy and making bad choices... so boring that I had to keep skipping pages. Save your money for a better book.
Every single book is a joy, this one most of all! Thank you for taking me away from 2020, back to the beach with these wonderful characters. It was nostalgic and made me hungry too.
I usually like the authors books but this one was so disappointing. Really? This is supposed to be romantic? A woman who saves herself for a married man she sees once a year until her life is over?? This is not a good message to send to women. This is not romantic, it is pitiful. What a waste.
I feel like I’m at a loss for words. Elin was right, this is her best book yet! I absolutely loved 28 Summers, and never wanted it to end. Such an amazing story from an even better story teller. Elin Hilderbrand you truly are the best!
I really enjoyed this book.
I’m just going to have to stop reading Elin Hilderbrand books. Her early works I really enjoyed- but lately and especially this one. Just a way to get her politics on record. Cavendish, really? The whole story was almost unbearable. Jake and Mallory - unlikable and no chemistry - I didn’t believe their love story - Ursula - unlikable - I paid for it though so I finished it, skimming. And was glad when it was done.
I have yet to read an Elin Hilderbrand book I haven’t loved - this one was another home run. I laughed, cried, and so enjoyed her richly developed characters (and mouth-watering way of describing meals)! Also loved the little references to her other books throughout the novel.
This summer read is quite awful, I am sad to report. To preface, My favorite fiction book for a fun read is Silver Girl. Silver Girl rolls out one complex fully flushed character after another. The plot unravels slowly and thoughfully, allowing the readers imagination and intellect to mine the well crafted sentences for meaning that moves the plot along. The words are all important to the story. Hilderbrands Paradise books, Summer of 69 and now this are alarmingly disappointing. You can litereally skip entire chapters and not miss a thing. This current book is an excuse to spew 28 years worth of Hilderbrands politics out of the mouths of superficial characters through endless meaningless chapters. I was suckered in again by a well crafted couple of chapters in the sample read and once roped in, reluctanly hit purchase to find a sudden ‘bate and swith’ of a Spoon fed Danielle Steel-esque lazily written disappointment.
